[Q] external sd media issue - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had some pictures on my external sd that I didn't want showing up in the gallery, so I created a "temp" folder with a .nomedia file in it, and moved those pictures into it. The gallery was working as expected, with just those pictures absent. I removed the sd card to plug into my laptop to transfer those pictures. After inserting the sd card back into the phone, my pictures don't show up in the gallery, and my music doesn't show up in the stock music player. But all the files are there when I look in es explorer. After thinking the .nomedia file was the problem, I deleted the "temp" folder previously created that had that file in it, but I still have the problem. I restarted the phone, but to no avail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Try going to Settings > Applications > all applications > media storage and clearing data. Reboot and see if that solves the issue.

That actually made it WORSE (don't worry, I'm not blaming you). In any file manager (even stock), I can see that all my pictures exist where they've always been. Even the pictures from the camera. However, the gallery is COMPLETELY EMPTY. I can take new pictures, and they'll show up in the gallery. So everything before today (December 12, 2014) simply won't show up in the gallery. Wtf?

Restarting media worked for me with my image downloads to internal storage. IT WAS PISSING ME OFF. Works for now, pics that weren't showing in the gallery now do. Downloaded a few images and all have been showing. Considering the S5 was the first Samsung phone I've had since the Transform I was doing a bit of SMH when it came to this issue. Good phone so far besides that issue.

DCIM folder causing freeze

Hi, I just wanted to let you guys know what I discovered today. Prior to having the HD2, I had a Vibrant, which had HD video capibility. I copied the DCIM folder back to the HD2 from the vibrant, which had some video files in it. It caused major problems. Freezes so bad that the phone was unusable. I am assuming that it is the HD video files, but I haven't copied the pictures back yet. I will follow up if I find that it was something else.
Without those files, Android seems to be running perfect on the 16GB class 2 card...can't wait till my class 10 card gets here tomorrow!!!!

It could be one specific picture or video that is causing the problem with your dcim folder.
possibly, but I removed the 6 HD videos, and copied all the pictures back to the SD, and everything seems to function fine now.
This has happened to me even on WM. All it takes is one corrupted file to bring your DCIM folder to a crawl. If it all of a sudden becomes sluggish, I always just delete the last few additions one by one till it speeds up.
DCIM files cause USB connection to drop
I'm sorry for the "it's happening to me too" post but.....
I store photos on my Samsung Galaxy Captivate internal SD card. Every time I connect to my PC via the USB cable browsing to the DCIM folder causes windows explorer to crash and the USB connection to disappear with the "media scanning" function to take place. Interestingly, the same thing happens if I store photos on the external SD card as well. So far I have tried:
formatting the internal and external SD cards
resetting the phone to factory settings
The problem remains, making the device unusable for transferring photos to a PC.
When it is connected in USB mode for othe rpurposes, there is no problem whatsoever in using windows explorer to browse to and open files in any folder (internal or external SD card) apart from the DCIM folder. After formatting, the DCIM folder can be opened (though it is of course empty) but taking a single photo results in JPG file in the folder that will then cause explorer to crash when trying to open or copy it.
I have Googled around but have not found a solution. I must emphasize, it only occurs with files in the DCIM folder. Any ideas would be much appreciated, thanks.

Downloaded SDRescan.. deleted all videos and messed up gallery app :(

So like i said in the title, i used the app SDRescan to force my phone to rescan media because i found that the gallery app was not automatically refreshing when i added new media to the phone.
I ran the app and a couple minutes later it finishes. Turns out it deleted ALL the phones videos (luckily no pictures). But the problem im having now is that the gallery app is not detecting any media on my phone. There are still pictures, and i readded a lot of my videos back, but the app is showing no media on the phone
I force closed the app, cleared it's data etc. I even formated my sd and put the files back on. Still it shows i have no media.
I thought about taking a new picture with the camera to see what would happen then, and guess what, now it shows i have 1 picture in the gallery. Is there a way i can get the gallery to see the other 1000 pictures i have taken? And all my videos?
edit: i downloaded the stock android gallery app but its the same in that app too. So it's not just HTC's app. Somehow android isnt recognizing my old media.
anybody? this is really killing me.
edit: did a factory reset and the problem persists What's have i done!
hmmmm this is an interesting one. ive had this before but i couldnt remember how i fixed it ...
what ROM are you using, or are you stock ?
SDRescan did nothing to your phone. Your are having problems with the stock Android Media Scanner in your phone. SDRescan does nothing else but notifies the Media Scanner to do it's job on demand, instead of on-boot or SD card mount. That's all it does.
So in short you are having problems with Android Media Scanner, try to look around in this area. I seen few reports on internet when media scanner deleted some files.

I figured the problem lies with the media scanner so I went into Settings > Manage Applications > Media Storage > clear data... but nothing changes.

Isn't this your problem ?
I did have a .nomedia folder on my phone with some videos in and those were deleted. But also the videos in my DCIM folder were deleted. However im over that, my problem is that media scanner isnt picking any media.
I thought i would try another microsd card i had in my sister's mp3 player, and believe it or not android picked up the media. So somehow i think this SDRescan app damaged my sc card..
No, it didn't. Media Scanner has separate databases for each and every SD card. So it's the database for your old SD card which doesn't work, when you put in a new card a new indexing database was created for the ID of your new SD card.
This has happened to me a few times, all i do is find the file using "ES File Explorer" then select to open it with the default video player and it gets added to my library of videos
It's easy to do for a couple of vids, but not really practical if you've got like 10+

i see. but this index, is it not stored on the phone memory? because a factory reset still hasn't solved the problem. I also formatted the sd card, so shouldn't the phone recognize it as a new memory card then?

I tried that wil ES File explorer, and other explorers i have and it doesnt work for me.
It should. You don't have by any chance .nomedia file in root folder of the SD card, right ?

I do. I'll try delete it and see if that helps
Edit: nope
You deleted it and what did you do next ? Did you started SDRescan or rebooted your phone ? Until the Media Scanner kicks in, there won't be any change.
The point is :
1) if you had a folder with data and then added the .nomedia file to it, then unfortunately thanks to the inner workings of the media scanner the file gets deleted instead of only removing the reference from database
2) the card will get indexed again only at boot, SD card insertion or when you execute apps like SDRescan which start the Media scanner manually.
yes! it works now!! thanks for all your help faugusztin!!
after i deleted the the .nomedia folder i did a restart and the problem persisted, but now (like two hours later) i just thought i would go and check the gallery app again and low and behold all my media appeared. Maybe the media scanner didnt finish or something idk. But im happy now
But i was under the impression that the .nomedia trick only blocks media from within that folder? Why was it blocking all my media?
Anyway thanks for all your help mate. really appreciated.
It does index, but it takes time.
It block media from that folder - and all subfolders. It is a sign which says "nothing to see there" - that includes the subfolders of that folder too. Since you had the file in root folder of the card, it didn't indexed anything.
I was too late...glad you got it sorted supreme.

[Q] all my pictures are gone!

Hey guys,
Woke up this morning and all my camera taken pics are gone! They gallery opens up and there are folders listed with downloaded and sample photos, but no camera photos. Not even the "camera" folder was there. I just took a picture now and it created the camera folder and there is only the one picture in there that I just took. I had like 350-400 pics on there and poof they are gone.
Any ideas?
Anybody know the path on the SD card of where the pics are stored?
Thanks.
/sdcard/DCIM/Camera is where my pics are stored anyways.
I remember in my days with my Moment my gallery used to not always load the images. I would delete the directory /sdcard/Android/data/com.cooliris.media and then it would force the gallery to search the sdcard again to index all the pics. No idea if that's the approved process or if it works on the Epic (mainly cause I haven't had the issue), but it used to do the trick.
Search the market for Rescan Media. Useful tool to force a rescan for the gallery.
Un-mount and remount sd card should be ok
Sent from my SPH-D700
I can navigate the sd card anf the DCIM folder is ther, but empty. I unmounted and restarted the phone with a battery pull too, nothing. Ill try rescan media later. I just found out my lookout mobile app was also not set to back up pics

[Q] New Media files not showing up in Gallery or Music Player.

Just found out this particular problem a few days back. When I add new pictures or music to my tablet either in the tablet or the external SD card, it is not showing up in the gallery or the music player. The files however are there when i use a file explorer to view them. The images can be opened with the gallery or any other image app. Music files can be browsed using a file explorer and played with the stock music player or any other music player app. But it just doesn't show up in the gallery or Music player list.
I've tried refreshing the music library, have formatted my SD card but to no avail. Someone suggested to delete the .no media extension from the music player file, but that didn't helped too.
Any suggestions to this problem?
I had the same problem. You can try to delete the cache in settings/apps this should help.
However I found out the stock gallery sometimes takes VERY long to update pics on sd card. By very I am talking about probably hours.
Other gallery apps like "QuickPic" don't have that problem. You can try if quickpic works while stock gallery does not, then it is caused by the mentioned problem.

I tried deleting the cache, but it didn't work. So I flashed my device with the original stock rom. Only then was I able to get back everything. Thanks a lot for suggesting quickpix though. It's a wonderful app.
Try media fix from the market
I use fastreboot program, so that the gallery will refresh, OR you can try, go to settings>applications>manage applications>all then search for the gallery then tap on FORCE Stop, then try to open the gallery again, this should initiate the media scan. if all else fails, use quickpic app for pictures
If you have any trouble with media not showing up, clear the Media Storage data. Settings -> Applications -> All -> Media Storage -> Clear Data. It'll rescan everything properly after that.
Check for any hidden files called NOMEDIA
if put in a folder (no extension) the folder will not be indexed.
Useful if you dont want all the icons of an app indexed.

Cannot see my media in Gallery

Hi everyone. Recently I saw my battery drains due to IndexService, and when I check internet one of the suggestion was to put .nomedia file to folders where there is no media file inside, so the battery usage of service will be reduced. When I try to do it made a mistake. When I copy .nomedia file accidentally I paste it to internal storage. Directly after that I deleted it. But now in my gallery all the photos in internal storage is not there anymore. From explorer applications I can see that all photos are still okay. But cannot find what is the reason for not getting my photos in gallery. BTW, not only gallery all other apps, photo editors or social media apps cannot access to the photos as well, but only file managers. Any tip will be appreciated. Thanks
Strange, my only suggestion would be to add another photo to the folder and reboot.
Hopefully that will force an update.
Thanks for your time and help
What you suggest partly worked. Means new photo I put into the folder was seen in the gallery but not the old ones.
