[Q] Terrible Battery in Germany - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all. This is my first actual help post cause I now have a problem, but I have been lurking for a while.
Anyway, I have a rooted S5 from verizon that had awesome battery life compared to my old nexus - I could hit 2 days with one charge. Anyway, I am now living in Germany, will be here for the next year, and I can get maybe half a day before I hit 30%. It feels like I am back with the nexus, I have to plan my charging around what I will be doing.
My carrier here is Lebara. Under the battery stats Android system and Androud OS dominate usage. I had that under control in the States with some TB tweaking, but it is back with a vengance. I haven't updated the OS and am not planning to until L comes out and is compatible with root.
I am never far from an outlet, but I don't want to return to my old habits of always plugging in.
I just had a thought - is it possible that the different electricity standards here nuked my battery? If this is the case, should I worry about my tablet too?

I am also starting to notice a lot more lag and even freezing from normal usage.

S5 frezzing and low batery life.
same here . in the states running stock os flashed to PP

[Q] xpost from Verizon s5 - Bad battery in Germany

Hello all. I posted about a week ago in the Verizon s5 section with regards to bad battery life while living in Germany. I have gotten exactly 0 feedback over there, so I figured I would post my question here.
Admins - I am just copying and pasting. Unless you think it would be better to just move the post?

Samsung s7 Edge not compatible with os 6.0.1?

Hello guys!.It's my first time here. So, I have some questions regarding this problem
I bought my S7E around july, and it had amazing battery life, It lasted around 30hours++ but I drained the battery by playing games so I can charge my phone before 5pm(my office hours) to avoid over charging when I go to bed. I even used the best perfomance that time, gps on, gestures on, etc.But still at least it lasted for 27hours.Now, it only lasts for about 12 hours something. Ive never overcharged it. The moment I saw the green led, i plugged off the charger.
Can anyone fix this? well please don't tell me to turn off all the features, I had them on and still I got to use 27hours. I dont know when I did the update, maybe os 6.0.1 is draining the battery?or any suggestion?
Thank you
Go to Settings>Battery and view the usage to see what app is using it much battery.
You can NOT overcharge the battery of your S7 Edge. I've always kept my phones on the charger over night and never had problems. I'm doing that since the HTC Magic (T-Mobile G1). It has overcharge protection. It is NOT good to drain a Lithium-Ion battery down to a few %. A Lithium-Ion battery operates the best when charged >40% and at average room temperature. Nope. I never drain my battery.I keep my battery until 20% then charge it directly. I know how to take care of Lion battery. Ive heard about the overcharging protection feature but i'm not sure whether it works.we never know whether that program runs on background or not since we cant track it.

Well, then don't charge overnight. You're problem is most likely software related anyway unless your battery is very old and/or you overstressed the battery too often which can't be because the S7 Edge isn't that old and you "...know how to take care of Lion battery". I think you meant Li-Ion but w/e. A defective battery is possible but very unlikely. BTW overcharge protection is not a program. It's a physical thing soldered onto the battery/charger PCB. Hardware. There's one built into the battery and one inside the charger and of course we can track it. You can't because you probably don't have the equipment + knowledge to test it. If you're so concerned, you should really read about it. After all, you're dealing with a highly reactive metal.

Well that's why i charge my phone at my office:crying:
i wonder if the OS is the problem. I've heard about drivers not compatible on s7 using 6.0.1 so the background data keeps working such as gear vr service. It wasnt there before. and OM Customize. So, if i overstressed my battery, it will damage my battery? I did that before to charge my phone between morning to evening.

You're hearing really weird things buddy The S7 Edge has always been running Android 6.x.x. It never ran any other Android version. The drivers are fully compatible. In fact, the drivers on a Samsung are as compatible as drivers can get, since SoC, Camera Sensor and many other parts of the phone are coming from the same manufacturer; Samsung.
My guess, and I can only guess since we'd have to see your battery stats for more detailed explanations, is that you either ran into the Android System-, or Google Play Services battery drain bug that occurs after an OTA update. These problems date back all the way back to the Galaxy S2.
I'd recommend you first flash a stock ROM using the "HOME_CSC" file. This will NOT wipe anything from your phone. Only the core system and stuff will be reinstalled. If you still have this problem, try flashing a stock firmware using the regular "CSC" file. Always make a backup first. The regular CSC file will WIPE EVERYTHING from your phone, including internal storage but it won't touch you MicroSD. Now you start with a freshly installed Android and see if it solved your problem.

Hello mate,I am sorry for my late reply since I gave up. I am trying to solve this again.
Well, can you tell me where can i get the stock firmware? I am from Indonesia(well I think some parts of the continents have different firmware).I wanted to flash it tho but I am afraid I got some "hacked" firmware.
well, the battery usage looks normal to me.
google play services around 5-15%
android OS 15-20%
android system 15-20%
but still,it drains too much>,<
Let me try to upload a pict of it.
Additional information : Slept 8 hours while listening to music and it drained from 55% to 2%.I mean this is really insane. That's why I am taking serious action now. The first time I bought it with the same settings and apps + I turned on always on display and night clock while listening to the music for 8 hours of sleeping,it only drains 10-20%.
I took this ss because I got 30hours on time : link
these are the drained ones.15Nov and 9 Dec
15Nov
9Dec
Thank you mate
First out of all. How much SOT (Screen On Time) do You get?
To check that go to battery usage at the end of the day or when You have 20% and in battery usage tap on screen and take a screenshot.
Second.
Certain firmware updates decrease battery life a little.
And third.
You can disable apps that are draining Your battery if You don't need them.
Also for a really good battery info what uses Your battery etc You can download GSAM battery monitor from play store.

well from the time being, i think my network operator is draining my battery.I tried to turn off my mobile network last night and used wifi instead.I lost 1% for 8 hours.Well, I changed my network operator around october and since then I felt the battery drain. I already sent report to the provider hope they solve it.
But I wonder, my network operator has good 4g coverage here, why does it drain too much? My old operator had only 3g coverage. Is there any way for me to track down my operator whether they are using too much battery to search network coverage maybe?
Newest firmware always decrease battery life a little

Nougat appreciation and battery replacement experience

I just wanted to share how happy i've been with the Nougat update and share my experience with battery replacement. This phone is 2 years old and man i still think this phone can hang in 2017. It's snappy enough for me. I was getting jealous of my sisters s7e with N running. Now that I have it on my s6 i feel like the phone is brand new. Im a happy camper. Also I wanted to share my experience with changing my battery. I bought a replacement battery of ebay and swapped it when i found out my old one was busting out the back cover (defective) and was dying minutes after fully charging. Just replacing the battery i got more use. SoT is 15 minutes shy of 5 hours compared to my before time of 3 hours. stanby with music and light usage is about 24 hour with 20 percent still left. All i do to try to keep the battery in good condition is never letting it run below 20 percent and using greenify. I don't know if Nougat helped battery life but my phone has felt brand new to me from just replacing battery and updating to N. Let me know your experience with battery and how you are liking Nougat. I just flashed to Nougat on Tmo so i might be late to party ive heard some have been running it for months now.

I ran stock unrooted nought since the ota came out here. I had no issues until I made that mistake of installing substratum for touchwiz roms. It worked fine for a little while until the themed apps got updated breaking them one by one. Since I was forced to wipe it anyway I rooted and installed golden eagle Rom which I'm really happy with so far. A lot of benefits over stock.
So far my battery hasn't had any issues and hopefully it won't for a while. I don't run it low or use quick charge if I can help it. The phone is almost 2 years old.
S6 is very bad Google pxl is the boss
If I could buy a Google pixel for anywhere near as cheap as the s6 I would. Your comment isn't very helpful. I personally find the s6 to be a really decent phone for it's age. Especially since I never liked any Samsung phones before this because I always found them to be cheaply made, laggy and buggy.

Don't feed the trolls. Let the mods handle them. BTT, nougat has been very good in terms of battery in my experience as well.

so do you just uncheck the fast charging option in the settings when you want to charge it and aren't in a hurry? is there study into fast charging causing battery to die out faster? sounds interesting
I haven't heard of any study but typically batteries in general like slow charging better. I leave it unchecked unless I want to charge it faster which happens maybe once a month for me. I charge it in the evening and usually have no problem getting through the day. I usually have a portable power pack with me just in case.

Galaxy Note 4 - battery life

I have had my phone for several years and developed a good sense of the battery's life (meaning what the remaining battery percentage would be after a period of time). For instance, if the phone were fully charged when I went to bed, it would typically read 94% when I awoke.
Starting a few months ago, the battery began running down quite a bit faster than it had previously. The first thing I did was install Greenify, but that made essentially no difference (my phone is rooted, stock ROM, and I had already removed all bloatware, turned off autostarts, etc.)
Next, given the age of my phone, I suspected that the battery itself was wearing out, so I purchased a new one (a RAVPower 3220mAh Replacement Battery for Samsung Note 4 from Amazon - a battery with good reviews). However, the battery performance did not change.
Based on various recent reports about Bitcoin mining malware running on phones, today, I ran adb->shell ps -x and examined the output. The process system_server was reported as being responsible for 79% of the combined user and system times. The five processes /system/bin/surfaceflinger, /system/bin/mediaserver, com.android.systemui, /system/bin/mpdecision, and com.google.android.gms.persistent were reported as being responsible for an additional 11% of the combined user and system times; with 215 other processes being responsible for the final 10% of the combined user and system time. This makes me believe that there is no malware running that is hammering the battery.
What else could be responsible for the recent degradation of battery life? Could some device in the phone be degrading and drawing more current than it had previously? Note that I have not installed any system updates nor installed new apps recently.
Strange.... Quite awhile similar happened to me. But my thoughts was on the rooting side. Few years ago I had Note 1 and try a bunch of custom ROMs Battery life wasn't so good but I thought it was because of mostly bad battery optimization in many of custom ROMs. When I bought Note 4 I tell myself that rooting and custom ROMs are the past. But recently (God knows why) I rooted my Note 4. Since I had no time to install and play with custom ROM I left it just rooted for a few days with a stock ROM. Immediately after rooting, battery life was rapidly start to drop. I'm turning on my phone at 7 AM and about at 3 PM battery was dead. Since then battery lasts almost a whole day - at least until 7 PM. After rooting I didn't install any new app. I even didn't stop or uninstall any of apps or processes. Just did a root and nothing else. Immediately I install new stock ROM and unrooted my device. Battery life is now somewhere in the middle - dying at about 5 PM Yes, I know what is rooting and it shouldn't have anything with battery life. But at the other hand my case said that it does. Also I'm thinking - why most of manufacturers try so hard to stop users from rooting? Yes, that power shouldn't be added to any mobile phone user, but putting such effort to stop even power users of using advantages of rooted devices? Please! So much time and money spent just to "protect" users of doing some mess? There is no logic at all. So that is why I thought that Samsung (other manufacturers too) doing something "under the hood" with their devices... Yes many of "power users" will tel that I am wrong, but isn't it Samsung recently admit that they are listened (I'll be nice and won't say "spy") users of their smart TVs who had voice controls?
These days I've been looking for a new battery, but while I'm looking at your case, it seems that new battery wouldn't help me... or maybe it will? I'll give it a try.

Fix Random Reboots in Galaxy S6

I bought my Galaxy S6 in June 2015 and the phone now is 2.5 years old and battery has lost over 30% of its capacity and after the last update the phone started randomly rebooting 3-4 times per day. So I took inspiration from what Apple did with their older iPhones and customized my power saving option to just decrease the CPU performance by 30% to avoid the peak currents that causes the battery to shut down and I haven't had a single reboot ever since then. It does actually works.
The difference however is that I have intentionally done that based my choice. And I know why my device has slowed down now and I know that all I need to do to get the day 1 performance is get a fresh battery ;P.

well... in my case, (my phone is also around 2.5 years old) after replacing my battery with another s6's battery i had, the rebooting and freezing stopped for... probably 4 days... or so...
It happened again and i asked a friend of mine to look at it (he's an electronics hobbyist with some nice tools and phone breaking experience)... He said it appeared that there was some irregularities with the motherboard in my FIXED s6 compared to my other S6 with the broken lcd... i didn't understand the other stuff he said but we swapped motherboards... that was around Halloween 2017 and the phone has since behaved like it should.
P.S: im using the original battery now. not the swapped battery...
(P.P.S: how is this problem so common and no one knows how to fix it? my guess is it was built this way to upgrade to s7? meaning s7 people will start experiencing the same thing around 2.5 years or sooner..)
