List the best tweaks for your g3 here - G3 General

All g3 owners would like a page just for tweaks, can be kernl, apps, etc.Post here so we can share

Install Nova launcher or similar. Never use the LG launcher again. 90% of lag issues solved. I had to do a factory reset yesterday and the few minutes I spent on the stock launcher while preparing to restore apps with Titanium made me feel murderous.

Ya always use nova its golden,I also use android tweaker,g3 tweakbox, set CPU which seem to help..Any personal tweaks you found that work well
Sent from my VS985 4G using XDA Free mobile app

Tweakbox is a must, I prefer action launcher as I'm not a fan of the iPhone style app draw. Also makes the phone easy to use one handed. Last but not least I reduce the DPI to 560 so I get more content per screen

Yes I have DPI at 570 love it

1. Nova launcher with fast animations and fast scroll speed.
2. You need this in order for step 3 to work. Install SElinuxmodechanger from the play store and set it to permissive.
3. In system tuner go to system mgr/one-click and turn on boot for app optimizations and reduce device lags.
4. When you boot up your phone the first time my phone got locked on the home screen and I couldn't launch any of the apps so I rebooted again and now I am using it for awhile and it is very smooth and responsive.

My At&t G3 setup
short version of my setup below
Nova Launcher
A customized Zooper Widget (both on my home & lock screen)
A mod/hack I found on youtube to have HotSpot enabled
Towelroot used to enable root
Xposed with G3 TweakBox
G3 TweakBox I enable:
Bigger Caller Picture,
Hide Battery Full Notification
Disable Safety Headset Volume
Skip Tracks With Volume Keys
Carrier Text Visibilty (Hidden)
Other then that I just disabled a few apps (bloatware)
Upate new xposed module installed
This weekend I wanted to test the NFC paypass option but since my phone is rooted softcard app says wont work with root and did not open at all. I searched the web and found RootCloak an Xposed Module. Once I installed that and followed the directions by adding it to the list within the RootCloak app it opened up just fine. So the SoftCard app works just fine on a rooted phone with the RootCloak module installed. Also I opened Google wallet which opened and worked just fine no problem at all. ALSO forgot to mention I installed the Swype keyboard been using it since my old S2

I think greenify would be a better idea, don't you.I use gapps way to much.

Here is my setup at the moment:
Google Now Launcher + Xposed GEL Settings module - I've grown to love the Google Now Launcher with the Google Now integration so much that I'm just not happy with any other launcher. This Xposed module is a must have for those who wish to have most of the customizability of other launchers while using this launcher.
Greenify + Greeniy Xposed module enabled - Needless to say, possibly the best auto-hibernate-app utility out there. Helps with battery performance a lot.
SDMaid Pro (ROOT app) - Has a bunch of really useful utilities for cleaning duplicate files and maintaining the SD card in a clean state.
ROM Toolbox Pro - Used to be really useful in my old days of HTC Desire HD, customization features work well with CM ROMs. For now I use it occasionally for the many built-in apps including a terminal emulator, root browser, startup manager, build.prop editor among some others. Useful apps to have in one place.
Tasker - Needs no description. The most powerful automation tool ever! I use it to automatically change my wifi, data, sound & brightness settings based on whether I'm at work, home, sleeping or reading something on my phone.
G3 Tweaksbox - Thank god for Tweaksbox & root. With the unlocked bootloader I would've grown pretty frustrated if not for this. Currently using the Tweaksbox for UI Themes, Nav Bar color, Bigger caller picture, battery notification tweaks (especially that annoying wireless charging notification), etc. One of the most useful features I find is the Misc. Tweaks > "Enable Knock Off on Nav Bar" - This allows to knock off the phone by just tapping on the nav bar instead of all the way up at the status bar when using a non-stock launcher like I do. Also helpful is the feature to change the default messaging app color(hate the yellow!) found under "Message Tweaks > Theme color".
Network Speed Indicator (Xposed Module) - I like to monitor the network speeds when using the phone and for the time being when there is no support for this feature in Tweaksbox, this little Xposed module comes handy. Offers some customization as well!
Unicon (App/Xposed Mopdule) - Another must-have on any rooted phone that I have. Allows the use of icon packs on any launcher including the Google Now Launcher that I use. Changes the icon system wide. Great app!
You-tube AdAway (Xposed Module) - Gets rid of the annoying ads that popup now and again while playing vids on YouTube.
AppSettings (Xposed Module) - Allows changing per-app DPI for when you change you phone DPI and some apps get messed up.
I guess the above classify as tweaks, but while we're here, here are some apps that make my life a bit easier:
Talon for Twitter - UI customization, In-app browser + video. Used to use Falcon Pro but this one is equally good if not better with multitude of theme options
Unclouded - Keep tabs on your cloud storage accounts in one place. Useful.
Zooper Widget - Must have for theme & UI customization fanatics.
Sidebar / Switchr - Both from the same dev, both offer options to switch between apps from any screen. I used Sidebar before, Switchr offers much more now. Both are worth a try.
LinkBubble - Really really useful for surfing various links from say, your twitter feed. Loads links is a small bubble while you continue to do whatever you're doing. It's one of those you-don't-know-what-you're-missing-till-you've used-it features.
VSCO Cam - Really great alternative to the stock camera app. Offers much more editing features.
HeadsUp - If you've been missing heads-up notifications from CM/PA ROMs(like me) this is a nifty little app that brings over the functionality.
There. Most of them are probably well-known & that was a long post, but I hope it helps someone to find something new and/or useful

App optimizations: boost app loading, optimize databases, clear caches, clear clipboard.
Reduce device lags: increased responsiveness, eliminate some lags.
I don't know what each one does exactly what but I know that by switching both on I have entropy on and fs trimmer on.

Thanks. I'll have to look at these more closely.

Since i use play store and so only once a week, I just freeze it with titanium backup an d defrost it when I need it. Indeed improves battery life.
Not to forget to change and delete the default lg keyboard.

ZTE Blade Optimisation Guide

I have had the ZTE Blade for about a month now and I have noticed that sometimes it can become a bit slow and laggy but with the use of some free apps from the market I was able to help speed up the Blade's performance without much effort.
Advanced Task Killer
Launch the app > Press "menu" button > Go to settings > Change "Auto Kill Level" to "Safe" also change "Auto Kill Frequency to "When screen off"
AutoStart Killer
Disable all apps you don't need to start up when the phone boots
Launcher Pro
Make sure Launcher Pro is the default launcher. I recommend that you only have 3 homescreens with minimal use of widgets. i have found that keeping the default settings improves performance.
Zeam
I found that LauncherPro and Zeam are similar in performance but they are both great launcher replacements.
Titanium Backup
Only needed if you are using a stock rom or one with a lot of apps you don't use or want. Remove any Orange or ZTE apps you don't use to free up space on the phone's internal memory.
Cheers for the info
ive been using TB to remove apps or old apps works well and seems to speed things up
ive also been using cache cleaner and rebooting (which i hope helps keep things running a little better)
Cheers

If you want to change home launcher in order to optimize performance, Zeam is the best choice. It has a very low footprint (and a very handy home screen, btw.).
There's no way a task killer is going anywhere near my phone......
Agreed - Zeam seems to be a bit smoother than launcher pro on the stock rom. On 2.2 theres very little difference between them. Personally i prefer ADW - although pretty much the only thing it has over Launcher Pro is the ability to set three columns instead of four in the app drawer. (sad i know)
The best optimization is to get 2.2 on there
I've not tried out zeam yet, but running Launcher pro on 2.2, with memory settings set to 10, and caching enabled, I find it hard to believe that much it going to beat it, mine is liquid smooth on the home screen.
Mike
I've just tried out Zeam, and actually I was suprised at how smooth it is, not quite a smooth going into the appdraw, but really quite good
Mike
Wait till Launcher Pro get its rewrite, then we will see who is smoother
You shouldn't use an auto task killer. Autostarts is a better bet to prevent stuff you don't want starting the first place. And Watchdog if the reason you're wanting to kill stuff is that they're going wrong.
Zeam is faster than LauncherPro imo. It's just a shame it doesn't have the option to hide apps in the app drawer.
faster blade
use adw launcher it is the best homescreen by miles, once you get used to it all others will seem pointless, stick to a minimal amount of widgets and a max of 3 screens.
a good task manager I've found is task panel x. it gives you a widget for your homescreen with a kill all button and has ignore and autokill options to keep things running smoothly
avoid live wallpapers like the plague, try using something like wallswitch instead to auto change your wallpapers. there are loads of apps to get nice wallpapers and most of them look miles better than the gimmicky live wallpapers anyway.
I have spent hours trying out every widget and app out there and can highly recommend the following...
My current widgets
countdown timer widget,
mort player music widget,
sticky pad pro widget (totally customizable and great for shopping lists)
guage battery widget
jorte calander
wifi manager
task panel
widgetsoid
digital clock widget
favourite apps
angry birds
system panel light (best looking task manager by far)
app brain (better than the market)
chrome to phone
daily horoscope
ezpdf reader (has night mode)
laputa (excellent free ebook reader)
myplayer (old version still works)
Slideit keyboard (like swype but much better)
uk tv droid (excellent tv guide with reminders)
Uloops studio (THIS ROCKS, BEST ANDROID APP EVER)
wall switch
if anybody knows of any better alternatives to these I would love to hear about them.
what to kill though
hi,
I have had my blade for about a month now, and it is my first Android.
this thread is just what I am needing right now to try and optimize it
and get better battery life for use on my golf course with Freecaddie.
currently I am using 2 apps: Advanced Task Killer (the little green man icon) and 'Quick Settings'
and have set phone to 2G, with Auto sync and Background Data disabled.
I fancy trying Titanium Backup and Autostart Killer as mentioned earlier
but have not the faintest idea as to what Apps to backup, nor which to Autokill.
I actually only need my Blade for basic phone usage, as a Satnav, and for Golfing.
if anyone can advise me what to 'kill' I would be very greatful.
a great forum this, and a Happy New Year to all.
Kevin
I have now installed Autostart Killer and quite like it,
but Titanium Backup seems to be for rooted phones only and mine is not rooted.
is there a similar app to Titanium Backup for non rooted phones ?
thanks,
Kevin
Yeh, I'm kind of in a dilema whether to use advanced task killer or not..
can anyone point me in the right direction?

Add to whitelist anything you want to keep open it doesn't display core processes anyway so can't go wrong.
There's an ilogic in the logic as far as android is concerned apparently there is no need for taskillers due to androids own task manager, happen to disagree as any process increases battery also many programs use net in background to which again uses battery, the argument you will find is in the clock we use to clear "doesn't need to be done every minute" also another app worth getting if rooted is Droid wall a firewall very handy to stop program communications..

Launchers
I wholeheartedly agree with 'Twistedvegan' that the ADW Launcher is the best.
amongst it's many good points are the ability to change the 3 main launcher icons,
and to customomize what you add to each screen. (eg: I have just icons with no text for my main apps)
and I have tried all the most popular launchers

APUS Launcher / Best NO-APK-DRAWER launcher

APUS Launcher
- small
- fast
- no apk drawer (like MIUI and iOS)
- widget support
- inegrated notification toolbar
- wallpaper blur
- quick settings
- smart folders
- Apus wallpapers
- swipe to switch folders
- photo story
UPDATE: APUS v1.3.3 Update
1.APUS Wallpaper, providing beautiful, high quality and free wallpapers.
2.Swipe to switch different folders, improved efficiency of opening apps.
3.APUS Tools supported. You can easy to launch useful tools.
4.Apps in folder can be sorted by alphabetical or use frequency.
5.Arabic, German, French, Hindi, Indonesian, Thai, Italian, Vietnamese supported.
IMO this is best launcher without apk-drawer on Playstore
chekit out

I don't find any reason for accessing internet with a time gap even when the recommended apps list is off. And by killing the background apps completely you can boost any launcher. So nothing special.
I switched to it. Had to turn app recommend off. Was using nova prime like everyone bit fed up with tinkering and the space all those custom packs take up

Why*
This is an ignorant statement.
Why would you make your phone like Ubuntu?
Why would you make your phone like Firefox?
Why would you make your phone like Windows?
Why would you make your phone like ChromeOS?
Because Android. That's why.
We can ultimately customize our phone to whatever degree we wish, why not take advantage of it?
Hi. Does anyone know how to uninstall the apus launcher? There is no uninstall option in the playstore, es file explorer deletes the file but the app generates it again and deactivating it from the settings doesnt work aswell it activates on its own. [Discussion] Lollipop on Fire HD

November 30 EDIT: This was written for Developers Preview. Probably much will apply to later releases, but it needs updating.
Here's a place to discuss Lollipop, unrelated to doing the update. (Bibikalka's how-to-update thread is here.)
Got Lollipop? What's your take on speed/stability/UI? Got a favorite tip or workaround--or just want to compare notes? Me, too. I'm posting here!
For people trying to decide about upgrading, here's my quick take:
Speed (subjective, depends on use) I don't use Fire for gaming. To me, speed seems same as 4.5.4
Stability (EDIT day 12): So far, just great. Hung it once with some cross-purpose Xposed modules, but it booted out no problem.
UI improvements: Lockscreen wallpaper; normal-looking launcher; add wallpaper/widgets/shortcuts to launcher; Lolli-style nav bar, notifications and recents (see attachments)
UI cons (for me): Can only add widgets to stock launcher (won't stick on custom), but stock has no Settings so gotta live with stock icons, persistent amazon.com search bar, 1-page dock, non-customizable status/nav bar, and more
EDIT day 7: People have already posted workarounds for some of these, as well as thoughts on speed and stability. I highly recommend installing Xposed; it's turning out to be very useful.
EDIT day 12: We have widgets! (post #34) Try converting custom launcher to system app. Works for Nova, anyway
EDIT Aug 16: Kindle Reader is broken. You can access books through Bookstore app or offline with hacked app. (post #37)
EDIT Aug 22, OS 5.2.2: Sure, Play Store is broken --fortunately, HDXposed module makes it work--but Books and other Amazon apps are fixed. See @meganoahj posts here
Random thoughts:
- What's with the Developer Preview not having developer options? (EDIT! Oh, heck, it's there! Just multi-tap the serial number, like since forever!)
- Expanded external market link choices! Haha! They include: Ask, go to appstore, don't go to appstore. "Don't go" just means do nothing; still need to block appstore to make in-app links open Play Store.
(attachments)
1 - pull-down notifications on lockscreen
2 - stock launcher w/clock widget
3 - Nova w/transparent nav bar/status bar (no widgets!)
transparent nav bar and widgets
Do you have translucent navbar/status bar on stock lollipop launcher? (I could swear I did until I set something in Nova and rebooted. Now they're both 100% black on stock.) Also, anyone found a way to get widgets on a custom launcher? Thanks!
Hey is there any chance you can see if hangouts will push notifications on lollipop update? I don't receive notifications until the app is open on 4.5.4 thanks!
I pm'd you.
EDIT: No, Hangouts didn't notify. Gmail & G+ do, xda sometimes. FB, idk. What's the deal?!
I have to toggle WiFi to get it to connect sometimes. Do we loose root after factory reset?
Stability seems rock solid, speed is the same. I disable as many Amazon apps as I can. Running Xposed w/ GB and a few others, works flawlessly (for the most part). I've had trouble getting Viper audio working, though.
IMO it's a decent update, worth daily use.

YMMV with GravityBox, but I think it's better suited for Lollipop on this device... Amazon seems to have made less modifications to Android this time, making it possible to modify multitasking and the navbar, which was never possible with KK.

Yep, though all I did was disable the "Unified Search" apk. After installing Google Search, setting it to default and a reboot, it seems to have replaced it everywhere.

Replace or delete Amazon.com search bar
Thanks @pcrhckyman for this! I've added a small variation. (Note: The "Unified Search" app is com.amazon.kindle.unifiedSearch)

Just disable the Unified Search app. If the bar turns white and doesn't disappear, reboot. FWIW, the stock browser actually uses Google search engine now, not Bing.
Everything running fine, feels just as fast as 4.5.3 as least. I haven't had any bugs of fcs yet! Running Nova Launcher and xposed (some tweaks with gravity box but that's it). Worth mentioning some things in gravity box don't work, for example I can't get expanded desktop or get rid of the navigation bar.

Push notifications aren't working for me at all since updating to Lollipop. Has anyone been able to get them to work?

Everything running fine, feels just as fast as 4.5.3 as least. I haven't had any bugs of fcs yet! Running Nova Launcher and xposed (some tweaks with gravity box but that's it). Worth mentioning some things in gravity box don't work, for example I can't get expanded desktop or get rid of the navigation bar.

I'm using "Force Immersive Mode" module for expanded desktop. It's per-app and I use it on (stock) launcher. Also enabled translucent decor in GB. It works on both bars in launcher (nice look, I think) but only on status bar in some apps. (You know, Nova had its own expanded desktop option, which seems to have gone missing, kinda like widgets. You can't get widgets on Nova, right?)
Try nav bar tweaks in GB again. I definitely was able to disable nav bar (lol, good thing I had pie controls on!) Also, nav bar height is working.
Working smooth
No problem for me either.
Everything seems stable, no bugs.
thanks a lot.

Am I going to have to revert to 4.5.3 to gain root or is there a way to gain it in the developer's build? I'm really new to using ADB and worried about screwing something up.

Perhaps, try the latest KingRoot, see what it does?
Otherwise there is no known way to get root from within 5.2.0 You need to have root and then install 5.2.0 while keeping root.

i hide my navbar and Stausbar so i rely on
Chromepie - enables pie settings in chrome, the shortcut to bookmarks is really helpful
Force Immersive Mode - to make all apps fullscreen and hide statusbar
App Settings - to give some apps tablet like settings with the bigger screen
Gmail theme Engine - gives my gmail a dark theme
MIUI 8 Tweaks - i prefer it over xMIUI has more options though i have both
MIUI Permissions Remover
No Device Check - disable device compatibility check
No Lock Home - for some reason this doesnt work on MIUI but i hope it gets fixed
OK google for 3rd party activities - i only want OK google to be on with certain apps not everthing
Secure Settings - i use this with tasker
Swype Row - add a numbers row to swype
Swype Tweaks - different tweaks for swype
Xnotifications - this is awesome as it puts a mark as read button in gmail
Youtube Adaway - block youtube ads
Youtube Backround Playback - this with adaway essentially gives you youtube red

The most detail they gave is that they will prioritize pushing this update right after the Mi5 receives Nougat.

Thanks for the list! I am now using Force Immersive Mode, and it's fantastic! Tried Gmail theme engine but didn't like it, animation with dark background seems off a bit. No Lock Home also didn't work for me.

It is good alternative I'm using it as well but not as many features I used the cell tower unlock frequently with my app radio and tasker and I miss that

yeah, for the max. but not for the mix.
i was in the beta team 2 years ago, then i stopped beta testing so they removed me from the beta team. i reapplied 2 days ago. they didn't approve me yet.
i hope i can help them for the bug hunt in miui 9 / nougat for the mi mix AND get the release earlier in the closed alpha
i'll report back if there's any news
Are there any news concerning Android 7? Just came from Google...

Same here, can't possibly imagine myself giving up xposed. The xMIUI module is simply too awesome!
No xposed, no party.

Thanks for sharing all these module, I'm using the most and my favorite module is XPOSED EDGE!
Where is the MIUI 9 that people are talking about? Today, Xiaomi realesed the mi6 and I didnt see any link talking about the same.

Like the phone so far but ..... need help with a hidden menu

Hi,
In every other android based phone I've owned I've always had an option to hide apps I don't use allot so you just drag an app up to the top and there are usually two options: Uninstall and Remove which places it in a vault for safe keeping. This doesn't seep to be present on this phone and I HATE cluttered desktops so I'm a bit bummed about this so I thought I'd reach out and see if I'm not figuring this out.
I am now aware of the right swipe that brings me to some other settings but there is no app vault there for hiding apps I don't use.
Also is there a way to uninstall allot of the bloat ware this phone came with? I use Google apps for most of my needs and Opera as my main browser so having these other apps on board isn't much to my liking and again without a vault of some kind to take them off of hte desktop...... no fun!
I do know about the combining apps into "folders" and renaming them but I'd just like the apps GONE that I don't and never will use.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
You could just download another launcher with the option to vault apps and about the bloatware you can follow this tutorial right here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-7/how-to/remove-redmi-note-7-bloatware-root-t3925049
Can you recommend a launcher that's stable and good? I've tried a few on my tablets but ended up going back to the default as they were mostly unstable... I'm sure it's going to be different on a phone but it was a bit disheartening to try about 4 launchers on my Lenovo tablet and just didn't like them at all.
Thanks for the quick reply!
Nova Launcher is pretty good
Give a try to poco launcher.
Very stable.
I use Evie Launcher, lightweight amd simple to use

You can try CPL (Customized Pixel Launcher) from playstore. I guess CPL is the best in term of stability, optimizations and LOTs of customization, you wont find in any launcher IMO
No need for Nova launcher or Poco ,new system launcher alfa version ,have new options , swipe up to app drawer..
Hmmm, but if there is an App Drawer in a newer version of the launcher that ships with this phone I wasn't aware of that but the main thing for me, besides the drawer or vault or what ever it's called (too many strange labels to understand what I'm trying to say ) I really need that bit when I'm dragging up to allow me to remove the app from the desktop. In the default there is that weird option that seems to replace the "remove" option.... called "Dual apps" which I have NO IDEA what that's all about and really don't care.
I'm using Poco and it's nice enough. I love the dark theme option but one thing I am missing is when one gets new phone calls or texts the icons in the lower bar area usually changes to indicate how many there are waiting. With the Poco set up there doesn't seem to be any indicators like that... or perhaps it's because I changed the icon set out?? Not sure what's caused that to stop working.... Weird.
Thanks for all the suggestions good people!
