Camera Tests Z3 - Post your pics here - - Xperia Z3 General

in theory Sony Xperia Z3 has the same sensor of Z1, Z1 Compact and Z2, but with the new lens, camera firmware and a revised hardware support Sony promises great improvements
Actually new lens are 25mm for a good wide-angle, firmware seems to work better than previous Z2 and hardware should work better in low light conditions. Now you can raise the ISO to 12800, too. Autofocus is faster
Then we could use this thread to collect our shots taken from Sony Z3..It would be great to compare photos with the other devices
I will do once I get my Z3
Let's go!

Here is some pictures

Nice pics from West Brom

Hmm.. They seem to be OK but not excellent.. Not sure if worth changing from my m8 (sure it's better camera on z3 but not THAT much)

I think it's a tapatalk resizing problem...it isn't good to upload high quality photos

Those look superb. I need to go someplace nice to test the cam on my Z3

I don't want to start any war or anything and my z3 is already in the post waiting for me but looking at these pictures I am really not sure if I should get it. I am compering side by side to m8 pictures and I could say that 55% of the time m8 makes better pictures..

Wait and do side by side. Then zoom and crop. The results will be very revealing to you. I had the M8 for 5 months. Great phone....great build quality....great UI....very fast and the boom sound is amazing. But the camera was very disappointing. Sorry but 4MP is still 4MP even if they are Ultra pixels.

I learned since getting this phone just how irrelevant mega pixels are .Is this better then my htc one? I imagine so,I cant do a comparison as i no longer have my htc but iam pretty sure this camera is better but is it ALOT better? I would have to say no.I expected the camera to be alot better then it is personally but i saw mentioned that it may improve after a firmware update so fingers crossed because if this is supposed to be one of the best camera's on a smartphone then the competition must be lacking

From the specs atleast the sensor size on z3 is bigger than htc one m8. So it should make a difference in low light photography

Yeah must agree. I have now taken some comparison shots with both of them and z3 is quite a lot better. Yet it also leaves something to improve.

The error in the camera app is because you have "Ok Google" enabled on any screen in Google now, I had this same issue and turned it off until Sony release a fix for it.

Thanks for the comparison pictures. I own a Z2 myself and the picture quality seems very similar to the Z3's.
Maybe it's just me, but I personally preferred the M8's pictures! They looked sharper and less noise, even if it can't zoom as much as the Z3's pics

most of these are average at best.

There's no way the M8 camera is better. It is one of the lowest rated cameras of any current smartphone. Many professional tests have been conducted, check multiple websites if you don't believe me.
It's possible you either have a faulty unit, unlocked your bootloader which broke the sensor software (read about it in another thread) or Sony need to release a firmware update to fix this.

Iam guessing a firmware update will improve things because i too am underwhelmed with the camera on this phone and i surprisingly thought the m8 pictures looked better in this thread which is kinda embarrassing for sony if you ask me! I havent played around much with the camera if iam honest but with the few pics i have taken i have found sharpness to be lacking ALOT and the flash is way too bright and ruining night time pics

Our other thread became a 'device specific' review sticky, so wanted to share some lowlight pictures from Z3+, S6, & Z2 (in that order) here. All are taken in 'auto' mode. But feel free to include daylight pictures and other devices as well!

Z3+ improved over Z3 there.
Wow thanks, so without heat problem which can be resolve after an update, it it pretty close for the perfect smartphone ?
No Ram problem, Waterproof, Good Sound, Stereo speaker, LDAC for future compatibles devices, Good pictures for the back and front camera, Good Battery Life. And the camera does't go out as S6 or IPhone 6, etc...

I would like some full resolution samples from the front camera. In fact, I'm searching like crazy the exact resolution of the front camera all over the internet. How much does it's width and height measure? How many pixels?
It would be cool if you uploaded a screenshot with the camera app shwing the resolution settings to see the other resolutions supported.

I dont have the time for a full comparison today but will update this post with a comparison soon
Alright quick comparison with my Z2 - Z3+ and my QX30
There is of course no contest with the QX30 but I think the Z3+ produced a better pciture mostly because colours were better and light didn't affect it as much as on Z2

Sharpening is a bit overdone, sensor is certainly noisier than other competing flagships, colour balance is pretty good but can sometimes be quite a bit over saturated outside in good light.
You have to take pictures in manual mode 8mp for best results. 23mp is pretty awful sadly.
Here is a low light picture of my living room.
40 iso, 0.5s shutter time.
https://goo.gl/photos/ZZVmmP6LbSTC7iw27
It's actually pretty nice imo. But not easy to achieve without optimising settings and resting on something to keep camera steady

Like previous models sony lens is great but firmware must be improved. When we have good light pics are fine. Other producers like Samsung use a SONY lens and pics are very good. it's firmware problem IMO.

I´ve noticed that the laserfocus doesn´t work as promised. I have tried 3 different phones, 2 XZ´s and 1 X Compact. The laserfocus does not help and read distance as promised.
Thou the sensor does what it´s supposed to when trying it in the service menu ToF senor is what it´s called.
Hold the XZ/XC infront of another camera either computer or phone you can see the laserfocus send and retrive distance information constantly when in service menu.
Going into the stock camera app when opening the first time the laser sends a beam once and after that nothing.
The only way to trigger the laserfocus is to half press the shutter button to focus and this makes me belive they haven´t activated the laserfocus for some reason because it works when tested in the service menu but not in the camera app.
I have tried other manufactures that uses laserfocus and their works alot better and i have even owned a LG G4 which had laserfocus that worked as promised.
Don´t know what Sony have missed within the software but they have missed something because this ain´t right.
I have been in contact with Sony Mobile about this and they say that they are gonna check this out and get back to me next week.
I really hope the can figure out what is wrong because i have paid alot of money for my XZ and i want a fully functional phone!!

I was planning on buying the X compact because my Z3C was sent to service, but it was repaired and came back. A friend of mine from UK bought the XZ, though (had the same issue as me, Z3 sent to service) and he reportedly has the same problem with the laser focus.

I really don't see any phones that could replace my Z3C for now, sadly.
I think this is by design, for a photo there is no need to constantly poll distance, keeping in mind the focus point can be custom, the distance information only needs to be sampled once before taking the photo.
I haven't tested what method it uses to take video where polling could be beneficial. But for me it seems sufficient that the laser only appears the split second before taking a photo and for me it works with both shutter button and tapping on screen to take photo.
That said, I noticed sometimes it can focus almost instantly and sometimes takes a bit longer, i suspect the laser isn't that reliable as a range finder due to different surface types /reflections, when the laser works it focusses almost instantly, else it uses PDAF or something ^^, just speculation.

Well if you open the service menu and try the ToF sensor you will see that the laserfocus constantly reads distance but when opening the stock camera app the laserfocus stops reading distance constantly! That is the thing i´ve been trying to tell Sony Mobile..
In the camera app the laser only sends a quick beam when opened and do the same again when pressing the shutter button other then that nothing happens when it comes to the laser which is supposed to help camera focus in low-light and macro shots and so forth.

the xz on your shot is darker (1/125 shutter time vs 1/80) but also looks sharper/better than the more exposed z5 pic. that said the difference is not huge, specially if you change the settings (theres a modded camera out there to force the shutter time on the z5)
thx for the link
(also [email protected], all pics in the comparison tool are out of focus. like seriously, even if the phone sometimes fail to focus they could at least check that...)
Absolutely! The phone focuses fine.

The hdr there is in optimal situations . But try xperia xz...and tell me where are those artifacts in photos...there are more on x performance (but it have a greater score there). Stabilizzation same of x-performance? What the... the 5 axis stabilizzation do a greater stabilizzation than x-performance eis. Rgb sensor is usless in xz? More real colours on xz than x-performance. Focus the same of x-performance??? The laser autofocus is usless? NO. It's working better than hybrid focus of x,x-performance and z5 series, who have serious problems with macro photos (you must use zoom to do macro shoots). But x performance have 88 and xz 87.... This is crazy. I try both ...and xz have a very superior camera (expecially in auto) . The 3 sensors works great and xz do a really better night shoots than x-performance. On -performance you must be stable to do shoots or the photo became moved and noisy. On xz point and shoot! So...this camera review is absurd....

I'm curious if the quality improves with respect to post processing artifacts when you use another camera app like opencamera or camera-fv5 or footej-camera ?
And if camera2api is actually available wouldn't the other apps take advantage of that?
I had a z3 before, and i always got better shots on camera-fv5. My xz is arriving this week, looking FWD to see how it compares with my OnePlus3 and Samsung s7edge

When the results are in line with your rhetoric you praise DXOmark. When they are different you are sure they are rigged. Great logic !
Rear camera sucks indeed mostly because of weak dynamic range but front shooter works better. So I guess if you want to have good pics use front camera lol

Allright. I just think it essentially doesn't suck in dynamic range anyway...

Camera issues?

I'm planning to pick up a G6 this Friday to replace my G5. But I'm slowly becoming aware of the camera issues that are being posted. Is this something you think will get addressed with a software update, or should I wait a few weeks for the S8 even though I'm not a big fan of curved screens?

What camera issues? Mine has been working great.
I've got no issues at all. I LOVE the camera. Even in auto mode it's amazing. Really really happy that they got rid of the laser focus. Photo attached is no editing just wide angle and hand held
There's a thread titled "LG G6: Is it worth buying?" where a bunch of people are talking about the bad camera quality.

There's no camera issue, it's just not as great a camera as it should be. If you take photos in wide angle they are superb, but single lens shots are sub parts. It's digital processing is awful. Hopefully there's an update to fix.

how's it compare to the GS7? I just pulled the trigger the other day and it's coming tomorrow. I could not find any full review articles or videos on youtube with the final software and hardware version. I wanted to see comparisons to the GS7. I finally got tired of waiting for reviews and went ahead and ordered it. Hope i made the right decision. I'm pretty picky about cameras.
I love the camera one thing I really really love is auto focus is much better than the lg g4 was. Also love that just tapping a a different spot on camera can easily adjust the exposure while maintaining a full frame focus. I'm the pictures at times from the gs7 may appear better but it also depends on what device they are being viewed on. I mean if I watch 1080 videos on my low end barely HD monitor th3 comparisons are useless. Sadly not enough pictures ever get printed. Plus wide angle for the win. Sample quick take from the beach on sunday.

Reviews already show the S8 selfie camera is awful too. What's the point of auto focus if it still makes you look like a cartoon and "beautify's" everything. Side by side comparisons online with the Pixel and iphone 7 show the S8 (and samsung) is still awful for selfies.
The selfie camera is a little blurry but not that bad. For 5MP it's to be expected. Yes, it's not as versatile as the back camera setup, but I guess if you're not used to having to plan shots to get the composition you want, it can seem crap by today's standards. blurry in darker shots, but does well enough for me. Using the filters that are on by default make it worse too. (Can't guarantee that the image I attached doesn't have any filters added as I don't remember when I took the shot. I think it is slightly filtered)
I was concerned every shot with the back camera would need to be "tweaked", but I'm surprised how well it does with auto. You can modify gamma on the fly too which is nice (and necessary with more difficult shots). Keep in mind though if you're cropping to 16:9, then it will affect perceived image quality. That can affect the blurriness of the non-wide angle lens tbh since it's the lesser of the two. Both take great shots though on automatic.
The wide angle is the best one of all three.
I attached a photo taken with selfie lens. You can judge for yourself. Personally, I think it looks fine. Most shots are going to be viewed on mobile so resolution won't be as important as the back camera. I don't use selfie cam too often though, but if it's your primary camera, then yes you will be disappointed by the step down and will likely want to go for something with a higher res like S8...
This is comparison of night shots of two back lens... wide angle versus non-wide angel camera... as you can see, both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Here are a bunch of microshots. Does it have it's weaknesses? Oh yes. Is it a bad camera. Not at all.
Pro Tip: Sometimes I notice sometimes you have to "zoom in" just a tad in order to get the autofocus to catch stuff up close but it's rare. My point and shoot does the same thing. (Also there is manual focus)
No issues at all with the cameras here. FWIW, I like them a lot better than the G4.
Just because of this thread, I had to try in near total darkness... It turned out pretty clear. I'm not disappointed at all. I came from S7 Edge, and I can say for a quick low light picture, it is a "little" better, but by no means is this camera a disappointment. But, when there's light, it's better than S7. I'm very happy with the phone.
I am having horrible camera pictures. Worse then the last few phones i've had. The panorama has double images and it's wavy. The reviews on youtube says it works good. all the pictures look like the grass and trees was painted with water colors. it's awful. I'm worried about what I"m going to do now. I can't keep my GS7 since I upgraded so there's no turning back unless i exchange my phone but for what model? I don't want a Galaxy with a curved screen so the options are limited at Verizon. I would upload some images but how do i post the images from my computer? The image button wants a url.

I tried auto mode with and without HDR. Btw there's no HDR button so I have to go in the settings every time I want to turn it on our off. Totally unacceptable. I tried manual mode too. I have it at 16:9 at the highest resolution. Is there a quality setting I missed?

I have got a screen shot of my settings. It was done in auto. I used the mode/filter called "1839". Also, if you tap on the object you want it to focus on, you'll see a slider (I circled it in other screen shot) which your can use to make adjustments to make pictures clearer in low light or put your own tweak on a picture.

[Camera Thread] Post your best shots with the 5T !

Here you can share all your best pictures taken with your new Oneplus 5T
lowlight shots aint bad out of the box :good:
Portrait Mode, unedited
From a gig last night. The camera is decent. Works if you put effort in it. This is taken with gcam. Gcam uses only the 16Mpix sensor (at least I think so.)

One of the pictures I took last night from my first attempts at astrophotography using 5T. It's difficult to do and time consuming considering its a 30 second exposure.
I haven't edited it, this is on ISO 1600 and 20" exposure.

that's a superb shot
---------- Post added at 07:01 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:58 PM ----------
has anyone tried using a third party app like open camera, camera fv-5, or snap camera with 100% photo quality setting?
Open camera is free and should give a good indication if photo quality is improved by reducing the jpeg compression that seems to be causing the oil color blur with the op software.

Thanks.
Tried opencamera also. Images came out very grainy and terrible looking. That shot above is taken with Google Cam. Probably the version which was first optimized for 820/821/835. The one with no hdr settings in the menu at all.
Okay so, what's really good with this camera? I've been seeing so many mixed reports of the camera being really good, and then the whole "oil painting" quality.
I'm waiting for my 5T in the mail, and this'll be my first OP device ever. Camera isn't super important to me, but I'd like to have something that out-preforms my current Nexus 5X.

If you don't care for the second sensor, not much in my opinion.
Lowlight is probably not bad, if you think brighter = better.
All OP5 / 5T comparisons I've seen so far showed a brighter image, but also more processing artifacts.
In my opinion their second sensor is just there to keep the portrait mode and doesn't offer much more as the lowlight capabilities
are realized through software processing. Don't see any reason why this processing shouldn't also work on the OP5's main sensor,
other than them wanting to have a selling point for the 5T.
Some samples which show the issue:

Btw, this is what their portrait mode produces outdoors in daylight: https://i.imgur.com/5x1ikOs.jpg
This is what my OP3 produces indoors with HDR+ (I stopped using the stock camera months ago because of how bad the postprocessing is):
https://photos.google.com/share/AF1...?key=OEk1SkNwQXR3VVhTaWQ5Ulc0Ti1feXZ1WmNyN2VR
There is just no competition.
The fact that most will look at their photos on their phone and that many samples online are downsampled is probably the reason many don't see this issue.
As much as I would like to upgrade to the OP5T, I am keeping my OP3 because of the camera.

I understand what you're getting at. However, your two example images from the 5T don't really demonstrate the issue you're talking about to the severity you're talking about. OnePlus's post processing isn't good and it does process detail out of the second image, but the detail loss is quite miniscule. And that aside, it's quite a good picture. The first picture was compressed due to imgur, so it wasn't really indicative. Also, since you'd probably be more knowledgeable on this topic than me, I wonder: other than the dot pattern issue at full crop, what's wrong with the GCam on the 5T? On the 5, it seems to work well.
