[Mod][How to][Updated Camera 3.3.20.8]Unlock Advanced Camera Settings | Non-Root/Root - Moto G General

Finally! The moment all of you have been waiting for. This is the Tutorial on "How to unlock the advanced camera settings in the motorola camera app" (ladybug icon) :victory:
first of all, this could be the most useful tutorial for stock rom users, since most of the custom rom already have this.
This mod should also work with:
MOTO DEVICES
-Moto E ------------------Confirmed working by @AshuGite and @spiked_mistborn
-Moto G 4G (LTE)--------Confirmed working by many users
-Moto X (2013)-----------Not confirmed, yet. But it should work
-Moto G 2 Gen. (2014)---Confirmed working by @prateek.khurana31
-Moto X 2 Gen. (2014)---Confirmed working by @neh4pres
OTHER DEVICES:
-Xperia Z2----------------Confirmed working except for recording Videos(missing libs) by @ogunja
If you owned one of the Devices mentioned above and the Mod is working for you, pls let me know for which specific Device it worked, hit the thanks Button below and feel free to open a new Thread in one of the above mentioned Devices' Forums, mentioning this Thread. Thank you
EASY METHOD
For NON-ROOT and ROOT users:
DON'T WORRY, this camera app will install as a seperate app so you will still have the original Motorola Camera app
Here is the camera app with unlocked hidden menu for non-root and root users: Motorola Camera v3.3.20.8 (unlocked hidden menu). Just install as normal apk. Thanks to @jefish for making this awesome Mod
How to access the hidden settings: After you swipe out the settings wheel you will have a "Ladybug" icon in the lower right corner (Screenshots below at the end of this post). just press it enjoy the advanced settings for your Camera
Recommended Settings based on @juanchotazo99 tests: Turn off Wavelet Noise, as it screws up your image quality. Morpho VNR seems to reduce noise in the cameras live view (not on the final image). QC Tintless seems to reduce the reddish tint on final images. So it is up to you if you want to set the last 2 options to on or off
ATTENTION: The Methods below are only necessary if you have ROOT and don't want to install the modded apk.
If you have the Play Store Version of the camera app, pls uninstall and flash one of these flashable zips through CWM Recovery. Thanks to @lost101 for making these.
Moto G (2013) 4.4.4 Stock Camera app: (Wavelet noise, Morpho VNR and QC Tintless settings available)
or
Moto G 2nd Gen. (2014) 4.4.4 Stock Camera app
If you don't want to manually edit your build.prop, you can have a look at this Xposed Module which unlocks the hidden settings without editing anything. Thanks to @S0bes for his Xposed Module
Also, check out @juanchotazo99 's awesome camera test with this new settings in this post. this is also really helpful to understand where the photos get better quality.
Completely Manual Method
Here is the tutorial for those who want to get the hidden settings by manually editing the build.prop
Step 1
Make sure you device is rooted and download or use any File Explorer that has root access.
Step 2
navigate to: Root>System>build.prop
edit the build.prop file (MAKE A BACKUP FIRST) and search for this line:
Code:
ro.build.tags=release-keys
and change it to
Code:
ro.build.tags=test-keys
and save the file.
Step 3
Finally reboot your Device and you're done.
Now after you swipe out the settings wheel you will have a "Ladybug" icon in the lower right corner (pictures below). just press it enjoy the advanced settings for your Camera :victory:

Post process noise reduction, morpho VNR (NR, what else could that be, than noise reduction?). Let's disable these two settings and test. I'll give the camera a try tomorrow in daylight with these changes. I mean, scenes with foliage and plants, that suffer greatly from the noise reduction and become painting-like in pictures. Before, and after.
Thanks a lot for this!!
Hidden above is the original. Let's make a better use of this post.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bringing all of this to Moto's attention:
In my camera testing post quoted above I had added the following at its end:
Based on all the previous testing done by people in Motorola's official thread on Moto G's camera quality, BEFORE what @GodOfPsychos has discovered, a Motorola representative stated the following:
https://forums.motorola.com/posts/e2f2722bfc?page=1
https://forums.motorola.com/posts/e2f2722bfc?commentId=801623#801623
We’ve been exploring several options to improve the camera. Some items are already on the list – we will fix the intermittent split-flash problem that produces a picture split into light and dark halves. We are working on the intermittent red-tint issue. Other areas are more difficult because any change to improve one area will create other artifacts -- and someone will object to those.
That being said, we have a plan to improve, and much of it is based on the feedback gathered from this thread and others. Thank you. It won’t be fast because it requires changes beyond what we can do through updates to the Camera app itself. But we’re going to make changes that in addition to the items above, should improve sharpness and detail.
I cannot comment on the timing of updates, so I can only ask for patience as we work through this. And again, thanks for the feedback; the photos and observations posted and sent via email were instrumental in helping us get to this point.

Image quality improvements have been promised for the next update, that would be Android L.
Android L is itself a big deal for imaging because it exposes the entire picture/video taking pipeline to camera apps... that means someone can write a camera app with their own picture processing algorithms which in our case can definitely help us with the quality issue.
Meanwhile, we can enjoy better pictures thanks to OP's findings on the camera app's hidden settings. Anyway, if you read what I've bolded in the quoted comment from that official thread... What the hell, Motorola? I mean, he's probably meaning that the stuff that has to be changed is regarding the sensor itself (it presumably does in-sensor noise reduction, outside the scope of what the camera app does by itself) but when the camera app is doing useless noise reduction and you tell people that it can't be solved that way, then @GodOfPsychos finds out about the app's hidden settings being some simple on/off toggles for that useless noise reduction... just... what the hell. This defies logic.
I've made a user in the Motorola forum and have been posting all our findings in that thread. This can't go unnoticed there because their representatives are able to communicate with the camera team. All my posts so far, under the name JohnRambo:

Silence so far, and people are starting to get upset about the matter. You would be, if the representatives all along said that the camera was fine, and the required tweaks are beyond what they can do with the camera app.. yeah, you get the idea. People shouldn't have to root their phone to fix its camera. EDIT: well, there's the modded camera APK now which is just great! Everyone can now enjoy their moto G's camera as it should be.
They updated the Moto X 2013's software to improve its camera quality, we've proven they can do the same with the Moto G 2013...

I went back and marked my previous post as "best answer" to keep it a little more in sight. We're continuing to evaluate improvements, balancing how changes in one area might impact other aspects of the photos. As I wrote before, it will take a firmware update to implement some of the changes; not something we can do via a faster Play Store update.

Finally, an answer. So, no mention of the camera app doing this useless NR. Okay. Well, it seems we'll have to wait for the L update.
This actually made it to the XDA front page.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Added 28/09/14
Old camera app, before the update:
So, we have three settings to tweak, what do they do?
Wavelet NR is the offender, if you want to improve your pictures then disable that one.
Morpho VNR reduces color noise in the camera live view, I've been taking pictures with it on and off, and there's no difference in the final picture, nor in its file size. Its effect is especially noticeable in low light conditions, try it out. This one is up to you, if you prefer a cleaner live view.
QC Tintless affects color rendering, in particular the amount of red in the final picture. It is presumably the 4.4.4 fix for people who had too much red in their pictures in 4.4.2, so this one is up to you to tweak. Keep it enabled if you want more neutral colors, disabled if you want a little more red in your pictures out of the camera.
Just disable Wavelet NR. The other two are beneficial either to the live view's quality, or to the final picture through better color rendering.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Added 12/10/14
There has been an update to the camera app.
Wavelet NR is now QC denoise, still enabled by default. Do the right thing and disable it to improve picture quality.
Morpho VNR has been renamed to Morpho denoise and is no longer selectable. It doesn't affect you, don't mind this change. It is enabled by default and it should be, otherwise the viewfinder becomes a color noise mess under low light conditions, unlike the pictures taken with QC denoise off.
QC Tintless is unaffected. Keep it enabled.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Added 03/10/15
Go here for the latest camera app, with hidden settings enabled. Thanks @S0bes for all your hard work on this.
The camera app's hidden settings have changed a bit since the last update to this post, some other interesting settings have appeared (which I haven't tested by the way), but the recommendation that's been on this post for a year so far stays the same. Disable QC denoise, leave the rest as it is, enjoy!
As always your mileage may vary, the app can be installed on most Motorola phones so far (all of them?), and the improvements depend on how bad your phone's sensor is. The 1st gen Moto G has a particularly bad 5MP sensor that its output suffers too much by the noise removal done by the app. On phones with better cameras, well, you'll have to test for yourself to see if it's worth it.

i don't know either. im a noob at stuff like this. i just found this out at midnight after hours of looking for the cause, that made those settings visible (never thought it would be just an easy build.prop entry).
which file explorer did you use for editing the build.prop?
if it is root explorer, then it could be that the build.prop didn't really saved. in this case the easy solution for that is, before editing the build.prop file, press the "Mount R/W" button in the upper right corner. after that you can edit the build.prop and save it

Working fine on xt1032 4.4.4.:good:

make sure changes were saved then reboot and check again

Working fine here, I can tell these pictures have much more fine detail, but a little bit of noise in low light conditions.
For the people that is not working, I had the same problem, just change the line, save and delete the .bak of the build prop.

Please delete this post. (Sorry)

I still don't know what "Morpho VNR" and "QC Tintless" are.
btw. I recognized that the pre-installed motorola camera app is different to the motorola camera app installed through play store.
in the play store version are a few other options available like:
"Image Stabilization" (somehow unavailable on the pre-installed version), "Video Stabilization" (not greyed out like on pre-installed version),
"Dual Video Encode"(somehow unavailable on the pre-installed version), "Preview history" (not greyed out like on pre-installed version),
"HDR save EV0" (not greyed out like on pre-installed version), "Log AEC; AF; AWB" (not greyed out like on pre-installed version)
But the play store version is also missing some options that appear to be only available on pre-installed version like:
"Morpho VNR" (somehow unavailable in play store version), "QC Tintless" (somehow unavailable on play store version), "Video Size" (somehow unavailable on play store version),
"ALTM" (somehow unavailable in play store version), "Exposure compensation" (somehow unavailable in play store version), "White Balance" (somhow unavailable in play store version)
If someone has all these options available and not greyed out, i would really appreciate it, if you share your "MotCamera.apk" with us. i would attach it to the thread and of course give credit to you.
PS: sorry for my bad english.

Working FIne!!
xt1032 4.4.3

Thank you @GodOfPsychos
I will be grateful if someone tells me what is Morpho VNR and QC Tintless. And if it somehow improves the quality of photos, maybe also with Wavelet noise.
I can't test it because is night

[Rom Dump] N7000XXLSA (4.1.2) BUG POOL / REPORTS

Please be concise! Only bug reports of the pre-"official" Samsung XXLSA ROM Leak, or Samsung issued updates!.
I will add up (e.g. bug x #4 ) and list all bugs reported here. No one did so far, despite probably a disproportionate number of people using this ROM as opposed to non-Samsung baked ROMs.
High Mem Usage #5 (several reports on xda)
Camera Click is delayed ( very noticable when making shots with flash enabled)
Slow. AnTuTu reports a score of ca 8000 vs. 10.000 typical for Gingerbread
Disabling Energy Saving Mode, drops the AnTuTu score to ca 7000
When restarting movil during the activated (in the task bar) “Multi Window” option, the first time this option is not functional. Inactivate and Active! #1 (andres.gomez.pena)
normal Kies Air is not working (connecting) using XXLSA #3
Usb connection via MTP is buggy #1 (couldn't confirm Win7100)
homescreen speaks to you (TTS) sporadically #1 (the opening of voice commands may also be intentionally enabled through a tapping motion!)
Kernel is Speedlocked at 1000Mhz #1 (bloodyduke)
Cchoice for apps not always remembered. E.g. for launchers. #3
(1) Update:
The Kernel is configured as SMP Preempt. Priorization may differ in this build from previous Samsung ROMs.
It appears the slow down isn't due to rampant services at all, but the CPU mode being set to "on demand" by default and Speedlocked.

}
I apologize if my phrasing is a bit off - I am still in my early learning stages.
Battery life is great, as reported by many others!
(2) Update:
The Speedlock is due to the Battery Savings option, and actually not a bug, but working as it should.
It thus cannot explain why Antutu is even significantly slower when Battery Savings options are turned off.
(3) Update:
The OS occasionally closes or restarts applications in the background, which may entail additional CPU loads.
Be advised to turn off Multi-view from the notification bar, if not needed. Antutu went up 800 points from ~7200 to again 8000. Closing background, and halting monitoring apps - yielded me 8500 points in Antutu.
When I want to edit the preferences of the instant load in the Google+ app, it crashes.
After reset, picture frame widget is blank and you need to select the picture again.
After reset default programs ( for images, web links and whatever ) are forgotten and you need to select them again when you first open them.
Usb connection via MTP is buggy and does not show all the files in some directories.
Kies recognizes device but says firmware cannot be updated ( probably normal though because this is not official firmware )
Charging while using the phone is very slow
Confirming Google plus bug... I just uninstall that anyway...
Enabling an application in accessibility settings (e.g. NoLed or Llama) makes the homescreen speak to you (TTS) and the phone becomes incredibly laggy. Longer explanation here and another claim here.
Smart stay option in display does not work in lsa leaked . Problem is fixed in lsc leaked .

True. But I figured that the majority will toy with the leaked "official" ROM and either didn't or opted out of any OTA updates. The majority aren't testers but only install the official versions and might land here via google search. Yet as you said, it is a good idea to pool the more recent builds here as well to see if a potential bug is no longer reported.
To all: Please report XXLSB - XXLS? bugs here as well, along with the version you are using.
For instance this Rocketrom JB bake ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1953847 ) is reported with the bug: "Zooming issue with VideoCam on 1080p-mode".
I checked this in XXLSA, and got an error message "Zooming is not supported while Recording FULL HD video". Seems OK and logical. I figure a lot has been fixed or improved in the leaked JB.
I ponder if the sluggishness and high Mem consumption is due to most applications being baked as debug versions? Can anyone confirm this theory? Much can also be explained via ( https://www.google.com/search?client=opera&q=SMP+PREEMPT ) - the KERNEL configuration of the leaked bake.
For me XLSA worked pretty good until it stopped. When I was listening to music on Poweramp using BT headphones phone freezed. After reboot it stuck on black splash screen GT-N7000. Nothing was working - nor nandroid backup helped nor wiping or even flashing XLSC. Had to do wipes using Abyss Kernel 4.2 Red Pill. After that I could flash or recover system from backup. All was back to normal.
Bluetooth Headset doesn't beep after call ends
Here is another bug that I discovered.
When I am using my bluetooth headset, when the call ends I don't hear the BEEP in the headset that indicates that the call has ended.
In 4.04 when the call ended I would here a BEEP in my headset.

Someone wrote an app for that MyUpdate or UpdateMe, it was called. (If I would have the post, I would link it).
Others have gotten updates through the official channel - (Phone Status -> Update) e.g. in Singapore. You could try and VPN connect your phone to an Asian server/ISP.

1. Lags: Even with ultra clean instal. Removing some apps makes it better. But not that much.
2. Butter is more like lumpy grease. Same experience as compared to gb on gs2, now jb on note compared to nexus. Experience not on same smoothness level.
3. More black clipping then ever
4. Unstable, can sod permenantly.
5. Next to black clipping strange artifacts in screen. Rare issue
6. Regionalisation is more linked to simcard/network rather then csc or chosen countries. This makes it difficult to read disclaimers for the travelers amongst us. This for os, for samsung apps and for google play. Pretty silly move.
7. Apps dont remember their states ( e.g. browsers) This is inhibiting multitask experience. Apple can do this why not Android. Focus was on multitasking with release wasnt it?
8. Not all aps are aproachable through the multitasking bar
9. Ota changes check on root now
10. Messages in multitask mode from one app can block all others untill message is away
11. Spen becomes uncalibrated over time. Unforgivable for a spen phone
12. Nice toggles, brightness missing in stock version (60% sure of this)
13. Not as robust. A battery pull can make phone unbootable. Not foolproof.
14. Default choice for apps not always remembered. E.g. for launchers.
Rant rant, so on and so forth

I cannot confirm most of these. Performance issues, true. As for multitasking: The high memory consumption leads to forceful closure of apps. Apps must implement restoring routines. Never had any system crashes or artifacts ever - with pretty heavy testing.
If you have rooted the phone your bug reports aren't what others experience.
8. It was delivered and promoted as such. Probably for stability reasons. XDA users have broken that limitation (rooting required).
10- I checked this. Not the case. E.g. video player and gallery zooming. Depends on the application's routine to being put in the background.
11. Didn't experience that. The lack of calibration options bugs the hell out of me. Primitive y-offseting is provided through left /right handed settings. I found an app that allows Wacom digitizer calib. $$+ root. No way!
My mind was blown when I downloaded the Wacom Sketching app and experienced unparalleled Spen sensitivity.
13. Definitely not the case. I am usually too lazy to shut down.
14. Ack.

8 Would be nice if they showed an option to view all aps with a disclaimer, stability issues can arize. At own risk. If it cant harm the phone, why not .
10 we are using different apps. Probably different way of showing these prompts/status messages. So its not generically captured, my guess.

However this thread title is on rom dump, not the sammobile leaked rom(referred to as stock, which to my knowledge is not based on dump).

thanks for pointing this out. As I said, I did indeed not have any troubles with the pre-official XXLSA. Not even application crashes that I can remember, let alone system crashes - with heavy testing. Many initial bugs which turned out to be misinformation on my part.
My biggest gripes are high memory consumption, sluggishness - but I have no idea if this is normal. But there is certainly a strong argument why current phones have more RAM and more CPUs, GPUs.

Zenfone 2 Bloatware (not bad at all)

Guys i have being playing around with the phone for 3 or 4 days. My first impression as every one was WTF 4562398562389476 Bloatware apps installed. And i did remove all of them or disabled them. (im using original rom). I have also removed all the GAAPS, cleaner and all that stuff from the phone.
But it crossed from my mind why not to check ASSUS apps.
Splendid: This aps gives you full control of the display. You can enable blue light filter, vivid color mod, you can control hue and saturation, the temperature of the image also. its a very complete app and its not bad at all.

SystemUpdate: There is not much to say there but with one click you can receive the OTA updates. Quick and easy (and works lol).
Themes: it does what it is. you can apply in a easy way new themes. it gives you the option too, you can share your creation with ASUS and they may include yours into this.
Weather: As it says the name this is an app that shows the weather from were you are its very complete and its stylish. also has a good looking widget.
MiniMovie This app is for making videos "presentations" from photos that you have on your phone. you can add text music. is easy its not bad at all. i do not use this kind of apps but i may stat using it . also when you finish editing you can share to whats up, or upload into youtube, etc.
Music: This app is the music players it has nothing special it does what is expected not bad at all. also has an option that you can connect to cloud storages to listen your music.
MyAsus Its an app that let you connect to asus and open tickets to them ask questions etc. also you can access zen forum. there is not much interesting here more than you can open support tickets to them. i did open asking for update 5.1.1 and it took like 2 days to reply but they did. Also they send you news like the IFA event form today.
Pc link: This application lets you mirror the screen from the phone into your windows desktop. its not bad at all. there you can controll all your phone, also take snapshot, make videos , etc. its not bad at all.
Photo Collage: This apps let you make Collage with taken photos, or downloaded ones. its easy and quick not bad at all. lots of options. you can modify the colage how is made. add text effects colors etc. when you save you can share through watsapp or any app.
Power Saver: This app lets you configure may aspects of battery consumptions. also let syou set battery modes .
FlashLight: This app turns on your led to use it as a flashlight also you can turn on the display for more light. SOS message and some other thinks . this app is not very good it does drains your battery if you turn off the LED and you left the app opened. so close the app when you stop using it. There is not need all this options we only want turn on the led to use the celphone as a flashlight.
FM RADIO: I have not tested due i did not connected a head phone yet. but it should be good.
Kids Mode: I have not used it but its good one. you can configure the phone to have only some apps that kids can use.
Asus Mobile Manager: I have mixed feelins with this app. it does make some short cuts to the ui or other apps. but what can you do there is. you can configure not to start apps when the celphone boots. also you can make applications not to send notifications. You can clean the memory from apps loaded. And go to the Battery saver app.
Audio Wizard Basically you can select music modes presets
Auto Start Manager: This app is shown inside Asus Mobile Manager. it lets you block apps to start when the celphone boots.
Camera: This is the camera app there are lots of review. it has tons of options its very good.
Asus Cover: This app lets you configure the Flip cover when its installed on the phone. i dont have one so there its not much to do here.
Email: Im very happy with this app i have connected to Outlook server and it works grate it has tons of options very complete. Probably it is not the best but its ok for most users.
Calendar: tis a calendar its very good also. i have synchronized to outlook sever works perfect tons of options to configure.
Regarding the ASUS IU. its great its fluid and you can tweak all aspects from the interface. you can modify fonts, effects, colors etc. it may be not as complet as nova or similar launchers. but for most of us the job is well done.
There are some others apps that i still have disabled. like:
Mirror:(its enable the front camera (selfie))
Remote link: allows you control your pc from the cellphone. (this is not bad at all if you need it)
Party link: i think it was like an app to share contact in a party but the other person should have the app installed also. The idea is not bad but too complicated to send a contact.
ShareLink: Dont remeber waht was this.
SuperNote: An app to do notes. im using other so i don´t have any opinion on this. But should not be bad at all.
WhatsNext: its like shows you what you have to do next in your calendar. its like a shot cut to your schedule.
ZenCircle and ZenTalk don´know like something "SOCIAL"
Giving a thought what i can say of ASUS apps. they are not bad at all i was expecting very bad apps. and they are being updated so it may be good to give them a try. they are balanced for productivity and leasure. they are quick and elegant. what i can say thumbs up for almost all of them
i cant deny they are A LOT.
Most of the bloatware can be disabled now. On previous versions of the firmware, this could not be achieved without rooting. That being said, its hard to deny that a select few of the Asus apps are actually quite useful and designed well for use.

i was not aware. good to know they are making things better. we need to wait 5.1.1 update to have better battery performance.
There is not even an iota of doubt that they are making things better but they should have released 5.1 now. its getting late every single day
PhotoCollage and Minimovie and flashlight are excellent aps. The others i don't use.
Let 5.1 come first and then you'll get real performance cause 5.0 supports only 32 bit unlike 5.1, it supports 64 bit too and memory bug leak is mind **** on 5.0
I actually like Splendid. Wish I could download it for my other devices such as my shield tablet.

yes I've latest firmware with WW version, I'm having one problem more. Does 2g work on second sim?
Well, agree that some of them are good - I like Splendid and Picture Collage, the camera app is good, and the PC Link suite are good. But the calendar is basically the same as Google one but much uglier. Mail app I prefered the ASUS one to Gmail, but why both preinstalled? Waste of space - shouldn't bother with Gmail one, those who want it can get from playstore. The Supernote app is awful - the finger writing function is just plain useless. Party Link is pointless. The torch app is OTT - a simple quick settings toggle would suffice. Live water - waste of space. Browser - why? It has Chrome, surely most people use that? I suppose some of the apps that duplicate Google app functions are needed for the CN sku, but we don't need them on WW models. I could go on, but I won't. Basically, I just wish they had put in only the core apps and then an ASUS Apps Hub app that introduces extra apps you could choose to get from the playstore according to your need.

Lowering Camera Resolution

Hi!
Personally, I find 21 MP to be a bit excessive in terms of how much space pictures take up, so I'm wondering how I should downscale my pictures from this phone.
1. Lowering the resolution inside the camera app.
2. Get another app to shrink my pictures after I take them.
My concern is that if I set a lower resolution inside the camera app, I will only be using a portion of the pixels on the sensor or the app might use a really fast compression algorithm that produces low quality output. Does anyone know what really happens when you don't select the highest resolution inside the camera app?
Thanks in advance!)
I shoot in 16x9 which lowers resolution to ~16 mp

If you're rooted then I can help you, if not then I can't.
If you are rooted you can enable developer options within the moto camera app (not to be confused with developer options within the phone settings).
There are a few ways to do it but the way I used was the xposed module "moto checkbox".
If you use it just go to camera options and enable development settings (it says something like that). Be sure to go to statusbar options and check " use AOSP icons" too, else it'll replace your data indicator icons.
Don't touch anything else within the module because it wasn't made for our phone. It sounds like a lot but it really isn't.
I think you can download a modified moto camera somewhere but this was the easiest way for me since I use xposed anyways. If you can find a modded apk then you won't need root I don't think.
Anyways, once you get it working there'll be a little ladybug looking button when you swipe out the settings wheel in the camera. Click it. From there you have access to lots of settings. You can change resolution like you want and it doesn't use crappy compression. You can do this for video too, and the camera preview itself, and much more. Here's some screenshots. Have fun :good:

P8 camera metering mode question

I downloaded the p8 user manual, but can't find anything about camera metering modes like matrix/center/spot metering.
Owners of P8 units... Does this camera have the option to select metering modes? Thanks a lot!
If you open the camera app > access the hamburger menu (≡ at top right) > select Professional - you get various finer settings to adjust. This may be what you're referring to.
Would also be worth trying a few third-party camera apps, some of which offer readily available manual options (not hidden deep within various menus), & more features & improvements over the stock android camera app. Not sure what links I'm allowed/not allowed to post, so just do a Google search for 'best android camera apps' (or similar). If you find any really good/useful ones, do let us know if you can.

Thanks for your reply. Can you please tell me which settings are available in the Professional mode? I am specifically looking for the Matrix/Center/Spot-metering functions, so you have better control on how the camera "sees" the light.
I know that the FV-5 camera app has Matrix/Center/Spot-metering modes. But are these only available when the P8 hardware supports this?
Right, I'm with you now. It looks like it does support metering functions (No way to check for quality though, is there? Or, do you know how?)
I made a screenshot (see below) of the various 'pro' functions in the P8's default camera app, & also of the installed FV-5 app's metering options.
Let me know if you need any more info/screenshots.

Thanks for your detailed info, very nice of you.
Yes it seems it does have light metering options. The strange thing is, in the meantime i emailed to Huawei directly and they said it didn't have the modes...
And is your device non-rooted? How do you like your pics from the P8. People in reviews complained about inconsistency of the picture quality. Do you recognize that?
No problem (got some time on my hands). Wow, it seems Huawei support are rubbish with such things!
Yes, my device is non-rooted (so far!). Pics are best I've ever had on a phone (although my older phones' cameras were ordinary). No, I don't find any inconsistency with quality, although some patience & a steady hand helps a great deal (I'm sure a tripod would be even better).
As photos are so important to you & if the P8's camera seems ordinary to you (from what you've heard/read so far), you should perhaps consider a Huawei P9/P9 Plus, or another brand/model especially known for its excellent camera.
Anyway, have a look at a few independent reviews of the P8 camera before making up your mind:
Notebookcheck (very detailed, camera review begins from about a third down the page)
ePhotozine (photography website, so hopefully know what they're talking about)
The Huawei P8 camera - my experiences so far (Smartcam Club) (a phone-camera enthusiast site by the looks of it)
Edit: Full res shots from 3rd review above available at Flickr - very impressive, obviously taken by someone who knows what they are doing!

Thanks for the reviews and photos, i will take a close look at that. I'm still using my "old" Galaxy S2. The problem is my battery dies 2 times in a day. And there are no original batteries available anymore, only bad copies. I bought 3 and all of them are bad. I still use my first original battery now. I always liked the S2 camera, not too bad... And as photography is my hobby i always had a way to make a "basic" photo better.
But now we are almost 4 years later, the camera's have certainly improved. I was choosing between the Moto G4 plus, Samsung S5 neo, LG G4 and Huawei P8. All are in my budget range from 300 euro's.
The LG G4 suffers from a bad bootloop problem, so that one is a no go for me. The Huawei P8 had most options and now i know it has also manual metering options, it will be my main choice.
How's the battery time of the P8? If you use the phone often, will it last a day? And my last question, if you turn of the phone, and then on again, will it remember the camera settings? For example EV compensation, white balance and so?
Thanks again for answering.
Yesterday i went to a Vodafone shop to see the P8. The strange thing was, when i went into the camera-settings, i didn't see the professional mode, like you send me in the picture. Or did that change through a software update?
Ok, I understand well where you're coming from now. You want a good-excellent camera with metering/finer functions, but also on a budget. And a phone with reasonably good battery life.
The P8 camera's 'pro' setting appears to work for a set time - if the camera is not accessed or used for 15 min, it automatically returns to its default setting. Just accessing the camera app keeps it going for 15 mins further - one doesn't have to take a shot to keep it going. Completely closing the camera app, or restarting/switching on the phone afresh (from off) doesn't seem to have any effect - the pro setting remains unchanged - so here again, time seems to be the only factor. In other words, if the pro setting is enabled, then the phone switched-off for longer than 15 min, the camera will automatically revert to its default setting. I haven't found a way to lock the setting, although a third-party camera app may have this feature.
About the absence of the pro setting in the phone you looked at, did you check what Android version the phone was running on? If older than Marshmallow, it most likely won't be there - see this video. So, hopefully this is the only reason for its absence in the shop's phone.
If the phone is kept constantly on as normal, only average/medium use gives me a full day's battery. Once setup, there's an easily accessible, inbuilt 'Ultra battery' setting which I use when the phone is not going to be being used for a while. This extends battery life quite well, & allows in/out calls & texts. This setting is also very easy to exit whenever needed, & reverts the phone back to normal mode (full functionality) in a few seconds.
On the downside, the phone doesn't support fast-charging, so even using a fast-charger (FC) makes no difference (got this info from reviews, so quickly changed my mind about getting a FC). Charging the P8 for an hour equates to 30-35% of added battery power. By contrast, a FC used with a compatible FC-phone, can usually add ~60% battery power in an hour.

Thanks again for your kind and detailed explanation. Great that you tried the options yourself.
About the version of Android i tried in the shop... I have no idea. How can you see what version of Android is installed?
But if an old version is installed, will it have the camera pro-mode if i upgrade to the 6.0 Android with 4.0 Emui? (See link: http://huafirmware.com/huawei-p8)
Was your device standard with the camera-pro mode installed when you bought it?
You can check which Android is installed in Settings > About phone > Android version.
Also make a note of the 'Build number' in the above screen - it'll be something like GRA-L09C432B200. From this we can usually determine which Marshmallow (Mm) build number you can directly update to if you choose to manually update (more about this when the time comes).
The camera was so much better than any phone I'd ever owned that I didn't bother to look for finer adjustments initially. Also, I updated to Mm almost immediately after getting the phone. But even then, I'm almost certain the pro settings only appeared after the Mm update. So yes, once you update to Mm, they'll be there.
Hello, i went to the shop again today. I played around with the camera again and looked up the serial codes of the phone. I took a picture of it.
Huawei GRA-L09
GRA-L09V100R001C652B120
I am so looking forward to this camera. Hope you can help me out with an optional update when i receive the phone.
That's good to hear. Did you forget to check the Android version? No problem as B120 (last 4 characters of build number) is definitely Lollipop.
B120 cannot be manually updated to the latest Mm firmware (probably B370), so before a manual update, it's recommended to check for an OTA one from within the phone itself at the following locations whilst connected to the internet (use your Wi-Fi connection, not data, as sometimes these downloads can be quite large):
Settings > Update > Check for updates
HiCare app > Me tab > Check for updates
HiCare app > Service tab > OS Upgrade Early Adopters
Click here if you need to download & install the Huawei HiCare app.
Thanks again. I checked the Android version, it's 5.0. I will probably order the P8 next week. I will try to update it through the unit itself. I have no wifi myself, so i will go to a public place to update it. After that inititial update, is it possible to update automatically to 6.0 or do you have to manually update it?
The initial OTA update may be to Mm (6.0) directly, but most likely not the latest build (B370).
Hey Hawker17, how are things going? Did you buy the phone? Update went ok? Camera working well?
Anyway, just came across this xda-thread today which I thought you may be interested in to showcase your clicking abilities: [PHOTO] Show your best P8 shots

Hi Hawker17, good to hear from you again.
That's one strange build number, but you're not alone: Update on Android 6 Build Nr B222
The op didn't return to say if he was able to solve it or not with the downgrade to B200 suggestion offered.
If he returns to say it has worked, do not follow the suggestion to update to B380 mentioned there as it was not official. Instead from B200, update to B370 next & then finally to B382.
----------------------
Btw, some time later I found what could be the camera's possible 'difference in quality' that some others have been talking about when updating from Lollipop to Mm. I had to downgrade to Lollipop B200 temporarily once (when an update went wrong) & was able to record the following differences:

Thanks for your reply. I immediately registered at the German site to ask him personally. I hope to hear from him and will post the answers here.
I also emailed Huawei Netherlands, why i couldn't update from B222 to 370. He said there are simply no updates available... but i know there are updates to B370 and like you said even 380/382.

That's not right, as both B370 & 382 are available - also both should come through via std OTA: Settings > Update.
If B370, doesn't come through, in say 10 days (& if you can wait that long), then it's easily manually updateable via the 'full B370 update' link I provided above.
It's recommended to further wait for B382 via OTA only, as forum posters have been providing only the OTA part of the update so far & not the full update (as they did for the B370), which is required for proper flashing.
B380 is the one that was not officially released (leaked really), which I've already mentioned not to install in my previous post.

Better camera app

I have been on vacation for the past 10 days mostly. Using my wife's iPhone for pics, which has made me realize how bad the OP 6t native camera app is. Two pain points in particular:
1) Two finger zoom is extremely choppy, jumping in increments that make it difficult to compose well
2) Pano stitching misses at least 30% of the time, often grossly so, and often in good light
3) No voice triggers for the camera. Maybe I need to observe proper technique from Asian ladies but I find it near impossible to compose and trigger the shutter when doing a selfie with the missus with an outstretched hand. I used to have a LG many moons ago they you could configure to respond to "cheese" and "kimchi".
Any suggestions? I understand that third party apps loose access to the detailed hardware drivers, filtering and demosaic algorithms, but it is not like OP does a particularly good job at that too (colors are too saturated and the overall rendition is often quite dark).

Try Open Camera
Try out gcam. Stock cam is garbage. Videos are fine tho.
It's another world with gcam.

Wow, just what the doctor ordered. Can't quite figure out if it does panos but that is probably because of the gazillion settings I have to go through. I also can't get the 6t to launch it by default with a power button double tap. Still goes for the stock app despite me setting open cam as the default camera app. Maybe I need to reboot.

I have tried gcam in the past but it always seemed buggy. Can you point me to a decent implementation for the 6t?

Try this Jean Luc mod apk with your favorite config file. There are also picture samples for each config. I prefer velvia.
Put the xml file in /gcam/configs. Install and open the camera apk and double tap the area next to the shutter button. You can load the config then.

Double tap power button to open a custom camera is only possible when phone is unlocked already. OOS feature...
Sorry for being dumb but... I created /gcam/configs, put a couple of XML files in there, installed the app, launched it, but when I double tap I get "you do not have any configs files".
Does gcam need to be under sdcard or in the root?
Never mind, figured it out, gcam needs to be in sdcard.
As to configuring a custom camera app to launch with double clicking the power button - I am on OOS unlocked. Do I need to install a button remapper?

Thanks but it is not case sensitive, I have it all lower case and it works fine.
I use a combination of Camera FV-5, when I have time to set everything because I'm picky (also 40 years using film SLR and D-SLR's) and when I'm in a hurry, the google camera that was ported for the Pixel phone I had. It's faster than the Camera FV-5.
The native camera app, as you mention, SUCKS.

I tried that camera and when I zoomed in on the pictures, I still got the same mess as on previous camera versions.
If you really want to find the best camera setup for your phone and your photo habits, join google camera [op6/6t] group on telegram, I am on the latest 6.1 (6.2 sort of buggy) experimenting with glib, xlib xmls, but the possibilities are endless and there are noob-level tutorials how to set it up and which xml is for what.
