Always assume that any OTA or official update will break root and there is some risk that an update will actually brick your phone.
You should also assume that any OTA or official updates will prevent any known root methods from working in the future.
In short, if you are rooted don't take an OTA and if you think you want to root in the future still don't take an OTA.
One of the first things I do when I root a device is disable the OTA update mechanism so I'll never even see the notification.

Yes, the the new firmware update did break my root. I used towelroot. I have a galaxy tab 4 10.1 sm-t530nu.

Can you guys tell me whats the changelog? I dont want to lose root, but its worth it if its a major update.

I updated my SM-T335 today. Changelog just said "Stability improvement"

I just bought this tablet today....didn't even think about the update...now I have to wait to root.

Not necessarily.
Im working on reverting my 10.1 to the prior firmware version. I just need to confirm that this is the appropriate firmware
PDA: T530NUUEU1AND4

OK, I used odin and restored the previous firmware. Ran towelroot again, and all is back to the way it was before the mistake in software update.
I was able to freeze LocalFOTA.apk but these were not there to freeze:
Kies.apk
SyncmIDM.apk
SyncmIDS.apk

290 OTA available!

Hi guys, just thought I would inform you that the 290 OTA is out in the USA. I have a c6903 that was imported here, SO I do not know if the phone has a location set or if its just going by my carriers connectivity, which is StraightTalk.
Should I update OTA and see if it preserves root?
You can't do OTA if rooted. Sony has taken care of that. OTA will fail if you try.

I guess I should read the forums a bit better. Yes, the update did fail.
I thought sony sort of "encouraged" rooting.
Anyways, I wasted space on the forum.. =(

Strange beause it worked for me. I have C6903 unbranded (Romania).
I flashed 534, rooted, OTA-updated to 257 (root was kept)
Today I received the notification that an update to 290 is available.
So I successfully updated to 290 via OTA. Root is lost though

I did OTA update and root is survived but partial root only. System files are write protected. If you want fully working root, you need to unlock the bootloader (at least for now).
I removed root and couldn't update OTA. Had to resort to the pc companion. I hope this helps in the development of a solution to get a 4.3 OTA root.
We have to detect which firmware could handle OTA update with root.
Same thing happened on some 257 firmware but...
Sony fixed exploit space that devs used to root and even if you find firmware (like @ktxed) that can be updated on rooted devices - you'll have only partial root.
And that means - you'll be able to flash everything through recovery but as soon as OS boot - you can't write to system anymore.

I noticed partial root stops working after a while.I flashed custom rom on Lb.

How to disable automatic updates on Note 10.1?

I just bought a Note 10.1 2014 tablet. It's on Android 4.3, I have rooted it with Odin. I would like to disable the auto update to prevent it from updating to Kitkat. I have freezed FWUpgrade 1.2.0 with Titanium Backup. Is that enough? Or do I need to freeze/rename some other files? Thanks.
Just curious why you don't want the update? I have a p600 wi fi only and I have to say I've got much better performance after the update. That said my note 3 was awful after the update

I have my phone (Samsung Note 3) getting automatically updated overnight even though it's rooted (thankfully that was still on 4.3). Can anyone confirm that for the Note 10.1 once it's rooted I will not get any more OTA updates? Thanks.
I'm using galaya note 2 kitkat original and rooted. I tried ota update and an error message appeared and said unable to update my phone because it is modified

I believe with root, you still received the OTA update, but it will failed when you try to run the update.
Ok cool. As long as it can't successfully update through OTA. I have everything I need to use on 4.3, unless there's an app that requries 4.4 or higher, I don't want to update.

First, plug phone into computer, and install updater software from the phone that is on the device in 'Installer Mode'. Take the download on the PC, then follow directions below, and you can still have root after.

Hi again,
I installed the upgrade assistant in installer mode but for some reason it is not picking up the new NE9 update on my computer. See attached print screen. Very strange.. It sees the update on my phone to download though.:cyclops: Do you know why this is and how I can get it to see the update on the upgrade assistant as you mentioned?
Kind Regards
Can you explain why you want the update so bad? You do realize that rooting and accepting official otas is completely contradictory, correct? OTAs are generally what fix things like what towelroot exploits. If you accept official OTA, you will likely lose root.
But can't I just re root after the ota? I guess the reason I want the Ota because I heard of camera enhancements and stability fixes

No. OTA have patches for known security flaws as well. The flaw that towelroot relies on is closed after the new OTA. Meaning, no more root.
edit: in this case I believe folks have figured out a work around for keeping root with the update. In general though, if you value root and what it provides you do not accept official releases.

@ks3rv3rg I believe the links mentioned above provide a workaround for the Root to be kept after updating.
As for the problem nick, I can't help you there. I haven't personally take it as I see taking OTA's is silly with a rooted phone you can modify to be much more. Perhaps someone else who has done it will chime in...
Thank you both for your perspectives.. Plus, I can always just wait for a ROM that currently has the update installed.

Thank you both for educating me on this. Ill try the work around to try to keep the root and update. I just wish I could get the Verizon update assistant to download the NE9. Either way Ill just wait for a ROM with the new OTA.

I think you are referring to my safestrap flashable OTA zip file. I'm going to keep that one in my back pocket for the next OTA since the kernel swap worked.
I'm happy to say I installed this rom and the firmware and it rocks!! Thank you .plus I got my download booster and my overclock settings!!

I have a similar question but reversed. How do I stop it from updating and it from asking me to update? I have the free version of titanium backup and can't freeze it. Is their another way? I can't turn off SDM that runs the ota upgrade i can only force stop it.

you will be fine.. OTA's do not delete your apps/data, etc..occaisionally you may have a few things start to act wonky depending on what the ota installed over top..but your main concern..you're ok.. and as the other poster said..you may get more bloat added
Thanks guys...

Rooted but received ota update??

Hi guys i have g900f in the UK and i am on KK 4.4.2 Rooted with stock rom. Today i received a software update message, i went to software update and its showing me a update package of 194mb and its giving me the option to download it however i am rooted with towel root and knox 0x0.
Any ideas of this update? If i do it, would it wipe away my root? I have left a screen shot below. Thanks

In all probability it will update the device to Lollipop. .....and that WILL remove your root access.
The only thing that is preventing me from being certain of the fact is the size of the download....194 Mb is very small considering a full LP firmware is somewhere in the region of 1.36 Gb.....
Do you have a reason for staying on KK or is it just that you haven't had an opportunity to upgrade to LP before today?

There is no Lollipop within Europe, until beginning of May.
Any phones it should have all latest security patches at any cost.

I like Kitkat as you can root it with Towel and have Knox 0x0. My warranty expires in August, so i am generally waiting for the official Marshmallow update, then i will upgrade the software to it.
Its werid how i got that update notification, because i restarted my phone earlier and checked again for updates, and it told me my device is modified and cannot update now. Maybe it was a glitch, but i am certainly not updating it to lollipop

Yes if you have root access every one remotely has root access to your own phone too.
This is not a perfect world.

While I am just a industrial electrician playing with motors , cables, and electronics, even so I am also aware of what is: Remote hijacking of a Smartphone.
Samsung security patches and lollipop (By Samsung) both are additional added shields against all sort of hijacking, due apps, remote access or direct unauthorized access.
