Windows 8.1 in low specifications pcs - Windows 8 General

My PC of the work is a netbook. It always frustrating me about the speed. I want to know what is better for it. Elementary OS luna, windows 8.1 or Windows 7.
With windows 8.1 and windows 7 I haven't a good experience about the speed. Still very slow for me. I read elementary OS is for a low requisites PC, so can it be my solution? I will try to make a partition with Windows and Elementary OS if you recommend me it to use some utilities of windows and other things like causal things in Luna.
Specifications:
1.66 GHz Intel Atom
1 GB RAM
200 GB Hard Disk (aprox)
A resolution under 1366x768, 1240x768 is the resolution.
Intel Mobile Graphics
More info: Acer Aspire One D260
Can you help me?
Thanks!!!

Windows 8 64 bits very slow to install by DVD

Hi, I'm trying to install Windows 8 64 bits Consumer Preview by DVD driver in my PC, but, it's very, VERY slow to install. I wait 1 hour to select the language. Why is happening this? For install my Windows 7 32 bits Ultimate was the same. Is my HD or DVD Driver? (I burn 2x in the DVD by Power ISO)
Thanks.

That software you mentioned should have died out years ago , but didn't. They propped up sales by seeding torrents that blahblahblah.... rant off.
Anyway, try a md5sum on the images and dvds.
I installed on a vm in less than 15minutes, and even with the annoying reboots it was fairly quick.
Check you bios for odd settings.
Are your floppy disk controller enabled in the bios? Since Windows Vista some Mainboards have problems with setup if the floppy controller is enabled! deactivate it and setup should run at normal speed!
Windows 8 is a big file on its own, if you're trying to install the 64 buy version its even bigger. Be patient or try the 32 bit version

It could also be that your drivers are out of date or that your computer has a slow disc speed

given that you said you had issues on another OS then its likely to be a hardware issue.
first suggestion is to make sure your using 32 bit DMA access in your BIOS, its quite easy to set that to UDMA 0 or even PIO mode by mistake, its also possible the drive or disks your burning from / to might not be as accurate as they should be, its also worth checking your download isn't corrupted, I had that issue on the DP but that failed to install rather than just being slow.
If your using older drives using parallel cables, make sure they are on different channels, ie not connected to the same cable (master slave)
you could try setting up a USB drive install, that would rule out the media drive altogether and limit it to your moby or HDD
Thanks guys, I will format my HD and try again in some days o/
how is your raid set up? Make sure you have ahci , I loaded 64 bit last night , took less than 10 minutes and I had a corrupted drive to begin with (that took me an extra 10 minutes by itself) but install of the OS was the fastest Ive ever had on a windows machine !
Slow DVD install
It sounds like you have a low transfer speed or a low read speed on the DVD drive. Because it took me just over an hour to install Windows 8 CP on HP ZD7249CL. it took about 15 minutes to install on my Home Built desktop (AMD Phenom X4 840 3.2Ghz, 8 GB of ram, SATA III, AMD HD5770). See if you can upgrade to a sata drive if possible.
My older DVD drive is SATA, the new one(from my old PC) is IDE, and the both took the same time.
I will try to make some changes in the BIOS and reinstall the OS.
So I post the results.
Thanks all of you o/
I'm curious....
Does windows allow imaging/installing from disk images for non corporate users ?
On my mac I image disks, and install whatever is needed from the images. Its magnitudes faster than waiting on cd/dvd read times.
Maybe someone here is familiar with how its done on windows ?
Windows has some of the most efficient installation methods of any OS, you can essentially build whatever you like and have a completed automated / unattended install

Can I dualboot Windows 8 and Android on Surface?

The title says it all. When Microsoft's Surface drops will I be able to dual boot Windows 8 Pro and some version of Android?

No. Microsoft will enable secure boot on the Surface and restrict it so that no non-Microsoft OS can boot on it. This is true for all Windows RT devices. If you want a dual-booting tablet, you need a x86 one, but those cannot run Android very well.
I know the RT's gonna be a pain, but i was asking Surface Pro with intel chip. Or any Win 8 Pro tablet actually.

I don't see any reason why not as you can dual boot windows 8 pro with any other os its just RT. That said I cant confirm 2 things first that they wont lock the device itself (there is nothing in windows but they could lock the bios etc) and 2nd is finding an x86 version of Android that will run that's not just 2.2 (though I suspect it will take about a day to get it working)

Yeah Microsoft will probably lock the Surface like Motorola locks everything. Also, for x86 android, see http://www.android-x86.org/

How is hyper-v working? I got winxp and ubuntu installed on mine but then I noticed that my cpu would not get off max frequency (on a quad core intel laptop with turbo boost that is VERY bad). I googled the problem and it turns out hyper-v keeps the cpu at max as long as it is installed. Apparently it is just a bug, as it works fine in server 2012. I had to uninstall it until MS releases the fix.

I have no issues with cpu etc running on amd fx 8100 i was running xp but now running windows 7 (32 bit, for exchange 2003 support and VMware while we wait on veeam 6.5) and Ubuntu. I have found quite expectedly that it has an affect on boot times but processor core sit mostly idle - i have assigned 6 cores and they sit almost idle. I still pref VMware overall for main virtual network but for a simple vm on your local machine i have had no issues with hyper v so lets ho;e they get a fix for intel.

Wait for Friday when it is officially released.
Or, if you have MSDN (including MSDNAA) access, or a TechNet subscription, you can pick up the RTM build now. It may also be available on Dreamspark (if you're a student); I don't know.
Updating from an old OS version is the same as it's always been; run the installer from within the OS that you have now. For a clean install, reboot and run the installer from the boot menu (boot off DVD or USB or network). If you want to really clean your system before installing, format the drive first (may be a problem if you only bought an upgrade license).
A 2011 PC will run Win8 just fine. I'm typing this from a 2008 convertible tablet with a 1.2 GHz ultra-low voltage Core 2 Duo CPU, 4GB of RAM (upgraded from 1GB), 80GB hard disk (not even SSD; 1.8" 4200RPM spinning disk), and 1280x800 resolution display (with stylus digitizer but no touchscreen). Yeah, it was a $1500 piece of hardware when new, but it's also about as underpowered as any non-netbook from that year can get, and it runs Win8 Pro, 64-bit, RTM build 9200 just great! Even a low-end netbook from 2011 should have comparable specs, and any normal PC will blow it away. The hardware requirements for Win8 are lower than they were for Win7.

Just purchased shift need advice

Hey guys, not sure if there are many people here but I'm looking for some help. I recently bought a shift off ebay because I like the cool sliding form-factor and collecting old palm tops in general. When I got it it had vista on it. It also had a lot of garbage and porn on it from the previous seller who claimed it was mint... that's another story. I ran into some problems with it and tried to reinstall vista. Then I decided to throw windows 10 on it instead thinking it would make it run better.
Unfortunately windows 10 has slowed it down to a crawl. I can't get anything done on it. It's using up a lot of processing power to the point that the device gets hot and abruptly shuts down. I don't know what I was expecting really, it only has an 800mhz proc. Have any of you guys gotten 10 to run smoothly? I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.
Hi,
There are a number of Windows 10 performance tips in the thread titled "[GUIDE] Installing Windows 10 Technical Preview on the HTC Shift, especially in the final couple of pages.
I'm running Windows 10 on my Shift, and despite my best efforts, it still runs very slow, but good enough for running efficient applications such as Evernote, OneDrive and Word.
My Shift gets hot but it has never suffered from overheating. Perhaps your fan is faulty. Can you hear the fan running?
Hi guys, i was always fanatic for ultra mobile pc´s, i had some vaio P, and now i bought a HTC shift, just spent 50 euros in it, so it is a bargain
I have some questions here:
1- guy who sold me told me that wifi don´t work in windows 8 ( os installed), it needs some driver to work in windows 8/10? or it´s not possible to enable wifi?
2- when i receive the shift should i format all partions and make a new install of win 10? the owner told me that hd is 60gb and have 2 partitions
3- so for what i understand, there is the windows mode and then the windows mobile mode? they are installed in diferent partitions? how does this work?
thank you
i made a clean install of win 10, win 10 is very slow for shift.... all was working less wifi, it wasn´t detecting my home network
made a clean install of win 7 home premium, all smooth and quick, fast boot time, all things are working including touchscreen and wifi
in windows 7 i cant acess 3g dont know why
another problem is that when i press windows mobile key, i only get a black screen, what is the problem?
thank you
ps. for browsing i recimend slim jet browser, really fast and smoother, and very good to use with finger
I take it by now that you have learned that only the windows side uses the HDD (and bluetooth and the SD card). The Windows Mobile side is not connected to any of these (although it is connect to Windows and so can potentially access them if Windows is running).
If 3G is not working in Windows 7, have you run the "Shift Control Centre" to ensure that "Modem" is ON?
When I installed Windows 10 on my HTC Shift from a bootable USB drive created with the "Windows Media Creator" application, I performed a new installation after first deleting all of the partitions on the hard drive. This included the factory default Vista recovery partition, which I will never need, and I'd rather have the extra Gbs of storage.
There was a 2GB RAM module you could buy for it. Also, could you put an SSD inside it to speed it up?

You can buy a 2gb module in eBay but they are very expensive
About SSD you can use it, dont know wich modelo, but its possible, but this laptop have slow processor and bad graphic, so, i dont recomend this investment at all
I've got two Shifts. One with liberated Snapvue, 2GB Ram and 128GB SSD.
Had Windows7 installed, but then tried Win10. The first Beta versions made shift run like a charm, but with each update it became slower. I then returned to Vista with AeroDesign and 3d gimmicks disabled. Now runs pretty good, fast enough and stable.
The second Shift also runs Vista. Unfortunately i'm not able to liberate its Mobile side, as it refuses to receive emails although 3G is working fine. Strange thing: though not liberated, Vista is able to use the 3G modem.
windows 7 runs ok in shift, for me it´s the best os
Running Windows 10 on my Shift. I disabled certain things such as background apps, superfetch, and Windows search.
I wonder how much impact the future Meltdown and Spectre mitigation updates will have on my poor stock HTC Shift...
Wow! Started reading this thread and I cant believe I fired up my Shift. Running Windows 8 on it. It took 30 minutes for Windows defender to update . Updating Windows now. ANyone know where I can find an inexpensive battery?
Thanks
try ebay
search for htc x9500 or htc shift
btw
win 7 is the best os for this machine
Battery
Search htc shift in ebay and some will appear. Not cheap cicra £20-30 but probably not a deal breaker either.
I have used kingspec 1.8 inch 128 gb ssd's in other devices and they work well. Their speed depends upon the interface required, if ide then this will be the bottleneck. As for the original hdd they are one of the slowest ever made and were redesigned for media player usage!
Slow down windows 10 on a 1 CPU 800mHz 1gb or 2gb?
Answer this question first!!!

how to install PC XP Tablet Edition onto fire 10 HD

hello I have an .iso of windows xp tablet edition from 2005, how can I put this disk image onto the tablet to turn it into an PC? This is hypothetically work since it is an operating system meant for tablets I think. pls let me know if you come across anything thanks!
You can't. The most you could do is maybe run it in a virtual machine, but there is no version of Windows that'll natively run on these tablets (as of yet), especially not one that's nearly 20 years old that doesn't support any of the modern Android hardware platforms.
