Pentile screen or not? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know if it's pentile or not?

Nope that was only for the Note 2 it uses that diamond type of pixels exactly the same screen as the S5

Not quite sure what you're trying to say, are you saying that it was only the Note 2 that used a pentile display?
As far as I know, ALL of the Note phones have a pentile display of one form or another. Samsung have varied the shape/sizes of the pixels, but they're all pentile.
The only flagship that Samsung has made with an RGB striple AMOLED was the Galaxy S2 (I think).

The Note 2 had a pentile matrix but it was RGB. The Note 4 will have the same pentile matrix as the S5.

Thats what i expect it to be.
Has anyone heard anything about the brightness and 'quality' of the screen?
(G3 has a big resolution, but contrast, viewing angles and blacks are meh.)

In the videos it seems to be brighter than the Note 3.
And I had the Galaxy s5 prime with a Quad HD screen and it was fantastic, it had a bit better colors than my Note 3. Indeed in some points it was better than the normal Galaxy S5 which has one of the best screens in mobile market.

What if its pentile.... Would anyone notice it at over 500 ppi? Come on now. The S5 has one I'd the best displays ever in terms of everything and it is pentile.

RGB is not PenTile!! PenTile means that there are different pixels like red-green and blue-green, so for a white color we need 2 or more of these pixels. RGB allows every color in every pixel, because every pixel are the same and consists of all 3 needed colors (red, green, blue).

That's pentile, not RGB.
Pentile is an arrangement where each main pixel shares one or more sub-pixels, in this case the blue sub-pixel I believe.

No. It's an RGB layout called S-Stripe. The only difference is that the subpixels are differently aligned. Each pixel has its own 3 subpixels.

Seriously.. Can't believe that we still get these posts.

So Note II is still the only Note that is not PenTile?

The S2 i had for a long time also had an RGB matrix. Pentile / diamond don't have to be bad. At over 500 ppi really shouldn't matter anymore.
Hope its at least as goof as the S5 screen - brigthness, viewing angles..both was bad on the S3.

The only Note devices without PenTile are the Note 2 and the Note 3 Neo.

What's interesting is that the One X comes with panels from two different vendors, Sharp and AUO. The AUO panel is the one that's appeared on all the reviewers test units. It's got far better contrast, more natural colors, and cooler whites. Some of the *****ing about the One X display is from people that have gotten Sharp panels which are noticably warmer. I'm sure Samsung screens all the panels on their reviewer units too so the comparisons are fair.
Here's how the two panels looked side-by-side on the Sensation.

This image is the best we can get, look at the image below
The 1st comparison clearly shows how good is the RGB matrix, despite the red area showing too much dots in s3 the mobile that is captured in that picture has almost same details.
The 2n comparison shows how good is the real blacks in s3 and infact the text looks much crisper. The hox screen simply couldnt match the blacks of amoled.
Do note that this is not the resolution we will be using for daily usage, the resolution used is far from the regular usage
if anyone missed the below image i posted a few days back(extracted from mobile-review.com) it tells a different story
which one looks sharper? judge by yourself

Which one looks more like the original image? That's what matters most. All the pencil pic shows is that the AMOLED displays are presenting the image differently than an LCD panel. That doesn't mean it's correct.
This video compares LCD2 to SAMOLED with mutiple subjects, at different depths, and in different lighting conditions. And each shot starts out by showing the original. It's a GN their comparing but the discussion is sharpness, not brightness, And with similar PPI the GN and SGS3's ability to display detail should be the same.
This is starting to get silly. I have seen image comparisons where i without doubt prefere the S3 over the One X. With this comparison it is the other way around.

I think its slightly taller if not mistaken.
They made the screen slightly narrow than the 1st note because:
1. they wanted the 16:9 ratio (best viewing for movies)
2. to make it more comfortable to hold in your hand.
@Sforever31 Note 2 has more features and more power!
The perceived pixel density will be higher though, so images will LOOK a lot better. And like someone mentioned, no more jagged pentile lines like I see on my GS3.
thanks

It's RGB.
It is RGB (every pixel owns his 3 subpixel) but the arrangement of the subpixels is different from the ordinary RGB screens, thus the missing 'Plus' in the name.

In the left you have a normal RGB pixel (ONE X, S 2, Lumia 920 ...) and on the right you have a Note II pixel. The blue one was made bigger because amoled blue subpixels die faster than green and red. How the screen will perform in real life remains to be seen but I bet it will be much better than pentile.
I was a bit disappointed about the screen being longer and not the same width, but reading a bit about it so far I think it will be beneficial to me to upgrade because I mainly use it for movies.

I know for a fact the note isn't going to be comfortable when riding a bike or going for a run , that's the only problem. And I usually want to have my phone with me at all times. Don't know if I should get the s3 just because it's more portable, the note 2 is definitely the better device though.

I was initially skeptical about Samsung's choice in going for not only a low resolution screen but also a bigger display area. However, after I learned that they've also decided to ditch PenTile in favour of this new RGB matrix, I breathed a heavy sigh of relief.

I remember on my S3 there was a setting in the display menu....I can't remember on top of my head but this setting would allow the S3 to optimize the screen image to save battery. If this setting is enabled on your note like my s3 was then that could be why its not being brighter.
The only thing disappointing about this are the other people showing the Note II being better than the iPhone.

How are you performing your test exactly?
You didn't buy it? How are you testing it in a room so dark then?
I've actually noticed, on my note 1, if you use the 'stock' internet browser and use a power saving mode, then it dims it using a very bluish tint, which looks quite different from just setting brightness at a lower level. So it could be test related.
I can't imagine any reason at all why the screen would be worse than the S3.

i found this
A method of determining implied sample areas for each data point of each color in a source pixel data specified in a first sub-pixel format is used for sub-pixel rendering an image on a display specified in a second sub-pixel format. Each of the first and second sub-pixel formats comprises a plurality of colored sub-pixels. The method comprises determining a geometric center of each colored sub-pixel of the first format to define a sampling point; and defining each implied sample area by forming lines that are substantially equidistant between the sampling point of one colored sub-pixel and the sampling point of another neighboring same color colored sub-pixel. A similar technique may be used for determining resample areas for computing color values for rendering an image specified in a first sub-pixel format on a display substantially comprising a plurality of colored sub-pixels arranged in a second sub-pixel format.

Let's not talk about engadget. Their integrity and competence is zero. They are always at war with samsung. I can give you a big list of proofs, but the discussion will just go OT.
Plain and simple, pentile is nowhere as good as standard RGB. No matter how you try to twist it.
If you manage to notice the difference between pentile and rgb on a dpi of 440 (440 dots per inch!), you should call the guinness book of records, because it means your sight is above human.
96 dpi is the average 1080p computer monitor / TV
150 dpi is normal top quality print
300 dpi is the limit visible by the human eye
440 dpi is overkill... pentile or not pentile... irrelevant

Agreed. It's why I bought a One X over the SGS3. But since, starting with the N2, Samsung's moved away from it what's to be discussed? How bad the SGS3 and Galaxy Nexus were or how bad the SGS4 could have been? When GSMArena does their standardized testing we'll know how good the display is in color reproduction, brightness, and white balance. You can't measure anything on a trade show floor except whether a display looks good or doesn't.
Are people really complaining about pentile at 440 PPI? Are you ****ing kidding me? Drop the crack pipe and wake up.
i want to ask about it's screen if it strong enough,, or as s3 easy to broke :crying::crying:
It is Pentile (RGBG .. Red Green Blue Green) .. take any 2x2 sub-pixel square and you get your pixel .. it is pentile .. just rotated 45° and different shape .. still pentile .. and it is a horrible technology

People love to cry over anything before knowing the facts, I mean your eyes have to be like a ****ing microscope to see the difference at this point.
To me though OLED is better than LCD and I can never go back now thanx to something we can actually see with the naked eye and that's the blacks are grey on LCDs, especially at night.

Does the screen have a bluish tint in the whites similar to galaxy s3?

have they improved it? I can't find any close picture comparisons.. Thanks.

Looks better, but still there. I guess they're doing it to increase screen life or something, but absolutely hate that.
Once I installed Perseus on my Note II, I could hardly believe I'm looking at the same screen. Looks even better than iPhone 5 after calibration

I have no idea why Samsung doesn't use RGB instead, is it because it isn't yet available for high PPI full HD screens?

I believe posters on here claimed cost reasons. too bad.. I prefer the overall design and build, screensize to handset ratio of the s4, but like the htc one screen..
That might not be apparent in normal vision though. S3 has noticeable graininess, but the pixel density on S4 should pretty much settle that IMO.
And I don't know if they took the screenshot with adobe RGB mode or saturated standard mode.
I love SAMOLED, but just wish if they could switch entirely to RGB. Wouldn't mind paying a few extra bucks either tbh if they implemented that on Note 3.

I don't think they can manufacture FHD 1080p yet. At least not in the amounts that the GS4 would demand at a reasonable price.

Yup, two issues: sharpness and color. It looks like the higher resolution overcame the less sharp drawback of pentile, but color tint looks is still there. need to verify what color mode the phone was in though.
welll, just got back from store. htc one's have multiple dipslay with different WB. but the s4 definitely had better WB in my eyes.

Why is this thread even open ? Amoleds will always have a bluish tint. LCDs always have better whites but suffer on black levels.

if you read my response, you'll see that the One has a more bluish tint than the S4.
