[SPECS] Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact specification - Members Thoughts - Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact General

Hey Guys and Gals
Sony adds to its latest Z3 range, this time a tablet. Featuring similar hardware to the Z3 and Z3 compact, performance should not be an issue. Again an interesting feature is PS4 remote play, remote console play on an 8" device sounds like a perfect match. Looking forward to hearing from those who first try it out:highfive:
So lets take a look at the specifications for the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, feel free to comment:good:

If I could just get a version with the voice capabilities intact in the US, I would be all over this. Damn US carriers won't let it happen.
If any of the carriers let it happen, it'll probably be T-Mobile US. If not, I may just save up and import one, assuming I can get a model that gets all the bands I need. I dig the specs and the prospect of of having a 7 inch tablet as my phone.

I don't see any problems with import. I am more or less certain that the SGP621 LTE is the replacement for my Ultra and I am already prepared for the trip to Chinatown and AtGSM. Having a carrier branded device with extra bloatware isn't exactly enticing, the same goes for locked bootloaders and disabled LTE bands like the Verizon Z2 Tablet.
The SGP621 has the following bands according to the Sony whitepaper:
UMTS HSPA+ 850 (Band V), 900 (Band VIII), 1700 (Band IV),
1900 (Band II), 2100 (Band I) MHz
GSM GPRS/EDGE 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz
LTE Band I, Band II, Band III, Band IV, Band V, Band VII, Band
VIII, Band XIII, Band XVII Band XX
This is the model I am planning on getting. The same paper also says "up to 32 GB" for the version, i.e. 32 GB LTE is possible.
If a US carrier would pick it up, be prepared for disabled LTE bands. Verizon disabled all bands but their own for the crippled Z2 Tablet.... The same thing would be highly probable for T-Mobile and I would rather see it sold unlocked direct from Sony. There is always Sony Financing available.
For service plan, I am considering T-Mobile $30 per month.

Hi, any one know if this tablet will have pencil/pen/stylus input like the Z ultra?

There's no specific information about it in the white paper but I would guess that it has a similar feature considering that it is like a bigger "successor" to the Ultra. With the Z2 Tablet, original indications has been for the inclusion of the feature but it seems to have been removed later.
There is one issue that seems to be with the Ultra: If the device is rooted, the precision for sketching is lost, it is only unrooted on stock ROM that it works perfectly. Since I have my device rooted with GPe ROM etc, I have noticed this behavior.
Even if it is a nice feature, I think a regular capacitive stylus + Z3 Tablet Compact will work well too, especially in the rooted scenario.

Thanks. If it is does have the pencil input feature (like you I also think it would) then will be absolutely getting it. The stylus input is essential for me, I use it all the time on the Z Ultra.
If it doesn't have the feature then will still be getting aswell there is no real alternative, and this tablet is so damn sexxyyy.
And Commie, I do agree with you in that I honestly believe this tablet compact is the successor to the Z ultra, just marketed different, as a tablet and not phone.
Also I have a custom ROM (rooted) on my Z ultra but I haven't noticed much inaccuracy using a pencil, but I don't do precise drawings only quick hand written notes so not sure I would noticed anyway.

Sony also sells their devices from their website so if there is a Voice model it would probably be available from there as well and not locked to a single carrier like the C6806

There has been discussions about the "replacement part" in the Z Ultra forum but I just can't see it any other way: Z3 Tablet Compact is the successor. The inclusion of the phone part together with last year and SBH52 as a "handset" headset speak volumes.
I have the impression that the mistake last year was to market the Ultra as a "smartphone" which then led to complaints about camera and size; there were also price moaning and groaning until it dropped. By looking at the Z3 Tablet Compact, I see a device that looks very similar to the Ultra, is indeed a "smartphone" since it has a dialer and is more light and compact than traditional tablets and so on. Its size is not that much bigger either. Just a few mm wider than the Ultra with CP12 Power Cover.
By marketing it as a tablet this time, much of the criticism toward the Ultra is avoided:
1. The camera isn't compared to smartphones but other tablets.
2. The price is lower.
3. People doesn't complain about the size since they compare it with other 8 inch tablets and the same goes for weight.
I am also sure the price will be lower than a Z2 Tablet LTE and all indications point in that direction. It is also worth to point out the complete lack of other options. All other devices released after the Ultra until now is either equipped with smaller screens (5.5-6 inches) or in some ways lesser hardware. There is not a single device like the Ultra, i.e. around 6.44 inches with highend hardware including microSDXC slot.
The Z3 Tablet Compact is clearly the successor and offers 1.56 inches more screen in a slightly wider body (than the Ultra + CP12) and it addresses the main areas such as battery and internal storage by providing 4500 mAh v 3000 mAh and 32 GB v 16 GB (optional on the SGP621).
An added bonus is a lower price and I am also sure the ROM development scene will be more active as well since it isn't "niche" in the same way as the Ultra. It is also a plus that it has the "tablet" label since it means proper phablet mode also in stock ROM with one quicksettings pane and separate notifications, something that breaks later Sony ROMs for the Ultra when 240 DPI is selected.
All in all: I look forward to the Z3 Tablet Compact.

All makes absolute sense. And I hope the Tablet Compact will indeed be more popular so we can get some ROMS. Marketed as a tablet I think it will.

just chk this stylus

Aren't we all still just SPECULATING?!
I've watched every "hands on" video I could find. NOT ONE shows the dialer in action. (One does show the dialer in recent apps) Isn't it logical that perhaps the tablet on display had a generic software and that the released version will not have a dialer?
Repeated attempts to confirm or deny phone capabilities have gone unanswered by Sony, so we should not yet assume it will dial.
As a Z Ultra owner myself, I hope for the function. The new Hangouts DOES make true phone capabilities not AS important, but where I live there is quite a few places where only 2G or 3G are available. Without voice function, the Z3 Tablet Compact would be next to useless for voice calls through Hangouts in these areas.
Lets hope this is truly the next Z Ultra, but FIRST, lets push for a definitive answer!

I don't think they put a dialer in through some kind of "pre production software" - I have never seen something like that, for example when the Z2 Tablet was launched. In the whitepaper, talk time is specified:
Talk time (GSM)
Up to 19 hours**
Standby time (GSM)
Up to 1100 hours**
Talk time (UMTS)
Up to 23 hours**
Standby time (UMTS)
Up to 1300 hours**
Standby time (LTE)
Up to 1100 hours**
This is copied directly from the whitepaper here:
http://developer.sonymobile.com/downloads/whitepapers/xperia-z3-tablet-compact-sgp621-sgp641-white-paper/
My idea is to put it on a mobile broadband plan for Hangouts Dialer or the $30 T-Mobile 100 minutes talk/5 GB data plan. The reason why they don't show the dialer in action is mostly because "it's a tablet" - it seems like they just overlook the detail. At least, the official whitepaper clearly confirms the presence of traditional calling abilities.

White paper...
The white paper for z2 tablet shows 24hrs talk time. I haven't seen a video of anyone using a dialer on it though...

At the moment I see a lot of threads being created with the milliondollar question: Should I buy the Xperia SP?
In this thread/Q&A I will help you choose between this device and another. I will tell my story and why I choose this phone instead of another one. Please share your story aswel so that we prevent a zillion threads with the same question.
My Story:
When I joined XDA-Developers a year ago I had the Samsung Galaxy S Plus. This phone was my first contact with Android, the Development and it's features. The Samsung Galaxy S Plus is a nice phone to have but after 2 years I was able to choose another phone.
My wishes were pretty normal:
Notification LED
At least 1GB of RAM
8GB internal Storage
LED Flash for photos
Also looking at my budget I could not affort a Galaxy S4 or Sony Xperia Z/ZL/Z1. I had to look a bit futher.
On a Dutch Techsite I came across a Thread for the Sony Xperia SP. The device was just released and reading through all of the comments I was interested. I simply Googled the Xperia SP and went to GSM arena (see links below) to check it's Specs. They were good and for my standards perfect for the next 2 years.
Altho this was the first phone I even considerd to get I still had to check other options. I was looking at the website of Vodafone NL and found that for my budget I could choose between the following phones:
Samsung Galaxy S4 mini
Galaxy S3
Galaxy S2 Plus
Sony Xperia L
Sony Xperia SP
Both Samsungs dropped pretty quick; the S3 because it has been released in 2012, has some older hardware and was not "premium" enough for me.
The S4 mini dropped because of the fact it has no notification LED.. And that was one of my wishes.
The Sony Xperia L was a good choice but for some reason it did not suit me. The overall feeling was not "perfect" for me and I had to look futher also 4G(LTE) was missing. The SP was the phone I fell in love with since is first saw it (love at first sight ) and the phone does come with my contract. And thus: on a lazy sunday I went to the Gym and afterwarts I went to the phoneshop and I got myself the Sony Xperia SP the main reason for this phone:
not a Samsung; it was time to look to another brand
awesome notifaction LED-Bar
4G/NFC and Flash
The specifications suits me perfect
FAQ
Q: Why not go for an HTC device?
A: I never liked sense.
Q: What pulled you over?
A: The LED-Bar. After I saw a video on Youtube I thought: THIS IS MY PHONE
Q: How is Sony UI over Touchwiz?
A: Better, cleaner and nicer. Touchwiz is a heavy skin over Android and this is also one of the reasons I wanted Sony. Sony UI is pretty Close to Plain Android.

My reason?
I had Xperia Play before, I even extended my contract because. I loved my XP much. But unfortunately it gets older and decided with heavy heart to find replacement.
I said to myself it's not going to be Sony, because no XP2 but...
I have looked around, played and tested lot of devices and nope, no tingling, no excitation, null, zero, nope :-S
Then in desperate tought decided to went for Xperia Z but that phone was too big to keep in hand and very thin. Suddenly spotted SP and it was love at first sight
Screen is just enough, fits my hand perfectly because righ size and is thicker than Z and notification bar, that's what rises my SWAG
I like this phone, maybe modding my old XP, I used get to Sony look and somehow other not suits me. And most important thing there is Walkman app, which I preffer the most.
That's it, sorry for boring long post, complete away from topic

Yea Good Post, But don't get me wrong the phone is nice in design and all that, but there is some faults to it, 1) is the WiFi? Its got a very poor reception range, The signal cuts off even though I'm sitting next to the router, 2) Constant lag on everything i do like downloading games on the play store while trying to do other things like swiping through the launcher to look at other apps/ even web browsing and texting. 3) The memory is poor if your into games like Dungeon hunter, gta vice city etc ranging from 1gb in size then this phone will fill up very quickly and there's no way of moving apps to sd unless you've got root privileges, (phone only has 5gb memory I believe) maybe less... 4) there's no stock browser either so whatever browser you use will have problems, I've tried loads of third party browser apps and i have constant lag on every single one, I've also got the xperia play and i find multitasking on that phone alot more smoother than the xperia sp. This is my experiences with this phone so don't start calling me a troll etc
@Cloud1989
For me those problems started when I updated my phone from .184 firmware to any newer version.
Now I'm running CM10.1 (29.10.2013 build I believe) and all those problems are gone like the wind. The only thing that could use some improvement is the camera. I hope the 4.3 release will fix that. Lucky for me I hardly take any photos.
Why I bought this phone?
Pricetag, aluminium frame, SD-card, superfast SoC (Adreno 320), nice ledbar, 720p screen, high capacity battery. :highfive:
My previous phone was also the Xperia Play and after two years it was time for a replacement. I was looking for a phone with a decent pricetag and a phone that I could get from my carrier (Hi, NL), also I didnt wanted a phone that was releases more than half a year ago, to get atleast one big update.
Benefits of the Xperia SP: powerfull hardware, a modest size with a 720p screen, aluminium frame, big battery and of course the ledbar .
Negatives: RAM managment or the lack of ram, 1.5 or 2 gig of ram would be better in my opinion. And of course sometimes I still miss the hardware buttons of the Xperia Play .

1) yes it is true that Wifi range is not very good but there are solutions available which improve it with a Rooted rom.
2) Constant Lag? what kind of Bull is this? even on the Stock rom it doesn't have constant Lag. In any case a debloated and tweaked rom runs better.
as for Browser issues, Chrome is crap. Stock Jellybean Webkit browser or Lightning Browser runs Super smooth.
No issues texting.
3) Internal Memory Issues can be easily sorted with a Rooted rom and init.d script or an app like Folder Mount, which moves all those Huge game files and folders to External SD.
4) Tweaking Minfree values improves Multitasking significantly.
as for the stock Browser ...

No idea how someone can come to XDA forums with no desire to Root their Phone, :silly:

It is my story too bro!
I couldn't afford the ZL , and a friend sold me this C5303 slightly used for 300 US Dollars.
Why? Because I was sick and tired of my previous Xperia sola, it had small amount of RAM (~380 MB - that's crap). So I needed a phone with at least 1 GB of RAM. I loved Xperia SP when it was announced, its specs was perfect for me. I didn't realized that it will be my future phone So after using sola i finally decided to sell it and buy Xperia SP. And I don't regret a bit SP has sweet looks, astonishing LED bar, Snapdragon S4 Pro along with Adreno 320 at 720p gives amazing performance, aluminium frame gives a feel of solid device and it will be updated to 4.3 and 4.4 in the future. What more could you want from a device in such a price?
Xperia [email protected] 2
yes, same with me. iam coming from i9001. remember broodplank, ivendor, educk, and of course u mr mrj . iam satisfied with i9001, but 512mb ram is not enough for me. iam looking phone with at least fast dual core proc, high end gpu, 1gig ram, flash camera and elegant design. then iam look at xperia sp. dual core 1.7ghz is enough for all processing power, and adreno 320 with 720p is nice configuration. for me, xperia sp is the best choice for high end spec and low price..
My thought process for this phone was like this:
720p screen? Ok.
1.7 GHz S4 Pro dual core? Niiiice.
Adreno 320? Wow!
4G LTE? Holy crap!
MicroSD, aluminum frame and planned KitKat? I'M SOLD.
All that for <US$300 without contract? = HOLY****IMUSTGETONENOW
nice build
i like d metal frame its not the cheap plastic like all d samsung phones
Guys,
Please help me decide between

3. ONE XL
4. Xperia SP
I know i should not ask about other phones here, so im not doing that.
I will definitely root and mod it. But i want to keep sony UI as i have never used it before. So here is my real question, Whats all this talk of lag on it ???

I'd say go for MotoG... This due to price/spec.. It is not a very expencive device and it has pretty good spec
(or take an Xperia SP Good device too)
So, how did I end up with XSP?
My first Android phone was Samsung Galaxy Ace. Then, I traded it with a Samsung Galaxy W. It was a good phone, but there are annoying shortcomings that made me decide that for the next phone:
* Dual Core is a must
* As is 1 GB RAM
* I need MicroSD
* And also a very good GPU
* Must be root-able
* No more than 400 USD
From GSMArena, I managed to narrow the field down to 7-8 phones, and after doing additional research, found that of those phones, only 3 are actually sold in my country.
So, I began consuming reviews of them voraciously, and ALL reviews I've read about the XSP, ALL praises the XSP. A review even went as far as saying that the XSP is a midrange phone that punches well above its class, so much so that the reviewer kept having to remind himself that he must measure the phone using midrange yardsticks, instead of high-end judgment.
That clinches the deal. And I'm very, *very* satisfied with this phone.

Hi all. I didn't get my SP yet - I'll buy it in June-July - but I'm almost sure I'll get this phone, because my budget is ~250-300€ and now it costs 279, so it's perfectly in that price range.
What made me choose it is definitely the LED bar, coming from an Xperia U I'll miss it if I get another phone
Another reason is the screen, because a 3.5" is too small for my hands, and seeing my sister's Galaxy S3 (4.7") I can reach all of the screen with one hand, so it's perfect
Plus, I love Sony's customizations.
The only phone that will make me change my mind about this purchase is the Z1 compact, if it drops to ~350€ I'll get that one, but it's very improbable
So, I think I'll be part of this community soon

I'm thinking wonderful, but it's sad that I have to buy another device so quickly so I can get Band 12 support. I happen to love my G3, particularly the rear buttons, but a waterproof device has some appeal too, and I hear Sony has a KnockOn knock-off....yes that sounds weird.
I suppose I should still be able to get a lot for my G3 if I do sell it, and there's an XPosed module to make the Sony 5x5 like LG does. Still, side buttons seem so....primitive.
Looks Good enough to kill the iphone 6. does it have an IR blaster?

Is it true Sony stopped using the Anti Shatter Films? I have the Z1s, I heard with the Z2 and onward they stopped using them.
If so, how does the dragon tail glass hold up? As good (or better) than Gorilla Glass?

Apparently no infrared port, judging by the spec page. Also, no USB 3.0 ?
I love How Sony fans are not as demanding as Samsung fans, Z3 is a q1 2014 device yet no one is complaining. On the note 4 forums, Samsung is doomed because they're using latest and fastest soc with best gpu. Go figure

probably because only 13 people in the US can actually get one.. if/when xperia come back to more than 1 US carrier then the device will likely get more scrutiny.. Americans tend to be more vocal and cautious when it comes to spending a fortune on gadgets when there isn't much change from previous iterations to justify buying another device.

My z2 is my first sony android, i had samsungs previously........ z3 doesn't seem different enough from my z2 to warrant even consider buying, especially as im only 5 or 6 months into a 2 year contract. Only thing that interests me on z3 is ps4 remote play but at that price id be better off buying another ps4 for the other room lol

Still getting one in copper. Get bored of a phone that lasts me more than 6 months...
Does the Z3 have a lanyard hole? I don't see it in any of the pictures.

The Note 4 isn't faster because of the 2k display.
In fact, the Z3 will be faster due to better software.
I'm interested in this, more so than I ever was for the Z2.
Sony is doing it right - by not jumping on the QHD bandwagon, they avoid having the problems of a QHD display while still retaining enough screen sharpness to look almost as good as QHD. Anybody who says that they can spot an immediate difference between 1440p and 1080p on a 5"~ screen is lying, or doesn't know what they're talking about.
Other points of interest:
LCD panel, not crappy AMOLED
3100mah battery - huge for a device of this size
32gb memory option with micro SD support up to 128gb - 32gb is enough for everyday use in case you don't like micro SD cards, or your micro SD card fails on you (like mine did a few weeks ago)
waterproof / dustproof
beautiful design
The only real con I can think of is the micro usb flap - with repeated use, it is possible that flap might fall off. I had such a flap on my Samsung GS4 Active, and it gave up the ghost about a week ago - snapping off in my fingers as I removed it. Fortunately there might be a solution where you can buy a USB charging/data cable with a magnetic attachment, to attach to the Xperia's dock charging pins...

Good point. Probably that would be easier to use with a case as well. Most cases will probably block the flap from opening.

Yeah, a magnetic charging cable such as this one has several advantages over a regular micro usb cable. For one, it attaches magnetically so you don't have to fiddle with the cable, and it can attach even when you're driving and need to charge your phone in the phone holder. It avoids repeated use of the plastic flap, so the flap will only have to be removed once in a blue moon to access the micro sd card.
If I get the opportunity to buy a Z3 32gb in Canada, and I know that there will be XDA support for it, then I would be greatly tempted to upgrade to it. The only thing holding me back is the knowledge that the new Nexus phone (whatever it is) will be announced soon-ish, and I would greatly prefer the latest and greatest stock Android over anything else.
I'd be going for the T-mobile model, with WiFi calling, Band 12, and hopefully it has VoLTE as well. Particularly with the WiFi calling, one just has to accept being stuck with the OEM ROM.

we shall see, but so far the rumors don't seem to be holding any water.. and unlike t-mobile, sprint has not posted any thing on their website news regarding it.. yet they quickly posted about how they are getting the note 4 / edge. IMO if they were getting the Z3 they would be as quick as tmobile to post news bragging about it because it would be huge news considering they never really carried a sony phone before.

We're talking Sprint here, how much do you expect? They can't anger Samsung can they?
Clearly I don't think very highly of Sprint, then again, they seem to be more concerned with Huawei and ZTE anyway.

Replacement for an ATIV S

So, my Samsung ATIV S (SGH-T899M) died on me yesterday, and I'm not giving it much likelihood of recovery. That brings me to the question of what to replace it with.
Priorities are:
* Compatibility with T-Mobile USA network. This is mandatory for up to HSPA+ and strongly desired for LTE as well. Unfortunately, offers TMoUS a lousy selection of WP8 devices.
* At least a decent degree of hackability (as I did for the Samsung, I will expand the hackability of any phone I get, but the Lumias in particular seem resistant).
* Good screen: nothing less than 720x1280 and 4.5", more is preferred in both dimensions though anything *over* 6" would probably be too big. Ideal size would be ~5" (the ATIV S at 4.8" was near perfect).
* Good battery life; it doesn't have to be perfect but it should last at least a full 24 hours (my ATIV S did not do so towards the end, but it *used* to last several days unless heavily used).
* Tons of storage. Basically, an SD card is mandatory, though I'll quite happily take larger internal storage as well.
* At least mid-range specs otherwise; I don't want to have to worry about whether a given app will run.
Price is much less important than you might think, although all else being equal I will, of course, take the cheaper option. I'm fine with importing a phone, so long as it works with T-Mobile US and isn't SIM-locked. Slight preference for newer phone models but it's not a big deal. Definite preference for removable battery but it doesn't outweigh any of the factors above. It's fine - possibly slightly preferred - if the phone comes with 8.0 instead of 8.1 but I'd upgrade it anyhow. Good camera is a plus but I already have a "real" camera so it's not a priority, although a front-facing camera (for Skype) is. Bluetooth 4.0 would be very nice (since I believe it's required for BTLE support?) but I can live without.
Models which I am considering:
* Another ATIV S SGH-T899M. Now cheap, if I can find one at all, and they have quite acceptable specs and are very hackable. Not capable of BT4.0 but otherwise very good aside from their age.
* Samsung ATIV SE. Nearly a strict upgrade from the ATIV S in all ways, it's ideal (aside from the lack of BT4.0) if I can get it to work on T-Mobile. Unfortunately, it's sold as a Verizon phone. Anybody know if it's available through GSM carriers, or if the Verizon model can be used with T-Mobile as-is? If I have to pay a bit more for a SIM unlock that's acceptable, so long as it works with T-Mobile's towers and SIM cards.
* HTC One M8 for Windows. Perfect, specs-wise, if it works on T-Mobile. Hackability is still being explored but looks promising.
* Something Lumia. There's so many I really don't even know which are worth considering and which aren't. I'm not going to take anything with *worse* specs than my ATIV S, but that still leaves plenty. Hackability-wise, it'd be a step backward but there's a lot to be said for me being *incentivized* to hack the most common WP8 device family. I have a 520 as a test device, but it's not suitable for my everyday use (for many reasons).
Recommendations (from those models, or others you think are suitable) are much requested. I'd like to buy within the next few days, so something coming out "soon" better be excellent to give me any reason to delay.
Thank you!
You might try the Nokia Lumia 1020. I've got it from T-Mobile on contract here in Macedonia. Believe me it's worth to the last of the penny. It's powerful camera offers a lot of possibilities. It's fast and has excellent big bright amoled display. I think it's perfect for your needs. And i think that it's time for you to make a small change from the Samsung world. Who knows maybe the Lumias will give you some new possibilities and visions even for the other brands. Anyway, my personal thoughts are that you should try to move to another brand than the Samsung even for a short period of time. Take care and keep up the good work. ?

@cevi: Thanks for the suggestion, but I probably won't get the 1020. As much as I do like the idea of that excellent camera, the 1020 is kind of underwhelming in other ways and the lack of SD card slot is a deal-killer for me.
EDIT: I'd be much more likely to get something like the 1520, even though it's actually a bit bigger than I'm looking for. There's some promising progress in its hackability (may or may not apply to other Lumia phones too).
Excellent choice GDTD. It will surely spread the spectrum of possibilities for hacking WP. Thumbs up. ?
@ceesheim: Ooooh, that definitely boosts the chance of my getting the ATIV SE. I *think* it will even get LTE on TMoUS, although I've seen different specs for it in different places. There's merit to the argument that I should have a non-Samsung phone, though, too. Hmmmmmm...
We need you GDTD.
Signed: The "Lumia's". Hahaha
Anyway, your choice.
P.S. Take the 1520. ??

You are already a Legend in the Samsung world. But in Lumia the throne is still untouched. We are building history here for God's sake. ?
I think, here is my choice.
1. Lumia 1520.
2. Samsung Ativ SE (as above)
3. Or wait for "New Generation MSFT Lumia". It would be good for hardware configuration and any upgrade plan's.

I'd either WAIT for a few weeks for T-Mobile's variant of the OneM8 w/Win or go ahead and get Verizon's edition. I've already got the One M8. The first thing I've learned about the thing is that the dot view case only operates by a magnet sensor under the screen. No wonder there's a bunch of generic ones on the market. There's been some work on the Android side to install WP8.1.1 that's already done, but no movement.
I would NOT get the ATIV SE; the XAP I uploaded doesn't work with the toast launcher with no updates out of the box as it comes with a different Diagnosis. The toast launcher will open it, but it gets stuck at the splash. @-W_O_L_F- took a look at it a little back.
Lumia 830
If you go down the Lumia road, my suggestion is the Lumia 830.
Has pretty much everything you mentioned (5" screen in a metal frame, 1280x720, removable back cover, replacable battery, SD card...)
Be sure to pick the RM-985, that one is confirmed to work on T-Mobile USA. Otherwise I'd pick the M8 for Windows.
@thals1992: Is it confirmed that T-Mobile is getting the One M8 Windows? It's a nice phone that I'd happily use, but I'm leery of grabbing a Verizon model (the same problem applies to the ATIV SE). Do you know when it's supposed to arrive?
I'm not worried about the hackability of the ATIV SE; unless they *completely* screwed up the RPCComponent's service, I can use that one way or another (no need to use Diagnosis specifically). Similarly, I am pretty sure I can unlock the Verizon lock on the Internet Sharing feature (though that doesn't mean it will work on T-Mobile afterwards).
@GOgzs: Huh, I hadn't even been considering anything that "low-numbered" but the 830 does look pretty nice. Its specs are a little weak - the CPU is actually slower than the ATIV S, though it has twice as many cores, and it only has 1GB of RAM (same as the ATIV S but lower than many newer phones) - but it has an excellent feature list and the screen is acceptable. When you say the RM-985 is "confirmed to work on T-Mobile USA" does that mean things like LTE and such work?

Except for the obvious prediction that the next xperia is called z5 the rest of the article is purely speculative with no source (credible or not) mentioned. It more looks like the author just put together a wish list of his own. Honestly I grew tired of getting excited about these baseless prediction just to be disappointed when the actual release date came.
If you think about it logically, except for a very small group of geeks (myself happily included) who admire the engineering marvel that xzu is, most ordinary people ridicule this phone. The reaction I get from other people when they see me with the phone is that it is way too small to be a practical tablet and way too big to be a practical phone. That is why despite its excellent specs it is selling for around 250 dollars these days and no one is rushing to deplete the stocks.
Sony needs to revive its mobile business very badly and has to focus on the smallest number of investments with the highest return. Look at tablet z4 for example which anyone immediately falls in love with. And on the phone front it should follow a two tier premium model that was started by Samsung with the s series and note series, and copied by Apple as iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s plus, which has proved to be a super successful model in the United states and elsewhere. Another ultra phone has no place in such a line up, as sad as it may be for me and others in this forum.
Sorry to disappoint, but the next ultra will most likely have 6" display. the reason for it is obvious: much more pants pocket friendly. no brainer. most people aside of a minority of hardcore mobile geeks/some woman who carry a purse 24/7 who want larger display then 6" will buy a tablet. they want profit in 2016 and they want to rival mpte 5. 6s plus, lg new phablet, etc. and not some negligible chinese tablets with phone capabilities. there is no other way. it is a very good expected and wanted move for sony and all should be happy, including sony fans aside of minority of people who actually use z ultra as daily driver. most people beg sony to make a flag phablet that they actually never made (full flagship spec, more pocket friendly, etc.).

I agree. I don't know if its gonna be 6" (personally would prefer 6.2" if we can't have 6.4" again) but it will be smaller. The reason is simple: ZU didn't sell as well as they wanted.
Although I would argue if they do not release similar flagship phones every half a year the ZU would have position itself better to compete directly with the Galaxy Notes. But it seems they're still following the same business model they will blame on the size of the ZU being unpopular among consumers.
Most consumers and sony fans voice is loud and clear: "sony! make a phablet flag, give it the best spec - every feature of what the main size flag has and more, give it some simple software features to make good use of a large display like 2 windows mode, make it as pocket friendly as possible, don't make the display larger then 6", height dimensions should be as short as possible to further make it easier to carry in pants pocket". this is what i hear and read in the last 2 years. imagine such device with the beautiful sexy new design that only sony know to design, 6" JDI/AUO QHD display, 2 front speakers, latest camera sensor imx230, beefy 4000-4500 mAh battery, etc. *day dreaming*
6 inch display? Too small. It will be a tablet for me then. The Z3 TC or a Z5 TC is on my list of potential successors if they just introduce a 6 inch "Ultra".
I use my device for reading, browsing and so forth, which make 6 inch or smaller display inconvenient and a 10 inch tablet too big. Sweetspot is between 6.5-8 inches and devices smaller than 6.44 is not interesting at all, regardless of specifications due to a way too small display making the general use more uncomfortable (increased need for zooming and so on).
I agree. z3tc is definitely a good upgrade from z ultra and its true successor imo. there is no news of sony working on a new tc for 2h so its the best small tablet option. http://www.amazon.com/XPERIA-TABLET...=1437248308&sr=8-1&keywords=z3+tablet+compact
I'm all for phablets, but... 8in is too much even for me to be a phone that I can carry... 7in with no border would be ideal... Make a new ultra already sony...
Meh, I will always stick to at least 6 coll phones since the Z ultra and the only thing I care about is price and micro SD support.
If somone goes the route of samsung and starts to refuse microSD slots, **** them. Everything that is for the mainstream is for retards. Its nothing for a serious person .
The moment a serious Ubuntu phone comes, with decent specs, I would swtich immediately. I am through with these so called "mainstream" phones.
Z5 can't be the 820 if it's in September. Qualcomm roadmap says December for that chip's release.

Not to mention that it will have ZERO community support, ZERO customer support in case of faults.
I'm hoping and waiting with my finger crossed for September.
I just feel Sony will not disappoint this time.
If the real news is just the 4K screen, with SD810 etc etc, I'll just wait a little bit more until it gets in the hands of various sites/blogs, wait for their impressions.
When I bought the Ultra I went on and read every single hands on, review or article regarding it, and every single one, despite dragging it down on measures (too big to do this, to large to do that etc), every single one was impressed on how much a beast was this phone.
Now this is what I want for the next Ultra. To be a freaking Unicorn. I don't give a s#it if they sell one or one million, I'll be the first in line to get it. [emoji12]

5.7... ? 3600mAh... ? Fail.
6 inches could be fine IF Sony introduce a Z5 Tablet Compact with similar features. I have tried to fit the Z3 TC in my pockets and it works well so a device that size is a working backup plan if it would turn out that the next "Ultra" is a degradation of screen estate.
The next Ultra should have minimum a 6.44 inch display or up to 7 inch in order to qualify as a proper successor. A smaller 6 incher would be too much of a step back since it would require a lot of extra zooming when reading.
It would be great if Sony would make a keyboard flip cover as well and also further development of stylus support where they got on the right track with the "graphite pen" capable Ultra screen.
If the increased size of the device can be used to facilitate proper cooling of a Snapdragon 810, it could be an OK choice but if it turns out that the heating issues from the Z3+ is there, then it would be a huge drawback from the Ultra, which haven't overheated a single time during those two years I had it.

I was eyeing this since it was announced but I affraid it does not has the required US lte bands, especially T Mobile.

Why do you think it won't support US LTE?

Does it really not support Java?
I'm on hot waters for deciding a new phone. If this doesn't come to US and being able to be used on Verizon, that's where I'm making the jump for the Galaxy S7 Edge. I have everything dedicated towards my current phone, but being outdated is no fun. :/

Not without being on America's number one network.
If you mean you need CDMA I fear they give very few damns to something that adds complexity with no real gain.
Also, for your's sake (given you are posting on XDA, right?) you should avoid locked down cramped device.

64GB model?
Hey I saw 64GB model of Xperia X in GSMarena specifications
Is it true and will Xperia X Performance have that too? cause that would be so awesome.
And it's not listed in Sony Mobile page also and I saw in Chinese Website in Taobao they mentioned about 64GB model, which is really awesome if they bring to the table cause I feel like it's a must since Android OS is taking like 9-10GB of internal storage.

Giga,
Unfortunately, this phone WILL NOT work (at least not fully) on any CDMA networks/carriers........... Verizon, Sprint, & U.S. Cellular are all CDMA. The only major carriers that it WILL work on are the GSM ones............ T-Mobile or AT&T.
If you'd like more proof of this, then check here as I did. I have T-Mobile so for me it'll be fine. The only thing that's NOT fine is Sony taking F'ING FOREVER to release this d*mn phone! lol
You could always switch to T-Mobile too if you want. It just depends on your service area and how happy you are with Verizon. I had them before but I felt they charged too much, so I switched to T-Mobile and am VERY happy with them! You get more for less with them I feel. But like my sister lives in an area where T-Mobile is still not yet that strong (though this is changing rapidly IMO), and so she recently switched to Verizon and is very happy. But typically wherever I go I have a strong signal, especially since they recently cleared a Band 12 (700 MHz bandwidth spectrum) issue in my area. Now even indoors in like downtown (Chicago) area where before I had a low or no signal, it's now full strength! Plus if you switch they'll cover your early termination fees (if any) with Verizon.
I had the Z3 and it was the BEST phone ever! I recently got the S7 Edge and it's really nice but was too big IMO. Plus my fingers would accidentally sometimes hit stuff on the edge sides and activate/affect stuff on the screen like apps or video that I didn't intend to be touched. Maybe just takes some getting used to? So I switched to the regular S7 and yeah it's a great phone overall but due to me being unhappy with the physical home button, the sound quality and sound-related issues on this phone (crappy speaker, issues with connecting to portable amp/DACs) and lousy screen brightness (sucks under heavy sunlight), I am basically COUNTING THE DAYS until the X Performance is released! Sony phones are like the only ones left that I can stand at this point. lol
I wanted to give Samsung another chance after S5 (which I kept for like 4 days and returned cuz I couldn't stand it either lol), plus with all the promos they had like free Netflix etc I said F it. I love the promos, but now I feel stuck with the phone. I just hope Sony releases the X Performance by June as they said they would. I don't know why it's taking so long as everyone else has or will have released their phones by May (HTC 10). The only news we have is that the Xperia XA & X are to be released in the UK in early June (XA) and on May 20th (X). Lucky for them, though they are NOT getting the X Performance but we in the U.S. are.

I was checking Sony Mobile's US site tonight to see if there was an update on release dates and noticed that they had removed the fingerprint sensor from the specs list. I don't think it's ever had water resistance listed since I've been checking on updates. These features are both listed on Sony's Italian site. Why doesn't Sony want to succeed in the US? Who's going to pay probably $700+ for one of these? I guess I have to decide between the Z3 or a Z5 if I'm going to get a Sony phone. I was going to wait on the X Performance since it should be a little more durable, even though I don't think it looks as nice.
Hey Buggy,
Yeah you're right! And this is not even a WEEK after they'd added the fingerprint sensor TO the U.S. X Performance! Man, I love Sony's Xperia phones, but their marketing & sales people are f'ing stupid!! lol
The water resistance (IP65/68) is only available on the global/international model, which I am sure is the same as the Italian model. The U.S. model does NOT have this listed anywhere, so it won't have it either. This section from the int'l version's full specs page proves that even more so: "Durability
IP65/IP68 **; **: This service is not available in all variants or markets." So I am sure the U.S. variant won't have it (stupid Sony).
It sure DOES feel like they don't want to succeed, doesn't it? The ONLY good thing that the U.S. variant has that the other variants apparently do not is the inclusion of the QNovo Quick Charge 3.0 charger IN the box! So now, for the first time ever, Sony is giving us U.S. citizens something no other country is getting (wow! lol). If you go to the U.S. site you'll see it listed towards the bottom. But I'd still rather have water-resistance and a functioning fingerprint sensor.
I had the Z3 and it was the BEST phone I've ever had! I have the S7 now and yeah it's a great phone "overall" but once the X Performance comes out, I'm totally selling my S7 and getting the X Perf. F Samsung. lol No other phone out there does it for me. Only one that I'd even get is the HTC 10, but that would only be if I couldn't get the X Perf for some reason.
I actually really like the look of the Xperia X Performance. At first I didn't think I'd like it w/o the glass back, but actually, the graphite black and silver/white models have a brushed aluminum/hairline finish, which I LOVE. I'm super excited to get this phone! I even actually FOUND an online seller (who just happens to be located 10 min away from me......Chicago suburbs) who has the X Performance in all 4 colors available for pre-order right now. The company is called Expansys, and they have international locations all over the world. The U.S. Expansys site has the int'l (and yes better lol) version of the X Performance, so I pre-ordered it last week! If interested, go here to pre-order your own today! They have an A+ rating on the Better Business Bureau website, and I know of one person who's already ordered from them several times w/o any issues. Current release date for X Perf is 1st week of July. Hopefully that doesn't change (stupid Sony lol).
Well I think I've decided to just go with the Z3 or Z5(or the compact) for now and save a few hundred dollars. Sad that our choice for the new phone is a gimped version with a warranty or the no warranty international version with all the features(minus the quick charger). Does insurance like Square Trade cover phones without warranties?
I've enjoyed my HTC One M7 and wouldn't be looking for a new phone if I hadn't cracked it's screen. It still works just fine though, but it's given me an excuse to finally try a new brand and I've always thought Sony's were nice looking. I have a Tablet S that has worked well for me, even though Sony quickly abandoned it. The HTC 10 is also one of the only other phones I'd consider. Just hate that they ditched the distinctive front speakers. It now looks like a generic phone in front. I've never liked the looks of Samsung's UI or their phones...just too rounded. LG's V10 is nice, but too big.
Buggy,
You may (or may not) want to still get the XP after hearing what I have to say here. But either way (Z3, Z5, or XP), they are all great phones. The XP may not have the glass back of the Z-series, but for the most part it IS an improvement over both those phones. The XP has a better processor, the Snapdragon 820, which is more power-efficient than the Z5's 810 (40% more actually), and the slightly smaller screen adds to that 40% too. It has the same main camera sensor, but "improved algorithms" in the software to make for even better pictures, in addition to that "Predictive Hybrid Autofocus" feature which Sony has focused a great deal on. This official comparison review video of the Z5 vs. the X (X & XP have the SAME screen & camera) highlights some of the other improvements. But as the video points out, the main specs might be the same, but the software is apparently different. And the front camera apparently has better specs too. Watch it all if you like, but definitely watch 3:35-4:25 with regards to the screen brightness & color accuracy comparisons, and a little after that are the camera comparisons. To me, the XP is worth waiting for. But that's me. I have the S7 and the screen brightness on it sux a$$ under heavy sunlight, so I believe the XP will be better after watching that video. I'll be SHOCKED if the XP's brightness isn't higher than the S7's. I'll be comparing them both regarding that on the day I get the XP. lol Then there's this camera comparison b/t the XP, HTC 10, and Galaxy S7. For the first time EVER, Sony's smartphone camera BEATS Samsung's in quality and color accuracy while in auto mode! I don't believe this was the case even with the Z5. And this isn't even the final release version of the camera software either!
I have some good news regarding insurance on the unlocked XP. Not sure on Square Trade, but I have T-Mobile as my carrier, and they use Assurance for the phone insurance. I confirmed with TWO T-Mobile reps and ONE Assurance rep that as long as I register the XP on my T-Mobile account and keep paying the $8/mo insurance charge that Assurance WILL insure my unlocked XP phone, even though of course I'm NOT buying it from T-Mobile. This was VERY good news to hear! lol So now buying the (cheaper) int'l version makes even more sense.
Sounds like we think alike. I had the M8 and it was my SECOND favorite phone of all time, with the Z3 being #1 of course. lol That sux about your M7 screen, but yeah that was 3 years ago, so now maybe it IS time for an upgrade, especially if you have a cracked screen. I couldn't agree more on HTC's idiotic decision to remove the 10's bottom speaker and move it to the bottom side, and how it degraded the looks. They could've easily put that fingerprint sensor in front (which is NOT a physical button you can press by the way, which is a + IMO) on the back somewhere or the side like Sony does. I think they were trying emulate Samsung and Apple, which yes makes the phone look more generic. I hope the HTC 11 will see a return of the front-facing stereo speakers for HTC. That's one of the reasons I love Sony so much. They have not abandoned that speaker set up on their flagship phones, and they are still making a flagship-worthy phone that is NOT a phablet. I hate phablets (tried the S7 Edge.......too big IMO), so I'm glad Sony hasn't gone that route. If the XP wasn't coming out, I'd strongly consider the HTC 10 actually.
I too strongly considered the LG V10, mainly because LG put a premium amp/DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) chipset in the V10. It has the same chipset used in my $300 Oppo HA-2 portable amp/DAC. With a phone like that I wouldn't need the HA-2 in b/t my phone and headphones anymore, but again like you, I felt it was simply too big, so I passed, despite its great specs. And yes..... Samsung. lol Not a fan either of their UI or phones, though both have improved much in the last couple of years (I def like that they ditched the plastic-bodied phones finally, which I'm sure Sony and Apple had an influence on lol). The UI is still laggy IMO (downloads faster than my parents' Xperia Z1s ((2014)), but when jumping from app to app on the Z1s, I notice it loads up QUICKER than the S7, for real), the menu is less confusing than the S5's was but still not as simple as HTC's and Sony's, the stupid & awful-sounding lone bottom-facing speaker, the constant skipping when listening to music on it via the MicroUSB port (super annoying), and that physical home button: I hate them. lol I tried to give Samsung another chance, but although the phone is great in many respects & I got some sweet promos from buying it (i.e. 1 year of free Netflix HD streaming, etc), I have no desire at this point to keep it any longer than I have to.
I love Sony's Xperia phones the most, so whichever one you get will be great for sure.

RockStar2005,
Thanks for your input and the tip on T-Mobile's insurance policy. I know I want a Sony phone, but I'm still so indecisive when there's quite a chunk of money involved. If the XP is over $700 are the improvements really worth $200-$300 more than a Z5 or Z3? Plus, how long is it really going to be before it's released here? Sony seems to be pushing back the release dates in Europe. Guess it will just give me more time to save up. lol

Buggy,
Not a problem. Thought you might find that information useful.
Yeah I understand. And you've got a cracked front screen to deal with as well. The price of the XP HERE in the U.S. will very likely be less than the price it goes for in other countries. We (the U.S.) don't charge VAT (Value-Added Tax) on imported products like other countries do, so that helps keeps the prices down. You may still pay a LOCAL tax, but not a VAT too. Just something to keep in mind.
I can't really tell you if it's "worth it" because you know my answer, but you may not feel the same way. Again, if I had a cracked screen I may not be so patient either. You could just buy the Z3 or Z5 then upgrade again when the XP is here, or at some point in the near future?
How long? That's a great question Buggy. lol Though Sony IMO makes the BEST phones, their marketing and sales departments are dumb as F. lol I mean, NO real ads for the Xperia smartphones here in the U.S.? No billboard or TV ads? Nope, but they do put those video ads up on YouTube! Of course, the reason why that's so dumb of them to do is that the only ppl who will see them are those who were gonna prob buy an Xperia phone anyway! lol You think if someone doesn't know about their phones they're gonna magically think to go to YouTube to watch their ad? And the ads aren't even that great typically, with one exception (see pics and especially the vid). They need more ads like this one that are personable, and also I think some ads with some big actors like George Clooney, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, etc.
In countries like Sweden, Sony is just as big, if not bigger, than Samsung......and big surprise, they actually ADVERTISE there. lol But anyway, yes, the X got pushed back about 2 weeks, but I believe it will still come out in June. Now when it actually comes out HERE is another story. lol I wish I could tell you the XP will get released on time, but I don't know. Sony Mobile DID re-promote them all in the U.S. just yesterday (see link below, and videos too), but still, no dates were announced. I realize as time goes on that trying to make sense of their odd way of doing business is basically a waste of time. I'm just gonna wait for the phone, buy it, and hope they get their act together one day. lol
JUST saw this new article as I was typing this e-mail. Hopefully it means they are on schedule? Of course, I'm not buying the U.S. version anyway, but I figure the sooner either the U.S. or int'l version gets released, the sooner the U.S. will get both.

Buggy,
Not a problem.
Well, as my phone is still working, I have time to wait. I'm just impatient and I want a shiny new phone now! (even is it ends up being a year or two older than the latest thing)
You'd think with also being a music and movie company they'd have some celebrities who'd do commercials for them...or at least do more product placement in videos and movies Music videos would be good because they probably get watched by a lot more people than most movies, and repeatedly. I guess they did with the last James Bond movie but it's not nearly enough. It would be nice if they made more of an effort here in the US to market their phones. They need to quit gimping the US versions though, and maybe that's why they don't do much to promote them. They'd have more people going "BUT WHYYY?!?!?!?! THAT'S SO STUPID!!," like me.
Buggy,
Yeah your phone is working which is good, but I hear you on being impatient and wanting to replace it. I'm hoping the new US videos mean they're fully intending on releasing the XP on time (1st week of July!). It makes me nervous though that the X is supposed to come out on June 10th, yet the U.S. Sony Mobile site STILL does not have it listed for pre-order, neither does the international site. The UK Amazon site has it for pre-order though, but the U.S. Amazon site doesn't even have it listed period. I'm hoping that maybe Sony will just release them all at one time here in the U.S., but who the F knows? lol God do I wish I could just put my foot up Sony Mobile's idiot CEO's ass just once! lol
Yes, I would AND DO think that! They had the Sony-Erickson phone (whatever its name was) in Casino Royale, which came out 10 years ago! lol Not sure on Quantum of Solace, but SkyFall (2012) featured the original Xperia Z in it. Then came SPECTRE last year........ that's when they stopped featuring Xperia phones because Daniel Craig and director Sam Mendes didn't think it was "Bond-worthy". So instead I think they featured some watch instead. They did however do a Bond-related ad which actually DID get some U.S. TV time (shocking, I know lol) but only ran for maybe a month? lol It featured Moneypenny and was actually an ad for both the Z5 and their new camera at the time. Whatever........that movie wasn't anything special anyway. lol It was nice though to actually see an Xperia ad on TV though vs. online.
I've been saying in these various forums for months now.........you're SONY........get some big actors like George Clooney, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, etc to do ads for you. DON'T make them generic or boring. Get a U.S. ad agency to do them perhaps. I mean, the last 2 actors I just mentioned have ALREADY DONE movies for Sony, so they already have an established relationship with them. I even wrote to Sony Mobile and told them to do this too. I mean, they should get like Sony Movies and Sony Music etc to invest some money into Sony Mobile too..................if SM features ads with these actors or musicians, it's a win-win for both parties. And yes, removing key features from the U.S. versions is inexcusable BS and needs to stop too. So frustrating. If I didn't love their phones to death (or hate the competing phones out there so much lol), I'd go elsewhere. I just hope the XP comes out on time. I mean, it's gotten so bad to where I'm literally checking out stuff daily. I even have a "Google Alerts" setup on the XP.........I get an e-mail every night right after midnight giving me updates on anything new that's related to it. lol Can't wait for this crap to be over with.
Buggy,

Pre-orders for XP begin June 19th, XP gets officially released on July 17th! Now, I think this is for the U.S. XP, which of course is somewhat lacking (no IP65/68, and I guess now they took the fingerprint sensor back off it), though it WILL come with the QNovo Quick Charge 3.0 charger. I though will be getting the int'l one, which I'm hoping will come out SOONER than the U.S. version? I know it will most likely be cheaper too, since the int'l Z5 is cheaper than the U.S. version is. But the fact that the U.S. one has a date at least means we have a better idea of when things will start to happen.
For now, I will keep my pre-order in place with Expansys, which is for the int'l one. They are located all over the world, but the U.S. one is like 10 minutes away from me (Chicago suburbs). But if U.S. Amazon gets the int'l one too by early July, then I'd rather just order from them.
