[Specs] Sony Xperia Z3 Compact Specifications - Members Thoughts - Xperia Z3 Compact General

Hey all
Here Sony have gone against the past "mini" devices, the compact is a fully featured little brother of the flagship Xperia Z3. Boasting the same chipset, albeit with reduced RAM. It also features the same PS4 remote play feature. Something I'm sure we would all like to see ported to other devices. Its a promising Smartphone for those who feel the shear size of the flagship devices are getting out of hand.
Lets take a look at the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact's specifications, feel free to comment

Thanks for the link to the white paper. Originally I thought they might have removed/disabled ANT+ as it wasn't listed in the product website but is mentioned in the white paper. Looking to use it for cycling and hoping with battery life it can do up to 6 hours with GPS enabled.

Regarding expandable storage, it isn't really limited to 128GB, it's just that nothing larger exists. Technically according to the microSDXC spec it is limited to 2TB expandable storage.

Has anyone had any confirmation on whether there'll be a glove or pen mode?

I don't think they say 128gb max, because there isn't any bigger, but because Sony itself supports till that size. The system itself supports bigger of course.

720p with snapdragon 801. This thing will fly and battery life will be better than z1c

Thanks for correcting this, it has been erroneously reported as 64GB in a lot of places

Cheers guys:good: Updated the OP.

Looking forward to the 20.7 mp camera. Currently have an HTC one m7, worst camera ever. Also like the compact size and decent battery capacity.

I wish they have 3gb ram and 32gb memory

Ditto. Although would the reduced RAM offer better battery life? The 720p screen was a smart move and I completely understand that decision, but I'm wondering why they only went with 2 gb of RAM? People will say, Who needs 3 gb? But that's just a tired answer, why upgrade anything at all then? It's been shown that the extra RAM would improve performance, but I'm curious if it also affects battery.

Hmm yeah, I don't know. I guess it does matters 'a lot', in theorie 1gb extra ram would add 33% more power consumption.

In that case the battery would be used just from the memory. Not from screen, network etc.
2Gb are enough, the z3 needs 3 because of the full hd display because there is no separate graphics ram.

have the 2GB RAM been confirmed?... gsmarena states in all previews that it will have 3GB as it's bigger counterpart... but the specs page say it's 2GB, so I was wondering (or hoping) if it was a "typo" of them when making the specs page .

oh well... Sony site says 2GB. Link. It should be more than enough though...

Against fist rumors it seems that the bezel/frame is not aluminum.
Sony used some plastic for the sides.
After using my beloved One S for two years now i think i will miss the feel of the surface.
Hope the glass and the frame will not be prone to scratches.
But i'm really tempted to get this phone and hope some Devs will give us some fabulous roms.

This will be my next phone!!!!
i'm just waiting for clove.co.uk to get it in stock and hopefully bundle one of the smartbands/watches w/it again like the Z1 was.
I'm an AT&T USA customer and was previously on Tmobile USA and loved my Xperia Z1 and haven't upgraded phones since getting it last nov. The biggest feature that Sony has above everyone else? Waterproof phones.
Plus, a 'mini' phone that has the exact flagship specs = PURE WIN!!! and to top it off, PS4 remote play.. oh yea!

The Z3C could have been the ideal phone for me if only it had a few "minor" changes. First and foremost 32 GB of internal storage then 3 GB of ram and the matte back surface of the Z3C tablet.
Hope Sony will adress these "issues" while keeping the same footprint.

There is no such thing as a 'perfect' phone.
They could have added these things easily, but didn't chose to do so because it would consume more power.
The matte back surface is purely based on taste

I actually prefer the glass-sandwhich look. I'm coming from a Nexus4, which I've realised since the beginning was too big for my taste, and this z3compact seems the perfect phone for me.

I got to play with the Atrix yesterday...

So i'll start with the good, the screen is really nice.
The bad:
Not 4.3 even though it's higher res, it's nice to have larger size text.
I launched google maps and I wanted to see how the 2 finger rotating worked on both. It actually worked better on the EVO. You would think with a powerful cpu the atrix would be able to rotate with no lag...
Anyway, we're not missing much (It probably is better at 3D games which i don't normally do on my phone)
Edit:
I must add though that the build quality seemed excellent and it's nice size phone with perfect weight. It's a nice product don't get me wrong.

LOL.......
All I know about motorola is that their buld quality seems really solid. I don't care for Blur, but root solves that. The phone seems like a winner.
My buddy had an original Droid, was playing Pandora one day while we were about 25 feet in the air on a boom lift... dropped that sucker and all it did was pop the battery door off and scratch it a little... still worked like a charm.
Sadly, if I dropped my EVO from that Height.. it's smartphone heaven. I do still love my EVO tho

The actual core of the cpu is an a8 cortex. I believe Google maps doesn't use much of the gpu, and Android and Android apps might not be able to make much use of multiple cores or threads.

the tegra 2 uses cortex a9 cores. but your probably right that android currently isn't optimized for the tegra2/dual core.
Atrix suffers from one severe limitation, which for many will be a complete deal breaker - ATT + their awesome atrix premium charges for using the atrix functionality.
bet if the atrix said evo and sprint on it you would think the world of it and go into the land of iphony and preach its gospel to the unenlightened

yup, two years ago i used to brag about how fast sprint 3g was. gizmodo even rated them as having the fastest 3g of all carriers. then hspa+ came and t-mo/at&t passed us which was bad enough, but then sprint's 3g just took a complete nose dive over the last couple of months. what the hell is up with that? sprint's 3g is no where near as competitive with anyone anymore.

Not with a locked bootloader because all of the good Dev's on here would not be supporting it, so it really wouldn't be worth it. No CM7 Love or probably fresh or anyone else.

Kernel hacking
I don't think so I think the fast charging is a feature built in to the Qualcomm chips.

For me is 3 things that are causing noise:
1) The pixel density is what's causing the first impact (not in a good way) in me. I'm no expert when it comes in judging screen but when other devices with far smaller screens as well as devices that have been in the market for a long time come up with much higher densities, it does make you wonder about this brand new flagship device that only offers 281 ppi. (And please, spare me the explanation about how irrelevant pixel density is in relation to the smaller screen sizes, I understand that).
2) Also, the 2GB RAM (as opposed to 3).
3) The portability aspect of such a big device: the physical size and weight seem to be a concern, specially when you're upgrading from the fantastically compact Nexus 7 (2013).
edited: I forgot about a 4th thing that has me deeply disappointed:
4) Lack of wireless Qi-charging capability.
But who are we kidding, being the nerds we are, we know most of us here will be getting one regardless.
Its not quad core denver chip but dual core denver chip
I agree on #1 and #3.. This is a step backwards from the DPI on the N7 and at 425g its pretty much the same as a 9.7 inch Ipad air (437g)

I like the 4/3 form factor. Only time I have used this form factor on a tablet was on an Ipad. I personally don't like Ipad but one thing I loved is that form factor. Easier to hold and work with.
Android L looks good. I can't wait to see how fast the K1 will be using ART.
Funny to see that the N9 camera will protrude from the tablet a little bit, like on the new Iphone 6 (Iphone users complained about this). I personally don't care but I'm sure some future N9 users will complain about it.
Camera is not the best but hey, who brings a tablet to take pictures? Grab your DSLR or your phone Pple looks so stupid when taking picture using a tablet..lol. This also makes me think about something else. Why not putting a better resolution camera on the front? Personally, when I'm using my tablet camera, It's for Skype. I never took a picture using the main camera, Imo, the 8 Mp camera should be front facing so we can have descent video resolution when skyping.
2 Gb of ram is enough for me, especially when using "pure" android (no Sense or TouchWizz UI). 3Gb of ram would have raised the price too much and most users don't need 3gb.
Polycarbonate cover:
HTC were so excited when they announced that the One X was getting a uni-body poly-carbonate shell back in 2012. This polycarb. design caused so much trouble with that phone, the polycarb. body was somewhat flexible and caused bad electrical contact between main board and antennas glued inside the polycarb cover. (i.e the infamous Wifi issue of the One X) I personally don't thrust polycarb anymore, I prefer aluminium body like the M7/M8. Hopefully, they have designed the N9 so that problem will not occur again...
Tegra K1 CPU:
I also had bad experience with Tegra CPU on my One X. They announced the Tegra 3 (in 2012) to be a powerful quadcore CPU with very good power consumption using a battery-saver "companion" core to handle low-power tasks when 4 cores are not required (standby mode, playing music etc etc). Performance wasn't there (compared to the qualcomm equivalent of that year) and power consumption was really bad. I was very disappointed by Tegra CPU. Also used a Tegra 2 on my gf's Asus TF101. I prefer qualcomm cpu, much faster and power friendly. It also looks like there is more development for qualcomm CPU than Tegra CPU. But K1 is ready and Qualcomm's 810 isn't, so yes the K1 will be to most powerful chip on the mobile market, but im not optimistic about power consumption where the 810 will probably be much better when released.
Overall I think it will be a very good tablet keeping in mind that this tablet is designed for the average consumer and not for enthusiast.
edit:
front facing speakers (boomsound) will be awesome!
a bit bummed out on only 2gb ram, no qi charging, lowish dpi but am ordering it anyways...
do really like turbo charging, ac wifi, bt apt-x, htc design and big battery...
I hate that they went big with both the 6&9. The 7" fit perfectly for my needs. Oh well...
4x3, front facing speakers, and stock Android? WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE!?!?
This tablet will be a huge hit, despite the less-than-record-setting specs. I do wish it were cheaper, but I think people who do buy it will love it.
And it's time for 16x9 tablets to die. I hope this is the start!

4:3 is what I've been looking for in a tablet as one of my main uses for it as a medical professional is reading PDFs on the go. 16:9 or 16:10 is not the aspect ratio for reading letter-size PDFs, but it could be managed on the larger >10" tablets. Up to this point, the iPad was the best device for consuming PDFs, but now I have another choice on the market to take a look at.

I too have been waiting for a 4/3 android option without resorting to cheapo Chinese tablets without after sale service. And to those who will explain you that 16/9 is better for movies, that is a very limited point of view in my opinion : how do iPad users do ? I mostly watch movies on my tablet in my bed, with other lights off or very dimmed, so I just can't see the bezel anyway and will gladly have a much better format for books and Internet consumption !
It's not THAT different from most other phones, but I like the size.
I hope it's dual core and not quad core so it's finally worth investing for real.
What I like:
- Tegra K1 - 'nuff said
- Android apps will automatically compile to 64bit when installed on it. The beauty of Dalvik/ART :')
- 4:3 screen - FINALLY an android tablet for working people. Working with PDFs and documents will be an absolute joy with this.
- Android updates
Cons:
- Limited storage -- what's the point of having all that power if you don't have enough storage for content to make use of it. HD games and videos use a LOT of space.
Even Apple realised that and dropped $100 off 64 and 128GB models
- eMMC 4.51 -- which peaks at 200MB/s is significantly slower than other flagships. My iPhone 5S gets over 360MB/s read speeds in benchmarks.. SSD-speeds really.
- 2GB RAM, unlikely to be a problem in the near future.
- Too expensive for what it has to offer.
All in all, I think its the best android tablet on the market now. Sad to see it out powered by the iPad Air 2 only a day after release though the difference is only minimal.
Can't wait to get mine

If this video is truth... (i don't watched it because i am on 2g) ONLY 1GB RAM? I GONNA KILL SOMEONE NOW. Motorola thinks we are in 2012 and ship phones with 1 GB of RAM is a normal thing. The processor needs to be AT LEAST a 64-bit one, and it needs to be more than a Snapdragon 410, maybe a 615.

Yeah it's ridiculous
The screen resolution is the same, Quad cortex a53 @ 1,36GHz 64bit, adreno 306 (I think it's a Snapdragon 410), 13 Mpix camera, LTE..

Yeah, if the GPU is an Adreno 306, the CPU is a Snapdragon 410, so the new Moto G3 is a copy-paste, 5" version of the new Moto E 4G. God my next phone will be a Nexus again.

I think I'll rather buy a used Moto X 2nd.
Lol only 1gb ram in 2015. If this gonna happen it will flop not like moto g ot moto g 2nd
These specs can't be right surely? The Moto E 4G already outperforms the G, so can't this possibly be an even lower end model?
Moto G 1st- Snap 400
Moto G 2nd-Snap 400
Moto G 3rd-Snap 410~ which is more or less a 400 , but a 64 bit version.
These kind of lame specs are okay if it was Q1-Q3 of 2014. Now, it doesnt really make sense of having a sub 100-120$ phone spec(MOTO E 4G, Redmi,Lenovo A700).
My next phone will probably be a nexus(if its under 450$)
If this is true, what a disappointment.
2 years an basically no evolution?
If the specs in the video is to be believed looks like they are killing the MotoG .. Part of some corporate strategy .

The 13mp cam with dual led flash is a nice upgrade for this gen, and a 5mp front isn't bad. But the processor only being a snapdragon 410 is disappointing. It should be a 610 at the least, but a 615 to make it stand out. Other phones at the 180-200 price have it, and 2GB ram. Since that's a prototype that leaked I'm hopeful it'll have better specs when official

I doubt they'll change it.
Perhaps the aim is to keep this phone as cheap as possible. Sure, you can gradually bump the specs up, but then you're near £200 and away from your initial target of £100-125 (or whatever).
It's funny that the 4G Moto E outperforms the Moto G, but the G is still the nicer phone for a lot of reasons (camera, dual speakers, screen etc) so perhaps people will value an even better camera over better performance when their needs are going to be quite moderate.
I think that even now, Snapdragon 400 offers a good performance for most things, along with good battery life.
That's not to say I wouldn't like more, but perhaps Motorola knows what it's doing (and how this will fit around other devices it plans to launch).
Well you can get all the specs we wanted from the 3rd gen Moto G in the £125 Vodafone Smart ultra 6 (unlock code for £3-4), a Moto G with similar specs could have still released at the £145 starting price of the 2nd gen and with things like front facing speakers, factory unlocked and far more potential for better support with OS updates would have been the much better buy, and if they didn't want to go to 5.5 inch screen they could have kept the 5 inch screen they are using now the pixel density is more than good enough and saved some pennies there and that would greatly help with battery life too.
I got it ! Motorola Will Give 2 variants of Moto G 2nd Gen
8 GB version with 1 GB RAM
16 GB with 2 GB RAM
we had only saw 8 GB version both on the leaked video and Flipkart leaked information !
As all the Companies are making 2 variants of Smartphone ! Moto Will also do it !

i really like the performance so far but 2 small qualms
1. camera is not actually as good as i expected it to be. its better than my previous phone (iphone 4) but not as good as i expected given the specs
2. battery life is terrible. i can see from the android battery log app that this is due to the device barely going to sleep.. i get like 7-8 hours of battery life per day with max 30 min screen time, my iphone 4 in contrast i would charge every 2 days or so. need to root the device to use apps that could help me determine which service is keeping it awake which sucks.. don't really want to void my warranty just yet!
Does anybody know specifically what MicroSD cards are supported?
UHS-I?
UHS-II?
All I have managed to find is MicroSDXC.

Did you just say 30 mins screen time? That is TOO less. Turn of location services and turn off "Scanning Always Available" under Wifi>Advanced Settings.
Also, turn off STAMINA. Go through another cycle and see if it improves

All Z1 ~ Z5 max. at 40MB/s read or write limited by the card reader chip which Sony used.

thanks for your suggestion last 2 days i've done full battery cycle per day, stamina mode not in use at all and both location services and those wifi options i have had switched off since the day i got the phone (almost 1 week now).
today i have tried this https://docs.google.com/presentatio...F7z06_ysl1kUKME4/edit#slide=id.g25a03f28e_013 to help me enable root access to use wakelock detector. from this it was revealed that some 'calendar storage' app and 'sony tasks' app are causing my device to stay awake the full time. device taken off charger 9hrs 46min and awake for 9hrs 16min.. that explains why its feeling warm and using so much battery. my next challenge now is to figure out how to actually resolve this error now that i know what is causing it.. have just a few days left until i leave for an overseas trip for a month (the real reason that i upgraded to this phone, for nice camera and waterproof ability). any suggestions on that please?
thanks

Hi. Thanks for this. Is this really true? is 40 MB/s enough for 4k video? I suppose it is useless to buy a faster sd card... I wanted to get UHS-II, root my z5 and then merge the internal and external memories - plus add another 4gb of ram.

Yes it's all true(not sure about X Compact), 40MB/s = 320Mbit/s ....
Any UHS-I U3 is enough for 40MB/s. I recommend Sandisk since it got the best compability with Sony in my experiences, Samsung is great too.
How to add another 4GB of ram? you plan to change the ram module physically?

he meant with ROOT you can do swap file with fast SD\INTERNAL MEMORY
i did it with my previous sony
it helped alot with heavy apps (i had 512MB to 1512MB)
two main cons
1.even with UHS card is still slower then actual ram (maybe sImilar speed to Zram)
you'll feel it while stuff loading and switch between background apps you didnt close
2.it kill the SD card alot faster (happend to me, my 32GB died after 1year(+\-) flash it like SSD\SD goes by "life writes"
soon we will have to do this heavy games like CSR2 taking 1.6 RAM it closed everything even my home screen had 200MB free when , another 200MB and the app would be force closed
add swapRAM on SD, can fix this
sorry for english
Before CPU speeds lowered of course.
So the specs you have, are all before the multiple CPU throttling attempts, to stop the heat and lag.
What is the new speed, is there away to tell, how much they throttle the CPU??
Would SONY have false advertised if the speeds are not what they should be?
About specifications on this phone, Sony advertise it with 2700mAh battery, and reviewers report back with fantastic batterylife; that's a bit of a stretch when it comes to my phone.
Yes, it all depends on the user and how many and what kind of apps are running etc. However, last night I stumbled over the battery health test for my phone - *#*#7378423#*#* - then choose Battery Health test, and it will show you wether or not your battery is healthy/needs to be swapped to a new one. It also shows us the actual size of the battery.
Sony advertised Z5C with 2700mAh, mine shows 2455mAh. If this is not due to degradation over time (which it MIGHT be, anyone???), then it is not really acceptable. I'm not techsavvy enough to know how much those 245mAh will pan out in overall batterylife, maybe someone here are?
Is this just me, or do you guys suffer from the same thing?
Have a nice day

Well, the battery is ok. When I use mobile data I only get max of 2hrs SoT (2hrs to 3hrs I guess). But when I use wi-fi instead, SoT can reach more than 6hrs.

Oh.
It looks like I'm gonna have to purchase a powerbank since I used mobile data most of the time if I am gonna buy this phone.
How about root access, did you able to root it?
By the way I'm from Philippines too.
You can check my screenshots for reference of my current battery usage from 100%.?
No, I haven't tried rooting it yet and I don't have any plans. Hehe...? I bought mine from MemoXpress SM North EDSA and it's a Mediatek variant which comes with 2gb of RAM, 13mp rear cam, 5mp front-facing cam, 16gb internal and Marshmallow out of the box.?

Mediatek is also a popular chip set used by some large smatphone manufacturers and is been doing great contribution to developers since there were many mediatek devices with a number of custom rom have been developed. And it is too early to expect updates at the moment maybe later next month ?.
I'm still comparing this device with lenovo a7000+, asus zenfone max.
Maybe you can help me decide ?
Hopefully LG will give more updates to K10.?
I don't know abt Lenovo but I was choosing between this and Zenfone Max as well. What i like abt Max is its battery but honestly I do notnlike the UI of ASUS.? also the screen of K10 is better than Max's. When it comes to camera functionality, Max is better as it offers more modes though not sure abt the image quality. Is Max a midrange?

Definitely max is in mid range device. I agree with the elegant design of k10 i hope that the battery can be replace by higher capacity.. I'm planning to buy this phone on may.
Just received mine 2 days ago, bought on eBay from Taiwan (needed the 700mhz freq for Telstra woohoo).
Going by CPU-Z mine is an Octacore MediaTek MT6753 1.30GHz with GPU Mali - T720, 2GB ram.
For the price $249au - posted, its an awesome phone. I do agree with some reviews about the dullish screen, but its not a dealbreaker for me.
4G Telstra works fantastic, havent taken a lot of camera shots as the weather has been average here atm.
I did an AnTutu benchmark, 35516.
Antutu and CPU-Z pics below..
I've LTE version and the chipset is MT6753 with 2GB RAM. It comes with marshmallow. Couldn't find time to test battery life. I'll try to build CM13 as soon as possible. Mine model is K430TR.
EDIT: @firthy , what's that new button on navbar? I don't have it.

Hi, I have 2 questions for people who have the DSY variant. Can you put 128gb micro sd on it? I read the spec on the net that it only supports up to 32 gb. Is it right?
Also, is this mediatek chipset faster than snapdragon 800? Can someone tell me as I am really new about this.
thanks ....
I'll be getting it in 2 weeks... as I already pre order it...

It says on GSMArena that it's expandable up to 32gb of SD card only but some users say it can read 64gb SD card. Not sure with the 128gb one.
I am using the Mediatek variant and I can say that it's very smooth. Not sure with the Snapdragon variant.
