Phone will not deep sleep below ~40% - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Here is a puzzle. Overall problem statement is that when the battery level is below 40%, the battery drains quickly with minimum wakelocks. In other words, the phone does not "deep sleep" when battery percentage is below 40%.
My definition of "deep sleep" is battery drain slows to less than 1%/hr and this is usually shown in the battery graph as a near horizontal line.
Phone: Samsung i337m (Telus)
ROM: Kitkat 4.4.2 NE1 Odin flash firmware, so everything is NE1.
Other info: Towelrooted, Xposed Framework installed
Below is a screenshot dump of the battery info, BBS, and Wakelock Detector (WLD).
Observe that BBS and WLD are logging since last unplugged at ~1.5 hrs ago. So when you look at the battery info screenshot, please take into account the last 1.5 hr time on the right hand side only. If you look carefully, there isn't too many wakelocks. This is confirmed by BBS and WLD.
Only exception is in the last SS in WLD showing NILS program keeping the screen on for 8 min & 32 sec, which doesn't really make sense.
Check out the last SS for the Poor Battery Drain batch to show that battery drain is much higher at 1.2%/hr over a 7 hour period. This is compared to 0.7%/hr over a similar 7 hour period. The only difference is the starting battery level.
Good Battery Drain SS posted for comparison purposes and to illustrate my point
Based on the above, my only theory is that the battery calibration is off such that below 40% the battery has drained much more than indicated....
Any other ideas or suggestions to fix this problem?

Increased Battery Life

I am running CM10.1.3.1 with the nitest 7/20/2013 kernel and FC19 modem, on an Onite 1900 mAH battery.
I used many of the tips in this post;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2357417
10 hours overnight with minimal usage, my battery now drops to 78% and shows 4 days 15 hours of similar usage before the battery will be drained fully. I've never, since buying the phone new, had better than 26 hours of stand-by time show up with a fully charged battery. I'm now showing 5 days.
Of course, screen usage is still the big impact, so actually using the phone drains it just as fast, but it is nice to know that, if I am not using it, I don't have to keep it plugged in all the time now.
I could be completely wrong about this but...
Have you been rebooting your phone? From what I've read rebooting the phone can throw off the battery stats. Basically the battery storage and usage is all the same its just the reporting thats off. I'm guessing battery stats get readjusted over time if the phone remains powered on.

Very high battery drain when IDLE

Hello xda,
I've noticed a somewhat increase in battery drain the last couple of days. I charged it up to 100% and let it discharge overnight, a whopping 25% battery was drained in 8 hours of standby modus.
Now, I've installed BBS and I've come to the conclusion that system_server is taking up 70% battery when idle.
See attachment: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8uz34hblyl1hwwz/Screenshot_2014-08-28-10-13-06.png?dl=0
Now i've googled for numberous hours but can't get a real fix for this. I've already resetted it alot and I keep having this battery drain. is there anything else i can try?
Edit: Im running stock rooted with CF autoroot 4.4.2

Poor batter life

I changed from Note 3 to s 6 edge plus recently
The battery drops 5% per hour overnight when not in use. If I go to bed with less than 40% battery at night I am sure to wake up with my phone switched off in the morning.
When in use with screen on, the battery drips one percent every two minutes. This is the worst battery life I have ever seen in a phone. I was a long loyal customer of samsung and this is my last samsung phone ever.
Extremely disappointed
Please post your battery stats ? so we can have a better understanding of your problem. I suggest you install 'Doze' which should stop unnecessary apps from connecting to the internet and causing your phone to awake from deep sleep.
Dear Akbar 11
Heres the battery stats....is it normal?
I had the same issue, and as far as I managed to find out, it is a bug in Samsung's kernel. Flashing Arter97 kernel solved the issue for, but do post battery stats from SmartManager. If it says 'Android' or 'Android OS', then you have the same problem many of us do.
I don't think it's a kernel problem. My android OS is very low 4%. Like zoolok said post your battery stats from settings, battery, battery usage
I have the same problem. Battery was great before I flash custom rom. After going back to stock I have big battery draining. I must stay on custom rom. With Audax rom and Skyhigh kernel i have great battery life.
You have either messed up something big or you have an app in the background that is eating up your battery like no tomorrow.
And the reason i say that is because i recently got this battery life on my Galaxy S6 edge+.
And this was taken 2 days ago.
Here i use the CRISSCROSS ROM, AudaxPro Kernel, Greeinify and Samsung's own 'Appoptimizing' feature (same as Doze in Android 6.0).
So my battery life is pretty awesome.
i have problem whit battery lose 25% when i sleep
This is a usual day with s6 edge plus
Any help?

i have this problem battery ... if u fixed it tell me how?
Well I was expecting Google Play Services to be eating your battery (which is quite common) but it looks like your Andriod OS is eating the most battery. I would uninstall Facebook and use the web version it always helps with the ram and battery furthermore, turn off location if you are not using it and check accounts which are being synced. These are the only tips I can give you as I have never seen Android OS drain so much battery.
Since a few days Google Play Store is eating up my battery: I go to sleep with 100% batt and wake up with 50%, if I check batt stats on top I have play store at 45%, with 5h active a d 2h of CPU.
Follows Android system at 5%.
Going crazy why...

You've charged your phone 4 times during that day. I can't see what's the interesting part here.

Sudden dip in standby battery life on grouper

Hi guys,
I got a 32 gig grouper off Ebay in July 2015. From the get go, I was impressed with the battery life, and it got even better when I went the custom rom route. My main use case is streaming movies or TV in the evening for a few hours, and otherwise leaving it in standby/airplane mode to conserve battery life until the next viewing. Typically overnight, the battery sips power -- maybe 2-3% lost in 7-8 hours.
Over the past month, though, I've seen a considerable dip in the standby/airplane mode time in particular. Now, overnight I seem to lose 10-15%. I realize batteries have a lifespan, but I figured I'd see a more gradual drop?
I tend to only have 4-5 streaming apps on the tablet at a time. Currently I'm running CM11 stable, but I observe this standby battery drop in all roms -- I've gone as far back as 4.1.2 (stock + unrooted) and all the way up to CM13 unofficial. I used better battery stats/GSAM but never really caught any wakelocks that would account for that much power lost.
At a loss for what to try next. I can capture screencaps if it helps, but they never really told me anything (perhaps someone else would get more info from them.) Any help is appreciated!
Also, my on screen time feels about the same. I've drained the battery a few times with some streamed video, and I get around 4-6 hours. It's the standby time that has dropped off considerably.

Get Kernel Aduitor or a CPU managament program and see if your tablet is going into deep sleep or if it's still at another clock frequency or if a program is keeping it up.
Thanks for the reply!
My N7 is in deep sleep about 80% of the time on a typical charge, the other 20% being used for on-screen usage (video streaming and browsing typically). It's maddening -- I now lose 15-20% on standby/airplane mode overnight. I don't see any flags in better battery stats or GSAM battery monitor. Most apps are greenified, too, and location services/other potential draining factors are disabled.
Is it just a bad battery?

[Q] Is this battery usage normal?

I'm having 3 hours Screen-On-Time, and while I think it's "acceptable" I read about some people with 5-8 hours of SoT. I was having some problems with battery drains on Ressurrection Remix and Temasek and the best rom I found for me was Purify. With it, I don't get crazy battery drains and I finally had 3 SoT again, but I find it strange that on the battery usage chart the screen percentage is closely followed by the Android Operating system, not only that, Purify's developer said that he can get 8 hours of SoT (For me this is just impossible).
I'm using Better Battery Stats and GSam battery Monitor to check but there are some stats that I don't know how to interpret, as I don't know if it's normal system usage or a wakelock.
Thx for reading and thx for helping.
