[Q] SD Card blank or has unsupported filesystem - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
I have a Galaxy S5 G900T running the AllianceRom 3.1 made for G900F. I use an external SD Card SanDisk 16GB and since yesterday I never had a problem.
So, now I'm experiencing this error: "SD Card blank or has unsupported filesystem" on Notification Panel. When I click on it, android asks me if I want to format the card, I click OK, and at the end the same problem occurs.
Things I already tried to do:
1) I tested the SD Card into another Galaxy S5 and it's running OK without the problem;
2) I formatted the SD card (full format) on a windows computer. Windows recognizes it, and it's running OK;
3) I checked the file vold.fstab on /etc folder and it has the same content as another Galaxy S5 that is running OK the SD card;
4) I re-flashed the AllianceRom 3.1;
[EDIT 1]
5) Tried to wipe the SD Card using TWRP Recovery (as image 1 attached)
6) Tried to partitioning using TWRP Recovery (as image 2 attached)
[EDIT 2]
7) I bought another SD Card, a Samsung 64GB and when I insert it on device I don't get this error, but also not able to mount, it doesn't even recognizes the SD card.
p.s. I searched a lot on XDA, even on Google, and those was the possible solutions I've found, but didn't work for me.
Does someone experienced this problem and was able to fix?
Does anyone knows another alternative that could work?
Thanks in advance

Copy the content of the sdcard to the pc and format the card on the phone itself, that should fix the issue.

The strange thing is that I'm able to access the ext SD Card on TWRP Recovery, as you can see on the image attached... I even copied a file (backup.txt) into it.

Have you tried another SD card in your phone? EDIT: Nevermind this bit
When you plug the SD card into your handset (do it while it's off) Does the SD Storage show anything?
You could try formatting it in another handset if you have the chance then try plugging it in.
Are you using stock Sammy firmware? Or have you installed a custom kernel? Could be one of those playing havoc with your device if so, back up and revert to stock if you can, retest the SD in there.
Test to see if you can retrieve data from the SD card, i've found that although SD cards show up in windows, when I attempt to copy data to the PC it fails, when I say fail I mean it stops progressing and doesn't copy, particular files appear corrupt.
You could also do a chkdsk /f /r via windows on the SD card, or even a general error check.
chances are one of these things will be the culprit, if none and it's still working in another phone and other cards are working in your device then i'm stumped.
Good luck

I would try philz recovery, i had all kinds of problems with twrp on my note 3 and s5 until switching. Not knocking twrp this is just my experience

Hello mate,
Thanks for answering
When you plug the SD card into your handset (do it while it's off) Does the SD Storage show anything?
I get the same problem: SD Card blank or has unsupported filesystem
You could try formatting it in another handset if you have the chance then try plugging it in
I tested the SD card on another device and it's working fine, also on my windows pc
Are you using stock Sammy firmware? Or have you installed a custom kernel? Could be one of those playing havoc with your device if so, back up and revert to stock if you can, retest the SD in there.
I formatted my device right now and installed Samsung stock firmware with stock kernel. I also tried to get back to stock recovery, then installed CWM and TWRP, but the same problem
I'm starting to think this is a hardware problem, because I tried everything and nothing happened.

Quite an odd one that, i'm a little stumped.
did you try error checking on windows? OR even a format in a different handset? OR a different card in your phone to see if to see if it reads?
On the other hand if the phone isn't that old, return it, 28 day swap should be good if you're in time, otherwise it's back to sammy.
sorry I can't be of more help m8.

Same problem with GalaxyS5 and 64 GB card
Have you found a solution to the OP?
I have an S5 too and it's doing exactly the same. I tried a 64GB Sandisk and Samsung cards, both work flawlessly in PC, MAC and even a different phone. WTH???? My 32GB Sandisk works well in the GAlaxy S5 too, I am about to see if it blends....

Same here. My phone already went in for repair for this and the front camera ring falling issue. Mine was preordered and shipped at launch. It worked a few weeks and now has stopped again. Simply won't recognize any SD cards. I tried an old 2GB, a Kingston 16GB, a Lexar 32GB from my GoPro, and a Sandisk 64GB. All cards work elsewhere, but my S5 never indicates anything is inserted. This is my first Samsung, and it might be my last. I never experienced issues like this on an HTC.

Any progress here? I just got a sweet 64g card Samsung because my others have worked well BUT...
S5 Blank SD card of death. ....

[Q] Frustrating SD Card issue - not the normal

Note - this is not the "Damaged SD card Issue" i never received ths warning.
Up until last night, my New S4 was running great with my Samsung 64gb sd card...had a ton of programs etc. The thing is, the card was also encrypted by company security policy. Prior to flashing to a new rom i tried to decrypt the card, the the system credientials were locked and wouldn't let me (after removing accounts etc). I don't want to talk about ways i could have decrypted - let's just say i went into the flash with an encrypted card.
Wiped cache, delvik cache, and factory reset
now i don't believe this cleans the internal (SD or storage) as this is where i flashed from
Everything flashed successfully and the new rom is up and running.
Except now i can't access my SD card on my Galaxy. Mounting only results in the device saying "it's safe for removal". I can't even format on this device, but i can on a galaxy s3 and my laptop. And the card works in all those places just fine. The card won't even mount in CWM....EVERY time I insert the card, I'm just told the card being checked for errors and immediately goes to "card is safe for removal"
anyone know what might be going on? This is driving me nuts here!
Just tried reflashing again, this time clearing internal memory too...installing rom from a diffetent external SD card and still no luck. Same result as above.
Again SD card works in all other devices other than s4.
Also note I am using a T MO rom on att device with new kernal. I don't think that should matter though

Had this issue. I used my 64gb card with the stock rom. I flashed CM10.1 this morning onto it and CM10.1 wouldn't read it. Took it out, put it in a SD card adapter and read it on my laptop, copied all contents off. Put it back in my S4, formatted it. It worked. Put card back in laptop, copied content over, worked fine on the S4.
It's a formatting issue. Just back up your data via another device, then format the card in your S4 and youll be fine.
Problem is I can't get s4 to the point where it will format the card. After I attempt to mount it...keeps reverting back to ready to remove message...as if it doesn't want to know the card is there.

Well. Try formatting it in another system. Take it out copy your files off, then format it. (Windows My Computer, right click the flash card, Format). Mac, Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility Select the flash drive, go to erase. Linux, use Gparted. Install via sudo apt-get install gparted if your on a ubuntu/debian based distro.. Then try it in your S4 and see what happens. Maybe the partition got messed up and the S4 is goofing up when it goes to read it, or check partition table or something in a way where other systems might be okay with it still.

Thanks for the input. I did try as you recommended. Even going so far as to format in a galaxy s3- successfully ....a digital camera - successfully ...and my computer systems successfully....all able to read write and format.....galaxy s4 just doesn't seem to care....

Interesting. Well eliminated anything with the card itself or formating.
Have you tried any other microSD's in your S4?
If not I suggest trying that and see what's going on.
If it DOES work then it might be a issue with the card. If it doesn't, something with your S4.
It's either hardware (the microSD card reader is bad somehow) or software (Something in your ROM is messed up). If you want to troubleshoot it to the fullest extent you can do a full factory restore, wiping your phone completely, and loading stock firmware again and wiping \Data partition, as well as cache and see what happens. That would eliminate any software issue.
I have tried other cards and they all work fine. S4 can do everything with these cards. Format...mount...unmount....etc...
Just seems to be this one card in this one device....both card and device work well outside of each other...

There's your problem then. That brand card or something, or that particular card may have something funny going on with it.
I had the same exact thing happen to me yesterday. I was also having issues with my WiFi not working either.
I ended up doing a complete wipe of my S4 in cwm, Odin to stock, updating my software via settings and re-rooting. After doing that my WiFi worked and it would read the 64GB SD card I had.
Luckily, I had a nandroid backup from just a few days prior I was able to revert back to.

Aokp/aosp/cm roms/kernels don't support the exfat format.. So format the SD card to FAT32 to fix the issue check this out.. Lots of threads on this.

Your 64gb sd card is Exfat and a lot of kernels and roms do not support this. Format it to Fat32 and all should be good. But backup everything on your sd card before you do it
don't know how far you have gotten on this, but
i usually use sdformatter from web. i do a "full erase on", takes awhile, but cleans card well and always solved any card issues i had--
Final Solution Atrix 4g to the rescue
Finally put the SD card in my old atrix 4G and reformatted twice and now the card works!
Can't for the life of me figure out why nothing else could format the car sufficiently.
I struggled with this as well just now with my SanDisk 64gb card on my Verizon s4 running Jelly Beans... Solution was to format the card fat32. I did this by executing this file from the command line and issuing 'fat32format x:' after mounting the card obviously. Here is the file fat32format.exe It works perfect now Note: Don't format the card again on your phone or it will end up exFat and the phone will reject the card again.

[Q] Phone no longer recognizes SD Card

Hello XDA Community,
I recently encountered quite a frustrating problem. I bought a brand new 64GB kingston microSD card yesterday. I was running stock android 4.4.2 on my SGH-1337m device. I recently flashed the "Kangakat" rom and although everything works perfectly, the only error I can't seem to fix is this SD issue. By flashing this ROM, my device model is now "GT-I9505G" 4.4.4 rather than SGH-1337m.
Upon entering the SD card it first says "preparing SD card" and then seconds later says "SD card safe to remove" unable to mount to the device.
I have tried many solutions offered on this forum but have't been able to find a successful one. I have tried to mount through settings, take out the SD card reboot then enter it again, the SD card IS placed in correctly, and the SD card does work, it is not corrupt (connects to computer perfectly).
I appreciate all your help,
Wasbo.

Sounds to me like your rom or kernel doesn't like exfat formatting which your sdcard probably has.
I would suggest reformatting as fat32 or finding a kernel that works.

Thank you very much for your help saj. I'm going to give that a try later today, I just have two follow up questions. First, do you recommend a kernel that is very effective? And second, my phone have been typically only connecting to 3G even though it's set to LTE preferred, could this be because of the kernel as well?

1) Read this thread and you'll find this issue has been discussed. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2307779 See the last post for a compatible kernel. Be sure to get the right kernel for your device.
2) Not likely connected to kernel but I could be wrong. Are you sure there is LTE coverage where you are located?

Even I have the same problem I called customer care and they told me to visit service centre. I also tried factory reset but no use
Same here. I tried format the SD card in a Mac and a PC, tried again with other cards, but I have the same (frustrating) result. The only thing I didn't try yet was restoring the device, and I don't know if is a good idea (seems didn't working for any other person with the same problem).

Hi did you get that resolved?
I am having the same problem. I was using my old MicroSD Card. After the update for Android 6.0.1 it appeared a message saying that the card was corrupted or something like that and i might need to format it. I try to do so and and error appeared while formatting it as Internal so i remove the SD card and restart the cellphone and tried to do it at least as External Storage but i got the same error. So i bought a brand new MicroSD Card Class 10 32 Gb and had the same issue. I did a hard reset and start over and i have the same outcome.
All my SD Cards that i tried to use got recognized on my friends cellphones. Moto G Turbo, Moto G 2nd i got a Moto X play. The difference between them and i is t hat i have Android 6.0.1 and they 6.0.
Does somebody found the solution to this issue? . Which version of Android do you have 6.0 or 6.0.1. Everything got screwed up after the update.
Additional Details:
1. After the error appears the SD card is not being read anymore even if i eject it and insert it again. So i erased the Media Storage Cache and External Extorage Cache, restart the cellphone and put back the SD card again and i got recognized with the message that i need to format it. I try too many time reproducing this issue and i always got the same frustrating result. The SD cards were formatted on Mac and PC and also other Motorola phones and Same ****.
2. Called Motorola Services Desk on USA and LATAM. One of them told me to restore the cellphone to brand new state. I did it and same ****.
3. Am so sad for this not much information available
The same issue is there in many custom ROMs as well. I feel it's got something to do with 6.0.1 rather than the sd card itself.

No. I just bought the Moto X play. I was working fine with an Old SD Card. After i upgrade to 6.0 to 6.0.1 the SD Card is not read anymore and showing errors while format it internal or externally. I bought a faster card class 10 and same error. The thing is my friends with no update can read my cards without problems using same cellphones.
My sd card went crazy too after 6.0.1 though after a few tries I did manage to save everything on it into my pc using the sd card adapter. Then I did the slow format in Windows and put it back into the phone. So far it seems working fine.

I will try on a pc...did that on osx with Parallels Desktop...no go!
I have had the same issue as some above. Went wrong two weeks ago when the latest OTA became available from Motorola. The moment the phone restarted I received a warning that the microSD was not formatted, which had been previously set up as internal storage. I am 100% certain that it was the upgrade to 6.0.1 that did this, and not anything physical. I've tried approx 20 different methods to try to format it, both in the now-rooted X Play and on my PC, and even when it appears to be successful it actually isn't. Windows 10's diskpart will show the partitions, whilst most will not. It's as if the card has somehow become write-protected. The 128gb card was not cheap, so if anyone has had the same issue and has a solution, please give any tips you can!
Hello any solution for this ?
I'm willing to try and flash the 6.0 stock. Reporting here asap!
I need a fix for thisssssss! SD Card is not garbage now is it?
no way
sorry guys, bad news! I downgraded to Stock Android 6.0, it didn't fix the problem.
will try with a brand new sdcard...to see if the mxp is somehow very picky...or more simply the sdcard reader is damaged
hi guys!
i have the same issue with new 64 Gb microsd card. did anyone get the decision?

Galaxy note 3 doesnt recognize my SD Card

Hello all,
I have been using Galaxy note 3 for the last 3 years or so, have rooted it, installed AOSP and stock ROMs (including the latest Note 7 ports) on it. So I have a fair understanding of how the phone works, and am able to work with errors on a very comfortable basis (sometimes, with help from other XDA members as well).
Now, here's where I am stuck. I was running a Note 7 port ROMs (Phronesis and Magma-NX), and also ran an AOSP ROM. Since last week, my phone has not been able to recognize my SD Card (I have two cards: one, a 32gb card, and the other a 128gb card) on either of the stock or AOSP ROMs. It says: Corrupted. So I begin to format the card (both of them) on the phone itself, and I keep getting this message when I try to format my SD Card via phone:
thread binder_7 gave up waiting for partitionPublic after 180000ms
The SD Cards format properly on my laptop. The end result is my phone doesn't recognize any memory cards, and I basically end up working with the internal storage of 32gb. I havent encountered this error before, and I have no clue about what to do. I have tried googling it, and Google gives me a result for partitionPrivate and not partitionPublic. I dont know if these are the same things or not, and in either case, I absolutely dont know
what to do.
Can anyone suggest/guide as to what should I do?
I had an issue where my phone wouldn't see an SD card unless it was given a name when attached to a PC, might be nothing to do with it but could be worth a try?

Sorry buddy, but didn't quite understand when you said" given it a name". How and what did you do to name your SD Card? I will definitely try anything to make it work
I have same problem and I never fix it. I follow so many guides from Google without luck, seems that my N3 decide to not read external memory any more.

Hey buddy, in that case, what did you do? Did you end up using a lot of cloud based storage on your note 3?

Yes, I use Google Photo app for my pictures and videos, Spotify 4 music, large files like Twrp and Titanium backups stored on external hard drive.

I guess that is probably working good for you; do you have your photos and videos setup to be directly posted on the Cloud then?
Definitely, you have various options how to upload directly, with mobile plans, only with WiFi, only on charge.
Awesome, thanks buddy.. Did you try to have someone look up the SD Card slot to see if it was damaged or if it needed a replacement?

Hello all,
I have been using Galaxy note 3 for the last 3 years or so, have rooted it, installed AOSP and stock ROMs (including the latest Note 7 ports) on it.

Just to check, have you tried to convert your sd cards into internal storage (adoptable storage) before the problem occurs ?
@zlazaar I'm not sure bro.. All I did was just copied one app from my internal memory to the external SD Card. But I didn't jot try to convert Tele external SD into an internal memory.. Do you think that's what the issue is here?

Can you try this please :
- Format one of your sd cards using your PC (use this recommended tool)
- Make sure you choose FAT32 as file system before format
- Check if you got the correct total size of the formatted sd card
- Shutdown your phone, put your sdcard, boot directly to recovery
if the recovery is able to recognize the sd card with the correct total size, then you don't have a hardware failure.

When you connect it to a PC, when viewing My Computer as it used to be called, you can see all of the drives, C:, D: etc, on that screen if you right click above your SD card drive select rename, it should be under removable drives. A long shot but also an easy one so worth a punt.

I totally agree, sd card volume must have a name.
Thank you

@zlazaar Hey buddy, so I downloaded the SD Formatter, and did a quick format (should I have done full Format - if yes, which one - Erase or overwrite). I also tried the Format Size Adjustment ON and OFF.
I have 2 SD Cards, one 128gb and the other a 32gb. The SD Formatter formatted the 128gb card as an exFAT, and the it formatted the 32gb card as a FAT32. However, TWRP still didn't recognize either of the cards. I still dont have the cards running on the phone..

Samsung SD Card corrupted | All Kernels

Hey guys, I've run into a little of an issue. I flashed various kernels on my AZMPM with stock android 8.1 , however none of them is correctly supporting my 64GB Samsung Sd card. It just says corrupted. When I format it by pressing the pop up,it says SD card ready ,but then again it says SD card corrupted. the first time I popped in a 16GB Samsung SD card ,it gave the same error, then I formatted it on my phone itself,it gave an erro,I popped out the card and popped it back into the phone and Voila! No problem! Everything is fine. However the same is not happening with my 64GB card, it just says SD card corrupted! fix now! I fix it then again error.
Please help.

1. Try reformatting the sd card via pc with correct format
2. Check if the card works correctly in some other phone
3. If the card gives you same issue in other phone then kindly replace it.
4. All the kernels out there are almost stable for daily driver now so maybe its not a kernel issue now.
5. Try flashing your stock firmware again, maybe it would work.

Thank you for replying ,but there is no issue with the memory card. I have gone back to stock rom plus kernel, with the 20th Sept OTA through TWRP file, now there is no issue with the card. Am I doing something wrong? I just flashed a kernel on top of the stock rom through twrp that gave me max clock speeds of 2208mhz on the bigger cores and 1800 something on the smaller cores. Everything was fine but the memory card.

Even i cant explain how this happens to you bro, but remember to wipe cache/dalvik cache even after flashing a new kernel or rom (not necessary for kernels but as a clean & safe side i recommend )
