Android is NOT released. The only thing which is released is a SDK.

Android 4.4 (KitKat) and above comes with a new screen recording feature.
If your phone is not rooted, you can do it using adb shell (from Android SDK).
If your device is rooted, you probably can issue the adb command from your app using SU.

Well, I have one Android unit with platform RK3066, and I could see in several website, it is Android Auto apk rolling over there... I tried install it, but the apk it is not recognize by the system... Right now is 4.4.4, "update_4_4_4_RK3066_1024X600_7_MAL_14_05_2015"...
Where it is the problem? That RK3066 can't run it or nobody will make 5.0/5.1.x rom? Or other problem from the own system Android Auto?
