[Q] vold.fstab - Swapping Internal / External SD Card(s) - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I haven't found any info on the forums about this yet. Does anyone know how to/or have a modified vold.fstab for the stock TouchWiz rom?
I have a general idea on what to do, but I'd rather not attempt this one by myself!
Thanks in advance - zmag

That's not what he's talking about. He wants to use his extSdCard as his internal storage. I used that on my s4 with a 64gb class 10 with awesome results

Hehe well you're correct thatsupnow, but I did consider Link2SD Pro - but I would rather edit the vold.fstab directly (and correctly)
There's also an app on the play store (free) called Root External 2 Internal SD, but it looks like it was made for the GS3 - again, would rather edit the source than install another app.
I am using NextAppSDFix at the moment, until I install Xposed and use the Xposed mod (which I suppose is no different than using the app)
But I havent seen any modded vold.fstab files for the GS5 yet, which honestly is surprising to me. I figured someone would've had one by now...
Maybe there's a rom that has this already? and can be used on the stock ND2 rom? Any input on the subject is greatly appreciated. Just wanna use my 64gb card instead of having 10gb.
Thanks in advance! - zmag

Yeah man development has been pretty slow. I wonder if the mod for the s4 could be manipulated to work on the s5?

You didn't search very far if you didn't run smack into at least half a dozen forum threads detailing various ways to swap the internal and external SD cards. Not to mention threads that explain at length how to edit vold.fstab. However, while vold.fstab maps sysfs devices to filesystem mount points, it isn't a good idea to edit it directly as an update would easily break your mod..
A better method is to swap the internal and external SD cards is to employ a script to remount the two storage locations. Then transpose them using the -bind switch. A script to do this can be found here.
.

Ok, well I meant in the S5 forums - I didn't know that the S4 scripts applied at all.
Sorry for the trouble... I'm coming from an HTC Evo 4G LTE, I'm still getting acquainted with Samsung's file system.
I don't plan on updating from ND2 any time soon. If I do, I usually try and make a nandroid backup first just in case anything breaks on me.
Thanks again for the help!

my samsung s5 is not detecting the microsd
please help.
i tried in other cells the microsd and its working, and with a root software i can see that the cell read the microsd, but i cant use ir and i need more space in my cell.
or if someone please can copy and paste here the vold.fstab for the verizon samsung s5.
thanks

vold.fstab g900v
dev_mount sdcard /storage/sdcard1 auto /devices/msm_sdcc.2/mmc_host
Don't know if it helps

[Q] External SD Card problem in Thor's V14.2

Ok I have a Patriot Micro SD Card (16 GB Class 4) that the tablet does not read.
It does not show as External, or removable or nothing. I put it on my laptop and I can see it just fine.
I deleted everything from it and formatted it for FAT32 and still nothing. Anyone knows y this is happening?
I think its a problem with Thor's rom. I had the same problem and ended up restoring my previous rom because of Thor's rom not accessing the micro sd card.
Use ES File Manager to see the sd card. I found it under favourites (star icon) along the top. Thats wher I find the usb as well.
I am not running Thor's rom anymore but I read in his forums you need to rename External SD to Removable or something like that and then the rom will see it.

?????????WTF????
Post a link please, as I never had an issue, so please...
Maybe it was an app that needed a different naming convention.

Some custom ROMs mount their SDCards in a different manner than stock.
Some will be mnt/sdcard, some will be mnt/external sdcard, some will just be /sdcard.
Look for it, because it's there. I only played with that ROM for a few short minutes, but IIRC it's not mounted in the same place as Stock 3.2.
It's not mounted same as in stock HC. And I believe it's labeled as microSD. Don't have my tab on me to confirm, but yeah... had issues trying to find it at first too.

There ya go! Thanks Shaun, I knew it was a funky one, just couldn't remember where
does anyone know how to change this as it renders some apps unusable that don't have the ability to redirect to custom path. We should be able to change the mount as name right?

Why don't you go on tegraowners.com and post in Thors thread and he can probably answer your question.

Considering what I know about linux, I thought someone here in xdaDEV might know where to put something along the lines of "mount --bind olddirectory newdirectory" line. It doesn't do any good for this forum to receive posts to solution that are related directly to development on a forum dedicated to specific devices. Perhaps you might be right and I would get better answers on setting mount names on TOforum and not here at xda-developers.

It's nothing to do with that, and everything to do with Thor's ROM's not being a allowed on here, and discussion of them is generally frowned upon as flamewars usually ensue.
If you need support on one of his ROMs, then his site is where you have to go.
I do know it is kind of odd how sdcard is internal room?
and everything that you plug in is removable/ *
It confused my titanium backup to back up on device at first. had to change directory. I should probably check how recovery is backing up.
Then here is a another non thor thought. I have been experimenting with modifying the /etc/vold.fstab and chaing "dev_mount microsd /Removable/MicroSD" to "dev_mount microsd /mnt/externalsd"
From what I have read here in xda, I need to create that folder before hand at "/mnt/externalsd" using root explorer and changing permissions in "/mnt" "/ect" AND the file itself "/ect/vold.fstab" I have gotten vold to stick after reboot but not "/mnt/externalsd" I also think "drive mount" is interfering and setting mounts and would like to know where I might be able to find those settings. Any constructive non-redirectional thoughts are appreciated. I think Im on the right path but I know I'm missing something.

nope, that requires repartitioning so that the sizes are split differently in the internal memory...i don't think anyone cares about this as long as the phone supports 64GB external.... the method was used for reviving the superbricked phone a year ago on ICS smaller system partitions resulted in a successful booting rom but with less storage.
But is there any way for installing all app and games in micro sd like kernel perseus whick allow install all in microsd whatever app or game
Thanks!!!

I've had luck with the FolderMount, liked it and bought the full version. There's a thread for it in the themes and apps section
PS. You should open new threads in the right sections :good:
There was a mod on the S3 that swapped the internal and SD memory - i.e. it fooled the system in thinking the SD card was internal.
Give it time, im sure the mod will become available - you will probably need to root

AFAIK the trick was modifing the vold.fstab file in system/etc/ still i think its useless since the most space is set on internal sd and not the system swapping them makes your storage space even less than it already is...who wants that to happen ?
he can get a light ROM i've seen one in the forums calles biochemical TW i think not quite sure which is 800MB well stripped but still he can add what he needs only and not get to the crazy 1.5 GB system

[L7]Help with external/internal storage issue!

hi,
i have a rooted LG P700 with CM10.1 and CWM,
my issue is all my apps and system use sdcard0 (wich is part of internal storage) as external, while sdcard1 is ignored, most of the apps don't have settings to change save file location. in a few days, the 2gb of internal storage is filled, and moving all files by hand is a pain.
is there any way to swap the two storage locations that works on the P700? there seem to be plenty solutions for samsung phones... none for LG though...
i've tried editing the vold.fstab like i've seen in some tutorials, but it only renders the external SD unreadable, restoring the vold.fstab brings it back...
i could really use some help with this, i just bought an 8gb SDcard, to find it's useless
i appreciate any bit of info you could throw at me!
bump please?
if 2gb are full only with games, i can suggest to use "Directory Bind" apk, but only for games, i don`t have any ideas for others apps
i have mostly apps installed, and the kind that create their own files, like the camera app, that needs to place the files somewhere. thank you for the reply!
please, someone!
are there any methods to do this? as i said everywhere on the internet there is no solution for the p700. modifying vold.fstab works on most devices, not mine though... can someone adapt this solution to the p700?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2239289
i've attached the framework.jar file
i'm not good at all at scripting, tinkering, and i dont want to brick my phone. please!! i need your help!
:crying:
i don't believe no other L7 owner has this problem, or is annoyed by it...
may be we don't install lots if apps so that 2.3 gb is full,,,u guess if nothing has helped you,,,try titanium backup and move an app to sdcard

[Q] Switch the Internal and External SD Card Link - vold.fstab

Still can't find any useful information on this. I had to do a simple edit to the vold.fstab on my HTC Evo 4G LTE to accomplish this. Now I look at the SGS5 vold.fstab and I know it will require either adding a line or editing another file as well...
I want to use my 64 GB SanDisk instead of the stock internal sd card...
ANYONE?
P.S. I don't want to use 3rd party apps (or anything that doesnt fully switch the internal and external sd card directory links) Somebody must've accomplished this on their SGS5 by now... (Using Sprint G900P towelrooted)
..

Then I'm skeptical that you ah, searched very hard. There are dozens of threads about this, it would be rather hard to miss all of them when actually making a search. I've answered this question myself three or four times myself. Unfortunately it didn't occur to you to tell us how you were searching, so we can't help improve your searches either.
As just one example of many, this script works great on the S5. It completely swaps the internal and external storage spaces and has also been incorporated into the Phoenix S5 custom ROM.

lol its back up now. Dunno why it was unavailable eariler.
After looking it over, the script is pretty ingenious... (linking the extSdCard dir to data/media/0) - I will try placing it in my init.d folder and rebooting later.
Had no luck with FolderMount so this should do the trick, thanks.
Hmm...
I had to create the system/etc/init.d folder and now it seems that the 11extsd2internalsd script is not being executed on reboot.
Anything I can do to enable the init.d folder to be recognized?
Running KOT49H.G900PVPU1AND2 - Android 4.4.2
Edit 1: Searched for init.d support and found I should add: busybox run-parts /system/etc/init.d/ (to the bottom of init.qcom.post_boot.sh - and make sure there is a blank line underneath it) - Gonna try and reboot now, let you know what happens.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/mod-how-to-add-init-d-write-to-external-t2814733
Edit 2: Well I got init.d support (it executed the script and created a data/int2externalsd folder with a .log file) but nothing changed as far as the mounts...
I'm pretty sure my sd card was fat32 but I guess I can try the exfat version to see if thats why its not working... Any thoughts?
Edit 3: Nope still nothing. Both scripts created a intSdCard and "empty" folder in the /data/media/0 (internal sd card) mount - as well as the same .log file
I didn't reformat my sd card prior to execution, but I really doubt that will fix anything... Unless this all truly stems from formatting my sd card I think I will give up for now.
I'm holding off on purchasing a 128 gb card until I can figure this out - I need some help from someone who uses this script and can tell me why its not changing the mounts for me.
Thanks in advance - zmag

Workaround for Ext-SD

My last phone had no internal SD, and no problems.. The G3 has an internal sd and I cannot write to External at all due to some sort of security feature -- even with root. In Xplore File Manager it has a workaround to transfer files to the Android/data folder, but I didn't realize and made a nandroid backup to Ext-SD in TWRP before trying my first rom and nothing was written and no error given, thus losing all my data (Luckily I made a stock backup and copied to PC for archive before any modding).
Is there a way to unlock this "feature" on the G3 or is my external sd basically useless? This was one of the main selling points vs the Nexus for me.. Really disappointed.

Use xposed framework module kitkat sd card full access
Sent from my LG-D855 using XDA Free mobile app
That's it? Amazing, thank you for the quick response and sorry for being to lazy to search.. Was at work and just popped into my head to ask.
Edit: are you using it on your g3? Some comments say it doesn't work on 4.4 and to use foldermount instead.. I know were still on 4.2 on the 852, but if ill need to switch again id rather use the most permanent fix available.
I'm going to try this regardless, just curious what everyone uses to work around this.. Also, what xplore app do you use to utilize this fix. Not seeing an "official" xplore app.
Its funny, on the main display card in phone dealers it says memory upgradable to 128gb.. I find it humorous that your average person would not be able to easily use it without being savvy with computer/phone tweaking.. Ran into a similar issue on my roommates xperia j, forcing me to try apps like app2sd which did not work well at all either -- very frustrating to say the least. I honestly fail to see the reasoning for the complexity here as you can easily have multiple storage mediums on a computer.. This "security feature" makes no sense to me. Lol
Edit: I need to rely more on google than asking redundant questions. For future reference, googling "xposed framework installer" yielded a result for the main XDA thread for it.. *facepalm*
