MTP Solution! - One (M8) General

Hi!
I've been having some problems with MTP and I've been searching for days and finally found a solution!
My problem was that MTP was showing a yellow exclamation in device manager and an error "Code 31"
After installing, uninstalling and re-installing dozens of drivers I found this solution:
1. With phone unplugged open cmd (Run as Administrator)
2.Type this command:
Code:
net localgroup Administrators "local service" /add
3. Plug phone
4. ???
5. Profit!

Well maybe it is a bit dangerous..however, it does not add your local account to the administrator group. just the "Local Service" account.
This is the only solution I've found for my MTP problem and I thought it would be good to share cause I've spent days trying to fix it.
Anyway, I believe there are many things we do in these forums here(generally, at xda forums. not m8 specific), that make our phones less secure, but we still do it because we love to control our devices in any way we want.
:highfive:

Easiest way is just to swich off device (yes off ?) plug to Pc and wait for Windows to install correct drivers
Works for me ?

This for didn't work on my PC. But what did work (similar) is to manually select the device in Device Manager, and pick the option to pick the drivers, then selected the generic Android MTP device.

Windows 7 MTP USB Device Failed-FIX

Most of us win7 users get this error allot. We get this error because the administrator privileges are buggy to say the least in win7. So here is what you have to do. (Worked Like a Charm for me, after trying all the solutions around).
1.Disconnect the phone from the PC/Laptop
2.Run the Cmd as a administrator (right click-run as administrator)-Image1
3.Type in the following command: net localgroup Administrators local service/add-Image2
4.Hit enter-Image 3 (It is not absolutely necessary to get the same return as I have)
5.Connect the phone in MTP mode
Note: You might have to do this every time you reboot your PC/Laptop. Bottom line is run this command every time you have the MTP issue
Hope it helped. If so please hit the thanks button
Isn't the third image an error message? I get exactly the same if I type:
Code:
net localgroup adfsnadsnadfskdsga.df/asd'vasdf/v/adfv/a/dfv

lol yeah it's an error
don't really care what it is as long as it works. not saying it will work for everyone but untill i put that command the MTP mode doesn't work.
Thanks for the suggestion but this didn't work at all for me.
What worked:
** Unplug the phone
** Close all Windows Explorer windows - My Computer, c:\ etc etc
** plug the phone in again.
I could reproduce this behaviour repeatedly - if any explorer windows were open the installation would fail.

worked for me - but there is a typo - space is missing between service and /add
correct syntax and answer would be
C:\Windows\system32>net localgroup Administrators local service /add
The command completed successfully.
The correct command is:
Code:
net localgroup Administrators "local service" /add
And it still didn't work for me - i.e. I'm still getting the MTP USB failure.
By the way - users of this command should be made aware that running it has SERIOUS security implications - if you're running this command your system must be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN to be free of viruses, malware, spyware etc.
Did not work for me.
I have other issues too. When I hook up my phone in msc mode. Sometimes after I disconnect, the phone does not remount the sd card. And I also lose all of my icons on my home screen. I usually have to power off the phone. Take out and reinsert the sd card for the phone to read it again, and then re-organise my home screen.

This method did not work for me. Still fails to install MTP USB device every time!
For the last little while my phone wouldn't recognize the pc connection at all. Now i get the MTP failed error during driver install
The admin cmd workaround did not resolve my issue.

Still sitting with the same issue as you!
I plug my device into a laptop with a 64bit operating system and it works fine.
Think it has something to do with a conflict of the actual PC because I have had it working on the same PC before but no matter what I try I can't resolve this!
I think this is one of the most important things that should be fixed by Sony.
I can't understand how they can sell 400-600 € devices and don't fix problems like this one.
THANK YOU

[Q] Windows 7 fails to install MTP driver

I recieved my N4 yesterday.
When I try to connect it to my notebook (running Windows 7 Professional), the installation of the MTP driver fails. The error message says something like "driver could not be found". ADB however works without problems. (I allready debugged some apps on the phone.)
I tried installing the drivers from the toolkit, but it didn't work.
On my brothers netbook the MTP drivers were installed successfully. But I can't get it working on my notebook.
Can anyone help me?

Thanks for your help. I allready tried an other usb port. It did'nt work.
I wanted to avoid it but I reinstalled windows. Now it works. Thanks again.
Hmm, messed with this problem for ages yesterday, mtp installed fine in normal mode but refused when in 'usb debugging' mode
simple fix, find your wpdmtp.inf file in windows/inf
edit it like shown, look for the [Generic.NTx86] and [Generic.NTamd64] entries near the top of the file........
[Generic.NTx86]
%GenericMTP.DeviceDesc%=MTP, USB\MS_COMP_MTP
%GenericMTP.DeviceDesc%=MTP, USB\VID_18D1&PID_4EE2&MI_00
[Generic.NTamd64]
%GenericMTP.DeviceDesc%=MTP, USB\MS_COMP_MTP
%GenericMTP.DeviceDesc%=MTP, USB\VID_18D1&PID_4EE2&MI_00
...then update the driver in device manager, use automatic search
just make sure the 'VID_18D1&PID_4EE2&MI_00' matches your device id, check in device manager.. but i'm guessing all nexus 4 are the same.. usb debugging mode
I did a clean install of windows and that solved the issue for me. Thanksfor your help anyway.
I usually see what drivers do install, like adb or whatever, and then remove/uninstall them AND delete them
Then installed this pack
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1998650
then connect to a different USB port and try again with the new drivers
Also, some USB hubs can be under-powered and cause problems.

It doesn't ask. I plug in the phone, and Windows says it can't install the MTP driver.
If I go into Device Manager and find the phone (with the yellow triangle and !) and select Update Driver Software, then navigate to the i386 folder from the Universal Naked Driver (on an i5 system), it tells me that "The best driver for your device is already installed" or something similar.
Of course, if I uninstall the device from device manager (and presumably the bad MTP driver as well), it disappears, so I have nothing to point to to install the drivers.
Earlier today I reinstalled the drivers for my N4 on my work PC (Vista Business) and I had to reboot before it recognised the N4 as an MTP Device - prior to that it only saw it as an 'MTP Device'. Now it sees at 'Nexus 4'
I have a similar problem I have a kindle fire
I have install the ADB driver but am having extreme difficulties getting the MTP drivers to work
I have tried everything (every solution on Google)
and nothing works
I've tried the "Media Transfer Protocol Porting Kit"
I tried to get Microsoft help they gave me the run around and confused me even more
here is the conversation
Microsoft: "Thank you for that information
Nathaniel I was checking your product key and it is blocked that is why you can not connect these devices to your computer, you may be a victim of counterfeit software so in this case since it is an OEM computer which means that the manufacture of the computer installed Windows 7 on your computer I recommend you to contact the manufacture of your computer to see if they have an option in order to resolve this issue you are having."
me: when i contact them what do I ask for?
Microsoft: You need to ask for a new product key
me: I am confused what does this mean? that the manufacturer put windows 7 OS on here illegally? but all PC's come with windows OS so every PC in the world is suspect to counterfeiting
them: No, this could be because someone still some information of your computer and use the product key to try to activate Windows until the product key got blocked
No, the name is not involved in this case it is jut the product key
what do I do?
is there an alternative to MTP drivers?
Solved
Hi, i had the same problem described in previous posts and I managed to solve thanks to what is written by meangreenie.
In practice, in the windows\inf of my Windows 7 the file wpdmtp.inf was no longer present but there is only the "compiled" version (wpdmtp.pnf).
I retrieved the file from an earlier version founded in he folder Winsys and so the LG driver are installed without further problems.

You might be using the wrong driver (Android ADB) instead of the MTP driver. This happened to me the other day!
If you're in Debug Mode, you've already done the first step I was going to suggest.
Here's the second step that worked for me: Open Device Manager -> Click Android Device (top of my list) which exposes "Android Composite ADB Interface" -> Right click that device -> Update Driver Software -> Browse My computer for driver software -> Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer -> then choose "MTP USB Device" -> Next
Mine installed the MTP driver and then the N4 opened normally.

That works for me with USB Debug ticked and in MTP Mode but not in PTP Mode (on CM10.2-nightly-20130817). I absolutely can't see my pics in no way... (I suppose this is a bug from Google to be fixed in further updates). ADB and FB are correctly working as tested with NexusRootToolkit 1.7.1 Drivers Test.
May it help to delete original DCIM folder and start from a new one??
edit: Shame on me... I forgot that I've formatted my SDcard, so I've no picture in DCIM folder.... Sorry! So I can say that McDougal trick totally worked for me!
try to check the device manager to check the missing drivers with ! mark
Maybe I'm not completely getting the problem, but just doing this worked fine for me:

It works perfectly. He simply says..
Go to the Registry Editor (Start –> Run –>type in, “regedit” (without the quotes) then click OK.
Search the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\
Go upto Edit>Find, type in or copy/paste Portable Devices
In the right hand pane you will see the (Default) value “Portable Devices” on the string
Once found, you see a string value called UpperFilters –> delete it!
Reconnect the device. Finished!

[Solved] Windows unable to install MTP driver

Hello guys!
I have already read some topics on this forum but it is my first message.
As indicated in the title, I cannot connect my Nexus 4 on my computer using MTP. This computer is running Windows 8.1 Update 1. So far I have tried every method I have seen on the web so I am a little bit desperate.
I have tried to plug my device on other computers and it was automatically detected on Windows 7, Windows 8.1 Update 1 and Ubuntu 14.04.
On my computer, as it does not auto-configure MTP I have tried to install ADB drivers, hoping it would help me. Universal ADB drivers, Naked Drivers and drivers from the SDK didn't changed anything. I also tried changing USB port.
It always recognised my phone as a "Nexus 4" in the "Other devices" section of the Device Manager (I do not have "Android Device" section), except in when MTP + debugging are activated. Then I have both "Nexus 4" and "MTP", in "Other devices" section.
It does not work in PTP mode either and I also tried uninstalling/reinstalling the Nexus Root Toolkit, even if I do not see how it can help...
One last point: I have the "connected as multimedia device" notification on my Nexus 4 when MTP is activated, even if it's not recognised by Windows.
Do you have any idea of what I can do?
Have you tried Nexus 4-specific drivers? Try following this guide.

Yes, I saw it worked for a lot of people, for what I have read, but it seems that I am not that lucky
When picking from the list, I tried from the Android Device section and it displays "Unable to find any drivers for this device". Same Results in “Mobile devices”.
When I try “Show all devices”, I have a lot of possibilities. I just tried “MTP Device” from both “Standard MTP-Compliant Device” and “Standard MTP-Compliant devices” sections, and it displayed “The install class is not present or is invalid”
Am I cursed?
I was wondering, is it possible that the problem is coming from my hardware? Or its drivers? (Those for the motherboard maybe?)
EDIT: I just found this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2493734
I will try it and I will keep you updated when it is done.
EDIT 2:
So I tried the solution... and it worked! :good:
I had the N version of Windows 8.1, mainly to avoid useless software like Windows Media Player, and it was the exact problem.
Sorry for taking a little of your time, and thank you again!
No problems, I'm glad you had it fixed.

[GUIDE] Fix MTP driver installation on Windows 10

Hi guys and girls...
I just recieved my new phone a few days ago. Plugged it into an old Windows 7 x64 laptop and Windows instantly updated the driver. On a 2016 Dell E7450 Windows 10 x64 laptop... It didn't. Tried the Google USB drver package, but it didn't work either. Windows reports about a problem with an INF file and doesn't finalize the driver install...
I just saw someone reported the same issue in Q/A. I thought it would be a good idea to write a step by step guide.
@ppd0526 proposed an easier solution to fix the issue:
Please if you use this solution, don't forget to say thanks to him in this post: THANKS

From the menu, select:

From here, you should see an "Unknown device" or an "MTP device" with an exclamation mark.
Right click on the device and select "Update driver software":
Click: "Browse my computer for driver software:
Click: Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer:
Scroll down till you find "LeMobile Android Device" and select it:
Here, select the second option: "MTP USB device"
Success
Now recognized in device manager:

Hopefully, it will help some people.
Awesome, thanks! After several months with my phone, this just happened to me yesterday and I couldn't figure it out. The Google USB driver reinstall didn't work for me either, but this did!
As a suggestion, it's quicker to get to Device Manager by right clicking on the gear icon (Start) and selecting Device Manager.

This guide doesn't work anymore. MTP Device and MTP USB Device are no longer the menu options. Uninstalling the device doesn't work. You just end up with the exact same MTP with the exclamation point as before.

Thank you sooo much :victory:, I actually didn't have the wpdmtp.inf in C:\Windows\Inf but I had this folder (link) containing a couple of android drivers and there was wpdmtp.inf file in it, I right clicked and installed it and VOILLAA!!... everything went perfect after that. If for any reason you still face MTP problems after this I would recommend to do a manual installation of MTP drivers by going to "Device Manager", click MTP entry with exclamation then "Update Driver Software"->"Browse my computer for driver", navigate to the folder location where you extracted the drivers (link).... you should be done after that. If otherwise you face a problem along the lines of "section in this INF is invalid" while doing manual installation dreboot your PC and find the wpdmtp.inf again, right click then install and you would have fixed your problem. :good:

trying these methods is still failing for me... shows "Pixel" in device manager.. if I try to update drive.. it says either can't find.. or failed...
and if i turn on Transfer Files.. Device manager shows ADB and MTP under "Other" but both fail when trying to update drivers..

Uninstalled the driver and reinstalled using this method works fine! :good:
If someone has difficulty with the above or it doesn't work (which it should) i leave the one below just in case...
Click to show the guide:
Right click on the Windows start menu icon and select Device manager:
From here plug your Pixel using your USB cord to your computer. Pull the notification bar on your Pixel and tap on:
USB charging this device
Tap for more options
From the menu, select:
Transfet files
From here, you should see an "Unknown device" or an "MTP device" with an exclamation mark.
Right click on the device and select "Update driver software":
Click: "Browse my computer for driver software:
Click: Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer:
Scroll down till you find "LeMobile Android Device" and select it:
Here, select the second option: "MTP USB device"
Success
Now recognized in device manager:
In "This PC":
Hopefully, it will help some people.

[GUIDE] Fix MTP driver installation on Windows 10

Hi guys and girls...
I already wrote this guide in the Pixel XL forum. I'm adding it here for convenience, since our devices share (i guess?!) the same hardware for some part. Feel free to ask a MOD to delete it if i'm wrong...
I recieved my Pixel XL almost two weeks ago.

Hello,
When plugged in, and "file transfert" is selected, how is your device displayed in device manager?
Unknown device?
Cheers...

In MTP mode is sais "MTP" and in PTP mode it sais "Nexus 5X" (i have an Nexus 5x).
On my Laptop is sais "LeMobile ADB Composite" or something similar and there it works. But on my Desktop i have the new Win10 Creator Updates and on my Laptop i still have the regular Win10. Before the Creators Update it worked on my Desktop, so since then there is something "broken".

Picture 1: In the Device manager is sais "MTP".
Picture 2: When installing it via "search from a list" the usual "MTP-USB-Device" option is missing.
Picture 3: When installing it via browsing for the google-drivers from Google it sais *MTP couldnt be installed. Windows couldnt find drivers for this device.*
So both methods from picture 2 and 3 which normally should work don't work for me :/.

I saw this also before. I don't have this file. I downloaded it from a homepage, copied it in there and tried to install it, but installing it failed. But i don't know how to officially get this file into the INF-folder besides just copying in there which doesnt work (actually i think it worked a year ago where i had this problems as well but it doesnt work anymore).
I have Windows N and the Media FEature Pack KB .....81 installed, so this isn't the problem either.

Hey,
I'm going to up it for you, let me fire my PC up. Anyway, both ways worked like a charm on my windows 10 Pro. Should work for you, unless your windows is faulty or misconfigured in some way.
I've seen another file having the same name with a different extension. You might out it in Windows folder as well and try selecting wpdmtp.inf...
Good luck...

Hey,
So with my files it fails yet?
Do you have another device to test? Does it work?
Good luck...
Looking for missing features from the windows 10 N version i found this:
Windows Portable Devices: There is no support for media synchronization, image acquisition, or file browsing.
It looks like the media feature pack you installed lacks this feature...
Good luck...

Yes

Just tried it with my galaxy nexus, it has exactly the same issues. On my other Computer with a quite new Windows 10 without any big updates everything works fine (the mass storage i mean).
Good luck...

So now after adding this wpdmtp.inf file i see "MTP-USB-Device" but it has no signature. Also in the Windows Test Mode i can't install the MTP-USB-Device without the signature.

Hey,
Either it must be a simple fix and i can't troubleshoot it properly as i'm not in front of your computer, or part of the stuff missing in Windows N is not included in the pack you installed.
Keep searching. Post in the windows help forum. See if a real tech figured a way of fixing the issue.
I'm really sorry.
Good luck...
