Hey all at xda,
Recently I purchased, second hand, a Nexus 4. But I have been having massive issues with the battery. Firstly it seems to be completely inaccurate in reading the battery levels. It jumps all over the place, and reports back RIDICULOUS charging speeds. (10 minutes and the phone went form 7% to 95% :S).
The other problem that I have been having aside from those strange sporadic readings is the fact that the phone does not work at all when it's not plugged in. It lasts for 3 or 4 seconds after I unplug it, and then turns off, and appears to bootloop when I attempt to start it back up again, even when I plug it back in. I CAN get into the bootloader and my TWRP recovery perfectly fine and with no issues. TWRP often reports a 25% battery drop despite the fact that I JUST removed its charger.
It still bootloops when I plug the charger back in and let it charge for some time. I actually have to go into recovery and execute a factory reset to be able to get back into the ROM.
Should I try different ROMs?
Originally I put on cyanogenmod 11 kitkat. While I was running through the initial phone setup was the first time I encountered this unplugged issue. Due to this, and the bootloop I thought I had softbricked the phone, and so I reflashed from CWM to TWRP and put on a different ROM.
I upgraded to kitkat 4.4.4 this ROM to be exact. There seemed to be no issue it runs PERFECTLY when plugged in. But still doesn't last when not plugged in, and begins reporting strange battery percentages, eventually turning off completely.
When attempting to restart the phone I get the Google image, with the unlocked padlock at the bottom, and then it goes straight to the battery image with the electricity symbol in the middle. The same occurs when starting from the bootloader. Occasionally the same occurs when attempting to get into twrp but not always.
Is this simply a battery issue, and will replacing the battery solve the issue, or are there larger problems at steak here? Did I get ripped right off by the seller. (Doesn't seem like it, seller told me to contact him if there were any issues and he would do his best to help / solve the problem for me.)

I would try out some roms and kernels and see what happens. And if nothing helps than contact your retailer and ask for him

I'll try some more rom's and see if the issue persists. Unfortunately contacting my retailer won't help as this is a second hand purchase from an individual, rather than a store/company. (got a sick deal btw 180 for it ).

I'm hoping this is purely the issue, since it's and easy fix, I'll try the above suggestion when I get home from work. (or before hehe) If new roms and kernals don't fix the issue I suppose I'll order a new battery and hope for the best. They're pretty cheap anyway.
Another thing that may be worth mentioning, is that USB charging seems to be useless in giving the battery any juice. It somehow is actually capable of draining quicker than it chargers if left on plugged in. Even turned completely off and just plugged in to charge yields no results. It must be plugged into the wall.
Just a bit of an update, I got home from work and noticed that the screen had begun to separate from the chassis. I suspected that perhaps the battery was bloated, given the issues I have been having. I am now 99% sure it is the battery.
When I took the phone apart, the battery was indeed bloating and and even burst open on the bottom, exposing these 'layers' along with some casing ruptures on the bottom of the battery as well.
I have ordered a new battery and it has shipped. Hopefully a new battery is the nail in the coffin for this issue.

I don't know much about battery tech, but the front of the battery says Li-Ion, should I concerned since I've handled it with my bare hands?

Just wash your hands. It's not going to kill you handling the battery.

It still is a Li-Po battery. Li-Po and Li-Ion both are types of Lithium-Ion batteries, the difference is that their structure is different
Li-Po is safer and less hazardous

As soon as I started it, I received the notice that an update was ready to be installed, which I did (4.2).
After that I got another notice to install 4.2.1.
So far so good, everything worked very well....also the normal charging with stock charger and cable.
Then after about 1.5 weeks I noticed that my battery level didn't went down from 100% to xx%, even after playing games for several hours.
I am absolutely sure this wasn't the case before, I did charge well and battery-level went down normally.
So because I couldn't tell if the battery was empty or not (because it kept being on 100%), the Nexus went down ofcourse.
Well, I plugged in the stock charger and cable and started to charge it.
Battery icon (when Nexus is off) nicely went from first quarter (25%) to full (100%) when I unplugged it.
It booted up nicely, but then I noticed that the battery-level showed 0% and kept stating 0%. Even again after playing games for several hours (GTA4 and RR2).
Normally it should decrease in battery-level ofcourse.
So now I'm stuck at battery-level 0%, but strange thing is that the Nexus works fine besides this small problem.
I can charge it, play with it for several hours, reboot, deplete the battery, etc....
Only thing is I can't see the actual battery-level which is very annoying, since I never know when the battery is empty and needs to be recharged.
I searched internet using Google and also here on XDA, but never found a solution.
What I already did was :
1. Reflash stock ROM, using the Nexus Root Toolkit.
2. Flash CM 10.1 with CWM Touch
3. Tried to hold down POWER + VOL UP + VOL DOWN for 30 seconds
4. Tried POWER + VOL UP
Nothing I did worked.
Did someone had this problem before and was able to solve it ?

Hi,
I had this issue too when i purchased my nexus 7.
For solve the probleme I've remove the back of the tablette then unplug and replug the battery.
Don't had any other issue. its realy a nice tablette you have make a good choice.
Sounds like a problem with the fuel gauge chip... Not sure if you can fix it.

That file only stores the data used to fill the battery graph... It has nothing to do with the actual calculation of battery percentage.

Check out this thread, there's people talking of a fix for PA for battery percentage stuck at 100%.. Maybe the same cause as your problem... Look from post #10047 onwards.. Makes me think its probably not a hardware issue at least.

In PA, is definitely a software issue and seems to be caused by paprefs. The issue that is commonly reported with the N7 across all roms is typically caused by the battery connector not being properly seated. Asus QC consistently has fallen short on this connector.

I have fixed multiple loose battery connectors using clear scotch tape. The problem is that they didnt use any adhesive on the battery for a batch of n7`s. Makes it possible for the battery to slide back and forth at least 5mm. When it does it pulls the internal battery lead right off the mother board connector. Tape the connector tight. Then tape the battery to that side. Do NOT tape over the copper tape. I even made a small strip of foam to place along the far side of the battery to remove the room to slide.
Easy fix for an annoying problem.

I can surely try to open the back and check if the battery cable is seated correctly, but I'm wondering....
If it isn't seated correctly, wouldn't that mean that the battery isn't charged at all ?
In my case the battery is being charged and depleted normally, since I can use the N7 to play games etc.
Only the battery-level indicator keeps telling me the level is at 0% and it says "unknown".
It's just annoying as I don't know when it's fully charged or fully drained.
Now I let it charge for a complete night and work with the tablet untill it dies on me.
Just to let everyone know, who might face the same problem :
I pulled off the back cover and found out that indeed the connector, coming from the battery going to the mainboard, was not fixed in its socket.
It was not completely out of the socket, just not firmly pressed.
So I pressed it firmly and put back the cover.
After restart, the readings are back to normal.
Thanks everyone for pointing me in the right direction.

I have exactly the same problem!! Can you please help me. I tried what you said - removed back cover, pressed the connector hard, and switched on again. The problem is still there. Can you look at this picture - http://android.hdblog.it/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Nexus-7-Teardown.jpg and tell me if the connector are the red and yellow wires on the left, on the side of the tablet closest to the camera? If so, how did you press it? Could you explain those steps once again please?? Much appreciated!

Make sure you put a piece of tape on the connector to secure both pieces together and also one on the battery to prevent it from shifting. The newer n7's had a battery that didn't fill the space for it...allowing it to shift and pull the connector free.

I had exactly the same issue. Word 4 word.
I took the back off my n7 (take the SIM holder off 1st, makes getting the back off much easier) and noticed the battery connection was loose. Unplugged fully, replugged and got my battery % back! :thumbup:

First off, for everyone that has battery-related problems, please check my thread:

It provides "fixes" to a number of battery-related issues.
Second, the cover is really easy to get off. Just use your fingernails. Start half-way down one of the long sides (I forget which, but try both - your fingernails will easily slide into the seam). Gently snap off the cover from your starting point. Slowly work your way around. If you go slowly/carefully, it'll come off rather easily and without breaking off any tabs. It snaps back on easily as well.
In my post, I recommend that you apply a small piece of electrical tape on the battery connector, as they have shown over time to come loose for a number of N7 owners.
In all but the occasional rare case, N7's with battery-related issues are easily "fixed" and do not need to be returned for replacement. Just read my thread. It'll save you a lot of time and frustration. It'll also might save you from a needless return!

Strange. my tablet is doing the weird battery bug. Battery stuck @ 100% for quite some time, even after a whole day of idle and @ home usage after work.
Realized it wasn't dropping.
This morning, I opened up the back and checked out the battery. It was glued down so not shifting around, but I noticed there were fingerprints on the copper material. Odd thing is I bought this tablet new. Box was sealed and everything.
So far I unplugged the battery and plugged back in. Haven't turned the device back on just yet. Might wait a couple hours and see.

Yup I stumbled upon your thread after a bit of searching. The tablet was actually rather new, just purchased a week ago. Was charging and draining fine for few days of ownership, and all of a sudden it started acting up. I realized it was too good to be true seeing 100% battery % after a whole day + gaming on it @ home.
So after attempting to replace my Nexus 4's battery, some weird things have been going on with the battery level. It will get suck at a certain percentage, be it 54% 70% or 100% and jump back and forth between them on the battery meter like a sawtooth wave. I have tried putting the old battery back in with the same results. To add some more problems, the phone will occasionally randomly shut down, not crash but just do a full shut down.
I've tried flashing back to stock and doing full wipes, yet nothing is seeming to help. Perhaps one of the pins to the battery is blocked by something? I can't seem to find anyone with a similar issue.
After installing did you fully charged and then wipe battery stats?

I think I found the problem...and it's not good. One of the solder joins on pin 4 of the battery contact came loose. Even worse trying to fix it made the whole thing wiggle, and now the phone ONLY works if I got a piece of paper wadded under the cover to push down the connector.
Looks like it's ****ed, but I think I got it working for the weekend until a replacement can come. Looks like I'm a Moto G man now.

So the problem is on the new battery, not the phone? If so, that's good. I kinda figured it was the battery.
Hi all, first time poster.
My Nexus 4 has been displaying behaving wacky. I've tried searching a ton, but can't find any posts with this collection of symptoms. Here's the story, please bear with me.
Two days ago I replaced the battery, left it charging all night, next morning it still would not boot. Every time I would just get the flashing red light. The only way it would boot was if I held volume down + power for 15 seconds, at which point inserting the micro USB cable would get the bootloader up. From there I could boot to android, but it would turn off as soon as I unplugged.
Charging it wirelessly made the battery hold charge, but still it would only boot if I did the 15-seconds-then-cable trick and chose "start" from the bootloader, or help volume Up +power. Simply holding the power button makes the phone vibrate three times and then show the flashing red light.
Once in Android, it would charge via USB and wireless. Debugging, etc. was also working. But if turned off, charging via USB gives the red light, and charging wirelessly doesn't show the white charging icon. Once back in Android, the battery indicator is all over the place, from 98% to 80% to 64%, back to 80%.I've tried calibrating, running the battery down and charging to full, but no change.
Now, every time I send a reboot command, from Android, fastboot, adb, bootloader, recovery, anywhere, the phone turns off but doesn't boot. I have to boot it manually.
At this point I went back to stock, using factory image (flash-all), and even during this I had to boot manually every time the script was <waiting for device>.
After a few more wipes and roms, I settled on Chroma (stock kernel, radio).
The system is running fine, but all the issues explained above persist.
Any ideas getting the battery to read properly? And what's with it only booting via bootloader or volume up + power. How about charging while off?

Sounds like the battery is defective or something went wrong during the battery replacement.
The red light flashing when connected to a charger indicates that the battery is fully discharged.

The phone charges (seemingly) normally when it's on, USB or wireless. But even at full battery, if I try to charge it via USB (computer or wall), I get the flashing light and no charge. Wireless works.
What could have gone wrong during replacement to cause this? Me actually messing up the hardware, shorting something?
My only option now seems to be buying another battery and testing whether it behaves differently.
Does the old battery work at all? If it does, you could try putting back the old battery.
Where did you get the replacement? I know that new oem replacement batteries are very difficult to obtain.
The old battery was totally shot. I bought the new one off of Amazon, but yeah total crap shoot if it's any good until you install it.
I'm just trying to rule out possible firmware and software issues before I gamble on another one.
So you think a dud battery could cause all of this stuff, from charging to booting issues?
Yup, I think it's is the battery. According to many people, the batteries on Amazon are not oem.

So, I'm just going to return this one and try to get a legit OEM.
For those on the same boat as me: I contacted LG United States and they directed me to https://www.encompass.com/ for parts.
They were not able to find the battery based on phone information, so I gave them the code printed on the actual battery I removed, EAC61898601 LLL. The battery cost US$28 plus $8 shipping (not the $9 I paid on Amazon). It's currently on a 5-day back order, not terrible I suppose.
I'll update here when I've re-replaced the battery.

Sounds good. Finding and obtaining a legit battery for this phone is a bit of a monumental feat. Seems like installing it is the easy part in comparison

Maybe pin 2 battery connector broken. What is the battery temperature in ampere app ? When pin 2 broken not showing correct percentage and battery temperature. If can't read battery temperature or percentage correctly, phone can only boot via bootloader. Posibble you broken battery connector jack motherboard phone when disconnecting old battery. Or it's problem only new battery (inside battery or battery connector flex cable). Try to push battery connector by finger and hold, if percentage showing ok, you are broken pin 2 on motherboard phone and must been repair by professional. Watch this video

Did you ever recieve the battery? How is it? What's the date code on it?
I wonder if these batteries are re manufactured or pulled from recycled phones.
I've been doing tons of research on this whole battery draining issue on the 6p. I cant seem to find a simple solution around this tired issue that plenty of people seem to be having. My battery has about 3 Hrs of screen on time before it dies. I've tried shutting down all kinds of connection settings, clearing the cache and even factory reseting my phone. I just recently tired the android O beta and that didn't help either. All I want is to figure out if my battery needs to be replaced or is it the software that's killing my battery. I've even called google and they cant help, Huawei wants to charge me $165 for a replacement battery and thats way too much. Has anybody found a fix that doesn't involve rooting the phone?

It is NOT the software. There is no fix for a badly degraded battery. Replace your battery. Buy the battery online and then shop around for a local shop to install it if you're not able to.

Are you dying at 60% or lower? Does it happen when you open the camera? Does the phone shut off when a random loud sound plays or something of sorts? I ask cause that is what is happening to me. Random reboots? I don't think that is "battery" related per-say.
Have you tried installing a battery stats app that can help narrow down the culprit?
More details would probably help others help you.
Does it fully charge?
How long does the battery last, not just screen on time?
3 hours SOT doesn't sound terrible. I've heard worse.
How old is the phone?
Had the same problem...I bought a new original battery from ebay and replaced the old battery by myself. To be honest, there was not much improvement...now with a medium usage (whatsapp, wifi or 4g always on, some clash of clans/clash royale gaming) I get 3hrs30min SOT at the late evening, never more. And also I'm on francokernel so I should easily get 4hrs but nothing.
Anyway, unless you are an expert, I don't recommend you to replace the battery for yourself because, sadly, the N6P is a phone impossible to open up without damaging it especially the rear glass...surprisingly, on my case it didn't break but it's all scratched and I should buy a new one.
Furthermore, now my battery doesn't charge anymore up to 100%...it's stuck at 93% and only if i unplug and plug again the phone it gets to 98%...to get 100% i have to plug and unplg it several times and wait something like 30min to get from 98% to 100%. I don't know what caused this problem but it looks like there's no solution...software and hardware battery calibration didn't do anything. Maybe the battery I bought was faulty...
In conclusion, buy the new battery but ask someone expert to replace it if you aren't.

The first replacement battery I tried acted like that and it was quite frustrating. It wouldn't charge to 100% and had about the capacity of my degraded OEM battery. I ended up ordering this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-3-82V-3...wei-Google-Nexus-6P-H1511-H1512-/351786248092 It charges to 100% and has like new capacity, but no internal battery temperature sensor. I installed it in January and have been happy with it. Others have opted for the Cameron Sino brand replacement. more expensive but with working battery temperature sensor.
You can order a replacement back cover with glass and bottom strip for around $25 if you're worrried about scratches. That's under $40 for new battery, aluminum back, camera glass, and bottom strip.

I think I'll go for the Cameron Sino battery...a little more expensive, yes, but more reliable...I've also heard of people complaining that after 2 months their batteries (ordered from ebay, false OEM) died...
So, is that the answer to our fast draining battery issues? To get a replacement battery? The Cameron Sino?

Unless it came from the play store where you can RMA it and let Google have the problem.
But if Google replaces it, it may have the same issues, right?
It could I guess if the battery in the replacement device is a dud. Just got my replacement and the battery is showing 106% capacity compared to 30% capacity on the old one. Back to how it was when I first got it so happy with that service seeing as it was nearly 2 years old.
If the new one does not have a full capacity, then just reject it before you swap over to it and get Google to send out another.

How are you checking the capacity?
Accubattery is one way. Do a couple of decent charges with the screen off and then look at the health report.
Same, I tried several things, clearing the Cache, factory reset and nothing works. My Nexus 6P randomly shuts down between 80% to 90% and doesn't turn on umless I connect it to the charger.
As the title says, Phone won't turn on. There are no led lights at all. It does get warm after being plugged in for a little. I had jrkruse's hybrid_bra1 stock safetynet samsungpay...... rom on it. It was rooted. Very minimal processes running. I actually had basically everything stopped and greenify on. Phone was around 40% battery. I plugged it into charger, took my dog outside, showered real fast, washed a few dishes, then came back in to room within 15 minutes to my phone being dead and hot. It's never got this hot before even while rooted and plugged in with this rom on it. I have never had it get that hot. Was just formatted the day before and really bare but, that is what happened.
A couple battery apps I had put the batteries remaining life capacity at around 60%. It held a charge poorly. Even for 60% capacity it felt weak, considering how little I did on it lately. I am thinking the battery may have took a crap but unsure because it warms up when it is plugged in. I plan on getting a battery soon since they are inexpensive and replace it to try it out.
Just wondering if anyone here has any experience with this and can offer any advice.

You say your battery was already outworn, It may have died. I think you should try with a new battery, Or take it to a technician who can test the phone's hardware to see if there is anything else broken
i've only had one similar case with an s3, which would turn of at random % of battery. But when plugged turned on. I replaced the battery and it worked fine then

funny story....
The mic in my Nubia Red Magic broke and I sent that back to hong kong for repairs like 20 days ago. Before the Red Magic, I used this galaxy s7 edge my friend gave me. I gave it back when I got the Red Magic and told him to sell it or something. Not much later, decided to buy it back off of him for $200 to give to my mother. She loved it. I had the gs7 edge with me exploring prepaid provider options for my mom when the Red Magic mic broke. So then I decided to borrow the edge from her till my phone got back and few days later I break this one too..
I feel naked without a phone for so long haha

I have the same rom, with charging issues. I don't think its the rom causing it. The s7e are getting old and the batteries are taking a toll with the age. My phone will charge up to 81 at night and stay there. I get better results with wireless charging so i just top my phone off during the day with my wireless charger. There is a code to reset the battery's internal memory, if i find the link on how to do it I will post here for you.

Thanks for reply and alright let me know if you find out. My phone had no problem charging to 100% Its just the 100% on the status bar wasnt 100% of the 3600 capacity from wear. My friend's also does the same thing as yours except his he cant charge more than like 24% haha. He just uses it as a plugged in music player in car.... I am getting battery in the mail tomorrow and will see what I can do.

A little late, sorry. lol.
Thanks for suggestion, however, I may have worded my statement incorrectly. I meant to say that My phone would charge to 100% and the status bar displayed it as 100% but, the health and total capacity of the battery in mah was not the maximum 3600 or so due to simple wear and tare. It isn't apparent within any stock android feature however, battery monitoring apps like accubattery gather statistics after several charging sessions and estimate the current mah capacity. Mine was much lower than the default oem stated value of 3600. So my battery could be charged 100% but the 100% is really only 2400 mah lol. It was obvious either way by noticing that after my time using it and the previous owner's bad charging over night habits, that the battery was gradually needing charged more often lol..
I did read about the calibration method before when I was first looking into the battery issues. It seems it is more often done after a new battery is installed.
I screwed up a new battery install at the last second. I had to stop due the tiniest little round metal piece coming off from a very light swipe of my plastic spudger.
It was a very small wire connector piece. Unbelievably irritating. I didn't even finish because I doubt it would work properly. I beleive it is for the rf cable or something not sure. The red one on the left bottom side of the logicboard/motherboard whatever. There are three of them.
I took it apart and put it together a couple times prior to this and in a hurry it popped off and I couldnt find it. I couldnt find out the exact part name online so I could buy one and solder it back on. I did find a site/ supplier that has a plethora of them though. They are tiny coaxial connectors/pins. I didn't look through them all but there are 6,000 some listed under coaxial connectors (RF). https://www.digikey.com/products/en/connectors-interconnects/coaxial-connectors-rf/437?k=coaxial pin
I haven't gotten around to asking samsung or the digikeys support if they could help me find out which it is. They have different sizes and frequency ratings or speeds and such. The phone is packed away until I manage to figure out which pin to buy or if I pull 80$ or so out of my behind and buy a whole new motherboard logic board haha.
