[HOW-TO] [ROOT] Root Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 P31XX using Linux - Galaxy Tab 2 General

This guide will teach you how to root the Tab 2 7.0 P3110 and P3113 running Android version 4.1+ in Linux. I tested this with 4.1.2, but it should work on anything later and possibly ICS (This has not been tested in ICS, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.)
NOTICE: I am not responsible for what happens to your tablet! Make sure you use the correct files for your tablet model. This has been successfully tested on my P3113. THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY AND IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG COULD BRICK YOUR TAB!!! Proceed at your own risk!
Prerequisites: Admin account on Linux computer and tablet charged to 80% or higher
1. Download and install Heimdall and Heimdall Frontend from http://glassechidna.com.au/heimdall/
2. Download 51-android.rules and 70-android.rules from Files to Root ***.zip at the bottom of this post. Make sure you use the correct file for your tablet model.
3. Copy the .rules files into /etc/udev/rules.d and set as executable. Reboot computer
4. Copy the ***.pit from Files to Root ***.zip at the bottom of this post to the directory of your choice. Again, make sure you use the correct file for your tablet model.
5. Download SuperSU zip and this TWRP file for P311X or this TWRP file for P3100 (click names for links.) This version of TWRP will be able to flash KitKat and Lollipop ROMs. Decompress the TWRP tar.md5 file to get a recovery.img file and copy the SuperSU zip to your tablet.
6. Enable USB Debugging on your tablet and reboot into download mode (power off then hold in power and volume down)
7. Open Heimdall Frontend (make sure you run as admin) and click utilities then detect device. It should say "Device Detected"
8. Go into the flash section. In pit section, select the previously downloaded p311x.pit file. DO NOT check repartition.
9. In partition files section, click "Add." Select RECOVERY from the dropdown and select the recovery.img that you decompressed from the tar.md5 file.
10. Double check everything to make sure it is correct. Check the "No Reboot" box and click "Start."
11. If everything went well, you should get to 100%. Wait 10 seconds and disconnect the tablet from the computer. Reboot into recovery by holding down power and volume up.
12. Select "Install" and navigate to the SuperSU zip file. Flash the file and then click "Wipe Cache/Dalvik." Once that is done, select "Back" and "Reboot System"
You have now rooted your Tab 2 P31XX! If you have any question or need screenshots for something, feel free to post in the thread.
If I missed anything, please let me know!

Thanks for this. Very well written guide and thought this would be a breeze ..... but .......
I am having an issue and not sure where to start looking. I have a GT-P3100 that I picked up in Thailand and am connecting from a Linux Debian box. Everything goes well until I try to add TWRP from Heimdall (Step 11). It starts through the process and then stops saying ERRORrotocol Intialisation failed. Heimdall is still connected, the device seems to be fine and I can reboot into my system with no issues but obviously can't go any farther since TWRP isn't there. I am using the TWRP that you suggested for the 3100 and have used the steps you suggested for that device.

Did you do the download pit part for the 3100? It might use a different pit file. Also, what version of heimdall and heimdall front-end are you using? Did you run the front-end as root in terminal like this:
Code:
cd path/to/heimdall (CLICK ENTER)
sudo heimdall-frontend (CLICK ENTER)
Also, if you made a 3100 pit file, could you pm me link to download so I can post it here so other people can use it?

I just remembered what was causing that problem for me. After you download pit in Heimdall, disconnect the tab, reboot it, restart Heimdall, and boot back into download mode. Connect the tab to your computer and click on detect device. Put the pit file you downloaded from the tab in the pit space in the flash tab. Add the recovery image and click flash. I forgot in my previous post that after clicking on download pit, you have to reboot back into download mode and restart Heimdall to make it work.
Have a good day,

That makes some sense. When I was trying this before I really didn't grok on what the point was. It actually makes more sense to me that I would need to reset the environment. Anyway, will try and test this out as soon as I can. Thank you for your help and I pm'd that pit file to you.

Sorry for the double post but I was a little giddy at the prospect of finally getting this done. Ran out of a dinner party to test this. Anyway, works a treat. Followed the additional notes to the letter and boom like that we are back and rooted. Many thanks!

Man that was fast, impressive.
This device, on this build has been one of the most stable and useful mods I have ever done. I love this device and the root/etc. have worked so perfectly over the years that I often forget that it is rooted. This is the way it is supposed to be, but often (due to manufacturers, brands who monkey too much, carriers, or whoever) is not. I just want to thank again all who worked so hard on the galaxy tab 2.0 stuff.

[HOW-TO] Flashing RotoHammers ROM on Out of the Box AT&T Galaxy TAB

MY ORIGINAL QUESTION:
Does Flashing Straight to RotoHammers ROM on AT&T Tab Add Phone Capabilities?
I''m confused between this posting
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895827
and this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=847273
Whats the most current way to get phone capabilities on the AT&T Tab?
Also what is a bootstrapper?
'===========================================================
UPDATE:
For any newbies out there here is the procedure
1. Download Android Sideload Wonder Machine, enable debugging mode, & Sideload z4Root on your AT&T out of the box device. (no ADB knowledge required)
2. Run z4Root Permanent Root
3. Download Root Explorer & Zip System/efs folder , mount your device to USB and keep the zip file on your PC in a safe place
4. Follow the quick tutorial on how to flash the ROTOHAMMER.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895827 ( Just Flash RotoHammer's JME v4 Full .tar via the PDA instead of the file name shown in the screenshot)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894763
6. Once you've reboot your at&t device should now have the Rotohammer Firmware.
7. Enable debugging on the device again.
8. Run RotoHammers script to unlock
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843323
You are in Business. If you have any questions shoot me a PM I'll be glad to help.
The only side effect I have right now is that for some reason when I boot my device I do not see the Samsung Boot Screen or Recovery Mode
9. To fix this side effect flash with odin (PDA and NO Repartition) the JJ4 Bootloaders posted by Rotohammer here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=496999&d=1295722186
Flash Roto-JME version 4 following the steps. You will have a phone icon. The best At&t modem is the bell i900. Besides Roto's pit, pda, and phone files, you will need Odin3 1.7.
I also unlocked it using Roto's instructions, so I can use a t-mobile sim card for EDGE data and voice.
I rooted it with z4root.
It was very easy.
Just read everything a few times, and come back here if you're not sure. Good luck.
Yes. I had a basically stock att tab, I followed the first url you put in your post, it just worked.
After the flash, voice service was working as was 3g/3.5g data.
If you review several of the related posts and watch the video, and review the first url, you'll see they are all doing a very similar thing. I started 'simple' by doing the super one click root thing followed by a rotoBAK just to learn abit and develope some confidence. After a day or two, I flashed away.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Booting#History
Love that reference, but here's the good part:
Wikipedia said:
The computer word boot is short for "bootstrap" (itself short for "bootstrap load"). The term bootstrap derives from the idiom pull oneself up by one's bootstraps. The term refers to the fact that a computer cannot run without first loading software but must be running before any software can be loaded, which seems as impossible as to "pull yourself up by your own bootstraps."

i am still not following when it comes to taking a tab and using a tmobile sim card on an att network. edge is att, right? How would you get a SIM card from tmobile?
I am looking to buy a tmobile tab and am trying to figure out the best way of getting phone service. I NEED it to work as a phone, so working out the logistics is paramount. I am still learning, so any info would help.
Can someone repeat the step by step for both unlocking the device & adding ATT voice calling capabilities, with the latest and most current files.
thanks

Glad to see the flash worked for you! Your directions seem good. You did do a lot of steps that could be streamlined. I did the partition and firmware application in one step in odin. And using the v4 rotojme; it was rooted upon reboot. I did root the stock firmware, to get a backup. But I don't think this a prerequsite to the jme flash.
I too am missing the samsung startup screen.
But good to see it worked for you.
Question: does the protected bootloaders issue affect this process? I'd like to flash my tab (stock Rogers) to enable the phone capabilities.
You can avoid the whole sideload wonder machine by just using this command in adb: adb install z4root.apk
Also, you should be able to do the entire flashing process in one go - not two.
Your probably right about only need to flash straight to V4.

On another Roto thread this was discussed. Usually you have a black screen and a very thin white line. You wait a few minutes and everything is normal. The cause was given as going from stock to Roto Firmware, with the full wipe and re-partition.

[email protected]:~/Roto$ heimdall flash --repartition --pit P1_add_hidden.pit --factoryfs factoryfs.rfs --cache cache.rfs --dbdata dbdata.rfs --param param.lfs --kernel zImage --modem modem.bin
and respond this:
If you wish to repartition then factoryfs, cache, dbdata, primary and secondary
bootloaders, param, kernel and a PIT file must all be specified.
which files do I need use in primary, secondary and bootloaders
Fixed boot screen & missing recovery mode issue. See opening post. These files are from the trusted Rotohammer.
Thanks
Thanks for the detailed procedure to flash...
and thanks Roto for the packaging!
I successfuly flashed my Bell Galaxy Tab from stock with the V4 Full!
No problem regarding the boot screen for me!
Great job guys!

[TOOL] Samsung Galaxy Rescue Kit

After running into a bit of trouble myself and seeing how many people ran into the same thing, namely bricking, i decided to create a quick and easy toolkit for unbricking which did the trick for me. The one i'm posting is for SGS I9000 Intl Version, using latest european firmware from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846913.
However you can create your own custom kit by replacing the files in the kit and modifying the batchfile i've included. Just make sure to read the readme file included for details.
What it does:
- unbricks
- flashes
- flashes with format
- does not use ****ty Odin.
This kit uses the 1click unbrick solution & Heimdall. For those, credit goes to Adam Outler for making the 1click unbrick and to Benjamin Dobell for making Heimdall. It's nothing out of the ordinary. It's just ingeniously flexible. That's all. Anyone with a bit of brain and 5 minutes of spare time can make himself one for his phone and it will get him out of the sticky situation of reverting from ics to gingerbread.
Basically this is all you need to get from broken to working. All of this took me roughly ~10 hours or more of grueling testing and experimenting on my own till 5 in the morn. If you use this or make your own, just credit me & gimme a thanks.
Download the kit from here (240 Mbs):

I doubt. You will need usb jig for that. I think this is for softbrick and not for totally bricked SGS.

Thanks for this post! I will be studying this closely in the coming days.
A quick question: when people cannot enter download mode, is that the situation when the button sequence doesn't work? in that scenario, i used "adb reboot download" -- worked well. after flashing via odin, it seems my button sequence works again.
It worked even on Linux!
Thanks alot for your link.
Unfortunately I use Linux as main OS. Your approach is more MS based but it saved my day anyway.
Had just to paste this shell command after compyling Heimdall for my ubuntu x64 distribution.
sudo heimdall flash --repartition --pit s1_odin_20100512.pit --factoryfs factoryfs.rfs --cache cache.rfs --dbdata dbdata.rfs --primary-boot boot.bin --secondary-boot Sbl.bin --param param.lfs --kernel zImage --modem modem.bin
Hope my donation may pay you a beer
Thanks a lot dude ! and hey, glad i could help !
PS: Feel free to create a linux based version as well , if the same batchfile principle applies... why not ?

In short yes, but it may also be because you're nervous and/or for some reason cannot press to button combo correctly, or if they are broken by hardware.
hmm... Its also possible to include a batch command to adb into download mode for extra comfort at the push of 2 buttons. I'll have to update the kit asap.

Thanks for working so tirelessly on this script. I might give it a go on a windows box or look into your bash to use it on ubuntu. I'm afraid that Heimdall doesn't work on my device yet, though.
And yes, there is a big chance that it was me doing it wrong. on my device, the sequence seems to change with new Kies update too. Entering recovery is just crazy take a look here for further amusement
way simpler to just "adb reboot recovery" and keep the button pressing party for that inevitable rainy day
Hey my cell has been USB Bricked. That means the computer and Odin doesn't detect the cell even when it is in download mode. And not charges either. Will this still work? Can you please give me step-by-step instructions?
Can somebody please explain me the simple point of this software.
As far as I understood this can only be used, if you failed to enter download mode using your phone and you would like to re-instal a rom .. Or is this just a rom install manager?
Sorry confused

Well, for starters you could try to bring it into download mode, use batchfile included and select the option of unbricking it. If that does not work, you may want to try and install the included drivers then attempt to unbrick again.

the point of this kit is to bring your phone from softbrick status into working condition (bootable). So no matter how bad you screw up with the rom installations, you can revert to this, re-root, and you're back on your feet.
Which reminds me: i gotta include a already rooted SGS EU rom. )

Do you happen to know of any good batch scripting guides ? I've been looking for some indepth guide but can't find any. What I'd like to do is use a command which takes some parameters (like where you got your android sdk) and turn it into the path for the adb console (since you need to start it up with parameters like adb reboot recovery, that means that i have to actually tell the script to go into that folder via cd and run the app.). But if you know of alternative ways of starting it up, I'm all ears

Just flash the stock rom again with odin, and cf-root if you want recovery. Good luck!
Nicely packaged up. However, after I ran:
Code:
heimdall flash --repartition --pit s1_odin_20100512.pit --factoryfs factoryfs.rfs --cache cache.rfs --dbdata dbdata.rfs --primary-boot boot.bin --secondary-boot Sbl.bin --param param.lfs --kernel zImage --modem modem.bin
The reboot presents me with "Confirm password". Got a bit confused, but it appears the trick is to just enter any password about 5 times until prompted that this will wipe the card. Then you're back in.
Just in case someone runs into the same situation and was as confused as I was.

Honestly I have no ideea mate. I can only guarantee for the files I supplied in my zip file. If you changed them with yours, it might indicate some of them might be corrupted or not working. I've only used the recovery kit to pull myself out of bricking and revert to stock rom. I didn't try installing a custom rom. Not sure what you were trying to do.
I advise you to try and debrick (should work), and do a format and then install.
If that doesn't work, dunno what to say. As I said above, for me it worked each time.

[FIX]GT-I9505G Restoration from Soft Brick

Ok.. Here we go. If you prematurely flashed stuff to your I9505G and ended up with a soft brick here is your fix.
Step 1. Have a working install of Heimdall - Beyond the scope of this post - there are plenty of places to find it.
Step 2. Boot to download mode - Vol Down + Home + Power, once there, Press Vol Up.
Step 3. Download Mirror #1 (Dropbox - use it til its gone) http://db.tt/lGzaHANK OR Mirror #2 https://mega.co.nz/#!8wABlZZY!Mi4u82myT4ygl0QYLXCTjQhFt7g7asin27weykvUILc (Thanks tublah)
Step 4. Extract to your Heimdall directory
Step 5. I'm not Heimdall master, but this is what worked for me. If you can string these commands into one - lemme know. I'll update post.
Code:
heimdall flash --SYSTEM mmcblk0p16_system.img --no-reboot
When finished - unplug/replug USB cable
Code:
heimdall flash --BOOT mmcblk0p21_boot.img --no-reboot
When finished - unplug/replug USB cable
Code:
heimdall flash --RECOVERY mmcblk0p22_recovery.img --no-reboot
When finished - unplug USB
Step 6. Hold power, when phone vibrates, hold Vol Up + Home + Power until the blue text appears on Google splash screen
Step 7. Wipe data/factory reset

Glad you got it working - Heimdall uses a different driver interface (USBlib) so you've got to change the driver. If you want to go back to using ODIN you'll have to open up the device properties in the "Computer Management > Devices" window and select Roll Back Driver.

In the digging I've done in the past few minutes - it looks like Heimdall doesn't play nice with XP x86. I'll look into what I've got to do to make an ODIN flashable - unless someone around here knows what to do.

my other thought was just do this at work tomorrow morning but that poses another issue for me... all our PCs are encrypted.

IT WORKS!
Here is how I got from soft bricked to stock 4.2.2, using this thread:
- Download Heimdall (from here) + the rar file in the OP
- Extract Heimdall
- Extract the rar into Heimdall directory like so: http://i.imgur.com/VwCBPQ2.png
- Get into bootloader on your phone and connect it to the computer
- Run zadig.exe in \Driver in your Heimdall folder
- In zadig, options -> list all devices, and find the one that is your phone. I had to replug in and out to see which one the phone is, and for me the phone was something that started with MS...etc etc. It wasn't long, about 8 letters
- then hit, replace driver or "Install WCID driver" like so: http://i.imgur.com/wqNw77l.png (note: this image doesnt show my phone connected)
- after that, (for Windows users) open the Heimdall directory, and shift-rightclick on white space (in the explorer window). Then select open command window here.
- Enter the commands in the OP, reconnecting the cable everytime.
- After all of them are run and done, disconnect cable from phone, and hold power button till the screen is black. Then power + home + vol_up and you'll see Google with blue text on top "Booting recovery". Once in recovery use vol buttons to pick "factory reset" (or something along those lines) and hit yes. After that's done, select reboot system now, and DONE. Wait for it to boot in all its glory, give it time as the Google logo flickered once for me.
More info (These things shouldn't impact the process I think): I already had Visual Studio 2012 installed, no Kies.
Definitely have .net 3.5 and .net 4.X (latest one) installed as well as the redist C++ from Microsoft.

[GUIDE] Rooting Galaxy Tab 10.1 - ICS

Hello everybody.
I had some hard time rooting my tablet because of the broken links and outdated guides that didn't work if you had updated to stock ICS. After some hours of tinkering I managed to find the correct files for rooting it so here's and up to date guide for rooting the Galaxy Tab 10.1 with the latest ICS OTA update.
For the record my tablet is GT-P7500 with 3G. This guide should also work for GT-P7510 which is WiFi-only. Please leave a reply if it worked for your other model so I can include it here! Please also tell me if there are mistakes in the guide or you have a problem at some point.
If you follow these steps you will void your warranty.
The package can be downloaded from the signature, or in a single file here:
MIRROR - 1 (Down at the moment)
MIRROR - 2 (Mediafire)
The package ROOT-GT-P7500.rar includes:
A recent version of Odin (v3.07 - 2013)
Samsung USB drivers for Windows
Odin flashable TWRP recovery
TWRP flashable SuperSu
1 - Preparation
Extract the files to a place on your computer.
Make sure Kies isn't running on your PC. Look for its icon in the notification area.
Install "Samsung_USB_Driver_1.5.5.0.exe".
Move the file "Flashable_SuperUser.zip" to the root of your sdcard.
Open "Odin3 v3.07.exe" on your PC.
Press the "PDA" button and select "recovery-TWRP-P4-P7500.tar".
Leave Odin open on the PC.
2 - Download mode
Turn off your tablet.
Connect the USB cable.
Hold POWER + VOLUME DOWN until you see some Android images.
Press VOLUME UP, wait a moment until you get to another screen an press it again.
You should now be in "Download mode".
Open Odin and make sure that the first ID:COM column has a bluish colours and some text like "0:[COM4]". The ID:COM turns blue whever Odin has detected connection between your PC and the tablet. If it's still white/grey something is wrong with the USB connection or the Samsung USB-driver.
3 - The flashing
Now everything should be ready for Odin to flash you a new recovery. Don't change any of the default settings other than what's mentioned here.
Press "Start" in Odin to begin the flash, it should only take a few seconds. If your tabletreboots everything went fine!
If you have problems with Odin detecting your tablet, try rebooting your computer and your tablet, and using a different USB port. It's probably a driver problem.
Now turn off your tablet to enter the new TWRP recovery.
Hold POWER + VOLUME DOWN until you see some Android images.
Press VOLUME DOWN once and then VOLUME UP once to enter recovery.
Use TWRP to backup your current ROM in case something goes wrong or you want to return to stock ROM some time. Google "TWRP guide" if you don't know how to use it.
Once the backup is done, press "Install" in the TWRP main menu.
Locate the "Flashable_SuperUser.zip" and flash it.
If it flashed without errors, reboot your tablet and see if you now have SuperSu within your apps.
You should now have root access!
4 - Custom ROMs
If you want to install custom ROMs, find a flashable ZIP of your favourite ROM and put it on your SDCARD.
You might want to use a program like TitaniumBackup to back up all your apps so you can restore them later on your new ROM.
Follow the above steps from step 4 to enter recovery.
Backup your ROM again.
Press "Wipe" and then wipe cache, dalvik-cache, system and do the factory-reset.
Press "Install" and locate your ROM's ZIP-file.
Flash it and reboot!
That's about it. For long-time reliability I've included the file package in the signature in a split rar file (XDA doesn't allow big files). Download them all and then extract only one of them like any other rar file. If none of the mirrors aren't working and you have a problem downloading it from the sig, feel free to send me a PM.
If this helped you, please press thanks!

Did you at least manage to install CWM or TWRP recovery? There should be a button called "Mount USB-storage". Press it and connect the tablet to your PC, it should show up as a storage device. If that doesn't work you can always use ADB PUSH on Windows to move files to your phone that is in recovery mode. There are several guides for that.
EDIT: Nvm, didn't notice you had fixed it already.
Hey man thanks for this guide. I've been flashing my sgs1900 here & there for a few years but just acquired a SG 10.1 tab so obviously I had to root it for flashing some custom roms later on. Anyway I can see things are more or less the same, but still just a little bit different enough to want to have a good guide at hand before I get all smug at myself later on for thinking I'm a rom king
Excellent guide & thank you for all the required files. KUDOS!
Sdcard
Sorry, I'm new to this. I understand everything except the part that says "Move the file "Flashable_SuperUser.zip" to the root of your sdcard." how do I do this? When I hook up the tablet to my pc, I do not see a sdcard folder.

My apologies, that part really is a bit confusing. "The root of your sdcard" means that you don't put it in any folder. It's the upmost folder level that the user can access without root rights.

Thanks again.
well.. I broke it
i've followed this instruction and forget to sweep content before rom instalation and my rom is broken.
I've been searching a way to transfer another rom data to my tab memory but somehow my laptop couldn't detect TWRP v4.2.2 version.
I'm still searching for another TWRP version that can be file pushing on to TWRP directly from my laptop.
is there any suggestion?
thank you

AUGUST UPDATE
*******************************************
Most people are reporting that LiDroid is successful, I can confirm that it works well. I have occasionally encountered errors when installing apps from Play but they are not common or consistent. Note that when installing LiDroid the user may choose English for the language, but beware that the later Customer Service Customization menu selects the data network, thus if you live in China you should choose CHIN and not ENG at this menu. This second menu has no effect on the phones default language.

You don't have to use the Baidu downloader, just press the GREY button BOTH times. =D
As far as how to flash, it's just like any other ROM. FYI, Shohat said he is working on making his version support the 6V so keep an eye out.

It is still working.
The first dialogue box, with a space to enter text, is for the password, though if you enter it once you won't have to subsequent times you visit the page.
If you're not in China, Baidu loads super slow. If it's too slow to download the 1GB file then you'll just have to wait for Shohat's rom next week. Should be better anyways. =D

Your question makes me think you might want to read a bit on what ROM is (don't worry, I don't reallly know either, but we can always learn more), but ultimately yes, this ROM contains some of the Google services not included in the China Unicom version.
Please be careful and understand that this a temporary fix, this ROM is a bit buggy. Keep an eye out for other XDA roms that will work for 9006V models. You will certainly want to flash something new later.
Nice job of putting it all together in one shot. Still haven't quite done it on my phone, but will be doing it soon. Maybe I'll wait for a ROM until the one you mention by Shohat comes along. Really would like if we could get some english developer love too. I know there are things available in chinese, those alone should have like 90% of the work done for those wanting to do a version for english.

I think that the only thing that really helped me was having the drivers, which I got through the long way, by installing 豌豆荚 on my computer and it automatically installed drivers. Windows couldn't find them. I've seen the drivers on that forum listed above, so if you don't want to install that app (it is kinda annoying, but helps sideload APKs).
One other thing to note:
I also got really thrown off by one part of the above instructions, to enter CWM after you flash it with Odin you need to press Vol+ + Home + Power, not volume down.

Ok.... for english speakers....
Once you are in CWM recovery after yanking the battery last second and loading recovery on the next boot cycle (or you have to do it all again)... You will be presented with options... crazy options... select the first one, then select the second option (it says some english about install-recovery.sh). This will disable the recovery script that keeps writing samsung's recovery over your fresh CWM. Then I chose the 2nd option again after that, thinking it meant something about rooting the phone. Not sure, but the phone rebooted and everything was fine. CWM still intact.
After that, I installed supersu as linked on the chinese website shown previously. you can see english for ZIP and from there see ext.storage or internal, just point to were you downloaded it and click through to install.
I downloaded a copy of gapps for 4.4.2 and did the same thing as I did for supersu and BAM.... now I have google play and it's working.... Finally the phone i was wanting it to be, at least until a fully english rom becomes available.

As far as how to flash, it's just like any other ROM.

I must be missing something here. I finally downloaded this file from the second link, which is called 'Samsung_S5_G9006V.zip'.
I ran Odin v.3.09 to flash this ROM (just like any other ROM), and obviously it doesn't recognise this file, as it's a zip file. So I extracted it to a folder. However, all I get is a lot of folders such as 'data', 'META-INF', 'system', 'tmp', 'tools' and two files 'check_data_app' and 'romconfig.xml'.
Odin also doesn't recognise this, as it's looking for .tar or .md5 or .smd or .gz or .tgz file extensions.
I've tried renaming the original zip file to .tar.md5 but this doesn't work either.
Could you please explain further, or even step-by-step exactly how you are supposed to flash this ROM? What software do I actually need to flash it?

ROMs are .zip and installed via Recovery. You can use ODIN to put recovery on your phone. Clockwork Recovery Mod (CWM), TWRP are both recoveries.
Once recovery is on your phone you can enter it using the volume+ / power / home keys.
If you're still unclear on this process just look at any of the roms in the dev sections, they all include a short how to for installing a rom from recovery.
Thanks ddxv, and sorry for being stupid - all my previous phones I simply flashed from within Windows using ODIN.
So step-by-step guide should be as below?
1. Download Clockwork Recovery Mod (CWM)
2. Download ODIN 3.09
3. Download 'Samsung_S5_G9006V.zip' from your second link
4. Copy 'Samsung_S5_G9006V.zip' to a MicroSD card and place into phone.
5. Reboot phone into Download Mode
6. Start ODIN
7. Click on 'AP' (was 'PDA') and find CWM recovery file
8. click Start
9. Once finished, the 'Pass' message will be displayed.
10. Reboot into recovery mode
11. Choose Wipe Data/factory rest
12. Select install zip from SD card
13. Flash phone
14. Reboot

Usually people say you need to wipe data / factory reset, wipe dalvik cache and wipe (system?) cache.

My VyprVPNs connect but there isn't really any data sent afterwards. My StrongVPN account works occasionally. Neither are as good as on the computer. Make sure you're using PPTP, StrongVPN recommends unchecking the encryption as it's 'buggy' or something.
Also, Liantong/China Unicom in Beijing seems to constantly change connections, which naturally disconnects the VPN.

I've tried setting up both PPTP and L2TP/IPSec PSK connections, both fail immediately when trying to connect. The Astrill client app fails horribly. It's unable to link libraries ("libstlport_shared.so" is too small to be an ELF executable). It worked on the stock rom...

Yeah, the original rom this is based on was an older / original version of Shohat's rom.
There are now dozens of roms on the chinese sites, no doubt a fairshare are from xda, but probably less buggy than the one you chose
More Roms:
