Your very own DIY stylus is just a few minutes away
Want to boost your Draw Something skills? Here's how to make a stylus for a capacitive touchscreen in four easy DIY steps.
INTRODUCTION
Click to collapse
Capacitive touchscreens are everywhere these days. They're in iPhones, iPads, iPods, Android/Windows smartphones, and all new tablets. Pretty much any mobile touchscreen device that is worth having, now has a capacitive touchscreen.
The fact that the touchscreens are conductive means that your device will only recognise a touch from your finger (or other body part) rather than, for example, the material in your pocket, or sleeve. This in turn means that you cannot use any old pen or nib as a stylus for your touchscreen.
So, because we're good guys here at PC Advisor - and we want to gain any advantage we can on Draw Something - we've looked into how to make a stylus. As it turns out, you can make your own DIY stylus with a few simple items you have lying around the house - and so long as you have a pulse (and therefor a natural electrical current running through your body) you can make your own stylus in a few minutes…and become the king of Draw Something at the same time.

A cotton swab (aka “Q-tip”)
Aluminum foil
Scissors
Tape
A pen
1. Remove the ink from the pen.
2. Cut the cotton swab at a sharp angle and insert it into the mouth of the pen. Secure with tape.
3. Wrap the foil around the neck of the pen, a couple of centimeters above the tip of the cotton swab. Wrap tightly, and secure with tape at the top.
4. Moisten the cotton swab with a drop of water. (No, this will not harm your tablet's or phone's screen.)
That's it! Your stylus is ready for use. Note that your finger must be touching the foil at all times, and if your stylus stops functioning, re-moisten it with a touch of water.

Capacitive Stylus without water or foil
Nice DIY dude...the only downpart is moistening the part again n again....
Well I found a solution here....
1. Alumium bar (easy to hold ones) or any cheap stylus
2. Rubber end from any pen or pencil to attach
More info in video link below....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CrlmTvW_zE

With rubber, it is sometimes too elastic making it sluggish to move.
Alternative of this tutorial, just sharpen any cheap chopstick like a pencil, and soak it with water, dry the stick on the outside and voila it works

Instead of moistening can we just lick it?

Nice tutorial!
IMHO, I like another way better: Stylus-Tutorial
Does not need to be wet and is more precise.

NICE DIY

awesome tut man!

After i do some research, aluminum foil was electric flow from our fingers

Nice one dude.. :good:
Just a little effort & we can create our own stylus

Wow just great
Nahhh
Just awsome!!!!!!!
Sent from my C2104 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

just wondering here if the size of the tip maters the thinner to write will be best and making technical sketches??????

If you want to avoid remoisturing your stylus from time to time, pushing a paperclip (after some bending of it) through the Q-Tip, then making a small curve, pulling it back and fixing it underneath the cotton works well, too, you need just a little bit of presure (not much, i promise if it is done right) to make the paper clip give the capacity to the foil and you don´t need the q-tip to be wet anymore
Oh and as we formed a curve at the front of the paper clip and hide it underneath the cotton there should be no scratching of the screen at all

Remove light scratch from HD2 screen

So i somehow managed to scratch my HD2 screen. Im always careful, and watch where I put it etc.
I only had it in my jeans pocket, so i dont know how it could have happened. No dirt, sand etc in my pocket, so who knows...
Has anyone tried to remove light scratches from the screen? Im thinking of using a light scratch repair kit that a jeweller sells to take out the scratches from like crystal / glass watches. Anyone tried these?
Im not going to use toothpaste, or brasso unless someone else has tried and there are no side effects (like fine swirl marks etc)
thanks.
so you didn't have it in the case, just bare HD2 in your pocket?

that would be correct, a phone in a clean cloth pocket....
I carry mine the same way.
Are you sure it's a scratch, and not a raised residue mark of some kind? Maybe try 50/50 water/vinegar mix just to be sure?
if it's a really light scratch (i.e. your nail doesn't catch it), you get cerium oxide and a buffing wheel and polish it. if it is deep, you have to sand it and things might get ugly. good luck.
^^ sanding it would be a HORRIBLE idea... lol i'm not sure if that was a joke response or what....
no, im not sanding it
Its what id class as a light scratch, that my finger nail runs over it and doesnt catch.
My grandad had a scratch on his watch he sat for hours polishing with a soft cloth and spit (yeughh) but it worked ! worth a try & It's FREE !!

wet sanding with a very fine grit sand paper is not a joke. horrible it may sound, but it's the last option for glass screens like iphone, ipod etc when they have deep scratches. you can verify it yourself by googling it.

Hi!
You need cerium oxide. The glassworks use it to remove crystals stripes.
You must mix the cerium oxide with water, apply with cotton on the screen, making strong pressure.
But you need a hard work to remove the crystal stripes. I need an entire afternoon to do it.
Be aware, because you are going to get wet and dirty phone.
You will notice the screen to remain with a siege where you have been.
Then I apply rain-x, is a product for crystal car that does water slipping: http://www.rainx.com/Products/Windshield_Treatment/Original.aspx.

Im not sure what you mean by remove the crystal stripes? I only want to remove a very light scratch.
By a siege remaining i think you mean there will be a small low spot where you polish?
Im still not sure why you put rain-x on the screen afterwards though...
simply apply a display protection foil (of good quality). most od them let scratches disappear. NOT KIDDING!

+1 I also carry mine the same way.
I have successfully removed shallow scratches from a glass watch face by polishing using metal polish applied on a cotton bud.
This may not be as ideal as a dedicated jewellers polish but at least it uses materials that many people already have.
The metal polish contains mild abrasives and the small cotton bud helps keep the polish localised and not cover the article being polished.
Be warned, it takes a long time though, but generally it seems that any method that takes a long time is less likely to cause damage !

If you rub the screen really vigorously with some really course sandpaper, for a looooooooooooooooooooong time then you won't be able to see the scratch any more
Meh, 'i take my hat of to you', ive had my phone in my pocket for months, sometimes alongside keys or headset (whoops) but no scratch yet, front nor back.
Toothpaste wont even work, like mentioned before this really is glass, your best bet is wet sanding (and ye, be careful with that) or some similar way to polish glass.
Or you try and get the resin used to repair car windshields (HPX2?) seeing how that basically fills cracks in windshields, filling/hiding a scratch should be possible? im not sure though, ask around a bit before doing that, best go for the wet sanding
well i tried brasso. The main thing i was worried about was causing more minor swirl marks, but it went ok. Only did it for about 20 mins though and it went from running my nail over it and feeling it without catching to running my nail over it without feeling it. Its still just as visible however. No swirl marks left from the brasso either.
I think the next step would be the cerium oxide powder. Might use the Dremel i have with the powder on a small polishing pad and see how that goes...it definitely needs a lot more time, or power tools to help remove it.
Wow careful there, the dremel is a powertool, it might sand/polish with to much power, sure its a ***** to do it by hand, but thats still the best possible way

Atrix Paint Job

hey everyone. i wanted to do this after i chipped a piece of the finish off of my battery cover. so here it goes
INSTRUCTIONS
1) (OPTIONAL) get a coin or something and carefully scrape the logos off of your phone.
2) get an x-acto knife and some contact paper and whatever picture you want on your phone
3) i used a piece of cardboard to cut on. (a cutting mat would be better). tape down your picure. and tape a piece of contact paper over it (make sure the contact paper is bigger then your phone)
4) carefully cut out the image you want.
5) when you are done, peal off the sticky side, take the battery cover off of your phone and stick the contact paper to it.
6) make sure you have spray paint that is friendly with plastics or just a good multi surface spray will do. (thats what i used) and here is where i went wrong so read carefully. the atrix is a glossy phone. so to start shake the paint really well. also you should do 2-3 thin layers of paint. i did 1 slightly thick layer becuase a thin layer didnt cover the whole thing. (it was late, i was excited and i was inpatient(DONT BE LIKE ME ))
when i say layer. spray it on. wait a little while then do it again. im not a painter or an artist so im not the best at this stuff.
anyways.
7) let it dry to the point that its not runny but before its fully dry remove the contact paper so you dont take the paint off with it.
let it sit for as long as your spray paint takes to dry. and enjoy
side notes.
i used 2 dots of sticky tack to mask out the eyes because i couldnt cut out a pen tip sized piece of contact paper. the sticky tack reacted with the paint and became really soft and hard to remove. even hrs later. so. only uses that if its your only option. it does work though.
also... i used uv reactant paint. it lights up nicely under black lights
everything used for this mod cost about $12
if anyone has any questions ill be happy to help to the best of my abilities

I am kinda scared to paint mine so far, since it's nearly new. but if i get the back scratches, it's certainly an interesting route to take.
Im definitely trying this mine is scratched. And that looks cool. Excuse my ignorance but is contact paper a special type of paper?

i used contact paper because it a great material to cut stencils/masks out of. it sticks to the surface. closes all gaps. and comes off clean. plus you can cut it to almost any size and it doesnt tear easily.

[TUTORIAL] Pimp your Desire HD!

Hey guys,
I've seen the chromed Desire HD on the XDA front page and thought it was totally awesome. So i did it with my own phone too, but i wanted something extra, so i've also painted some stuff.
And maybe some more people want to do it but don't know how.. That's the reason i've made this short tutorial
And also post your own results in this topic
Let's start the pimping:
First up is removing this little sticker and pull out the volume button thingy with some tweezers or a small screwdriver

The next step is removing the GPS antenna. This is the small rubber piece that also holds the plastic glass for the dual LED's.
This is a hard piece to remove and i don't have pictures of this procedure. But i think the best way is to carefully open/push away the 8 plastic pins on the sides of the rubber with a sharp stanley knife. I started at the top and went round the entire think. Slowly it will pop out of the body.
Then you have to remove 5 screws with a small skrewdriver thing. I tried some of mine until one fitted. Don't know witch size it is exactly.
After you've removed the 5 screws you can carefully remove the body from the phone. You have to tilt it a little bit because the light sensor (the most right dot at the side of the speaker grill) is a little bit sunk into the body.
The next step is to remove all the small little pieces from the aluminium piece.
The camera cover has 4 little metal taps that you have to fold a little bit to the inside, then it will fall out of the body.
The other 3 things are easily to remove, their held in place with some double sticky tape stuff.
Now it's time to sand the thing until you've got the result you want. I didn't want to have it really shiny so i stopped when i got a nice brushed look. But if you want to have it shine you just have to keep sanding (up to grid 2500).
I've started with a sandpaper with grid size 200. After all the paint was gone i've wet sanded with 400 and after that 800. These are my results:
When i was sanding i noticed the HTC logo letters were falling out
I removed them. After the sanding I've painted them black with a very fluid paint so it will fill up the gap nicely. The excess paint you can easily sand away with grid 800.
In the meantime when the paint had to dry i roughened up the surface of the small pieces and prepared them fore a paint job.
After two layers of standard spray paint (color mat traffic red) i noticed i didn't like the red speaker grill. It was just ugly. So i've sanded the paint off of the piece and painted it black
The next step would be to glue the small pieces back on the body. I don't know exactly what glue it was. But it's glue that is pretty fluid and dries up pretty quickly. The English translation would be 'secondglue' but i don't know that's the right description ^^
Have fun modding your Desire HD and show me your results
Regards, Bas

but if ill do it, i know ill kill my phone

I was bored at work and decided to play with a stationery knife...
If you use a stylus often you must know how freaking hard to find button sometimes, especially in the dark. Roughness will help to find a button much faster.
wow this is good too !! so ur thumb will be able to feel the button !! if u guys do not wanna scatch can try pasting a thin sticker... it helps too
all it does im guessing is let you find the button easier.
Since its so smooth and small i and a lot of people have trouble finding the button without looking down at the pen.
If you carve a little pattern into the button youll be able to feel the differance really easily so youll know when your finger is on it.
i might pick up a 2nd Spen and give it a try
Wouldnt it better, just have thin glowing tape and tape it on the button?
That way, can see in when dark too.
good thinking
but i dont wanna my pan look like this
is there any different way?
the glow sticker wont work because it wont get enough light throughout the day to work in the dark since its dark inside the compartment.
other options could be cutting a piece of di-noc carbon film and putting on the button.
Omg.
Just hold it as a normal pen, then twist it a little til u here/feel the click..

You could put a little liquid paper into the grooves that you cut to highlight the button as well.
Might do that myself, as it is I barely use the pen at all... Anything will be an improvement.

I was thinking about putting a thin coat of glittery silver fingernail polish on the button.
I had exactly the same idea. But then I realized that the button is placed in the direction of the ending hook of the stylus and the need for cutting/brushing the button was irrelevant since then for me. Quick glimps on hook tells me where the button is and short roll between fingers is also matter of fraction of a second. But your solution is definetely quicker

Feels awesome and feels like you are writing with a normal pen.. i like it, so here how2build your own.
What you need:
- one of these guys (or similiar) (just the cap.)
- the grip from another pen
1. you have to remove the cover / top of the cap, so you get a tube.
2. pull the grip over it
top:
bottom:
3. ofc pull the whole thing over your stylus =) (not too much, you want to be able to remove it later!)
4. have fun

I actually use a pencil with mine most of the time... if the tip isn't too sharp it works almost flawlessly, and it glides over the screen very nicely and doesn't hurt the screen at all. I even bought some FullHB pencils (they're solid graphite, no wood) to use, and they seem to work even better than a standard pencil.
I just dug up the old full graphite pencils from my art school days and I have to agree: they are amazing stylusses (styli?).
Then I decided to go one better: I got a mechanical pencil with some nice fat leads (I went for 3mm HB koh-i-noors). Now I can retract the vulnerable graphite for safer traveling and still have an amazing and precice hard-tip stylus.
I might just take apart the official stylus and replace the rubber with a bit of graphite, but I'm not entirely comfortable storing that inside the tablet.

I had tried just a regular cheap mechanical pencil, and they don't work at all... probably because the lead is too thin and/or the casing is plastic and doesn't carry the conductivity to your hand. Glad you liked the pencil idea, though! Oh, and yes, it is styli
This is cool.
