G3 Speaker grill - G3 General

Have you guys noticed that when you take off the back cover that the speaker grill is quite large, but the phone cover hole restrains the speaker to 1/3 of its actual size. As a result the speaker sounds better with the back cover off. Why didn't LG just make the back cover hole bigger, now I'm thinking of taking a blade to my back cover!

i tested mine with and without the battery cover and there is no difference at all

Yes, can't really hear any difference either...

How I improved the Mytouch 3G camera

Hey guys, I'm an avid photo enthusiast. I've been less than impressed with the Mytouch 3G camera sharpness to say the least. With apps like "FXcamera" and "vignette" ive been using the phone to take little artsy snap shots more and more.
Today i realized when i took my battery cover off the camera sharpness improved 100X!!! so much better! The crappy flimsy plastic that HTC used in the battery cover is naturally foggy and causes light to streak in pictures.
So in the end i took an Xacto knife and removed the little plastic window from my battery door.
My phone can now take sharp pictures all the time.
I thought I'd share this bit of info! Try it yourself... take a couple shots without the battery cover! Hope this can help my fellow frustrated MT3G owners
don't know about the MT3G, but the Magic (Vodafone) doesn't have any foil on the camera hole on the battery cover...
but though, thanks for sharing

Not talking about the foil. Talking about actually removing the plastic glass thats attached to the battery cover. So theres just a hole instead of having "glass". that little peice of fake glass destroys the cameras quality. if you take a couple shots without your battery door you'll notice a huge improvment.

I think he was saying that the Magic already has a hole in the battery cover, there is no fake glass piece
might be a good tip for MT3G users though!
Your not worried about the camera lens itself getting dirty? I love taking pics too and they always seem to have a hazy/foggy look. I always used a q-tip to clean the peep hole but now I'm considering your method too.

i tried everything to clean the little plastic peice, even expencive pro lens fluid (called Eclipse).
I think the plastic is just cheap and will always be foggy.
The lens on the camera inside is pretty heavy duty and set back about 1/8" from the cover... so its pretty impossible to hit it with anything. Its also easier to clean that lens than the battery door lens. It really makes a huuuge difference
Yea I noticed a huge differencealso, and I was able to just push out the lens cover out of the battery door with my thumbnail. But Im just afraid it will I will fog up the camera lense too like dust, sweat, pocket lint, etc. Ill just take the battery door off when I take my pictures unless I can find something to replace the lense cover, like some other piece of plastic or something I can glue onto the back. Ill post any solutions.
Took the plastic cover off as well. Wow, now I will actually use my camera...it was pointless before. Crapy design HTC.

That's odd, my Rogers HTC Magic doesn't have a glass pane on my battery cover.
Taken with my phone.

No I beleive the OP is referring to the glass or plastic cover over the camera area of the back cover.
My HTC Magic from vodafone UK doesn't have this but I would imagine removing it would be better
I did this and yes the picture quality improves but the music now sounds less deep, less bass.
Try it and cover the hole with your finger and you will see what I mean.

He is holding his battery cover..
A battery cover is to.. cover a battery to make sure it doesn't fall out. He is holding the right object and mine does not have it either.
i broke down and took out the plastic thing, no problem with the lens getting dirty so far.
my vodafone magic doesn't have the protective lens cover on the battery cover.
it does however have a lens protector covering the lens on the actual body of the phone.
it takes pretty good photos though, so maybe it's made of a different material than on the MT3G?
Yeah not a good idea at all...
Do you think that htc putted the plastic cover there just so it would look fancy?
Guess not.. This is not modding... it is actually kinda dumbing.. Give it a week or two.. and then check for all the dust that you're going to have in there...
And lets not talk about a rainy day... The phone probably will go RIP...
So if I were you all.. Ill stay wit the piece of plastic... That my opinion

Actually, HTC didn't put it on their branded Magics... Vodafone's and Rogers' Magics don't have it either... only the myTouch 3G

Since I "modded" the phone i have not had a problem with dust or anything like that. Thats what concerned me the most before I did it. And as for a rainy day, I know better than to take my phone out into the rain.

Lol who would go and take pics in the rain with their phone anyway?
You could always remove the battery cover when you take pictures, it might seem odd, but that way you won't have to remove that plastic piece, but you do risk getting your lense dirty faster even if you do remove the cover for a minute or so.
or.... we could just seek out a better replacement.
don't they make clearer plastics we could use to replace this?

Creaky plastic

Anyone else noticing how bad the plastic battery cover is on this phone? Everytime i hold it creaks. Doesnt make it feel like a quality device. Anyone else in the same boat of do i have a crappy back cover?
Not creaky here...nice tight fit
Mine fits great as well. No issues.
Ive taken the back cover off at least 20 times since the 8th. My phone feels solid, no creaky feel what so ever.
Same as with everyone else, my phone feels and sounds solid. No creaks here.
only if I really try to make it creak.

maybe you cover is not snapped on all the way??
mine is also fine..
Yea i think that im going to get another battery cover. Mine is creaky towards the bottom left. Almost like its not snapping together correctly. The main reason i returned the HTC Surround was for the creaky battery cover. It gave me nightmares because i dealt with a G1 for 2 years with that problem.
never had a creak but i would suggest getting a tight fit cover for the phone. Mine is red and black and the brand is case mate...awesome cover to protect my sweet ass phone!
I've noticed I get some creak in the top left corner above the camera, nothing major though since I never hold the phone by that corner.
I would say it's a faulty cover (return/exchange the phone) or it hasn't seated or snapped into place properly even though it looks like it's in place.
It is plastic and makes the phone super light weight.
I returned mine and got one back in which the cover is perfect.
Also, the screen is a bit brighter (same settings) and the audio sounds a bit better. I also ordered a screen protector and case (smoke plastic) which works great.
The phone is very impressive now.

Film covering speaker!

Hi,
I've had the phone for a couple of months now . . . . but only just noticed there was a piece of plastic film covering the speaker!
Peeled off easliy, much easier than the piece on the camera lense (which I did find straight away!) Can't believe I've only just noticed it, but then I don't take the back off much I suppose.
May help some one else, so thought I'd own up to my idiocy!

That piece of film didnt cover the speaker on my i9505. It did however cover the edges around the speaker.

I believe that is just a protective skin/mesh to prevent dust from falling into the speaker holes...so imo u shudnt hv done that..

No, the mesh is still there. It was the same protective plastic that was on the lense, back and sides of the phone. Deffo not a permanent type .

Back Cover Opened and is not firm

hey
i bought this phone a week ago and after using it i realized some creaking sound in the middle of the back cover. so i viewed some threads and decided to open the back cover and see whats going on. i used my fingernail to open it and a credit card to snap it out. did it 3 times and came of like a charm and no crack sound or so. no i have installed it again and put it together from the bottom because i though its the best fit. now the creak sound is gone but i have a little(by little i mean really really little) gap between the back cover and the body. its on the two sides of the phone where there are antennas connecting to the back cover. its not a big one but when i press there it makes a little sound.i was wondering if i had damaged it or its because its opened and its something normal
thanks

A Peak Inside the Priv

Just thought you all would like to take a little look under the cover of the Blackberry Priv. Apologies for image quality and lack of complete disassembly, I didn't want to burn my bridges for the warranty just for opening the back cover. If any of you are braver than I and feel like delving deeper, taking the cover is very easy. Just pry the left and right sides away with your fingernails so it is loose. Remove the SD card and SIM card tray. Then very carefully pry the top of the cover away from the device. Then simply slide the slightly tilted cover off the bottom, away from the speakers. From there you can see all the goods! I was just curious if I could find a discernible difference between the Samsung S series antennas and the Priv, for the sake of future MFT compatibility. It seems as though they both have the same antennas so the hardware difference must be chip-level. Bummer. Also you can see why the right side gets so hot with the battery and antennas sitting there.

What does the front bottom look like? I'm curious how big the speaker is.

...Giggedy!!
The front bottom is taken up by the speaker assembly, it's relatively large; it fills the entire bottom lip of the back case.
Do you have a US or EU model?
Thanks. I've been waiting for internal shots.

I have the US model from AT&T.
I was thinking about opening the back and filling the empty space that plague the non-wireless charging variants of this phone

Can you test the speaker? Reports online, including my own Priv, only the left works(Mono), but in this picture it shows the Priv having both Left and Right speakers. Can you take a picture of the front of the phone where the speakers are?
I'm confused as to why they would include L & R stereo speakers but only the Left works, is the R disabled? or did we all get Priv's that are defective. I had a feeling the whole bottom was a speaker grill, and this confirms it......
The whole bottom is definitely not a speaker. It's only the left third or so.

I also want to know the answer to this. Are units defective? It definitely shows two so why does everyone only hear mono sound from the left?
I don't think there's anything of the sort going on. Based on the pictures, since I'm not confident enough to peel the back off my own Priv, it looks like the thing you see on the right (left in the pic) is the control board for the 3.5mm jack combined with the mic, which presumably exists down there, since there's no other spot at the bottom of the unit where a mic could possibly be. It definitely only has the one speaker, but as far as I'm concerned, it's pretty exceptional for a phone. At least, I have no qualms with the sound from it, certainly much louder than any other phone I've had.
Forgot to add, I'm also confident that there's only one speaker because using Poweramp and toggling the Mono output setting, as well as the balance from Left to Right, everything only sounds like it comes from the one speaker.
Sorry guys, my mistake. I hadn't even tested my speakerphone until today. I based my assumption on the fact there is a baffle material under the span of the case baffle and the "L" and "R" label on the plastic assemblies on the board. I hadn't tried to disassemble it further. There is someone on YouTube that will give a complete teardown in a couple of days so if I don't see it posted I'll crack my phone open again to investigate.
That escalated quickly

Just remove from the case and pull plastic button inserts out. Take a mini philips screwdriver like for eyeglasses and scrape the little piece of plastic out on both sides. There will be 2 on left and 2 on right then use super glue to adhere the plastic buttons directly to where the little plastic pieces were above and below the buttons. It works for me and no indentions.

Should have done that before but I am humanly struggling with my "OCD" and trying to forget about it, but will leave it like that as the damage is already done and I really want to save the hassle with an exchange.
Thanks for the tip anyways

I think they addressed the problem because the rivets on the one I received the other day were flat as heck and did not protrude like photos I've seen. There wasn't anything to cut with an exacto even if I wanted to. It's still a plastic piece of junk though ($40?!) and I decided to just use a pocket pouch...brings me back to the G1 days
