[Q] Where have the symbols gone on my keyboard?! - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well, this is weird! I have NOT switched the keyboard and am using the default Samsung one.
First few days using the Note 3, I had this AWESOME keyboard which had a tiny symbol as a secondary function of any button. I could easily pick all sorts of punctuation and symbols. Now, it's GONE! I can only see the usual letters & numbers and, for symbols, I must go click the symbol button.
How can I fix this? I want the keyboard with symbols as the alternate for letters in all places where I use the keyboard. I even had the feeling that it learned what symbols I use more often and had replaced less used symbols.
Clues?
Thank you!

Well try the keyboard settings in language and input first. .. maybe something switched...

Nothing seems to have changed and I can't even find any setting related to symbols. I even tried to reset settings. No luck .

If phone is rooted can use xposed module samsung alt symbols. Or try to delete either feature.xml ir others.xml in system/csc if both files are in the folder. If only 1 do not delete anything. Backup both before delete.

I believe your phone may have installed some major update (with or without asking you). At this point to re-enable that you will probably need to root first and then edit a (text) file - search around for a thread describing just that.

I had this happen to me when I installed wanam exposed. Under system you have an option that says "enable keyboard symbol" this option has to be checked.

And if you're not rooted, there's always SwiftKey. Free now, too.

Thanks lildoggs, I did what you said and it worked. My symbols are back! Hooooooraaaay! . Thanks to Rosli59564 too for the file tips. Luckily Xposed fixed it.
I am SURE that I did not uncheck that. Most probably it somehow reset my settings when I first started Wanam Xposed (which I did start some days ago).
Well, all is good now. Thanks for replying, all of yous .

HELP! Keyboard stuck in Korean. edit: problem fixed. mods pls close

I left my phone unlocked and it set the keyboard to korean while inside my pocket. I can't switch to any other keyboard: swype, android, standard, etc. Holding the gear icon on the lower left just displays the korean keyboard settings but shows no place to change the keyboard.
Try starting phone in safe mode and uninstall it ...or uninstall whichever keyboard you have got it stuck in korean
go into settings, locale and text and select a keyboard from there....

going into locale & text just takes you into the settings for each keyboard, or enable/disable keyboards from being selected. the keyboard selection should be when you hold the option button on the keyboard. when you do this while the korean keyboard is loaded, it takes you to the korean kb settings, instead of a popup that lets you select other keyboards like android, swype, etc.
i appreciate the replies. i've tried everything and it seems that once you switch to the korean keyboard, there's no going back... unless i'm missing something

Just long press in the writing area when you're typing something and then the selection menu pops up!! Then you can switch your keyboard. Hope it helps
Hi there, when I first got my phone during setup and being a total novice with touch screens I managed to set the phone up to an Indian/Asian language. I fiddled around for ages and couldn't do anything.
My solution... take out battery and sim, try another sim so the phone has to register that one and gives you the language in its attempt to set it up. Get the little bugger back to English and stick your other sim back in. It worked for me so I hope maybe it helps for you too.
Edit
If that doesn't work how about find the settings picture (assume they are the same) then Locale and Text is 11th tab down and select locale is the first tab on the next screen. Just had a google translate on English into Korean so you can try and pick up the right language....'yeong-eo' is the translation or '영어'

Yes, but you changed the whole language. He just has to chage the keyboard, his language is correct.
To change keyboards try my solution above. It worked for me when i was getting mad with chinese Keboard to get back to standard.
I thought he had tried changing the input method and keyboard but that hadn't worked. Thought it might need forcing back to English or something. My apologies if I misunderstood.
As another thought how about downloadiing Jonasl's HTC_IME keyboard from this site and seeing if you can get that to force its way into action over the korean one when you run the app from your file manager?
Thanks for the replies. holding on the input area did the trick. I was used to holding the option button on the standard button but this eems to be an alternate method. I'm a total idiot lol. Normally this would've been something i'd figure out on my own. Thanks guys. guess i still need to get used to the OS.

Don't mention it! It happened to me too and someone told me how to fix it. Now I tell it to you. It's just a chain. It's your turn to tell the trick to someone else who needs it, LOL

Swype Dictionary help

I'm still having problems with my swype dictionary not actually deleting words even after I delete them. My MAIN one is my swype will type ti instead of to and it drives me insane!
I have tried running both the new and old swype with the same result. Any ideas?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
are you deleting the word by highlighting the offending then pressing the "swype" button, or by deleting it from the user dictionary?
Whenever I delete by highlighting, then pressing the "swype" button, they stay gone.
Fyi the easiest way to highlight the word is to type it then swype from the "swype" button to the "sym" button then press "select text" then use the arrows.
If that doesn't work then I don't know what to say
Yeah I am deleting it by highlighting it and pressing the swype key.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Are you doing it from the messaging app? It didn't work for me doing it that way, I had to remove a word after highlighting it in the address bar or an email or something.

This may be a stupid question, but are you ALWAYS swyping(word?) or do you sometimes type without dragging your finger? I'm constantly deleting the same words because my thumbs like to typo when I type vs swype. I have noticed that if it's a typo, the swype dictionary loves to store it then throw it out there when you are actually using swype. It's apparently very new word hungry.

thats the only way i know how to add words to the dictionary for swype is to manually type the words in however, the words that im deleting are not being typed after deletion and they still are showing up. i dont understand what would be causing this.

That's really weird. I guess maybe you may want to flash your phone back to stock and redo your rom. maybe something is corrupt. Other than that I'm at a loss. Sorru I couldn't be more of a help.

Multi Window

I can't seem to be able to use the keyboard to type in the top app when I use multi-window. Pressing any key reverts me to the app on the bottom half of the screen. I'm using Swiftkey btw. Anyone know fixes? Thanks in advance.

I believe when you are using Stock Keyboard, you can detach it and move around when in Multiwindow mode. But i don't know about SwiftKey, play around in it's settings and see...

Wow bro i was exactly in this moment post this issue.
I have the problem to i cant type in the upper app whatever the app is, i also use siwftkey. Have you find any solution? this happened to me after upgrading to kitkat sm-n900.
I tried undocking swiftkey and it worked, but it can be the complete solution. There are some pics of different apps , another issue is that when i want to edit the multiwindow apps the option to go play store is not available.
I don´t know were to look, if any of you know something please share
Thanks
Nope, sorry man. Currently i'm just sticking to swapping the top screen with the bottom whenever I need to type. Tedious though
I have this issue too. I noticed that the stock keyboard doesn't have this problem.
As a temporary solution I used tasker with the note buddy plugin to automatically switch the SwiftKey keyboard to stock.
I know it's just not the best solution since you always have to pull out the s pen, but it's something.
For those who don't have tasker, there's the SpenBoardswitcher.

Has there been and solutions or updates to this? Driving me nuts. I noticed that after I updated my note 3 to 4.4.2 on att this issue presented itself
Swiftkey doesn't support Multiwindow. It has never officially done so.
Ugh. Quite frustrating but it is what it is. Thanks for the response.

[Q] Samsung Keyboard no longer has long press options?

Hi there! It's been quite a while since I've posted to XDA. But recently I have had an issue with my Note 3 where the long press shortcuts on the samsung keyboard have disappeared, which sucks because I love that keyboard. Before you start throwing out "Just use such and such keyboard" I have swiftkey installed and I think the samsung keyboard was a lot faster for me personally to type on. Also I have already uninstalled the keyboard and reinstalled it for the same problem. Thanks for any info you guys have!

Apon looking at further posts found out that you can install Wanam Xposed and goto System then scroll down till you find Enable Keyboard Symbols then restart hope it helps
If you have wanam installed, it injects the Korean build.prop and I'm pretty sure that it canceled it out. You'll most likely have to edit build.prop to enable it again, but I haven't used Samsung keyboard since Fleksy came along.
I had this same problem after installing Wanam xposed. If u go into wanam settings under system and uncheck show keyboard symbols then reboot. Go back in again and recheck it and reboot again it will fix it....This about drove me crazy until I figured it out! Hope this helps
There is a separate xposed mod for the long press symbols called Samsung alt symbols. Also there is Samsung short delay to speed up the long press delay

Remove Keyboard Notification When Keyboard Is Used?

I have a A2017U on B27 Stock that's unlocked, rooted, and with Xposed.
I use three Google keyboards: English, Japanese, and Korean. Whenever the keyboard opens, I'll have a notification that allows switching between the three. It's irrelevant since each of the keyboards has a button to switch between them anyways. Has anyone found a way to remove it?
I've read that deleting all keyboards except one fixes this, which is obviously not a solution. I've also read that this is a notification built into the Android ROM, but there are individual phone model specific fixes for it. If anyone has found an Axon 7 solution please let me know.
Also, anyone know how to remove this globe button from the keyboard? It switches between my three keyboards, but it's redundant since long pressing the Space bar key does the same action. I often press it accidentally when trying to type a comma or a space.
Hey I was able to achieve this was by manually deleting the stock keyboard with a file explorer except the google one; aka only leaving ONE keyboard. I don't think you can do that without deleting all other keyboards. As you can see from the screenshot, I don't have any keyboard notifications.
You could try http://repo.xposed.info/module/biz.underpants_gnomes.android.xposed.mods.hidexposedime and see if it works. About the globe, I have no idea.
Get Swift keyboard, it has language packs download.

Yeah I mentioned in my post I found that info, and it's not a solution when you need to type in three different languages.

Thank you!!! Worked like a charm! Also read on its Xposed page description that Cyanogenmod can do this natively without an app/module. Good to know once we get an official CM ROM.
No need for xposed.
It's a notification to ask you to choose a keyboard. Click the notification, click choose keyboards at the bottom, disable keyboards you are not using. Done.

Again for the second time, if you'd read the OP this is not a solution for anyone who types in multiple languages. Thankfully member awsomjgp provided an Xposed module solution that fits the original requirements.
