That's great news! Only thing that I really don't like about my Moto G is the lack of a SD slot. Google don't like the idea of using SD cards on phones, maybe that's why our Moto Gs didn't have slot when they were released.
I don't think I will buy another Moto G right away, but a Moto G2 will probably come out by the end of the year and will have a SD slot.
Motorola rocks.

Also about the SD card....Moto has re enabled the "move to SD card" feature of androids...so you can move apps to SD without any root or 3rd party app

Can some developer answer this for me:
To my knowledge the hardware (SoC, modem) is the same as in the "old" Moto G, if it is so, will it be possible to enable the LTE?

It would be interesting to see how the IO performance and overall performance would be with external SD card enabled . IO is pretty speedy with the embedded SD card.

I just hope Motorola doesn't forget the other variants like Samsung does.
Keeping variaty of devices to a minimum is the best thing Motorola can do right now to keep devices updated.
Galaxy S5 is barely out and there are already news of 5 different S5 variants in the making and only the Original S5 will get updated.

Since so many of these devices get abandoned so quickly by the manufacturer, buying the "cheap" ones (sub $300) like the Moto G is part of my strategy.
If the Moto G loses support in a year, hopefully there will just be another ~$200 device to jump to by then.

How difficult do you guys think it will be for developers to get the current roms/kernels over onto this new lte model?

Ordered the Moto G yesterday, and Motorola would not cancel my order. I guess I am gonna need to return and re-order the LTE version. This is exactly what I need for T-Mobile.
The non LTE version of the Moto G doesn't make sense anymore, IMO. Its either the LTE Moto G or E.

I don't really care about the new Moto G. The only difference is the SD card slot and LTE. I store all my files on the cloud so 16GB is more than enough for me. The battery on the new Moto G is the same so I suspect that the LTE will destroy the battery. I get about 12mbps down and 5 up on 3g, that's more than enough. Also my battery lasts all day.

Quite an interesting turn of events, especially considering it's got KitKat on it and that has issues with microSD cards for a lot of apps and purposes. Regardless, it does make the Moto G a damned fine device I suppose, but honestly my Galaxy Express is still way ahead of it in my opinion. Might be a slight bit less powerful with a slightly older processor (dual 1.5 Krait) and lacking that HD resolution (Galaxy Express is 800x480) but I paid $80 for this thing and it's been rock solid since day one with an official CM11 build (just hitting M6) so I'm good to go.
Besides, the Wolfson DAC in this thing more than makes up for any potential shortcomings.

So am I right in assuming that this new version comes only in 8GB and has the microSD card slot?
and there WON'T be a 16GB with microSD card slot?

I just ordered the Moto G as well, and Motorola won't cancel.
What they will do:
* ship it to me.
* provide pre-paid FedEx shipping label to ship it back.
* give me a 100% refund
Yes, they are paying to ship it twice instead of just cancelling it.

Cheapest DECENT Android smartphone in 2015

I've seen the specs and I believe this is going to be the cheapest usable Android smartphone in 2015.

I've bought one today for my dad. However I read someone mention on gsm arena that this Moto G is going to be rubbish compared to previous versions, because its made by Lenovo and not Google. Is this something to be concerned about or just a random opinion from a Google fan?

That makes no sense.
As far as I understand, Lenovo just bought Motorola to get access to the NA/EU phone market.
Why would it mess with the internal workings of a company that's been around longer than Lenovo's parent company???
Manufacturing shouldn't change from when it was owned by Google, who bought it for patent and manufacturing reasons.

I'm a little surprised there isn't more talk about the device on here. I'm currently on the iPhone 6 Plus but want to get myself the Moto G to play with and use as a back up.

If you are talking about IBM, IBM doesn't own Lenovo. Also, IBM has been around (not called IBM back then) since the 1890's, where Motorola has only been around since the 1920's.

This is far away from the cheapest decent android phone in my city(Hong Kong)
There are Xiaomi,Mizhu(?),Huawei,ASUS(for the zenphone 2 with 4gb ram,13mp camera, full hd display,5.x display and sell with about the same price as moto g did off -contract)
And you can buy even OnePlus One in any retail smartphone shop

Jeff, which version did you review; was it the unlocked US XT1540? I was hoping the charging cable was a two piece set; micro USB and walk plug.

Firstly I wasn't talking about IBM. IBM sold Lenovo it's PC unit and IBM now focuses on services for the backbone/back office of the internet and intranets.
Back on topic -
Motorola for the second time has released a new phone that was GSM only first and then re-release with a few updated and adds an LTE radio.
The 2nd gen LTE Moto G was too expensive for a terrible camera. My Radiant has a bad enough camera but I used it for work anyway and still got decent pictures.
I opted to fix my Optimus G which I dropped on the screen side and it shattered = $155; as I was having space issues despite installing Link2SD on my Radiant.
This was back in May, I couldn't afford to wait for Motorola to announce an updated 3rd gen Moto G with the LTE radio.
Now I am dealing with a screen that has a mind of it's own. I can no longer make or take calls as the screen goes dark completely and I have no access to the dial or other phone controls. I used to get around this by connecting it to my BT headphones but that stopped working. The only way it works with the screen on now is -
1) Connected to the BT in my Panasonic Link2Cell cordless
2) My Car's BT (factory)
That's just the tip of the problems I have now. Otherwise the phone works fine.
I will keep it around for it's camera and video capabilities.
Now the decision is -
1) Moto G for $180 but it's skimpy on RAM and internal memory
2) Moto G for $219 but it's hardly better than the Asus Zenphone 2
I am leaning towards the Zenphone 2 actually because it seems to work well in low light. As I said I use my phone for work and while store lights are overall fine, the light isn't bright like a sunshine or controlled lighting under more ideal conditions.
Actually I should get a phone with optical stabilization since I don't have the calmest hands in the world and it sometimes takes two or three shots for get a sharp picture.
The One Plus Two has that, but not the Moto X? Hmmm... Not sure I want to shell out $400 for a phone though, I have other pressing priorities.

the MOTO is one thing I'd like to try.. Never own one and based on several reviews, they're looking good. I'm leaning for the cheaper one. I think it's aint a bad idea after all

I just came from Moto G 2014. Was using Titan Prime Rom + Greenify donation + Custom kernel + Xposed + Amplify + Tasker. The phone sucked on stock but I made it a beast for the last few months. However, I couldn't resist the camera, battery and ram upgrade and traded in my 2014 and got the G 2015 and I have used it only for a day but I can tell without a doubt, I find it smoother than my G 2014 (the tweaked one). Everything runs the way it is supposed to and I've about 40 odd apps installed and it still runs without any lag or jitters and the battery life is good. Been using it from noon today (it is 10.45p.m. here), battery is down to 56% and 3 hours 10 mins of SOT and out of this 1.5hrs I downloaded 40 apps on a very slow WiFi. So yeah, very happy with the phone as of now.

No NFC in 2015...

If you are not willing to shell out $500 (or more) for a phone, then you shouldn't expect to get a great camera with OIS. At least not now. In a few months the S6 will come down in price.

Not denying that, I just didn't want a worse camera than my current phone.
It won't come down that much, an LG G3 is now $399 unlocked (AT&T) and the G2 is about $280.

I've an offer for a new Moto X (black, 16 GB memory) for a stipulated price about 180€ (200$). What do you think about the device today? Does it make sense to buy the Moto X for this price today? I like really the size of the phone and can't find another one with good hardware specifications on the market as the Moto X has. Can you told me something about the performance with Lollipop, the camera and the battery life? Will the Moto X get the new Android M, too?

my opinion is $200 is a little high, you did not mention what model, i bought a new xt1053 developers edition 32gb on ebay about 6 or 8 months ago for $199 ant its retail gsm unlocked with the ability to unlock the bootloader, we have 4 xt1058 att's here and all updated to lollipop and so far the only issues with one device is some lost contacts after the ota, not to much of a deference in battery life, there is a noticeable difference in performance due to running on art (i would say), amazon has the gsm unlocked which im sure is the xt1058 black for $115 and white for $118, just put this (Motorola Moto X - 16GB, Unlocked Phone) in amazon search bar

Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot to say that I'm from Germany and only the XT1052 is available here. Of course the device is unlocked. The actually price is about 240€ and more (amazon, ebay and so one) here in Germany. So I think that my 180€ offer should be a good deal.

I just think that the price might be okay Would you buy the device one again for this price? Or would you prefer another one?! Maybe the Moto G 3rd Gen. The price for this one is about 230€*for the 16GB model with 2 GB RAM (without MotoMaker).

Well I've just bought one. I picked up a very good condition one off eBay this week for £87. I got it yesterday. I have to say I'm impressed with the build and form factor.
I was using a Nexus S for about 3 years and decided that it was time for an upgrade, event though I loved that phone to bits.
I wanted to spend max £100 and buy something I could flash a ROM on, so I went for a Samsung S3. It's a nice phone but just hate the home button with a vengeance and the capacitive buttons. They make the phone way too big. I guess I just hate big phone. They just don't do anything for me. It's also too slippy with its all plastic design.
So I decided I needed a smaller phone with no hardware buttons and the Moto X seemed like the perfect fit. After two days using it I have to say it's a lovely device. Build quality is top notch and the size is just perfect for one handed use. And because it's pretty much stock Android and not Touchwiz I'm not in the mood to flash a ROM at all. I'm more than happy with the software at the moment. I can always flash a ROM at a later date.
So yes go for it!

I would buy it, its the most powerfull and feature packed phone in this price and screen size range.
For me, the only alternative is the Samsung Galaxy Alpha.
The only thing you have to make shure is, if 16 GB storage is enough for your needs.

Let me tell you the story of Moto X 2nd Gen here in India. It's available for INR 30000 which is about 460 USD. And if you get your screen broken (which magically is turning into a very frequent phenomenon) your costs from the Moto Service Centre comes around INR 20000 which is 311 USD approx. So yeah , no one's gonna buy it in their right mind. Specs and improvements don't mean anything if the post sale services are that much of a pain.
Holding the whole Galaxy in my hand.

The only alternative I have found is sony z3c but I will only get that if something happens to this. Since its more expensive and it has a glass back which could break. But a bit disappointed on design as not very flexible, eg: no SD card slot and too little memory not sure why its this way but anyhow Motorola phones are no longer developed by Motorola engineers but LeNovo engineers... So I don't know is that means as much to you as much as it means for me.
I had a lot of fun with my Razor previously but as it seems, there is no Cyanogen alternative for us on Moto X vitara...
I can sell you mine if you want its in perfect condition for 100€ .

i agree with you phones are just to big now, very cumbersome, the moto x 1st gen fits my hand perfect with a outterbox commuter series case, so far its my all time favorite

I read bunch of articles stating that although Lenovo owns Motorola, it doesn't interfere with the design and engineering aspects of manufacturing the Moto devices. Theyre probably just concerned with their bottom line. I purchased my Moto X just a month ago for about 120$ new 16gigs, I was hesitant at first considering the old specs compared to what is out there but I couldn't resist the design, size and the 2years of developments to still make it run superbly.

Amazing phone man and I have owned them all. So impressed by the speed and how fluent it is, but if I was buying one again, I would make sure it's on kit kat, so I could flash a lollipop version that didn't have the bootloader updated because lots of people with issues on lollipop.

I have no idea why you should pay twice more for Chinese quality). Buy US models, which working well in EU for $100 and be happy like me Nothing compares to the phone yet

You and I think alike.. Me too think only solid phone in this form factor is z3c.. But the camera review is not that great.. They just bumped the specs.. I'm having a hard time finding a great phone under 5inch size.. Any ideas? Really disappointed with OPO2! ARE THEY NOT THINKING ABOUT PEOPLE WHO HAVE SMALL HANDS AND PREFER SMALLER DEVICES? Such a shame

I'll be waiting for the new Moto X Pure Edition.
I have been told by Motorola support that it WILL be bootloader unlocked for Verizon.

Seems like there is no other good option Although I was playing with a samsung galaxy s6 the other day, both edge and regular.. they're actually not that bad! solid build quality and not thaat much bigger than our moto x. Just a little bigger but still not as wide as 2014 moto x or other phones. I might consider it but its soo expensive..

I have a Note 4 and would have got the Note 5 if had an sd slot, but it apparently does not. The front facing speakers, sd slot and 64GB internal storage for $500 to $550 for a Moto X Pure seems too good to pass up
The only concern but a biggy is battery life. I will buy from Best Buy and then return it if battery life is an issue. Heck, even if the Note 5 had an sd slot I would consider the Moto X Pure due to price and features

I'm getting the style also but with an SD slot, 16gb is all I need. I only use around 4gb for apps now. If battery is your thing, get the moto x with a 3600 mah battery, and 5.5 1080p. They should of made the 3600 mah standard for both.

Same question. Getting the 16 gigs model for ~$312 & 32 gigs model for ~$342 in India. Do the current owners recommend this phone now? One concern i have is the battery life, saw some tips and tricks that help, but are they really effective? (like the dpi adjustment), and how much SOT does the average user get?
Another question i have is that should i go for the 16 GB or 32 GB model? (given that Marshmallow update allows SD card to be used as internal memory, I have a 32 GB SanDisk Class 10 48 MB/s mmc).
If someone could answer these questions soon then it'll be really helpful as this offer will last only for a couple of days.

Yeah. Also seeing all the reviews here in India, most people complaining about receiving bad units and then sending them for replacement 2-3 times. It seems as if it is luck to receive a unit that is almost without any issue. It's like playing lottery and also the Motorola Service Center here has bad reputation. It will suck to keep sending it for replacements in hopes of getting a good unit. At this price point don't have any better option either.
Hope you guys suggest something. Thanks in advance.

Yup, this faulty unit issue really scares me, also the delicate screen issue.
Having owned Samsung devices since 2012, i can safely say one thing, their devices are robust & service reliable. People might crib about the software and price but i feel i can rely on the phones.
Right now i can't shell out more than $350 and at that price point, only viable options for me are the X Style & Honor 7.

Never had any issues with my Moto X Style. Battery life is more than acceptable, and in any case, it's fully charged within an hour so its not a problem. Only downside is that development here on XDA for the device is poor when compared to the likes of a Nexus device, however, having said that, when I first got the device I immediately flashed a number of custom roms but since 6.01 stock is now available, I've gone back to that. It would be nice to have a few up to date and fully working custom kernels for the device without having to resort to downgrading modems etc... but I can live with the stock kernel.

I'n not a heavy user. Probably make two or three phone calls daily and send half a dozen texts. I mainly use it for recording mountain biking via Strava and catching up with news via Facebook/G+/Twitter etc.... I would say that all in all my use would be around 2hrs daily tops and the battery lasts me a couple of days. As I say though, it charges that quick, battery life isn't a big issue - if I plug it in at the start of my journey to work, it's fully charged by the time I get there.

Used it during a road trip recently with navigation SW, a couple offline maps, messaging and camera/gallery all running simultaneously. Buttery smooth, no heating issues. Poor old Nexus 4 couldn't have handled that...

Very nice, I paid that much for the 16GB from Amazon. So OP, $312 isn't a great price at least in the US and expect prices to drop more once the new version is announced/released.

Hi.. I just came to know abt this new feature in marshmallow by your post.. and then searched it over the internet and got to read that if we set our sd card as adopted storage, we can't access it even after connecting to the laptop?
Is it so?
Because, generally we are able to access the content of our phone memory through connecting the phone via usb cable..

Hey, what i know is that if the SD card is selected as adopted storage, it is encrypted and mounted as part of the system. We can't just pop it out and use it as a normal storage, one of my friends updated his phone to MM and when he removed his SD card after it was encrypted to use it normally, the storage got corrupted. I think that we can access the storage normally through the phone or connecting it via data cable to your PC/lappy, but I'm not really sure about it since none of my phones have MM.
Hopefully one of the members can tell us about it.

My usage is just browsing and some social media apps. I won't be gaming on phone. So for those purposes I am wondering which one to buy out of Moto G4 Plus(3GB RAM Variant) and Moto X Style.
What I am really wondering is if spending extra $90 for Moto X Style worth it?
Saw a lot of people complaining about heating issue on Moto G4 Plus.
Also, the prices are gonna drop more when they actually announce this year's X or Z series, whatever they are calling it.
I need to make a decision in a week if I am gonna buy it right now.
I tried using sd card as internal storage on MM and I didn't like it because whenever I plugged my phone to the computer, computer won't show the adopted sd card as internal storage. It only shows the real internel storage that is 16GB I have on my phone right now and not the 32GB Class 10 Card. I am okay with using it as external storage though.

I don't need to buy a phone immediately, but considering the offers and the 10% discount for Citibank card holders, I'm tempted.
I want to exchange my Note 3 Neo (getting old) and all in all I'm getting a pretty good deal (~14.5K). If only they had an exchange program in Amazon, the list of options would've grown considerably.
Even my usage doesn't include gaming, but i do a lot of other things regurlarly, my problem is that lags & jitters bother me so I'm not inclined towards buying SD 615/616 phones (plus they are heaters, i own a Mi4i). Considering that the X Style is a good bet for me, only problem is the battery life, i get 5+ hrs SOT on both my phones (the Neo used to give 7+ hrs during the 1st year).
I'm really in a fix cos i have money to either buy a new phone or get my Mac upgraded (SSD & RAM for 2012 model).

I am not really happy with the battery life. I usually use it from 8:30 am to 22:30 pm, wifi/data on all the time, connected to a smart watch. At the end of the day there is usually 30% to 15% battery left with between 2h30 to 3h00 SOT, brightness quite high. If I use it a lot during the first half of the day I know I will need to recharge if I go out in the evening (but anyway in this case I swap phones).
But all the rest I am very happy with: I love the screen, amazing speakers and I am really enjoying the lag free android stock experience. It does not get hot if I don't play. Pictures and videos are awesome when it is sunny, but it is difficult to have non-blurry pictures in low light. Selfies are great as well.
One thing that pisses me off though: there is no way to use a tempered glass protection because the phone's glass starts to curve before the edge of the screen. So I am stuck with a plastic screen protection that has a hallow anyway. 2.5D screens are already stupid on their own but it is criminal to do it this way.

If you are wanting new it might be a good idea not to wait to long. In terms of specs, you will definitely see a noticeable difference. Only you can determine if this is right for you.

Some questions before I order?

I am very excited to order a new Moto G4 Plus, it will be a replacement for my One Plus X which was stolen about 6 weeks ago.
Amazon UK have the following listing:
Motorola Moto G4 Plus 16GB Dual SIM-Free Smartphone - White - Exclusive to Amazon for £199 (€221/$248)
The Dual SIM would be useful for my work number, but not at the price of a white phone!
Am I correct the Moto G4 Plus cannot be bought for that price dual SIM in black?
If so would it be possible and cost effective to order that white dual SIM model and a black front and back bezel?
Otherwise I was thinking of ordering this model:
Motorola Moto G4 Plus 16GB SIM-Free Smartphone - Black (Single SIM) - (Exclusive to Amazon) for £199
Unless there are issues with heat or performance with that model and I should consider a 3GB RAM model instead? I have a 128GB Sandisk MicroSD card so I thought I could get by with 16GB of on board memory...

Thanks, I think I would pay the £30 for the bump from 16GB to 32GB, in black, and dual SIM. I do not see anywhere on that page it is dual SIM, are you absolutely certain it is?

This may not be relevant considering the reasons you're upgrading from OPX, but given my few days experience with OPX you'd miss its fantastic OLED display on MOTO G. At the cost of sounding discouraging, being a current Moto G4 plus user I'd recommend considering another phone for your intended purpose of upgrading. This is based on my two month rigorous use and finding far too many issues with Moto G4 plus for its hype. For one, unless you aren't fond of dedicating a few hours each day flashing ROMs and tweaking settings or installing mods, heating-up and ghost touch issues, apart from Moto G's build and design are not easy to accept for the price you pay for this fourth moto G iteration which is far from its predecessors' in terms of quality and performance.
As for the memory, going from 16 to 32 gig is surely worthwhile though only if there weren't other 32Gig phones out there offering better performance at prolly more competent prices.
Sorry if I sound sore, but couldn't help being honest with what I've learned from buying this phone.

Oh, I had thought the heat issues were resolved!
I actually ordered a few days go, Motorola's website told me so, but then sent me an email saying it was cancelled. I queried this with support and they told me it was because my bank declined the transfer, but I spoke with my bank and they said Motorola never tried to take the money!
I just ordered again about an hour ago...
What phone would you recommend instead? I was pretty set on the Moto G4 Plus

Why don't get a Note 7 instead.

I don't have a G4 Plus but I do have a G4 XT1625. It blows my previous Moto G2 out of the water in performance, battery life and reliability. No major issues at all on stock or with the custom ROM I now use. I have been using it for about two months and couldn't be happier with it.

Okay, so it seems most would recommend their Moto G4 Plus.
Another 'Moto-maker' order cancelled by Motorola UK. After speaking with 3 technical support agents through their web based Live Chat, and being unable to get a clear answer from either one of them, I phoned and spoke with someone whose first language was actually English, and they explained the orders were cancelled because I was using a redirection service.
As I am in the Republic of Ireland I cannot order directly from Motorola UK, instead I tried using the same forwarder I always use for this kind of thing, but it is blacklsited by Motorola UK. Not sure what to do now, I really want a black dual SIM 32GB G4 Plus, but I do not want to pay Amazon an extra £39 for the privilege! It would be a real shame if I had to instead opt for the black single sim 16GB model from Amazon.
I am not sure what to do now, perhaps see if any family have friends in the UK that would manually forward it.

Sorry about that, I wasn't aware you'd already ordered for one, could have toned down the bad stuff I've had to say.
I guess, having shopped around a bit, doesn't look like there's much to choose from if I were to get a different phone, besides to be more honest my budget won't allow an upgrade just as yet. So guess I'll live with it for now and while my time away installing and uninstalling programs to squeeze out whatever good I can from my Moto G4 Plus.
And yes, majority moto g4 owners do seem to be swearing by their phones, that should ideally suffice to join their lot, besides making it worth buying considering there's going to be no dearth of dedicated forums and communities and such.

FWIW, there are things I'd like to see like NFC, a magnetic compass and water repellent like the G3 but all in all it's a pretty solid phone for the price. Oh yea, it doesn't have the built-in heater like some Samsung phones but I can live without that.
