How to flash Android L .tar.gz on rooted Nexus 4? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I have a rooted Nexus 4 running CM11 M7.
I've downloaded the official Google Code Android L .tar.gz file for the Nexus 4. How do I go about flashing/installing it? I already have ClockworkMod 6.0. I don't mind having to factory reset if it's necessary. My bootloader is, I understand, unlocked.
Thanks for any help!

Can you please share the for you downloaded?

You have to flash it but not through recovery. Download universal android toolkit

how smart could you be to create an account just for this stupid prank?

OP, give us either screenshots, upload what you have, or give us a system dump. Otherwise I'm calling BS on another desperate Nexus 4 user who can't be bothered to wait just to play around with something that holds more bugs than a forest.

I think OP is telling the truth i accessed the aosp project for mako and found this android. googlesource. com/device/lge/mako/+/l-preview (take out the spaces)
if you see there is a link like this on the top [tgz] that downloads a tar.gz file.

this is a 602kb file containing the (incomplete) kernel source. useless.

Does this mean I have to wait until the factory image is published?

yes. youll be waiting to about october or so until google actually releases "L".

My $0.02
Not sure how he got the tar.gz, but it wouldn't have been hard to compress the files from Android Studio
It's a "preview" for developers to begin developing for Android L. "Allegedly" there are people attempting to port to the Nexus 4. I can't even port Nexus 5 over

Did you copy the zip from /cache - and check it out?
A patch file (eg: market.p)? Or the full apk? Does it touch anything else? What build is listed in Settings > About ?
Just unrooted - reverted to pure stock - updated to 55D - rerooted - rebuilt my framework - yadda yadda - on Sunday. Hope I don't need to go through all that again..
how do copy it and view the files? it's downloaded, i just haven't installed it
i haven't rooted yet so i don't have all the options of root file explorer at the momment.
Just got this as well, not sure what it changed.

Install a File Manager if you dont already have one and check /cache.
Since you aren't rooted you may not be able to see it. Check anyway. If you can, use the file manager to copy it to your sdcard and please upload it for us.

That's what we'd like to know. If you're rooted, copy the .zip file from /cache to a handy location or your PC and explore inside the zip.
The update is first downloaded to /cache. A long name with HTK75D somewhere and ending in .zip.
Is there a /patch folder in the zip? All the files in that branch are patched by the updater. The files must be the latest stock version to get patched.
Is there a /system and/or /recovery folder in the zip? All the files in those branches get copied - and older ones on the Xoom are overwritten.
Drill down the /META-INF branch all the way. You'll find "updater-script". This is the command file which guides the whole update process - and tells us everything it is doing.
If there is a bootloader.bin file in the zip's root - we'll be flashed a new bootloader - which could break custom kernels and usually generates some apprehension (guilty until proven innocent).

I've never checked, but for those who aren't rooted, the filename might be logged. Could anyone who recently downloaded the update (but hasn't installed/rebooted yet) check LogCat to see if the filename is there? It should look something like this:
############.signed-tervigon-HTK75D-from-HTK55D.########
(pound signs represent hexadecimal digits)
If it's there, then this might help others manually download the update from the OTA site:
http://android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/motorola_tervigon/<update package filename>
(I think )
Thanks!
i got the update to my rooted 3g xoom w/ custom rom. i looked at the zip and it does indeed have boot stuffz. so im not going to install it. if anyone wants a copy my email is my username @ gmail. i dont have an upload site to send it to, email if you're interested.

S'all right. 55s a benign update - we're still not sure what it fixed (or broke). If you are still stock - though rooted - use Stachre's update method in the dev section. Then you'll be ready for 75.
yeah 55 was the update from a week ago, google is dropping another one on us.

ROM problems thread

Hi everyone, I'm making this so that any problems with ROMS can be discussed here, and any associated fixes. This way we don't clutter the actual ROM threads and all the problems/fixes are in one place. :good:
I'll start it off.
I just ported over a 4.1.2 ROM but the soft keyboard FC's literally every 5 seconds. Any ideas? I tried pulling a logcat from the computer and it says "Unable to open log device '/dev/log/main': No such file or directory
Attached is a screenshot.
I'm gonna try to install a different keyboard from the playstore and see if that one works.

I had that same problem on one of my first ICS ports, just sub it out for any of the working ones on the Shift. Don't forget to switch out the lib too.
I would say the same thing as ryan, as far as the keyboard is concerned.
And as far as the logcat problem, the only time i have ever had that error was when it was a bad flash. Googling the error gives you a bunch of different reasons this error could happen. I doubt it is a kernel problem, as some sites suggests, because I'm guessing you are using one of the kernels we already have and none of the other roms have the same problem. So I would look into one of the other suggestions that pop up when googling.
Yeah, I'll look into it when I get home today. And i know it cant be a bad flash because i wiped 10 times before flashing it.
Sent from my PG06100
Well i think I found the error. I found a post on stackoverflow that led me to the etc/init.d folder...and in one of the files there I found this
Code:
rm /dev/log/main
Now why that was in there, i have no idea. Hopefully that fixes that part and then I'll just swap out the soft keyboard and Latin_ime.so to fix the AOSP keyboard and all should be good....so if all goes well, expect a new port in the dev section :good:

Really easy, replace the apk with one that you know works... For this example we'll use the 4.2 keyboard from my ROM. Delete both the apk and the libjniLatin_IME.so from system/lib. Replace with the working apk and the corresponding lib (libjniLatin_IMEgoogle.so or something close to that) and rezip. If that doesn't work see if you can get a flashable like the Xperia T keyboard to work after boot. If that doesn't work, there is probably a major problem.

Did the logcat tell you anything about the error? Most times it will mention the lib missing. Even if you see it there it may be the wrong version, and you would need to grab it from the port.

Jellybelly Omega stuck
I flashed Jellybelly Omega to the Shift following the instructions to the letter (multiple times now) and it just gets stuck at the HTC screen. I have left it there for an hour or so, because I know that first boot can take a while. But it just sits there on the HTC screen.

Are you s-on unlocked?
If you are you need to
1. Open the ROM with 7zip or winrar and move the boot.img to where fastboot is located and then run this command from fastboot
fastboot flash boot boot.img
If your not check the md5 sum with the one provided on dev-host. And redownload/transfer if needed

The signature reflects the specific models I purchased and the amount of ram/rom they had. As such it appears accurate to me.

The short answer, and it's not intended to be ugly, is that if you have to ask it's not a file you should be installing.
It's easier to get it from the system updater....this is primarily intended for folks doing rom work or want to extract the patches to see what might be applied to the other models. It could be sideloaded via twrp for the specific firmware/model listed if they needed to for a particular reason.

It died on verifying system because I don't have that Google bloat installed. Oh well.
Quick question. I've flashed .bin files via odin, what do I do here?
It's simply a renamed zip. Change .bin to .zip and you can open it.
@purple.epod and others....I'm uploading an unrooted system image with boot (we need the kernel to match the system) to mega and will post the url when it completes tomorrow sometime. That file can be used to flash via twrp to the latest version and skip all the interim steps. Keep an eye out for it.
Sorry for so many questions -_- Lol. But flash this? Or the one you're talking about uploading?
