SetCPU is supposed to work with Custom Kernels which have options for Overclocking/Undervolting/CPU Governors. The stock kernel does not support these features as the OEM builds the kernel in a way it thinks will be perfect for the device and no modifications can be made to it.
You should wait for a custom kernel to use SetCPU.
Cheers!

Sadly..no custom kernel for my device now.. . are you a dev?

New to overclocking

I have tinkered with of pcs so understand a little bit but have never done a phone. I would like to oc to s decent speed but at the same time not massively impact on battery performance or temprature.Would anyone be willing to walk me through it. Don't want to harm my baby

MOD Edit: Moved to General
Install one of the OC-kernels in this forum and download/install SetCPU. a free version of SetCPU is available here on XDA, use search.
Once you install the OC kernel, start SetCPU, click auto-detect and off you go!
Set default max and min frequentie and make profile (like Screen off->max 386mhz, min 245mhz).

see even thats not basic enough for me
i have set cpu on my phone now and i was going to download this kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835616 (will this be stable and kind to battery consumption and temp)
so once downloaded where do i put it and what do i need to change to get it working
Why don't you read through the overclocking module from G2 thread in de DHD dev section?
I have my DHD for 3 weeks and this is my first android phone. I got it to work following that thread.
really simple

I would not mess with the settings if I were you.
I have mine on conservative at all times. If you have ever burned up the cpu or underclocked it too far then you know what I mean.
Set cpu? Lol. Why pay for what your droid can do on its own?
Hmm the words foot in mouth come to mind lol see comment below. £:0 ← €≥√
Still I like cpu Tuner.. its a nice app if you don't have one ur attached to.

A)Set to Smartass governor.
B)Clock MAX speed to anything you want to (make sure its below 1870MHZ or you will have crashes
C)Set/leave MIN at 245MHZ
Make sure you get a custom kernel ( Lee's Is good with his ROM - LEEDROID)
Also have a look at the links CitizenLee posted -Especially the last one about the governors.
Good Luck!
P.S. Avid Droidery : SetCPU Is available FREE to all XDA members
why dont i have option of smartass ect?? also i cant set it as high as anyone else

As someone mentioned above, you need a custom kernel.

You need to flash a custom kernel - have an exploration around the Desire HD Android Development Board.
As I mentioned earlier - have a look at Leedroid's Kernel in conjunction with his ROM - Fantastic.
Cheers guys missed that mite flash his new gb rom tom

See all those links I posted? It wasn't just for ****s and giggles... read them and you'll see this question has been answered over and over

Look, I don't want to discourage you but...months ago I had a problem with a volume rocker. It wasn't functioning. I sent my X8 for repair and they replaced it's motherboard. I think the cause might have been the overclocked CPU so now I'm not using OC anymore.
Be careful.

Which frequency were you using? I OCed my phone to 691MHz and it works fine.
Probably 710MHz. I was a noob back then

Maybe the connection between the motherboard and volume rocker is not functioning.
BTW,If you don't want to kills your phone, just don't overclock.
No dude .. i don't wanna kill it For sure ..
i use overclock with froyobread rom at 748 Mhz, and it's very smooth. sometimes my phone overheats just a little bit, but if you worry about it you can try a lower frequency. you can install the module with rootexplorer, or maybe file expert, but just if your phone is rooted. i think you should try it out
mine is running @748MhzMax, 480Minimum : Very fast and stable!
Can you tell me how to overclock it? I downloaded SetCPU, but max was 600MHz. I read that i need custom kernel or what?

[Q]Overclocking and Undervolting

Hi!
I've recently overclocked my phone to 1.284GHz. Now what? I don't see any significant changes. Srsly. ._.
And can anyone teach me how to undervolt? I think its useful.
Ciao!
if your phone have minimum apps to load u cant see the speed,,
if you have more apps to load then u will see the speed.(it does not hang or lag)

Overclocking your phone wilm improve performance when your phone really needs it your governor may keep your phone at some low frequecy unless speed is needed.. You can change governers and frequencies using no frill cpu control
undervolting is pre enabled in some roms and kernels and requires a script in init.d
go to system/etc/init.d using root explorer an see if there is a file named 00undervolt or bacem tweak.. Just edit it and change to you desired value (-100mv works fine.. I got random reboots at -120mv)
I'm experiencing reboots since I've overclocked.
Lol. That s the problem of merruks kernel.

How do I overclock my rooted SGH-I337m(virgin)?

I am looking to try and run an N64 emulator smoother. I've been searching Google high and low for a custom kernel that wall allow my to overclock my phone, but I am left stumped so I come here. Might I also add that I am running android 4.4.2.
O/C requires a custom kernel.. Find one you like and flash it via TWRP or CMR..
use an app like mulitcore cpu control or rom toolbox to then change clock frequencies. The s4 already has overheating problems.. overclocking is not going to help and will eat your battery. Increacing clock freqs wont help much.
