[Q] Weird Note 3 Bootup/Lock Screen Issue - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Galaxy Note 3 running stock firmware on TMobile. It is not rooted or anything special.
I'm running into an issue where whenever it boots up, it comes up quickly, but Bluetooth and Wifi are not enabled (even though they were before when it shut down). Also, the screen lock button doesn't do anything, so there's no way to lock the screen. If I hold down the screen button, it does bring up the Power menu, so I know the physical button is fine.
If I just sit and wait, Bluetooth and Wifi do eventually come on, but it could take hours. Alternately, if I just hit the home button and lock button a lot in no particular order, eventually the lock button will randomly work, and the screen will lock. When I unlock the screen, I can see Wifi and Bluetooth coming on. Somehow the lack of a functional lock screen button and the wifi and bluetooth not turning on are tied to eachother, but I don't really understand why.
Tonight my phone was being a little laggy, so I restarted it, and I wasn't thinking about this bug so I just put it in my pocket while it rebooted. It started up, but since I wasn't paying attention to it I didn't get the lock screen working and the wifi and bluetooth on. When I finally pulled my phone out about an hour later the battery was at 8%. I looked at battery stats, and the battery use is attributed to
Android OS 28%
Media Server 27%
Android System 12%
Screen 8%
Those stats make me think something is getting all hung up when it boots up and causing the OS to just spin and burn battery.
Any ideas? I don't even know where to start. I've googled a lot but it's hard trying to figure out what the right phrase is, since most of my googling results in people who don't like their lock screen or can't get their wifi to connect.
Thanks in advance
J

Issues with JFv1.41

I'm having a couple off issues with the latest release.
First of all I can't turn Wifi off and keep it off. Everytime I go into the menu to check on it, it's checked, so I uncheck it, and it'll turn off for a minute or two and then all of a sudden turns right back on. This is extremely annoying.
And the other is that it seems like in some apps my touchscreen presses don't keep the phone awake. So I can be interacting with the screen and then all of a sudden it'll go dim. I'll keep pressing on screen buttons and a few seconds later the display will shut off completely. The only way I can jog it back awake in its dimmed state is to move the trackball or press some other hardware button.
Anyone else seen these problems?

I've seen similar issue with the screen staying awake, thought it's just the phone. Also not sure if it's related sometimes I'll click on a button for example, but it will almost not recognize the spot i'm clicking on and click something else on the screen.
These are the same problems I've been seeing on my phone. I imagine it is due to the multitouch hack, but I haven't gotten the motivation to downgrade my phone back to 1.31.
Do you have anything installed like power manager or locale? One of those progams may be turning on wifi.

Nope, I had installed Power Manager once a while back and didn't like how it worked so I uninstalled it. Don't have Locale installed either. I ran the task manager to see what was running and there was nothing that I could tell that would turn the wifi on.
The touch issues are rather widespread amongst 1.41 users. However, don't know what's up with ur wifi. I have a strange issue with my wifi as well though. Whenever I boot up my phone and wifi was enabled when it turned it off. I get 2 not responding errors. Everytime. Its like clockwork. With 3g? Never. It took me about 20 wipes and 10 or so hours to finally figure it out. Hopefully all these problems will be fixed with rc33
I have also noticed that Applications don't check for new updates anymore. even when I go to "My Downloads", It used to show "free" next to any application that has an update or has been uninstalled. Now it shows "Installed" next to all the applications but when I go to the application by category, It shows up as "Free" meaning that there is a new version.
the case in simple points:
1. when I open the Application..... It doesn't detect the update.
2. when I go to "My Downloads" in the market, It doesn't show "Free" next to any application that has an update.
But if I go to the application by category, It shows "Free".

i havnt had a problem with it staying on, i noticed that my phone was dimming to quickly. I know theres probably an adjustment somwhere (i think at least) but i havnt had any problems what so ever with it.
Very strange. I haven't had either problem (wifi or touchscreen). I have noticed that my battery drains more quickly than it used to, but I have been blaming this on the DroidSans autorotate feature always flipping the screen everytime I move the phone (I mess with the phone an awful lot).
Droidsan
I can not get auto rotate on JF RC-33. Does anyone have this problem???
another issue with with this version was that all my ringtones were changed for my contacts and stuff
pretty wierd.
i don't have any problems mentioned ATM.

DroidSans Tweaks checks the version. At the moment it's not going to recognize RC33 as a valid version. Wait for it to be updated.

What he said... But don't forget to enable auto rotate in your browser though. You don't need droidsans for that.

very dim lock screen instead of completely turning off the screen

Well, my streak on 2.1 was doing this for a while but not anymore after a reboot: When the screen time out kicked in, the screen would not turn off, instead it would dim the screen but I could still see the Beautiful Home Clock. You still need to hit the power button to unlock the phone. Anyone know how I can enable this feature again?

I have the exact issue. I am running 2.1 on att dell streak.
At first I thought i fixed it, i turned the style lock feature off. it started to turn dark for a couple hours then reverted back to doing the dim on lock.
i sometimes have issues d/c calls because its dim and un-responsive.
I have dont alot of searching on this matter and dont know what to think.
I also have this problem... reading over at modaco, there's a bunch of other people with the same problem. They're saying if you turn off wifi before locking the phone, it doesn't occur. Mine only seems to have the problem every once in awhile though, so I haven't been able to test it myself yet. You might want to try it and see what happens.
Ah ok, i went back and searched and found the post you were talking about.
i would post the link but new users cant link, its under 2.1 bugs in modaco streak forums.
Too bad that turning wifi off for me isnt really an option because usually it wont let me turn it back on

Screen dims, but never shuts off

I just noticed this morning that when I hit the power button the screen only dims now. I swear it used to shut off the display completely before today, and I know for certain that is how it worked on 1.6. This really is annoying, because now when I put it in my pocket the 3 buttons are constantly being depresses and they vibrate, which lights the display again. That coupled with this stupid lock screen that I have to try to open 3-4 times is really making me angry. Maybe it's just me thugh.....
I'm assuming you upgraded to 2.1?
I remember reading somewhere that someone had a similar issue after upgrading to 2.1 but then they re flashed 2.1 a different way and problem went away.
Same issue here, it really eats up my battery life, and I do end up pushing those soft keys all-too often... I am on 2.1 and that is definitely when the problem started, I'm going to try reflashing to see if I can eliminate the issue.
try the steps found here on streaksmart.com. She reports that she has no issues when its done that way. I don't have my streak yet but will follow these steps when i get it.
I had a similar problem before, only the screen would go off and on again and stay on!
Turns out it was an APP that done this.
It is possible an app is causing the problem.

I've been experimenting with what's been causing this on mine, and I noticed that sometimes wifi will not shut all the way off. It hangs at "Turning off..."
So I tried not letting it sleep with wifi on, I turn it on if I need it, then turn it off (really a big pain in the butt) but went two days with no "no sleep" problems.
Today I tried leaving wifi on all the time, not two hours later it happened.
Since it's not happening to everybody, I wonder if it has something to do with our wifi setups. Maybe the router brand, or the encryption type, or something?
Last night I powered off the phone before better. I have wifi on all the time and I never shut it off. Today though, I have had no issues with the sleep function. It's still mid afternoon so we'll see if it continues this way. If so I will explore the wifi solution as well.
I was having this problem and somehow this setting was wrong:
SETTINGS>>APPLICATIONS>>DEVELOPMENT>>STAY AWAKE
mine was checked and we all know what that mean. Check yours to be sure if your not up for flashing again. Just a thought in case you overlooked this...

Yes, it means the screen will not time out and go off when it's being charged, but you can still turn it off, and mine wasn't plugged in when I couldn't turn it off.
I don't think this is related to what I've been seeing, but thanks.
It seems that Bluetooth did it today. I was fine all day going black on sleep with power button, but once I switched on wireless to connect to my car stereo it never went off again. Even if I turn off the wireless I have to shut down and reboot.

Same here. Started car and it showed zero signal strength for the phone on the dashboard display. Pressed the power button on the Dell Streak and the car display then displayed the signal strength. From then on, the screen would dim but not shut off.

Yes, and I couldn't turn it off once the "screen dim bug" took hold. Today I've rebooted and left Bluetooth OFF and Wireless ON and have not had an issue all day long, and that's making calls, using 3G, wireless and running a pile of apps. I think I can live with no Bluetooth until the next release.
Pete
I don't think it's BT. I think it's wifi not recovering properly from sleep mode.

Fair call. However, I've now had BT off for 6 hours and I'm using 3G, wireless and USB transfers and it hasn't hiccuped yet. This is the longest I've had with no screen dim bug.
I did notice that when I walked out to the car, the Streak could still "see" my home wireless network, then starting the car and the BT pairing and connecting is when the screen dim bug came back.
Maybe it's when both are run at the same time and both are connected/paired?

I agree its looks like its a wifi issue. I always keep my bluetooth off and it still did it.
I got mine fixed... but the problem is i did a bunch of steps and now cant figure out which one actually fixed it. its been running great for 12hrs now.
What I did, since I noticed that wifi sometimes didn't sleep or wake itself up properly all the time (which i think is what's affecting our Streak sleeping), was turn off the wifi sleep. In other words when my device shuts off wifi stays active.
However, I then used "Tasker" from the Market and setup two profiles. When the screen goes off it shuts off 3G, wifi and autosync. Then when the screen comes on it turns on 3g/wifi, waits 20 secs and enables autosync (which then initiates a mail/calendar/contacts sync).
This has worked perfectly, and I get mad good battery life to boot. Now this means I don't get mail/updates (facebook, weather, etc - still get calls and txts obviously) but for me it's not a big deal especially for the battery life.
I may eventually setup more Tasker events to duplicate "Juice Defender" and poll every half hour (3G only, when screen is off only) to get my updates, but for now it's been working great.
I also setup profiles so if I'm not where I have wifi pairings it shuts down wifi. Also if it detects I'm connected via wifi (at home for instance) it disables my lock screen. I also have it set to only start GPS for apps that need it (Maps, Navigation, Places, etc) and that helps save battery too.
Tasker is an awesome app for $3.99. It has a steep learning curve, but there are enough walk-throughs available to teach you how to do the basics.

Found the fix on Modaco. Have a look at the last page of the thread called "2.1 Bugs ....., Add what you find please....."
I never knew there was an "Advanced" menu for WiFi!
yeah that is not it. I also have mine set to never time out so does that mean it will never shut off either? Anyway, it keeps happening through the day. Wifi and bluetooth do seem to have something to do with it, but I need them both on all the time so the only thing I can do is reboot. Then it is good for a couple hours. Are the any apps that have a reboot? That's one thing I miss on the iPhone.

[Q] Screen won't turn off

For some reason my screen won't shut off when I press the power button or by itself after any amount of time. I made sure all of the settings were set right that might keep it on. I know it's not hardware damage because I've pretty much never dropped it or handled it hard. The power button still works because it will get the turn off, restart, etc screen to go. Any idea how to fix it? I already did a factory reset.

Download wakelock detector and see which app is keeping your screen on.
Dialed that number, the dimming worked, but the sleep button didn't do anything. I'll try that app out and see what it says.
In my understanding *#0*# dialing is for hardware check, if sleep is not working from there means it has nothing to do with any app & better to take to service centre.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Free mobile app
It didn't do it until after I tried to change my boot screen. Know if that would do anything? No boot animations go off besides the galaxy note 3 one (no Tmobile or samsung animation, and no shut off animation). I also rooted it so would they still help me even though the knox counter is 0x1?
Any help? Using the wakelock app it says that system manager application is used a lot more than anything else. Not sure what it does.

Try to flash complete stock ROM & clear Data & Catch before & after flashing from recovery may HELP.
That fixed it. I'm not sure why I didn't already try that since it seems kinda obvious. Don't know what made it do that though. Do you happen to know if modifying the boot animations can mess other things up?

Mine does this every time I reboot my phone. I have to press and hold the home key, pick the pie chart, pick RAM and pick "Clear Memory". Then it's fine til the next time I reboot.
I had my note 3 with the same problem and solved it recovering the original system/media/bootsamsung*.qmg files.
to solve the problem plug the charger and unplug it immediately and plug it back in again. This is also the reason why the problem is caused. So doing it again will solve the problem.

How to disable front buttons when device is locked?

I don't wish to entirely disable the front buttons, I only want them to stop responding when the phone is locked (I want them to function when the phone is unlocked). Don't misunderstand: I am not looking to simply disable the light. I want the buttons to be completely 'dead' when the phone is locked up. It's actually my bf's phone, and the buttons get accidentally pressed a lot when it's in his pocket. The phone will drain 60% in just 5 hours with no screen time, just locked and in his pocket (at work). I'm tweaking the phone to last longer, but I feel that having the buttons able to be pressed even while locked can't be good for the battery. :/ Someone correct me if I'm wrong with that (but even if I am, it's still annoying... what is the purpose of the buttons being 'live' while the screen is off???). The phone is a i9505, rooted on CM12.1 with Xposed, so modules could be suggested if any such fix exists. I have the home button disabled from waking the screen, but there doesn't seem to be an option anywhere about the back and menu buttons. I know the battery on my own phone, a Huawei, is much larger, but I only experience about 6% battery loss when the screen is off for 7-9 hours, so losing 60% seems excessive to me. I've checked battery stats on the Samsung, nothing seems abnormal. Is it even possible to fix what I'm asking? Thanks to anyone who helps!

I wouldn't have enabled a setting for this purposely, as it's quite annoying. I may also be wrong, but if I remember correctly, this was existent even on stock non-rooted. I have CM12.1 on it, Xposed modules are: Always Correct, APM+, BootManager, Secure Settings, Xposed Additions, YouTube AdAway, and YouTube Background Playback.
If there is a setting for this, let's say he or I accidentally enabled it, so would you know any suggestions of how to find such a setting, so it can be switched back? I appreciate you taking the time to answer.

When the screen is off then menu and back don't work. Do you have ambient display enabled by any chance? Disable it.
Did you try a different battery? Maybe his battery needs to be replaced.

Oh no, you're right about that. Back and menu doesn't actually do anything when touched while locked, but they do light up and respond in that sense (interestingly, they do also wake the screen while it's locked in TWRP, though perhaps that's irrelevant). Ambient display isn't enabled. We haven't tried a different battery, he just got the phone about a month ago. Then again, I also haven't the health of the battery. Maybe it came with a bad one.
When the screen is off, the back and menu buttons should not work. Not even the lights.

I understand you now. Yes when they the phone is locked and the screen is on, they will light up. That's normal and does not give any battery drain. Post some battery screenshots and post screens of the app betterbatterystats.

Ah got it. Good to know it's not impacting his battery, but that also leaves it open as to what IS (though, the buttons lighting up while it's locked still makes me scratch my head at what Samsung was thinking). Currently going to sleep at the moment, so I'll have to take a look at it tomorrow. I know Opera Max, a VPN data compression app, was chewing up battery (did this on my phone too, but eventually it settled down with the ROM), but I froze it for the moment so it won't run until I figure out what else is causing the problem. Battery life was poor even before the installation.
Other than that, battery stats have been normal, with the display taking the majority followed by Opera browser and the Android system, with some others. Nothing outrageous.
But since you mentioned about the battery, I did start noticing more things about the phone today. Perhaps it runs so hot because of it, and I also saw that when he unplugs it from the wall charger, it will immediately drop from 100% to 90-some% (varies). Might be the calibration, but with everything else, I ended up ordering an Anker replacement from Amazon to test.
The S4 heating is normal.
Also, it's not healthy for the battery to spend extended periods of time at 100%. That is why it drops faster from 100%.
