Unable to get into Recovery - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

LG G2 D802 Three (H3G) KK 4.4.2
Hi all, I've checked out this forum and also watched a few videos. I've tried the volume down + power until the LG logo appears and then release and re-press them but all that happens is that the phone powers off after the second press after about 10 seconds. The volumes buttons work fine. There's clearly a trick to this but after about 20 attempts, it has be beaten! Any clues to the magic sequence needed?
TIA
EDIT: Yes, I can get into download mode no problem.

when the lg logo appears try releasing power and volume down and then pressing volume up instead

Thanks for the reply.
If I just use volume up after the LG logo, the phone reboots normally. If I do a power + volume up after the LG logo, it just powers off after 10 seconds.
In fact every test shows the phone to behave exactly as if the volume up and down buttons have been disabled during boot up.

Tried a few times again - no recovery. Maybe it's something that has been blocked in the stock KK OTA update?

I think what he meant is when phone powered off, press volume down+power and when you see lg logo press volume up+down don't touch power

Update: I can get into recovery using adb. Maybe H3G have disabled getting into recovery via the hardware buttons only leaving download mode available. Bit of an odd thing to do though.

D'oh! That was about the only combo that I didn't try. Yes - it works. Many thanks to both for the help. Just curious: this alternative key combo I didn't find anywhere; is it something some carriers have done to their phone? (Or did I just not search hard enough? )

lg changed the combination when they started releasing the knock code update, I have no idea why but now it just means some people need to use volume down+power while others have to use volume up+down it just creates more trouble for us(people who help others) because if people don't mention whether they have knock code update or not we just have to guess what update they are on

Boot into TWRP

I can't for the life of me figure out how to boot into TWRP... I followed the how-to on the cyanogenmod wiki hoping that it would work, and I've tried googling this, but I can't figure it out. Cyanogenmod's wiki says hold the power and volume down simultaneously, then click them both when the LG screen shows, then click the power button three times. I've done this about ten times with no luck. I need to boot into twrp to install gapps as I've just flashed a rom on my G2.
Hold Power and Volume Down buttons and when LG screen shows, release them for half a second and press them again. It should show screen for factory reset. Go for it pressing Power button. It will take you to recovery...

I had the same problem and what I have to do is power the phone off, then hold the volume down button and power button at the same time, when the lg screen pops up release the volume down button while keeping the power button pressed. A splash screen will pop up and it will say entering recovery mode. It will then boot into recovery.

Power + Volume down or Volume up? I've always had to use volume up but I guess I can try volume down next time.
With the method I put it has to be volume down. I couldn't get the traditional methods to work for me.

It's cuz you're not doing it correctly.
Yes, you're supposed to depress "vol down & power" but once you see LG logo, let go of both buttons and then immediately hold down only the "power" button.
After a few secs, a white factory reset screen will appear. Ignore the warning and press power button. I know, its kinda scary at first, but then phone will load into recovery.
Does'nt function
I have an lg G2 f320k model, and I press two buttons (power and vol-), and depress both when I see lg logo and press only power button again, and after few seconds, lg restarts again (reset). Any convination with power button pressed do the same: reset! please, someone can help F320k owners?

Fully power off phone and try the following one should work:
1)with phone powered off hold volume down+power and when lg logo pops up let go and quickly press again
2)with phone powered off hold volume down+power and when lg logo pops up let go and hold volume down+up don't touch power
This will lead to factory reset menu press power button 2 or three times and phone will boot into custom recovery

Yes but no
YES! with 2), I can enter to factory reset menu, but NO, with power buton 2 or three times, g2 do normal boot, not recovery... but many thanks to you, now, f320k owners can enter to factory reset menu :good:

[Q] Can't enter recovery mode - stock rom

Heya.
I have my LG G2 for the past 4 months and decided its time to root it and install a decent rom.
I can't seem to enter recovery mode at all, I read up various guides online but they all say the same thing - power off, hold down the power and volume down key till the logo appears, release for 1 second and then hold them again till the recovery mode appears.
I have tried this for the past 1 hour and nada - phone just turns on normally.
Is this a known issue? perhaps there is some way to "unlock" that option? HELP!

They weren't wrong, it's just a new way of doing it that they've implemented, i believe. The funny thing is the old way still works for me lol

[Q] Stuck in boot loop and can't access recovery

My phone (LG G2 Verizon VS980) reboots at the LG logo (in a loop) after I successfully flashed cyanogenmod 11 and I can't seem to access TWRP with the instructions in their wiki: With the device powered down, hold Volume Down & Power. When the LG logo appears release the buttons and then press them again. Then, press the Power button three times!
Any ideas how I can get into TWRP? I can't connect on adb.

Do you have download mode? You might have to use the flashtool to get out of this.

Can't boot into recovery mode

I tried to update my LG G2 D802 from CM12.1 to 13 using the following steps:
1. reboot into twrp (2.8.7.3)
2. full wipe (all but internal storage)
3. installed bootstack-d802-CAF-signed.zip
4. installed CM13
5. reboot system
so far it worked fine, so I went back into recovery mode, installed the open_gapps-arm-6.0-stock-20151203.zip. After reboot, the phone keep throwing error messages "google service is closed" and keep repeating. I thought it may be an error in the gapps so I went into recovery again and tried to install another gapp version. I did a full-wipe again, but then I accidently did a system reboot. Now the phone is stuck after showing the LG logo and won't start properly. I try to go back into recovery mode:
1. turn off the phone
2. press power + volume down until the logo shows
3. release and repress the both button, which should bring me into recovery mode, but it didnt work. tried it numerous times, but always the same, if I release and press the both button after LG logo, the phone would just restart after few seconds...
can someone help me? Since the phone doesn't start, I can't install anything. Is there another way to get into recovery mode? Or can someone explain to me what I broke?
Don't press and release the volume down and power button at the lg logo. Just hold it until it goes into recovery.
If you can't get in, try to TOT back to stock. I would recommend you stick with rooted stock before you hard brick it(if you haven't done so already). Not only is cm buggy ass hell on the g2 but MM will be even more so since it's so new. Good luck.

what is "TOT"? How do I do that when I can't start the phone and can't get into recovery mode?
Follow this guide to go back to stock:

+1 to this method, i have been using this when I was not able to get into recovery easily. My issue is unrealted to yours though.
I had a similar issue trying to enter Recovery on my phone. I've tried a lot both methods, so I turned off the device, waited something like 5 minutes, then tried the vol up + vol down method and it worked. I don't know why, but that's not the first time I have to wait a bit longer to try the key combination in order to enter Recovery. Just in case you can't turn off you phone completly, hold power button till phone turns off, keep holding it, wait for the LG logo to show up, when the screen goes off, release the button. Good luck

It's not working for me. I got excited for a minute since others had luck with it, but it was a no-go for me. I know this is an older thread but....
It seems like being rooted, having TWRP and CM13 and Flashify, between all those, something should freakin' work, besides goofy hardware button combos. :crying:
