[Q] In-Call UI and Dialer (D802) - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello LG G2 section!
I recently bought this beauty and the only things I didn't like were these 2:
1) 2GB ram is typically 1GB since the the other half is reserverd I guess? -Does root changes this?
2) I don't like the Dialer and In-Call UI at all.
I tried some "apps" but those are for having a better number pad UI, so it doesn't change the incoming calls or general in-call UI.
I don't want to root (not yet) and as I know, my last stupid phone (HTC HDmini) was able to change that with a simple .exe file.
Is it possible to do that in android without root/flash?
Any kind of redirect links would be awesome!
My version is 4.4.2.
-Thank you!

1. No of 2 gb 1.8 is available for user the system uses around 1 gb
2. No you need to flash something or use app like full screen calling screen that lag and they doesn't replace the call in screen

If you haven't made any changes to your dialer as of yet, try ex dialer. It's quicker and easier on the eyes....plus you can change themes.

If I am not mistaken, exDialer is an app. That means you have to replace the current phone app with the exDialer.
Also it does not support incoming call changes (which is the ugliest part I think).

Correct....it is an app and you can use it as your default phone if you choose.

But still, my problem is the dialer (which can be changed quite easily with an app) but I want to change the incoming call/ in-call UI too...

I'm also quite unhappy with the looks of stock G2 dialer and the rest of the LG apps and I'm currently looking forward to jump to Cloudys G3 port....but it's too buggy still....so as a temporary workaround I've been replacing most stock apps with 3rd party apps and some G3 app ports i 've found here and there like the keyboard and notification panel...the only app that annoys me the most is the Dialer!! I haven't found a way of completely replacing it...and there hasn't been a G3 port for it yet either....as far as I'm aware of. Anyone has had any luck replacing it?

Exdialer for your dialing needs and this for the call screen.

Wow thank you revan17! This could actually work!

Both cloudy g3 1.0 and 1.1 are running perfectly fine. Give them a try. You may be surprised.

I already have I decided to take the leap yesterday with Cluody's G3 1.1, and after a full wipe and clean install I'm very impressed with the stability and performance..I haven't run into any bugs, FC or reboots for now..I'm even using Viper4android and Xposed with Gravity Box, G3 Tweaksbox Beta, with no problems, so I haven't lost any functionality either...I highly recommend anyone wanting to get rid of the ugly G2 stock UI to give it a try! But be sure to do a full wipe and follow Cloudy's recommendations regarding the bootloader and kernel.
btw. I have a D802

Thank you for the comments!
I don't look forward to root my G2 (since that "cloudy g3" is a ROM right?) and I also found that these dialer apps are very buggy and they don't replace the initial apps, they just overlap them (which I find bad).
Maybe I will wait for a 4.5 version, I don't know...

Yes, it's a rom. Is there any reason why you don't want to root? There's so much more potential you can squeeze out of your mobile by rooting it....and you can always unroot it and go back to stock if you're not happy or need to take it to warranty (as long as it's still functional of course).
I also had the same thoughts after starting to clutter my phone with mods and 3rd party apps to get a nicer UI and get rid of G2's stock one....I ended with apps overlapping and the UI looked fragmented..though nicer every app has a different style which isn't great for a seamless and fluid UI experience...plus the more apps and mods the more posibilities of running into bugs and errors.
That's why flashing Cloudy's G3 rom was the perfect solution for me [emoji106]

Well, the reasons I don't want to root right now are:
1) I rooted my previous phone alot of times and I have battery problems (HTC HD mini). I went back to the original ROM, and the service guy told me that I had flashed it and it shouldn't be on warranty.
2) I will probably wait for and 4.5 version. I don't want to do 10 roots in order to find the perfect one for me...
3) I don't have time right now to learn how to flash on Android (therefore this specific phone). I learned how to do it on Windows 6.5 so, I will look forward to it.
If there are any specific guides, I would be glad if you can link them to me

If they didn't accept it in warranty then you probably didn't set everything back to stock correctly There are plenty of guides explaining the process for the G2. And regarding the battery problems, on the contrary, you should probably get better battery life with a custom ROM as most of them get rid of LG's bloatware and useless apps which eat up battery and memory...and then you can even try different Kernels to further improve your battery life.
But for this you need time to read and get some basic knowledge on how an android system works, for example what Root is (from your post, I think you confuse rooting a phone with flashing a Rom), what's the Baseband, Modem, Bootloader, Custom Recovery, ADB, Kernel, Rom..etc Once you understand each of these terms and their function in the Android system it's very easy to get things done...and by using common sense it's actually quite difficult to completely **** up your mobile! But again...for that you need some time, and if you don't have that luxury, it will be more complicated..
Since we have the same model of the LG G2 (D802) I'll write you a quick step by step so you can have an overview of the process..and then read further yourself...but I won't take any responsibiliy if you run into trouble..

Thank you for the further information!
I will have some time after Monday so, I will try to look up all of those things you told me.
Don't get busy typing a guide for me, I am sure there are many guides out there and I can search for them
Thank you very much for the precious information!

ok, good luck! If you need any help just send me a PM.

Hey, for some reason I'm not able to respond to your PM, it's says you've either restricted the receipt of PM's or that you're not allowed to reveive them...so I'll answer you here.
-When you install a Rom, you "Flash" it (in PC terminology, it would be the equivalent of installing the Operating System, like Windows for example).
-The Kernel is a sort of "lower level" part of the operating system, which acts as and intermediary between the software and hardware. You can flash it (install it) independently from the ROM, but most of the Custom ROM's you'll find already have their own Kernel integrated, so you just have to flash the ROM. As an example, I'm using Cloudy G3 Rom which already came with it's own Kernel integrated, but I read in many posts that this other Kernel from Bruce2728 works very well (better battery life, faster, etc) with my LG G2 model D802 and Cloudy's G3 Rom, so after flashing Cloudy's G3 Rom I flashed Bruce2728's Kernel on top of it.
-Rooting is the process of gaining full privileges to the Android Operating System, so you can accces, modify and install anything you want (in PC terminology it would be the equivalent of upgrading from a restricted User account to an Administrator account)...normally, as long as you flash Custom Roms, you'll only have to root your device once. And as I mentioned you in my previous post, you can manually un-root your phone if you need to take it back for warranty for example, I never had to do it yet, but if it's ever necessary you can find guides explaining how to do it.

[Q] How to remove the phone bits from my tab?

As I have been flashing ROMs I've noticed many come with the Phone.apk. My Tab is a tablet, and not a phone so I want to remove it all. But when I tried to through adb it renders my data service useless. So would someone please tell me exactly how this is done?
Strange that you want to delete it
You could take a custom launcher and hide it from the drawer.

I don't see how.. I have a phone to make calls from. I have a tablet for web browsing.
I'm not wanting to hide it though. I want to remove it.
As far as I know the only way to fully remove the dialer functionality would be to cook your own rom without it. The only other thing I can think of is maybe taking the phone.apk from a standard tmo build and using that (I am fairly sure the default build still has a phone.apk as to my knowledge it is needed for radio services to function). Having said that I use mine as a phone so not gonna mess around to test it myself and my apologies if it doesn't/wont work. As a side note phone.apk is less then 4mb not sure why it would be a huge concern.

My contacts app has the dialer in it. And on some ROMs I get a voicemail notification. I suppose I could find a contacts apk without it. But if I'm going through all that I might as well get rid of the whole thing. I just don't see the reason behind needing to use a tablet as a phone, you know?

The "simple" solution would be to go back to your stock ROM, but that's likely not really an acceptable solution as the performance of the stock ROMs tends to be pretty poor in comparison to the later development builds.
So, you are likely to be left with removing or replacing certain components from your desired ROM with the stock TMo variants (as has been previously mentioned) on a trial and error basis to determine what works and what does not. It's doubtful that you'll find anyone who can tell you *exactly* what you want to do, because it seems that most US Tabs users are looking to re-enable the phone functionality that was artificially crippled by the US carriers.
I seldom use my Tabs phone functionality, but I have used it (makes a great speakerphone for conference calls!), and I would always rather have more functionality than less.

Dave

What would you want in a custom ROM?

So, now we have the possibility to have custom ROMs, flasheable with CWM. THere are already two guys who have put effort out there, and maybe they'd want some ideas on what you people would like. What do you consider that should be in your custom ROM of choice?
Myself, I would love a Reboot and Screenshot option in the power off menu.
Maybe a minimalist version of 2.3?
I want the touchpads to be able to contol the system/launcher, like the D-Pad cans.
Great question.
I already have reboot options in the power menu of my ROM. Taking a serious look at the Screenshot option. Not many ROMs appear to have it though, but I'm going to give it a shot.
Landscape mode for the launcher would be awesome. I know you can use a custom launcher, but I really like the one that comes with the phone

there was a guy who edited the HomeAPK and made it 3 screens landscape
you can edit the Home through comp. to make it more
The stock launcher, at least in the last build, does have landscape support

1) Auto Brigtness disable
2) Overclock
3) Use the touchpad as a touchscreen emulator (eg swiping on the touchpad is the same as swiping on the screen, great for browsing without touching the screen)
4) Enable the FM radio

+1 for this. The only thing I liked about the Verizon Play is that it's basically running stock gingerbread. Currently, I'm using my custom "hybrid" of r800i rom mixed with r800x launcher/apps. The upside is that I removed all the sony junk and replaced it with stock android apps (dialer, calendar, contacts, etc) while keeping stuff like working touchpad (which failed me in cyanogenmod) and playstation pocket. The downside is that I can't replace the sony lockscreen and statusbar with the stock one. For now, I'm just using widgetlock to emulate it.
If someone can get a working stock gingerbread rom with NOTHING extra (not even hidden SE apps and services), but still have working playstation pocket and touchpads/xperia optimized apps. I will use it.
AndroHero's ROM is certainly in that path.
But really... the stock GB Launcher too? It couldn't be more spartan if it tried...
I took a good run at adding a Screenshot menu item to the power menu but haven't been successful yet. Ends up crashing on boot, unfortunately, so I'm doing something wrong. Not giving up yet though. Decompiling JARs and trying to understand it all is a huge pain in the ass.
I've got reboot options already though along with the ability to overclock and undervolt.
I was looking towards pretty much going as stock Android as possible, but I wasn't sure anyone would want it.
need a 3g and wifi transfer rate in status bar, to make sure all the things running at the background and another app like fpse or psx4droid just for play ,bcz this is xperia play

I can't get reboot in power menu working. Well i can get it to work, but then the power off option reboots the device too
There's also the issue with Recovery just rebooting and not directly starting recovery yet. I'll take a look at what Power off is doing on mine as well.
Power Off seems to work fine for me. Are you maybe running it with the USB cable plugged in?

Missing Xposed on Android 5

What should replace G3 Tweaks/Xposed on Android 5?
On my rooted KK rom, I used several Xposed functions, out of which the most important to me:
- Four options/extended boot menu
- Volume keys skip tracks (RDIO, PANDORA) while screen is off
- More volume steps
Android 5 (ART) currently voids Xposed
Can you guys recommend ART alternatives for the above (APK or Mod)
Thanks

Xposed will not work on Android L
Probably it will not be patched.
Let me tell you a story, of a time before xposed (GHAST, yes, for there was such a time!). Back in these dark days, mods used to be done by pulling apart an apk, making modifications in the code and rebuilding the apk to insert into a rom, the problem was these files were device specific, and often rom specific so it made modding very time consuming, and you had to remake a mod for each device and often each particular rom.
Xposed changed this, it patched files on the fly in such a way that it worked on every device and every rom (so long as the file it was patching, and the code it was changing was present).
Now we have no Xposed, we have to go back to those olden times, lets put on our robes and pick up that longsword and fight back.
..... TLDR: There is nothing that Xposed does that cannot be done 'the old way', it is just a far more time consuming process doing it the old way, and because it is now device and often rom specific finding a developer to do it for your device and rom might not be easy.

Dude just wait xposed or something similar will eventually come for Android L too..
It's not just exposed. There are going to be a great many apps and tweaks that won't work on 5.0. Some will eventually be rewritten, some do things that might no longer be possible with Lollipop. All we can do is wait, and in the meantime decide whether the benefits of 5.0 outweigh the things we'll lose.
I'm going to hate the absence of Skip Lock, which the developer says can't be made to work on 5.0. That may keep me from upgrading for a while.

It does? Can it unlock the device when connected to specific WiFi networks? 5.0 offers trusted Bluetooth, but not trusted WiFi, like Skip Lock does, and it also doesn't allow apps to unlock the screen. But my main point was that even if these capabilities are eventually provided, it will take time. Right now "upgrading" to Lollipop will mean doing without a lot of the tweaks and hacks we've become used to.

Right. But out of the box, 5.0 doesn't allow any app to trigger a screen unlock. A lot of other things have been locked down, too. For the time being, upgrading to Lollipop is going to mean doing without a lot of the tweaks we're used to.

Google Dialer - On LG G3

Greetings XDA Members,
I've searched for quite some time, with limited success on keeping a stock rom along with Google Dialer. The best of both worlds if you will, that would allow great features without the loss of another. It was always a debate between using a AOSP rom at the loss of the camera, or sticking to stock and working with xposed to change settings to an agreeable state. With endless google searches, forums read, and opinions given by others; they all seemed to end with "Not Possible". Well, with some trial and error I have found a workable solution that will allow the Google Dialer to replace the stock dialer, and also allow for "In-callui" to replace the stock one.
It also needs to be mentioned, that I cannot guarantee this will work with your variant, custom rom, or other items not factored into the equation. Though this has worked for me without fail on the ATT Model D850 on Cloudy 2.5 but there are a few details to note. The "In-callUI" will show for both Incoming & Outgoing calls, but you will first see your stock one come up for a brief second or so and switch over. For me, this isn't an issue as I don't immediately answer or hang up when a call completes. Some of the items recommended in the prerequisite are optional and provide other ways to find/adjust permissions, or freeze/delete applications (Stock dialer). I'm not personally an avid developer, but if you have any questions I've been able to gain a great deal of knowledge over the years with hands on experience with the Android operating system. Feel free to ask any questions that may come up, and I'll be happy to assist if possible.
Pre-requisites;
LG G3 - Rooted
Custom Recovery with knowledge on Flashing ZIP files.
Root Explorer / File Manager
Nova Launcher / App to launch an activity.
Titanium Backup (recommended to backup Dialer and other applications in case of damage)
Included in the attachments is the file GoogleStockDialerAndMms. This file is a flashable zip that will automatically adjust the permissions necessary to make calls. It's highly recommended that you make a backup of your current rom with TWRP/CWM in case any issues arise. As this adds two files to your system directory, there is always a chance that an error can occur.
If you choose the route of Nova, you can create a shortcut to an activity. Below I've included a screenshot of which activity needs to be chosen in order to use Google Dialer.
Within Nova Launcher, long-press on the home screen.
Choose "Shortcuts"
Select "Activities"
Find "Google Dialer" in the list, then tap to open it up, and select "Phone" (use the first one in the list)
Can I disable my default dialer?
The short answer is no. As a general rule, you will need to keep your present dialer enabled in order to receive calls. The long answer is that on some phones you might be able to disable your stock dialer, but on others you definitely cannot. Feel free to try it on your own device and let us know what your results are. If you choose to do attempt this, I highly recommend against uninstalling and instead move to FREEZING the phone applications with Titanium Backup or similar root enabled application.

hi @Eruvion, just wanted to check if we get the search feature with your google dialer? or does this depend on the country you live in? thanks.

@resitm As far as I have heard and seen so far, it will work locally depending on the information generated from your local area by google. Please let me know if you attempt it and it doesn't work.

Good job on this even if Im already running an AOSP based ROM, I dont need this.
But you took time writing and explaining everything so thanked all your posts,
Have a nice day

i flashed the zip and everything seems to be working fine. i am also able to search close by businesses, i typed pizza and it showed me the closest pizza places.
the only FC i am getting is in settings when i tap call settings-voicemail, call waiting. i don't use that so its ok for me. thanks again.
also i did not have to create a shortcut, the app icon was there after restart.

@resitm I'm glad everything worked for you! Thanks for letting me know
@Paradoxxx Thank you for your kind words, I'm just glad I was able to give a small contribution to the wonderful community I've used for years!
Good job on your work! I also like Google dialer. Many thanks
This does work on VS985 5.0.1. The settings does crash if you click whatever the second option was (Went back to stock for my own reasons).

@SyCoREAPER thank you for the update!
Doesn't work here....either when triggered from a Nova Settings widget or from the icon in the launcher. Instant force close. I can try to grab a log if you think it'll help?
D852, running Dene_Bluesman's rom (basically stock LG 5.0.1)
Edit - wonder if its because the rom version i'm using is odexed? Going to try the deodexed version and report back....
Edit 2 - nope still crashes instantly. Super frustrating! Please let me know if a log will help! @Eruvion
I want to try this on my lg G2, is there any reason you think it might not work? Anything that would make this zip specific to the G3?
+1 on this. would like to see if we can get this to work on Cloudy for G2.
Hi
This thread seem's a bit dead. Anyway i have flashed this file and it works. I am on N&N 1.3 rom. It's a stock mm based rom.

CONFIRMED WORKING - Xposed mod on metro pcs 626s

I can confirm version 79 of xposed for ARM sdk22 as working. You'll find the downloads at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3034811
Perform a nandroid backup before beginning.
Download the xposed installer apk , install it, boot into recovery and flash the xposed v79 arm sdk22 .zip, clear cache and dalvik, then reboot phone and you are good to go! I know a lot of us have been waiting for this news so I figured I'd share.. Keep in mind, after you install the .zip and reboot the phone is going to take about 10 minutes to boot up but eventually it will, immediately afterwards the apps will be "optimizing" for about 15 minutes as it rewrites ART to include xposed. Now I am off to go install some modules! Later guys hahaha
Here is an Xposed Mod that will change carrier text in notification header, lock screen, and dial pad to anything you like. I changed mine to T-Mobile since MetroPCS is pretty much using their network. Edit (SystemUI) for header notification carrier text and lockscreen carrier text. For dial pad carrier text while connected to a call edit (Dialer). You will have to put in original name which will be MetroPCS and for custom text, enter whatever you like.

Big Thanks to: @liubaoyua
Anyone that has any useful stable modules, make sure to list them. Time to MOD
Snapprefs for Snapchat works too, so you can add it to that list ^^
Btw how do you get that "illest" and the leaf in the status bar? it looks cool cx
In the screen shot is the options for data signal in the pro version of Flat Style Bar Indicators xposed mod... Also I have Battery Home Icon in the screenshot. It turns your home button into circular battery meter. (look at my home button). This mod allowed me to free up status bar space and replace battery meter with day of week in the FSBI module. I highly recommend FSBI pro version and also pro version of Flat Style Colored bars. (This one adds colors to your status bar and nav bar for a more immersive look) .. I actually paid for those two when I had my old phone. Instead of explaining everything I have up and running so far, I'll post a screen shot of my modules screen.. One module that isn't on the screen shot is advanced power menu (apm). For booting into recovery, soft reboot etc... All of the mods shown I got directly from the xposed repo. I have my display setting to show experimental and beta mods as well as stable ones. But I've no issue with the mods that I've activated.. Not only on this phone, but I've used all these mods for numerous months on my old phone as well

I'm not sure if its going to be compatible with lollipop and or HTC sense, but I recommend to you a module called x blast (or maybe it's xblast) it has a whole slew of text editing options... I was using it with no issues on KitKat, but this module I notice hasn't been updated in awhile

Tried it and xblast has no effect on this device. Pretty much doesn't work. And it only changes header and lockscreen I believe. I believe custom text mod changes in any apk in app text and goes deep into the xml file. You can probably even change the hangouts text in the hangouts app into something like "Hanging" I haven't tried. But I'm sure you can, incredible mod. There also isn't too many mods for sense lollipop ?

That's pretty cool. Thanks for the knowledge. I might check it out
Now that we have xposed, the only thing I miss from my old phone is ROMs with support for RRO layers.. I guess I'm never content. It's always SOMEthing missing with me lol

I was interested because I seen some m9 roms like viper rom has it built in the system settings and it's based off sense. I tried doing it without any mod and it's headache dealing with Java and SDK. I'm looking to see if I can port cm12.1 or cm13 on this device but I know it's not easy. I'm just a novice user, but I wanna start developing.

I wish I could help. Developing is way outside my realm of knowledge. Would a CM build be your best chance of getting it done? I know its a personal preference, but I've preferred slim base and AOSP base over CM base as far as lollipop goes. (Slim had RRO when I was using it) . but to see ANY base Marshmallow build on this mid range phone we own would be killer!

I think they're all aosp based. Slim and cm is aosp based. I think it all depends on what kinda feature they bring. RRO layers is easier to code than cm themes I believe. I highly doubt I go into building a rom because I don't have any help and barley know anything about linux lol. I also don't have time to learn and do it. I wish I could lol. ?
I totally get it bro
working on t-mobile 626s too
I can confirm this is working on the Boost Mobile 626s variant as well.

Bump
EdeWow. This whole forum is pretty much dead. I wont be in this forum any more since i picked up an LG G3 which i love. I got a sweet deal on it because the usb port is broken. (I picked up an external charger) . If anybody needs to reach me which i doubt. Feel free to inbox. I recommend this G3 though. If you can get your hands on one, and dont mind switching to at&t or tmobile, do it. I rooted and installed recovery in less than ten minutes.. Incredibly easy. I never thought processor power mattered... Boy was i wrong. Nandroids took 1200-1500 seconds. On the G3 78 seconds... Thats insane. But anyways. Happy trails my Desire friends. Happy new year. I will come by and browse and try answer questions from time to time

Nice I like LG..I have an LGV410, and it gets cm13. I actually wanna get an LG phone. I want an unlocked optimus pro the notification light is sick on that phone. I got this phone because I couldn't pass on a $40 offer. So I picked it up, this phone hasn't let me down. Now it's time to max out your g3 software.
Yeah I had a similar situation... Cheap price and couldn't pass up.. I love how loud this thing is...Here is what I got on it right now. As soon as my simple mobile sim arrives I'll be making it my DD. Total bummer that metro won't let me use it.. 60 dollar unlimited plan really is the best deal around..
I want to make sure I am doing this correctly because flashing this zip via twrp takes up half of my internal storage memory (System & Other is using 4.36gb) despite the zip being about 3mb and seems to continue "eating it" even while I'm not touching anything.
I'm on stock rom w/ root and no nandroid backups or anything in my internal storage.
