[Q] Purple Dot on Photos - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was taking photos with my Samsung Galaxy S4 (I9550) and suddenly I came across a big problem:
Using the default camera, after I take a photo, a purple dot shows up in the left-down side of the taken photo. It's strange because it doesn't appear on the screen while I'm taking the photo, only after (when I see it again).
Can anyone help me please?
In this example (photo) the purple dot is on the "F" key.
Note:
I've noticed that it will only happens in 13MP (41283096) and 8MP (32642448) photos. If I take photos 10MP (4128*2322) or less they come out ok. So photos equal or smaller than 2322 (H) are ok.
Plus, If I take photos in 13MP and If I zoom the dot doesn't appear on the photo.

What is your rom version? Is your Rom stock rom?
Try wipe cache see it can solve the problem

are you sure you didn't add that in yourself? lol. it has a nice white edge around it, just like it's been cut and paste in windows
else, have you tried cleaning the lens on the phone? (or the f key on your keyboard).

I've cleaned it from the outside but still no results
I was using CM, but I've wiped it and changed into Omega ROM but the same thing is happening.

This may seam a joke to you but really bothers me because now I cannot use my phone camera as I wish.
I don't know why this happened but I'd like to resolve this.
Strange thing is that I only noticed this one day after I shoot the earpiece with a can of compressed air (to resolve the proximity sensor issue).
I resolved one problem and got another

sounds to me like you had some debris stuck inside the phone somewhere (causing the sensor issue?), which you've now dislodged and it's found it's way to the camera lens. genuinely, I doubt this is a software issue, as it's clearly not a stuck pixel (or group of pixels), look at the odd shape of it. looks to me definitely like a physical object. so again, try cleaning the lens......but if it's INSIDE then I don't see any way of fixing it without taking it to bits, where you're more likely to introduce more contaminants to the system, rather than cleaning what's already there.
if i were you i'd take it back if you're still under warranty, or take it to a phone repair shop that has a "clean room" where they can thoroughly clean the device without introducing more dust particles etc to the system.
::EDIT::
reading that you've changed ROM and still have the same issue.......definitely hardware rather than software related.

By the way, If I want to take into a Samsung (Warranty) I have to put the original ROM. It's that enough?

That will depend on what you've done with the device I think. If you have updated to kitkat you've probably tripped the knox flag if you've installed a custom rom or recovery. There's currently no known way to reset that. But I guess it can't hurt to try. Worst case you'll send it to them and they'll tell you your warranty is void and send it back without repairing it?
::edit::
There's a good guide on here for how to reset back to stock firmware etc. Be sure to use triangle away first to reset the flash counter back to 0.

I've read the guide. Can you point me to a Portuguese original rom please? I have version 4.4.2, so I think I have to find a rom 4.4.2 and not under it.
If you could help me, I would appreciate it

Although it's strange because it´s suppose to be German. But I bought it in Portugal.

which network are you using?, in order to find your carrier firmware, we need to know the csc code, e.g. for me in the uk on three.co.uk the csc is H3G.....so i use either H3G firmwares or BTU (which is the sim free uk version, which is actually what my phone came with).
i think you can actually flash any, but you'll probably find best results (in terms of signal etc, as well as carrier specific apps preinstalled) if you flash your carrier specific latest firmware?
if you tell us which network you're on it will help with recommending a firmware?
on sammobile.com i can see 5 options for portugal:-
Portugal - MEO
Portugal (Optimus) OPT
Portugal (TMN) - TMN
Portugal (TPH) - TPH
and
Portugal (Vodafone) - TCL

Hello.
I bought it unlocked, so I think I can use Portugal (TPH) - TPH.
So I think I can install that one. I thought I had to use the same as it says now (I9505XXUFNB8).

that is the software base.....which i think is sometimes the same in many countries across a region (europe). if you get the TPH one, latest will be FNB9.

So, if I install the origin rom from Samsung I can install other custom roms again, afterwards right?
My cell phone is rooted, installing Samsung original rom will not make it unrooted?

flashign back stock rom with odin will REMOVE root and will restore recovery back to STOCK......that's what the OP is trying to achieve.....to go back to totally stock.
if you want stock rom, you can still then reroot and/or flash custom recovery/rom after that.
i'm not 100% sure what you're asking here or what your goal is? the OP has a hardware fault with their phone so they are trying to restore back to stock (or as close as possible, s knox tripped already) so that they can try and get it repaired?

Sensors and MCU not working

Hi guys,
New owner of a S4 (GT-I9505 international) here with a problem. 2 days ago I noticed the screen wasn't rotating anymore. I used to rotate it portrait/landscape in applications like Camera or Internet (browser). The moment when it started to bother me was when looking at pictures with the phone in portrait and the image was landscape. Trying to rotate the phone didn't help. It was frozen. I called a buddy of mine who has some experience with Samsung devices and told me to verify the "Auto-Rotation" settings. It was all OK and enabled. Then he suggested turning the phone off and pulling out the battery and SIM card for 5 minutes and putting it all back. This didn't help either. Finally we got to the point where he told me to enter *#0*# in the Phone dialing application. As you might already know, this code gives you access to the "testing" hidden utility. There I tested all the options available. Everything was fine except for the Sensors and SensorHub Selftest.
In the Sensors section, all the tests failed, starting with the Accelerometer and ending with the Temperature. I uploaded screenshots taken during the tests. Please remember this started 2 days ago. Before this it was working perfectly. I don't recall making and major changes like updating any OS components or installing/running stress utilities related to sensors or device behavior. After doing some research online and reading about other people's similar problems I got to the point where I started to suspect a problem with the MCU (Micro Controller Unit). This component, according to Samsung, controls all the sensors and reads raw data from them without accessing the AP (Application Processor) this way extending the battery life. I believe the problem is here because it seems odd that none of the sensors are working all of a sudden. Can this component put the sensors into a sleep state and shut them down completely? Might this be the case here?
Below are the solutions I tried in order to revive the MCU and finally the sensors. I was all without success:
1) Turned off the phone and pulled the battery and SIM out. Put the back in after about 5 minutes. Result: sensors not working.
2) Reset to factory-settings from the settings option while the phone was in the working state (turned on). Result: sensors not working.
3) Rooted the phone, installed Clockwork Recovery, made a full system and applications backup and then installed custom ROM (two actually: PACMan, Google Play Edition (4.3)). I did this in order to exclude a problem related to drivers in the stock Samsung ROM, even if it was logical that Samsung being the owner and manufacturer of the device might have the "best" drivers and applications for inquiring the device components/sensors. I am aware this ended the warranty for me, but can I know it can easily be undone. Result: sensors not working.
4) Restored the original stock Samsung ROM. Result: sensors not working.
The utilities used for sensor testing were: Sensor Kinetics and Sensor Tester. Both can be found in the Play Store. On my wives phone, which is an old HTC Desire, both utilities picked up the available sensors and created graphs with the results. On my S4, I only got blank charts/graphics/results. In Sensor Kinetics for the Gyro for example, the message was "Waiting for the Gyroscope sensor...", just that, stuck.
If there are any other guys (or ladies!) out there who encountered this awful experience, please reach out and tell me if you found any practical solution, any other then just taking the device back to warranty. I'm open to any suggestions.
Best regards,
Andrei
Most likely a defective device ... can't you claim warranty and sent it back?
Sounds like hardware failure. This would be an issue for Samsung to solve.

Unfortunately I bought it second-hand and it does not have any warranty. I guess it's one of those moments I wish I had patience and gathered more cash to buy a new one from the store. Anyway, it's my bad luck. I had it working perfectly for weeks after buying it. I will use it like this for the time being..
i´ve got the exact same problem since yesterday...
i think i´ll take it to the shop for warranty
I've got the exact same issue. All sensors are having the same issue. None are working,
I found out because my camera app was not switching between landscape and portait any more. All pictures are saved as landscape...
Called Samsung Netherlands and they told me to wipe my phone (still latest original stock ROM) and try again.
Making a backup now using Kies... and will hard reset it afterward and check the sensors.again.
Probably not going to work... So I have to send it in...

Hi there. I had same problem with sensors and MCU test failed, so i took phone to service. They said its hardware failure and replaced main board. Im picking phone tommorow and we will see...
Hi guys,
I took mine to a local phone service, not the official one, but they are an affiliate. They could not figure out exactly what the problem was so they replaced the logic/main board just for testing. It was all working fine. They called and informed me of the findings. Given the fact I don't have warranty for it, they suggested to send it to our main service in Bucharest where they have a more sophisticated testing equipment. It is possible to get a more precise answer regarding the defective component and maybe a less pricey solution to the problem. At this time, the only viable option is to get a new logic board in place, which is about to set me back 250 USD. I will get an answer from Samsung in Bucharest by tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.
I will get back to you with my final solution... hopefully something not so expensive
@darklord, @eweu: please post back you findings. Maybe in the future when some other unfortunate owner finds his way in here, will have a better understanding of whats on the plate for him.
Thanks,
Hard reset did not work as expected. Going to drop it off at a local official repair center....

After installing some other ROM's and playing with different CSC's I have no sound and even no wireless and only Edge speeds on some ROM's. Restoring from backups, wireless came back and HSDPA+ also, but no luck with sound what so ever. Now, I have a tablet more or less. Thanks Samsung, this is great!

I have the same thing here
all sensors are broken because of SensorHub BIN FW Version: AT0199999
then i try to update firmware with *#2663# it failed.
I have the same problem with my S4 GT-I9505.
Suddenly the device do not auto-rotate, and no air gestures with gyroscope and accelerometer are working.
The SensorHubTest end with FAIL.
Mid december I got one OTA firmware update and I didn't notice any problems first.
A few days after newyear I notice that my auto-brightness adjustment did not work properly.
Can't remember if auto-rotate didn't work when I notice the auto-brightness problem.
But finally I am here because I searched for sensors problems.
I did the SensorsHub Test with *#0*# and it ends with FAIL.
It seems that there is a problem with the 4.3x firmware.
With 4.2x all was fine.
Can anybody confirm my thoughts - that the firmware is broken and not the MCU itself?
What can we try? Downgrade? I read that one was lucky with "factory reset" but it didn't helped to revive the MCU of my device.
Thanks for reading
and answering

Hi, i am a owner of a sch-i545 phone, and i have the same problem with the phone: no response of any sensor and a fail on test (or upgrade firmware) of the sensorhub.
At this time i was tried a lot of solutions: i was flashed stock firmware, custom firmware, and of course a factory reset (by the way, the first time with this problem was when i did it a single factory reset), its still broken the communication with the sensors.
I get back to life the phone when i upgrade the phone from 4.2 to 4.3 (sadly) and get lost when i update the binaries in super su (previously rooted with vroot).
Yesterday i give the phone to a technician (a close friend of another best friend), he will test the phone on this weekend to determine what is the problem to try to fix it.
When He fix this phone, i will post any news!
Regards.

Thanks for your answer. I have hope that the next firmware will fix it.
What is strange that none of any reseller/privers know this problem. It seems that also Samsung has no knowledge about this special error.
Well if the next firmware didn't fix the problem, I can replace my model with a working one, that is what the guy at the phone shop offers to me.

Same Problem Here
Hi guys, I'm new to this forum so be nice
I am having the same problem in that none of the sensors are working which indicates that it is a connection issue or the actual hub not working or the firmware and not the individual sensors themselves. I have thought about this and looked around and to me it seems like there are only 3 possibilities for the problem:
1) The SensorHub BIN FW Version is out of date and needs to be updated manually (not through *#2663 as it doesn't work)
2) There is a connection issue e.g. the cable from the sensorhub to the motherboard is loose or broken
3) The sensorhub is broken (not the sensors)
I will try to find the firmware files and see if I can do a manual update. If that fails I will open up the phone and see if the cable is connected/broken. If I still cannot solve the issue, I will have to take it to the shop and hope I can fix it off warranty (I bought it second hand)

Thanks Dan for your reply.
I assume that your S4 shows the same behaviour as my one and the phone is still working fine.
The sensorhubtest failed and your light sensor for automatic adjusting and the sensor for turning the display are not working.
What is really strange that I went to a vodafone shop in Hamburg and ask them if there is any other one having problems with the S4.
You know the answer? They where wondering and telling me that this is wierd and they heard the first time of such an issue from me.
I showed them the device and showed them how I test the sensors. *#0*# funny they didn't know this combo
I hope that you succeed and share your knowledge,
with best regards.

[Q] Possible faulty unit, bad software, bad RAM!? (Freezing / Random Reboots)

Hi Peeps,
I would just like to get some input from the community on a handset that I have and my situation.
So here goes...
I gave a friend of mine some money to order a Note 3 (SM-N9005), from Amazon and we went with the shopebest seller.
When I received the unit, I inserted my sim card, microSD, battery and booted the device for the first time.
When I got to the region/language part of the wizard, the device froze and rebooted (hard or soft, I don't remember) but then I was successful in choosing a language, etc, until it got to the part with agreeing with Samsung terms and if I wish for anonymous data to be sent, where it rebooted again.

The persistent notification bug has been resolved and I no longer receive that internal storage is low message.
I factory reset the device after every OTA with hopes of the random freeze to soft reboots from happening, I even feared that it was something on the XME ROM that was bugging it so I tried MM1 (factory reset), XSP (factory reset) and BTU (didn't factory reset) with the same issues.
There are also times the entire screen will glitch up, like a TV on the wrong frequency. It will also give me a black screen when taking a screenshot or using the lasso to select something from the screen to share, it will just be black and when that happens, I reboot, the problem is gone.
The time to send it back to the Amazon seller has gone. I just wanted to hold onto it in hopes that I can flash something like CyanogenMod that will wipe the phone and put on something that isn't Samsung related to see if I will have the same issues but CM isn't releasing anytime soon I suppose but CM was my LAST resort as I doubt that we'd be able to install it without tripping knox just yet.
The handset is a Malaysian one. Even though I missed my window of sending it back to the seller, (at least I think so because I did have my friend report it before the time), will Samsung be of any help?
I have tried using the phone with no sim and no sdcard but it will still freeze and reboot at some point.
I have tried using another sim.
I have tried MM1, XSP and BTU ROMs with no success.
I have factory reset with no sim nor sdcard and it happened, right at the region/language part just like first boot.
The next thing that I want to try is a new battery, if that fails, CyanogenMod might save the day.
PS. I live in the Caribbean (Barbados).
Any suggestion is welcome.
Knox is still 0x0 0x1.
My fix for the random reboots and freezing: Rooting and having SetCPU to "performance" and "noop".
On Jellybean, the problem never came back for a week or two but then I tried KitKat (dirty), where, the problem has returned but still not as much as I was having while unrooted.

Yes, factory sealed.
Yeah, it seems faulty but more like a software making the phone freeze.
I am actually looking at that post now but I am trying to backup my EFS stuff as we speak using the NV tools. I assume that this will void my warranty?

Hope this is just a software fault but not a hardware. However I dont think that software fault can make it freeze at the first time startup. Gud luck.
Mine also Malaysian (XME). Warranty? How you can get warranty while your phone is Malaysian and u stay in Caribbean ? I have rooted right after purchase because I dont stay in Malaysia too

IDK, I was thinking the nearest Samsung Centre *shrugs*
PS. The tutorial looks incomplete and the OP is working on a solution, I'm not quite sure if I want to perform that operation and mess anything up as I haven't even backed up my EFS folder. I would like to be able to do it without rooting. The EFS Professional button asks me for the phone even when I have it set to RMNET+DM+MODEM, so I am currently using the NV tool in the EFS Professional software to backup my NV.
Malaysia set from Amazon? This sound weird.
Country that have Amazon store - Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, United Kingdom & United States.
Amazon accept seller from country that don't have Amazon store?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From all comments you mention, it is highly your unit is faulty (too many random reboot & the low memory sound fishy).
Cyanogen ROM won't help if the set is default faulty.
You should return it during refund period, not keep testing this and that different country ROM.
I from Malaysia, I can 100% assured Note 3 XME set is solid stable out from the box. I buy on 1st day initial release in Malaysia.
So, just an update, the phone seems very stable after changing the CPU settings to "noop" and "interactive".
I have not had a fast reboot in a good while now.
I am wondering if it's faulty memory seeing that these 3GB RAM chips are new?
Or, it could be something kernel related to my device.
I checked the emmc with the brick bug software and it passed, so I assume that the emmc chip is OK.
Edit: two days and still no fast reboot, no freezing, no weird artifacts.
Edit: I have SetCPU to performance and noop and I have no have any random reboots or freezing for several days.

I brought in another one for a friend recently and it was France (BOG).
His is working fine, minus his unability to install the Sketchbook Pro for Galaxy Devices.
It's still quite possible that persons with functioning handsets, will get some of these issues later on.
I'm fairly disappointed, again, with Samsung.

[Q] Touch screen problems... not registering touches properly

So I really hope that someone can help me here as I seem to have a big problem... I'll try to write this out from the beginning...
Ordered my phone from Hong Kong. It is a D802 model. 3.4.0 kernel, d80210b software 32gb (likely the HK version right?). I knew that it was upgradeable to kitkat and so I downloaded the LG mobile support tool and plugged in my phone. I set the country and region to UK and set it to upgrade the software. Then I let it do what it does. At the end of the process the phone was stuck in bootloop on the LG screen with the indicator light switching between blue and green.
I then tried to fix it using the LG flashtool, but it wouldn't go into download mode and went to fastboot. I figured that it was stuck in fast boot and so I did the laf.img fix that is out there to try to restore download mode. The laf.img file I used was for a 16gb D802, not a 32gb like mine. I'm wondering if that is what created the issue that I have. Anyway, this allowed the phone to start in download mode and from there I flashed the software to Hong Kong d80210b 32gb.
This is where I noticed the big problem that I am currently experiencing and need help with. My phone screen does not register my touches in the right places. If I try to tap a location on the screen (an onscreen button) it will register the touch somewhere else completely. I thought that it might be an android version issue, but I upgraded to European open D80220D_00 (it doesn't seem to specify 16gb or 32gb) using LG flashtool 2014 and the issue remains the same.
I am unable to use the phone completely and I assume that the issue is deeper than the android version. I would really like to resolve this issue somehow. Does anyone have any idea? I'm thinking that if I could force a complete re-install of everything that might fix it. I was told by a useless LG rep (over the phone) that I would have to give my phone to my service provider and have them send it off to a technician to re-install the software, but I figure anything they can do I can do as well... right?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you!!
Seriously, all this knowledge and no one can offer me any help? Is there maybe some driver on the phone that is bad? Where would I find that? How would i replace it with a good one? Do I replace the Kernel? I don't really know how to go about this. Any help would be great.

You may not see the replies you want because alot of times your questions have already been answered and some of us have moved on to other phones etc and no longer visit these forums.
Search....
Your problem sounds like a faulty digitizer
I appreciate the response and info.
As far as searching goes, I did, for hours. I spent my long weekend here and all over the web looking for a solution with any possible number of keywords. I didn't come up with anything.
Faulty digitizer would make sense, although it appeared to be working prior to the upgrade... I would be happy for a faulty digitizer as that should be covered under warranty.
Thanks,
Mike
so sorry to burst your bubble but i don't think its hardware prob i have the same prob as you , ppl say update ur touch S/W and i know u cant cos u cant even dial 3845#*802# to do it , i also spend 2 days trying to fix it with no luck

[Q] firmware

Hi, I got a videotron (canadian carrier) note 4. Unlock and using it on rogers network. I bought it second hand, and seller didn't told me about the root..... On sammobile site, for the firmware, all canadian carrier have model sm-n910w8 as model #. Is it safe to flash rogers firmware on it? And is there a way to see if knox (probably been tick off) how many time and anyway to reset it. Looking through google but a bit lost. Thanks for your help
Bump
You can boot in download mode to check knox. If tripped it cannot be reset as of yet.
Thanks, that's what I was getting so, no biggies. Now, firmware side, beside sammobile, is that one look ok
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/unbri...alaxy-note-4-sm-n910w8-bell-rogers-telus-etc/
Mm might be for exynos chip note 4.... Not good I guess
Edit #2 http://samsung-updates.com/details/34574//SM-N910W8/BMC/N910W8VLU1ANIH.html
Seem better but not sure
I don't know much about north American models.
http://www.sammobile.com/2014/10/13...plained-by-region-connectivity-and-processor/
my guess is that any n910w8 firmware will work on any n910w8 phone, just different bloatware from carrier.
That's my guess also and as long as it is meant for Canada

bump
Followed that how to: http://youtu.be/WlHN7XPDvXQ go through all the prossess. Phone optimize the app.... How to get a return to stock, a full clean install. Any better walk through?

Just flash with Odin and then make a hard reset from recovery. Then download cereus. As of about the bloat you need root to remove anything that comes preinstalled
Cerberus is installed, just can't use it cause device is linked to another account...... Settler swear he bought it new... On kijiji.... Kind of funny I guess
It comes preinstalled on a Samsung official firmware? Never seen that

Would be very surprise was pre-installed. someone else with a N4 could confirm. I know that you can make cerberus a system app if rooted, so a hard-reset, from the phone wouldn't erase it, but I flash through odin, should erase all and put new rom.... Seller don't seem 100% legit if can say, He told me that i could get another security app.... he think that it"s might be the place that have unlock the phone that have put it on it,... thinking asking for a refund
And quick info, capacitive buttons, when they light up, do they look like with thin lines over them (thin black lines) or there is no interruption all white with nothing over

lol. looks like you got a fake note 4. the HDC ones have the black lines.

Air command open when button on stylus is pressed, dot show on screen as soon as stylus is about a inch of screen, a cursor like a | show if there is text under and keep pressing the button. Kies see the phone, as a note 4. What HDC mean? Saw a few pic where the line shows on the net. But still trying to get a refund from seller, he told me he wasn't a store, than he told me to give him the phone, he would sell it and pay me after.... Imei on phone and box don't match, and the one on phone, you google it and get result.... At least not blacklisted on protectyourdata.ca and using the phone.
Any input?

Can't take pictures: If I do, the phone reboots

Hello everyone,
I've been experience a very ugly issue with my S7 Edge.
SCENARIO 1: When the sensor works (meaning when I can see in the screen what the camera "sees") and I try to take a picture, the camera throws an error message saying "Unknown error occurred", and then the phone reboots:
SCENARIO 2: In other occasions, the camera starts with a complete black screen and immediately throws this error:
One of the two scenarios above always happen, which basically means I'm never able to take a picture.
What I've tried so far:
1) Upgrade from Marshmallow to Nougat.
2) Reset settings.
3) Full phone reset (cache + data).
4) Phone reset from recovery mode (cache + data).
5) The issue are present in safe mode as well.
6) I tried downloading other camera apps. Errors again.
7) Tried changing the storage location from SD to Device. Didn't work.
8) Video recording works!!!!!
Is it a hardware problem in your opinion? How can a software issue still stay after a hard reset? I'm not sure because in SCENARIO 1 I can see that the sensor works, plus video recording works!
Any help is greatly appreciated!
FIXED by using ODIN and flashing Nougat with the CSC file
Maybe try flashing full stock rom through odin or smart switch since there might be a problem to the system files itself.
In my opinion though, this seem like a hardware problem.

The problem re-appeared.
I also think it's a hardware problem. I'm just gonna send it back to Samsung.

I've been having the exact same issue for months now. On 6.0, 6.0.1 and 7.0 as well.
Please let me know what Samsung tells you. The problem for me is that I bought the phone from amazon (8 months ago) and live in Argentina.
One thing I can't understand is that camera worked fine for the first couple of months. Also find really strange the fact that I'm able to take pictures with flash ON. Have you tried it?

I tried some days ago with the flash ON, and it didn't work (if I remember correctly). I didn't waste too much time, and as soon as I found out about the issue I sent it to Samsung for repair.
I have it back since today afternoon, and what I read from the attached papers is that there was a malfunctioning piece which they replaced. The list of operations Samsung did is:
- Boardswaping
- Software update (I doubt about this one as my phone was already updated)
I really think you should contact Samsung directly, and not Amazon. Here in Europe they have a good repair program: after max. 3 business days you get your phone back (and they will do the pick-up, and delivery). Maybe it's the same in Argentina.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info!
Do you know which board did they swap? The main board? :S
Argentina doens't handle international devices. I'd have to take the phone to de US .
I'll try to get it repaired here anyways.
Thanks again por the info.
