(those of you who have an Xperia Z1 [Compact] version that cannot be rooted - I recommend you don't watch these videos. You will get jealous and I do feel sorry for you)

Disclaimer: the mod does not work with the Xperia Z as far as I know - I've seen this question too many times all over the interwebz so don't even bother here. Other questions about the mod are welcome as long as it's not about the installing or flashing procedure.

You have some guts taking this phone underwater. I will never do that esp after seeing so many people cry as their warranty was denied bcoz of waster insertion.

I put my phone two times in water, I washed it two times also. No problems at all. Just the sound is a little lower when the water touch the phone.
But, after 10-15 min. it's all the same.
I don't wanna lose warranty with rooting and putting these features, but I'm eager to get them...
Putting your phone under water has higher risk of voiding your warranty rather than rooting your phone.

Hahaha, I did it a few times now, we'll more than a few let's say about 20 and no problems. the sound is lower because it clogs the speaker and mic but it's back to normal as soon as it dries out. this is my second Z1 (the first had some headphone problem and they replaced it) and both have survived numerous submersions
I just make sure all the ports are properly sealed

My phone got drowned with water, and covered under warranty. Because if the water damage was not for the users own fault, eg not closing flaps or something caught in them breaking the seal.
If Sony finds the phone has had water inside, the first thing they do is ensure that the flaps etc are closed and clear of debris, then conduct a pressure test, submerge the phone in water. If water is detected inside, then you have warranty because it is obviously a manufacturing or repair (if applicable) defect.
Lol at the people afraid of putting their phone under water. I've lost count of the times I've washed my phone or gone in the pool with it.

I wish service center here do the same test. Once I went there for touch issue and another guy brought his phone. The service center reception guy just told him that his warranty is void as water has entered and told his to pay 50% of the actual price to get a new one.
For my touch issue he told that I have enabled "show touch" in developer option and that's why I have it ?

Lol same here, I got my phone damaged somehow maybe after taking a shower with it( started flickering right after), and all flaps were closed etc but the screen started flickering and eventually died, sent it to sony, got it back with a new screen and outer housing, now the question is, is it still waterproof?
Have not rooted it yet, i got lazy to downgrade my firmware then root, then upgrade to keep root, currently the latest and greatest firmware cannot be rooted on the c6916

Yes, in the album, you will see movie creator icon on the bottom when you open up the 120fps video.
from there you can edit speed of any selected part again
It's more like who doesn't put their phone under water. 1 of the main selling points for this phone at the time anyway. I have done it countless times and no issues at all. I paid for a water proof phone it will take a dip with me when i want it to.

I don't like that video. As have been told, they didn't record it straight without video cutting also they didn't show if it works between falls, they didn't try to call if problem is only with display. If I want to guess what is wrong with that device I would rather say that only ribbon cable don't have good connection than device is broken.
You should understand guys that these people are sponsored. They might be getting so much from apple or sammy or lg, or even nokia. They need to make the competition look bad so that people would look the other way around. Sometimes they use these kinds of diversion "Oh I'm really surprised that the phone is holding up so well. The screen might be broken, chassis is junk, back plate/plastic/glass is also broken, but on the lighter side the phone still works flawlessly." ORR "This phone works quite well, but I just can't accept the fact that the loudspeaker isn't good enough."
About the loudspeaker diversion, they're just looking for something negative for their closing remarks. Because that's what usually sticks to people, the closing remarks.
Well, and one should always remember that one instance is no guarantee for other instances...
In these drop tests it can matter quite a bit if the angle in which the phone hits the pavement is just that bit off, or whatever other random influence. It is just AN indication, some ppl drop their phone once and it's immediately shattered. Others drop the same phone 10 times wth only minor dents as a result.
But my response was mainly because people shout "FAKE" or "PHOTOSHOPPED" at just about every video or picture posted on the internet, it was nothing personal @gm007

The reason they didn't show the phone working after each drop, is probably coz it broke after the first drop, which meant that there was no point in carrying on with the drop test. And they wanted to carry on with the drop tests. That's all!! Stop with the bribing nonsense.

why does Samsung made it vulnerable for the water to get in Galaxy S 5 with a non-screw back cover ?
it is IP67....
meaning dust cannot get in at all, regardless how fine it is (6)
and you can submerge it in water and have water jets fired at it (7)
i dont see any reason to doubt the waterproofing.
the phone has to be tested before getting an IP certification.

Im fairly sure that those certification numbers are mostly an estimate, I highly doubt your phone will be destroyed if you go a couple inches over the 1m mark. Sure, there is more pressure and its a risk you are willing to take but it should be fine.
Plus its better for Samsung to under-report the waterproof rating than to exaggerate and have to deal with the backlash of people with damaged devices.

It isn't an estimate. It was tested at those condition and passed it. Although there are no guarantees on what it will do beyond those conditions

It was tested at those specific conditions to gain certification but it wasn't tested until the device completely failed.
Hence why I say its an estimate, I highly doubt that 1m of submersion is the maximum threshold for the device and anything above that will result in spontaneous failure. The phone can probably handle quite a bit more than that but Samsung chooses to not advertise it as such.
Samsung left themselves a safety gap since they know customers will go above and beyond the rated limits and they don't want to have to deal with all the pissed off customers.

The active didn't use screws either, if you close the back properly there shouldn't be an issue.

It doesn't matter if its unibody or not Samsung or Sony. Rules for waterRESISTANT phones are the same. You cant dive with them.

Is Salt water really that harmful to the phone if you rinse it in fresh water immediately after its exposure to the salt water.
I mean if your going to dump it underwater to capture a couple images, I dont see why the Salt water should bother the phone.

Samsung is going to advertise the phone as water resistant and to a consumer's ears that will mean waterproof. People will take the phone way below 1m under water and will probably complain if it gets damaged, the thing I'm wondering is will the warranty cover water damage?

Doubtful, this is why i also get a third party insurance on my devices. Cover everything except loss/stolen phone. I'm sure the youtube videos will be entertaining though! Really stuck between getting the S5 as my first Samsung device, the Z2, or the new HTC but have yet to see what they offer. I'm really liking the water resistant feature though and doubt HTC will have it to offer a hell of a lot for my personal interest. Seems HTC is always 6-8mths behind everyone else. Upgrade is soon for me.

My Xperia Z1 Compact has been sent in to the repair center now because of a waterdamage caused by a leaking backcover / frame whick killed the camera button first and then the mainboard. All flaps and so were closed and no water got in that way. 2-3 weeks and I'll have my Z1 Compact again.
Anyone else who've been sending in their phones on warranty because of waterdamage? How did it go? Did they replace the phone or did they just repair it?

Yes, I was terrified whem my phone broke as I've only had it for 2-3 weeks . I hope that they'll resolves it, otherwise I will just use my insurance.
And this phone, Xperia Arc S, drives me crazy as it's slow and sluggish.

well mine survived the pool, hot sun. used it more than 30 mins in wet conditions, ans 20 mins straight underwater on 2m depth.
2 weeks later, now, no issue at all.
just the sound bug in kitkat my alarm struggles to ring, but its funny

Man, I don't even want to know how Sony is going to handle warranty claims based on water damage.
It's going to be a nightmare. At least in Germany, where mobile phone companies try a lot of things to avoid a warranty repair / exchange.
How will it be possible for the consumer (and Sony) to determine whether it was an open port or a valid claim....?
How are things going to play out if Sony claims that it was an open port - and I'm sure it wasn't.
Those are the concerns that make me keep my Z1c dry at the moment...

Yup happened to me.
What happened was, I bought this in Taiwan on my honeymoon and to test the "WaterProof" claim, I threw it in the ocean in Guam, took under water photos with it and it died a few hours later.
Sony said that they it is waterproof only in FRESHWATER but the repair center was nice enough to send me a brand new replacement unit. Since this was a product outside of the USA region, they actually went out of their way to import it and send it to me. The process took a month but I'm happy they made the effort!

Indeed the Z1c is only rated for fresh water with the explanation that salt water will conduct electricity between the two magnetic charger points...
I don't know about that, but at least they gave an explanation...

My fones back is somewhat creaky.. should i be worried about this waterdamage stuff? I use it in water alot and dont want to ruin it but i got a waterproof fone cause i wanted a 'waterproof' one! I want to install the glass back to maby make it more solid.
howdy all,
bought my device early february in germany and took it into a freshwater pool standing and taking a couple of underwater face shots via the camera button.
shortly after that the display startet to get all distorted and i powered it off all the way and took out all cards. i thoroughly airdryed it with the car vents on my way back home and was able to revive it.
a couple of days later i repeated the procedure in the said pool and it killed the device - it shut down and upon restart it got stuck at the battery symbol.
all indicators had turned red even though i am sure i closed all holes correctly and did not exceed the depth limitations!
since there was no saturn in my city i returned it to mediamarkt, who luckily exchanged the device to a brand spanking new one- i doubt they send it to sony care center before that!
lucky me, i guess!
left wondering how far i can go with my new device and what the cause for this dreaded leakage might have been !!!???

Sorry folks but I am not going to take a risk to use the phone under water just to take two silly pictures. I think it's nice to have a phone that you can use while it rains, but if I really want to take pics underwater I just buy a camera. Also this 30 minutes limit sounds kinda silly, I never heard a waterproof device that goes by time.
I am not sure how sony got that rating approved, or even if the rating is approved or not.
i put mine under water quite a few times (fresh water) never an issue. be certain your flaps are closed 'n stuff
i even showered with it for the heck of it

Yesterday I used my z3c underwater for 15 min around; in starting it works well but after some time screen gone black shut down with 1 blink .Now its not starting on; tried dry up but no luck.Finally in morning I called sony customer care with hope of replacement but they only logged a job for fonebiz service provider and asked me to despatch my phone to their mentioned address via post.I did trust on Sony that phone is waterproof that i used underwater but failed.Even before use underwater i double check my flap and did pressure test.
Now i am sending my phone to fonebiz guys; god know what they will do assessment.Anyone face this issue??

Everyone should do the pressure test (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56153139&postcount=46) before taking in water and sending it for warranty if it fails the test.
I followed the all guided instruction before went underwater; Pressure test, flap covered check n all.
there was no human error; this case is totally failure of underwater test of z3c. I took phone underwater on trusting on the big brand name SONY but totally upset

There never was full immersion water proof. If your phone got wet inside, sony just stated that phone flaps wasnt closed properly before immersion.
I think it was south africa who denied sony to adverdise z1 as phone that you can fully immersion to water

Well, it's a long discussion of what was and what wasn't. Some phones were definitely waterproof and Sony undeniably marketed their Z line at least as fit for taking underwater photos. My zr swam under water with no issues. But it's also true that many people had ruined their Xperias like that. This is the first time Sony actually says: don't put it under water. And it's a shame.

I wanna buy this phone, are you sure it isn't waterproof? I had an Xperia Go which is not a very good phone, but anyway I used to throw it in the pool and nothing happened. I'm also curious if you can take under water photos with this phone.
I have seen videos on YouTube of people putting it in a glass of water and I have read that some people's phones (regarding earlier z generations) were not waterproof while other's were.

I view it as a safety net to protect against accidental spillages and unpredictable weather rather than a feature designed to be intentionally exploited. I don't intend on purposely testing out the waterproofing capabilities!

Excuse me, what's misleading about it?
- marketing campaign clearly showing Z series (before z4) being submerged and taking underwater photos
- accidents happen to quite a few phones (some might have been submerged without proper cap attachment but I'm sure you don't believe all Xperia users are stupid enough to forget a simple gesture such as attaching the caps)
- Sony saying now you should not submerge the phones.
That's what the thread is about, and these are all facts.

I think we are safe to use or have the phone under the shower and all that.
But don't submerge it in water with soap/foam (in a bathtub), chlorinated water (swimming pool) or even potable water if you are living in a zone with a lot of calcium (bathtub / glass of tap water. Just look at your pans to know about this). If it is a more alkaline water, it would be less risky.
Of course we can do this for a short time to film a video or something. But there are risks.

No there is no risk if you take care of your phone. The phone should be good when the water pressure dont get above 1.5bar so aslong as you dont go in flowing water or dive with it, it should be fine.

No it makes more sense if you use your brain. Youtube is just a sample of what the phone can do so its not only waterproof on youtube but also IRL.

The problem is that this 1.5bar figure is for normal tap water.
Everything what thesebastian mentioned lowers this figure. Soap lowers surface tension so soapy water can get past the seals at lower pressure. Salt and chlor can damage seals which lowers the maximum pressure they can take permanently. Water is not = water.

Example: A youtube video of a phone falling 2 meters and not breaking.
Would you take that as proof they the phone in question will not break under such conditions?
No, of course not. It just means that it there is a *possibility* of it not breaking after a 2m fall. This is precisely because the youtube video is a sample of "what the phone can do". It cannot show the whole picture - and other possibilities what the "phone can do" is "break after the fall".
Same with the dunking video. The question is not if it can get damaged by water, that one is already answered. 100% waterproof does not exist. Even if the phone is normally 100% waterproof, there is always the chance of defects.
So question is the probability of it getting water damage. That chance can be any number- 0,001%, 1%, 5%, 25% or 75%. A youtube video of a single device getting submerged cannot show this.

Well i said youtube gives you a sample of whats possible and if you take care of your phone then you can use it in all sorts of different water types aslong as you clean it after. But the point is that not everyone uses their brain and think it can handle all without doing some checking etc before you gonna do it like check testmode and see if its waterproof before you dip it into water. Problem is that people use it in flowing water etc that raises the water pressure or go diving with it. I tried it so many times with my z3c and never had 1 problem even in salt water alsong as you clean it.

No thats not what im saying but the thing is you will always hear first from people that screw up some how or got a bad device and still went under water. Like 99% of the people that have a good working device with no problems are less eager to start a topic or to respond to a topic. And yes you will always have some people that take it to far and those are the ones that dont think before they do anything.
Note that the water coming from the shower might be more than 1.5 bar.
Moving the phone in water might make the relative pressure more than 1.5bar.
It's the same problem with watch. The pressure of specifications are intend for non moving stuff in non moving water. It's like when you put your and thru the windows of a running car, the air is at normal pressure but on your hand, you feel the resistance increase with speed.
