[Q] Text Blocking - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've been googling and searching and having trouble nailing down the answer.
Friend of mine has the Galaxy S5 through Verizon
Keeps receiving texts from somebody that she doesn't want to receive texts from.
I've been trying to locate how to block the incoming text. On my S4 I see where I can choose to add the contact to "spam number." I don't see this option on the S5. I looked at the blocking list, but this only blocks a phone call I'm assuming since I added the number and she is still receiving the texts. Anywho, I was going to look in the app store but was wondering if I can do it natively. Thanks for any help.

Go to a text message from the person, tap menu (three dots on top right) , scroll down the menu and 'add to spam numbers'

If it's not there, it's Verizon messing with the phone to make room for their bloatware. How the hell they get away with that I don't know.

Yea, I should have said that doesn't work. Nowhere is there an option to add to spam numbers. That's why I'm having so much trouble. You can't long press on the message. You can't menu into it. You can't go into applications/messaging/spam. Nothing. I'm baffled.

Open the text message sent to you, while on that screen, you will see three vertically aligned dots on the upper right corner of the screen. Touch it to open the menu. Scroll down and you will see "add to spam numbers".

Nope. It's not there. First thing I tried. I can't find an option, in the phone, regarding "spam numbers" at all. Zero.

Weird. All stock firmwares should have the same interface and accessible menus. Maybe she's not using S5?

When you press the 3 dots and the menu pops up you can scroll the menu up for more options..

Verizon tends to remove a lot of features on their phones. Download booster is removed as well.

On my AT&T model using AT&T messages, you click the message, then menu (3 vert. dots). Then add click "add to contact"..."create new". then name it and save it. Within that same new contact, click the menu button at top right. There is an option to "add to reject list".
it may be similar on Verizon if it's not in the top level menu.

Maybe they do that, I'm not familiar with what they do though . I can only think of a reason they did that, maybe they are offering the spam/blocking as a network service for a fee.

Knowing Verizon, they probably do.

I had done this. But it only blocks the phone call. Not the text.
I'm assuming the same as one of the other guys here. I bet if I called Verizon they offer it as a fee. Which is a load of BS.
And yes, it is an S5.

Alternatively your friend could go to the police and file a formal complaint regarding harassment if you cannot find a block button.

Call/Message block setting enabled?
Hey guys, you can try this if you want:
You basically just need to add this to your CSC settings and it will enable a dedicated call/message blocking options in your settings.
This was posted for the Note 1 at the time but I tried it on my Note 3 and it works perfectly fine. I'm thinking it will work perfectly fine for your S5's.

[TIP] Hidden call settings on Epic

I haven't seen a thread for this yet, so I thought I would share. After installing Launcher Pro, I was playing around with the shortcuts and Activities. Under Call settings there is a hidden menu named "All Calls". If you create a shortcut you will have access to the auto reject call menu and will have the ability to enter phone numbers, or select numbers from the call history, that should be automatically rejected. The nice thing about it is the phone doesn't ring or vibrate. Since I forward my office line to my cell, I get a lot of solicitors and its great to be able to dump them automatically.

Nice find. I wish I would have discovered this sooner. I actually bought "Group to Voicemail" on the Market a few weeks ago because I needed this functionality. Oh well. It's a nice app and the dev seems cool.
LOL...
i just noticed this menu is NOT in the epic..lol
this is a regular menu in all other android phones i had use, such as the moto droid and the nexus one
Define how I am supposed to find something "hidden". Kinda confusing. I have Launcher Pro isntalled and see nothing about this under settings/call settings. Wanna elaborate?
Go to a blank spot onto your phone. Tap as if you were going to add a widget or shortcut. Go into shortcuts, activies, call settings, and tap all calls. It will create a shortcut which u go into and will see the auto reject feature.
I believe you must have LauncherPro. This is not in the settings menu.

You have to enter the number without any dashes or spaces.

No you don't have to leave it on the home screen, but it makes it easier to add more numbers later if you do. Personally, I have a folder on my home screen that contains that shortcut and shortcuts to other apps and settings I frequently use.
Metallica76 - thanks for clarifying those additional steps. My apologies everyone for not being more specific on the actual steps for creating the shortcut.
Now if I can just find the "send to voicemail" option everyone says is in the contacts settings, which clearly is not there.

You can also press the icon next to the entry field to add a number from your contact list or from your call log (although you will have to remove any dashes included).

Air View not working on lock screen for text messages

In the pool party commercial for the S4, they show a girl checking her text message on her lock screen by hovering her finger over the "New Message" box on the lock screen.
Here is a link. It happens around 1 minute:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2TtdM4iI5k
Maybe it's not a lock screen but a widget of some sort? It looks like either a lock screen or home screen.
True. Can't tell but it's either home screen or Lockscreen. Both where previews don't work with air view?

I wasn't able to get it to work on the lock screen. The box shows up looking just like the commercial but hovering my hand doesn't do anything. I'm wondering if this is a feature not in the AT&T version... I tried doing it as a widget on the home screen but it also didn't work with air view.

You have to click to the left of the on off toggle for air view in the settings.. It will bring up a menu and make sure information preview is selected.. Also if the whole message can be seen in the message preview on the lock screen it won't air view... It has to be more than the preview can show

So have you gotten it to work? In my lock screen, the box says "New Message" but doesn't show ANY of the text. Do I need to make a new widget on my lock screen or something? Air view isn't working over the standard "New Message" box that shows up on the lock screen by default. If you could take a pic of where the air view is working for you on the lock screen, that would be great.
Yeah after figuring it out I've been using it a few days now... If its not showing any part of the message open the messaging app.. Then settings and make sure message preview is checked

I'm going to reiterate the steps since I think I wasn't clear enough in the first post I made here..
To enable airview and get the messaging preview from it like the pool party commercial is a two step process Samsung did not enable the information preview from the factory so you must do this yourself..
Step one: goto your phones settings then my device and scroll down to airview.. Make sure the button next to the word airview is green THEN tap the word airview and it will open a sub menu with 5 settings in it.. Make sure information preview is turned on and green
Step 2: open the messaging app and hit the menu button to access settings..scroll down to notification settings and make sure message preview is checked off with the green check mark (again Samsung did not enable this by default so you must check it yourself)
To test text yourself or have someone text you with a few sentences and hover your finger over the notification on the lock screen it will bring up the bubble like in the commercial.
If the entire message can be seen in the preview on the lock screen (ex: hey) then airview will not doing anything here.. Its only for messages larger than the preview can display..
If your notification on the lock screen only shows 1 new message you do not have message preview enabled under the messaging app..
Airview and information preview will allow you to hover over your calendar (app not widget), and in the email app (not gmail) as well.
Also yes I am on an AT&T S4

[Q] Messaging > New Message

I truly love my S4 but this is driving me insane.
When receiving a message instead of telling me who it's from and an idea of what the message is... I get this:
Edit: Apparently I can't post an image of the issue until after 10 posts. In any case, my notification, both on the lock screen and on the notification bar, say Messaging, and underneath says New Message. Normally, or at least with my S3, it would show who the text message is from, and then a small preview of what the message says.
Has anyone else had this issue or know of a fix? I am trying to stay away from rooting my phone, for now. I am using Nova Launcher Prime but I don't see why this would effect anything. A reboot has done nothing so far.

Thanks. For some reason I didn't think to go into the settings of the actual messaging screen. I was able to put a check mark beside "Preview Message" and that has solved my issue. Thanks Again!

I guess Samsung left it off to keep the privacy of unexperienced users on Android that have no idea how to change settings by themselves.

[Q] Icons missing from Galaxy S5!

I'm frustrated!
I want to edit the order of my "Quick Settings" in the Notification bar, but there is no icon (the pencil icon on the right side up) where it should be!
Also, when I press the "Options" button (the three squares) in the Settings page, most option are missing!
The only one that appears is 'List view' (to a total of 2 views - 'Grid view' and 'List view'), whereas the third view, the 'Edit quick settings' and the 'Help' options are missing!
I've got pictures to prove my point and help you see my problem but, unfortuately I can't post them here.
What is wrong? Is it because of the edition of the phone?

Depending on the device model and also the firmware version, there are some variation of the Settings menu. So I cannot realize what is your Settings menu structure.
You can open the S Finder and enter 'notification panel' to search.

[Q] What is this Icon and how do I stop the spam

Please see the icon in the upper tray to the left.
The Header says:

I'm not using the Samsung messaging app as default.
I'm not seeing this message in Go SMS or the Samsung messaging app.

I think it's related to Samsung somehow, as the symbol is within a grey circle in the drop down screen, similar to other Samsung apps.
Edit:
See attached photo........
Edit #2:
If it does have anything to do with Opera, I just went into Settings/Notifications and changed the setting to 'Denied.'
Ultimately, I'd like to block the morons, if possible.
Pull down the notification shade, long press on that notification, and that should end this mystery.
