[Q] CWM doesn't show back/restore options - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Edit title: [Q] CWM doesn't show backUP/restore options
I have an N9005 which I rooted using Chainfire's excellent CF-Auto-Root, I have since updated it to 4.4.2.
I've decided finally which ROM I want to switch to (Assassin) and so was trying to make a backup of my current ROM. It was then I found that all my recent on-line nandroid backups had failed (they worked about a month ago) so I booted into recovery to run a backup there and found that there is no backup restore option listed!!!
According to ROM Manager, I have CWM 6.0.4.8 installed (I've tried updating it with ROM Manager - no change) but it only lists six options...
Android system recovery <3e>
KOT49H.N9005XXUENB4
Volume up/down to move highlight;
power button to select.
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe date/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
{Android on back with red ! triangle}
# MANUAL MODE #
-- Appling Multi-CSC....
Applied the CSC-code : VAU
Successfully applied multi-CSC.
Can anyone suggest what is going on. It looks similar to CWM that I'm used to from previous devices, but it says nothing about CWM when booting into recovery. If it weren't from ROM Manager, I'd guess it isn't CWM.
Can anyone suggest how I can get the correct options in recovery? Thoughts, suggestions?
Edit: managed to get online nandroid backup working by reinstalling busybox but still would like recovery working properly before trying to install the new ROM.

Looks to me like stock recovery overwritten CWM and you now have tge stock recovery. You have to flash back CWM to gain access to it.

Just try to flash CWM in Odin again. Use XDA search and type in N9005 CWM.
Just a little suggestion...don't use restore in recovery on CWM I heard it is not the best method to restore. Try titanium backup or something related. Also look for twrp(never used it but restore was working better I think) or Philz touch recovery which has nice settings and look(I'm on it right now haven't used restore though).

Hey, thanks for your replies.
Yeah, I finally came to the same conclusion, looks like Rom manager was lying to me all along, it had never actually installed CWM after I upgraded to kitkat. Even after I eventually pushed 6.0.4.7 onto the phone via odin, it still said I had 6.0.4.8 installed, not quite sure what is going on there but all is good now.

Clockwork Mod recovery mode ??????

I am having a problem accessing clockwork mod recovery mode, no matter what process i try it consistently takes me to android recovery instead.
info:
samsung fascinate
rooted
Did odin flash back to stock
Did factory reset back to stock
Did software ota update to the following specs:
HV i500.04
M# sc i500
Firmware 2.1 update 1
Baseband S: 1500.04VD101
Kernel 2.6.29
Build SCH i500 DH101
Installed CWm Recovery from market
Installed Asto file manager from market
Installed Titanium backup from market
Opened CWM application
Went through root permissions dialogue
Flashed CWM recovery to 2.5.1.0
Next i clicked on BACK UP ROM which reboots me into Android Recovery Mode and gives me the standard 4 options for the fascinate:, plus it says installation was aborted:
1.After failing to find update package
2. open update package
3. verify update package
At this point i click on the home button and reboot system now.
Next i try flashing a different CWM Recovery version to 2.5.1.1 , 2.5.1.3 , 2.5.1.4 , all resulting in and error message, so i am still using 2.5.1.0
Next i try toclick on manage and restore backups but there are no backups listed even thouigh i did back up Rom earlier.
next i try to install the Geeknik ROM( Stupidfast v1.23(D101) from the Download ROM section.
I click OK to dialogue box that ask do i want to Down Load Rom
The Stupidfast ROM download starts and finishes
Notification bar says download is complete so i click on notification bar and this takes me to dialogue box which asks do i want to back up existing rom and wipe data and cache . i say yes to both and click OK.
Next dialogue box asks do i want tot reboot. i click Ok
i am then taken back to Android System recovery.
No matter what i do in Clockwork Recovery i always end up back at Anroid System Recovery. i have tried all different scenarios -debugging checked.debugging unchecked, clear cache, dont clear cache, back up rom, dont back up rom, usb connected, usb unconnected, Titanium in,titanium out. watched all different you tube videos on subject.
sorry this was so long. i didnt want to miss any answers to any question any of you might have if at this point you want to offer any help. thanks in advance.
You have to flash CWM with Odin before you can use it. Can't just install from the market or ROM Manager
Kevin, Thanks for your response to my question.
i thought i already flashed CWMRecovery from within ROM Manager. it is the first option at the top of CWMRecovery, also it states under that first choice that my latest recovery id Clockwork Mod 2.5.1.0.
If i scroll down to the bottom of CWMRecovery the last choice shows all of the CWM Recoveries. Recovery 2.5.1.0 is listed at the bottom and is the only one i can flash/install.
In both instances it says that i have flashed this version(2.5.1.0) of CWM Recovery.
I will try whhat you are suggesting and thanks again for the help, it is appreciated
Kevin , I followed your instructions and flashed the CWMrecovery.tar file with Odin3_1.3 and everything is as it should be. The funny thing is (at least to me) that the CWMrecovery version that is listed when i am in recovery mode now is CWM version 2.5.1.0, which is the same version that i flashed within rom manager. Kind of confusing but at least i am where i want to be. Thanks again for the help.
Yeah, it's just one of the quirks with the Fascinate. Unlike most devices, just flashing Clockwork with ROM Manager only puts the update.zip on your SD card. Using Odin to flash the .tar file installs the recovery, so both parts are needed.
where i need to put CWMrecovery.tar in ODIN in which section PDA/PHONE/CSC? 1nx
You only flash things in PDA section, doing otherwise will screw up your phone

Im kinda new to all this stuff and just wanted to get some step by step stuff if you dont mind. I rooted my Fascinate tried clockwork mod wouldnt work when i tried to backup after downloading the recovery thing and when i read this you guys said something about Odin so I went to appbrain and downloaded tuxility but now im lost on what to do. Maybe something step-by-step would be good. Really appreciate it! (ps: I know im kinda slow but if you wouldnt mind...)
The stock recovery does not allow us to run unsigned zips. Thus, we must flash the CWMrecovery.tar to patch recovery to allow us to run these unsigned zips. Then you can flash CWM from within Rom Manager.
Follow these instructions from fallingup's thread:

THANKS
Thanks ALOT this looks really simple the only thing that idk about is how it said to put it in download mode. Idk what that means. Debugging? and do I mount it? Thats all i think. THANKS agian.
Download mode: power off, pull out battery, with Odin open and USB connected to PC hold volume down and plug in USB.

rooted S2 but cant install clockworkmod recovery - help

it worked fine,
downloaded ROM manager app, flash clockworkmod recovery, selected S2, successfully downloaded clockworkmod recovery. then reboot to recovery via CWM app.
went to the recovery with menu

Install one of these kernels http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
thanks for the reply, that's funny cos i am actually already looking at this thread
but the problems is the last of kernal name like KG1 etc, but my is 2.6.35.7.I19100XWKDD-CL161513

so i dont know which kernal to use, which one would you suggest?
thanks again
Hmm interesting, that's a fairly old firmware without a cfroot kernel, try installing kies and see if there's a firmware upgrade for your phone.
i am really confused now,
opened kies software, detected S2, then what? there is no option to see if there is newer firmware or whatever
thanks again
Actually forget about kies. Download the latest kh3 firmware and flash it in download mode, then flash the cf-root kh3 kernel.
got the email notification from you, you said forget the odin hehe
so i flash kh3 firmware via odin yes?
1) Install Kies(only install it, do not run it or Odin will not work)
2) Download odin 1.85
3) Set phone to usb debugging (settings > applications > development > usb debug
4) open odin (and mount the firmware tar file or files, see specific threads for how and or what)
5) Shut down your phone and reboot it into download mode
6) Flash through odin

That's what i would do, place the CORE file as PDA, MODEM file as PHONE and any one of the CSC files as CSC. After its installed flash the cf-root kernel.

no no, I meant he needs to install kies, thats it. He should not have kies running in the background or even running in the windows tray at all, when flashing with odin. Edited my post to make it more clear
When I rooted mine, all I had to do was to flash an insecure kernel (you can get much newer versions now than the KDD, up to even KH1 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101671&highlight=insecure+kernel), then use superoneclick to root. Superoneclick will flash in CWM recovery for you, so after superoneclick, just reboot straight into recovery. No need to flash anything else unless you want the CWM Rom Manager app.
Superoneclick doesn't give you clockworkmod recovery, you need a CWM kernel, as in samsung land recovery and kernel live in the same happy little place.
Newer stock firmware+cf-root is the easiest way, you may lose your app data though, so backup (try titanium backup, only restore user app data or data in green)
thanks for the replies
i downloaded the KH3 rar file, extracted to a folder. see the screenshot in attachment
which ones?
thanks again
Place the CORE file as PDA, MODEM file as PHONE and any one of the CSC files as CSC. After its installed flash the cf-root kernel.

OMG!!! I've got the same problem with you.
I had the same thing, what i did was from the cwm app i downloaded the latest cm7 nightly, once installed and it pops up skiing do i want to instal and wipe etc i clicked yes, the phone rebooted and an android symbol appears and nothing happened.
So i long pressed the power button to switch it off, when i switched it back on, the phone starts installing cm7, once that completes, everything was normal how it should be.

[INFO/DISCUSSION] ClockWorkMod Recovery 5.5.0.4 Tf101

PLEASE USE THE CWM UPDATE BY KOUSH ONLY.. ALSO, PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT CWM VERSION 5.5.0.4 has been reported to have some freeze issues, contact Koush and forward a logcat or provide information so he can resolve. Until then, use an earlier version until all the bugs are gone..... thank you--- oka1 moderator

Today I noticed That Koush Has released CWM 5.5.04 for Our device. So simply You can Download Rom manager from Market and then just install the CWM.
AllCredits go to KOUSH.
Here IS the .img file.
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.5.0.4-tf101.img
Installed fine. Reboot to recovery still doesn't work for me. Still works fine when using the app from the market though. Thanks for the heads up.
Reboot to recovery messed up my tab, so it would only boot into recovery (booting to Android was done manually).
works either manually or via market app reboot to recovery, via ClockworkMod restart the system, is not in recovery
"reboot system now" does not work, reboot into recovery again.
Same to me on my tab. Don't install it yet.
Unable to install either through rom manager
or
Terminal method
Rom manger says it installed it but when I reboot to revocery (via another app)
it's still the old one
Terminal emulator says image not found no matter where I store it or what directory I point to
Seems like I'm missing something.
The linked .img file is a blob file with the SOS partition. It can be flashed through the staging partition. If you extract it or strip out the header, it will be a regular .img file that can be flashed through cwm (with a little work).
I haven't flashed it yet.
Same here, unable to boot android again (recovery loop), is there any way to flash the old one from adb?
Thanks
bug
since i have instal it i can't go out of the recovery when i do restart and it reboot in recovery again
go out by pressing power button + volume down , wait a moment and you can select recovery or boot android os
If you go into advanced there's no option to return.
Wasn't there a bug about installing recovery with Rom Manager that causes constant boots into recovery?
let me look...
EDIT: This may or may not apply, but ...

Official, yes, see here the 5.5.0.4 for tf101, the .img and .zip:
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/
I should have read more of this thread before flashing. Because now mine does what everyone else is doing. Goes back into the recovery in a loop..
If You have problems return to the older:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346180
=================
mine flashed fine from rom manager pro on Eos-tf101-5 All menu's seem to work fine, but there is no external SD access only internal. Still can't access recovery from rom manager but that's the same standard issue with the rom.
it support tf101g or not ?
Cant flash a new recovery either.
Tried reflashing rogue and still boot loops into cwm.
Downloaded current cwm from web link above and flashed. Still boot loops into recovery.

I would love to go back to the older one...But my Tab doesnt show the sdcard at all. Only internal memory...weird
Flashing the IMG via NVFLASH broke recovery for me. Installing it through ROM Managers works fine.

No CWM special menu in recovery mode? Even though it says flash was successful.

First off, I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 SGH-i337 from ATT.
It has a Kingo Android Root on it, it was the easiest one and I didn't know what else to do, it all sounded pretty confusing. If this root is bad, I'd appreciate help on how to remove it and get another without erasing phone data.
Now, the problem here, is I downloaded ROM Manager and flashed CWM 6.0.4.7, it said that the flash was successful and that everything was functioning. However, as soon as I go into recovery mode, I see the old android recovery menu, with the lame old regular menu:
Android system recovery <3e>
Reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
I cannot do a backup and I don't see the special CWM recovery settings. What's the problem? I'm hoping any of you can help! Also, I'm noob in terms of root etc... Idk what flashing is, or custom ROMs, or anythin, I just know that I wanted to get CWM to get PDroid and for the extra backup from CWM.
Thank you very much in advance!
The problem most likely is you have firmware newer than mdl. The only recovery you can use if that's the case is safestrap. Please see in the general forum, index all things at&t..... Read it and learn before you do anything else.

CWM crashes OS when I try and make a backup.

I managed to root the Note 3 with CF- Root. Currently on 4.4.2 EE. That was easy. I then installed CWM and it advised I needed to update the app which I do. If I then ask it to make a back up it reboots in to recovery but does not appear to do anything? If I then reboot the device the App's all crash one at a time. The only way to resolve is to wipe/Factory reset.
I am not sure what I have done wrong here? This is not a boot loop....It just bombs the current rom.
Nothing? No advice? As this is not a boot loop searching has not really helped.

Who do you ask to make a backup ? Which app have you installed ? Cwm Rom manager ? Did you even install cwm recovery within the app ? If you updated the app, with that you didn't install the recovery.
You must power off your phone and reboot to recovery with the 3 button combo. Then, when in recovery, make a backup (if you have a custom recovery installed ?). Don't use any "boot to recovery and make a backup" apps or such, it can screw things up.
But my advice, install the latest twrp recovery. Definitely better.
Thankyou for taking the time to answer.
Yes I installed clockwork Mod. It said it was installing Cwm and offered the option to reboot and make a current backup. Which it then seems to fail. I see no manual option to make a back either when in the boot menu.
I'll try twerp and see what happens. I used to use Cwm a long time ago on a first gen galaxy and it was great. Something is just amiss this time.
Yeah, it didn't install cwm recovery, otherwise you would have the option to backup. Stock recovery doesn't have that option.
Last time i checked, this cwm manager wasn't the best option to manage your backups and restores. The 3 button combo to boot into recovery and then make a backup or restore is the way to go.
I too had problems with cwm in the past, but then i went for twrp and all is good. Plus, imo, it has a nicer touch interface.
