Failed on my N8010.
Checked GT-N8013-KK-WiFi-Fix.zip and cannot understand how it worked. What's the function of the files which are put into /data?
And if this doesn't work on N8010, is there another way I can try?

This worked for me

Try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53065121&postcount=77 (just ignore the Tip)
I tried in on a N8010 and this worked for me, but I think it's essentially the same. I assume the only difference is that the boot.img from the leaked ROM is inlcuded in the tar in this guide and not in a flashable zip as in the guide from the other thread.
Also did you check, if one of your files was corrupted. If so, just redownload and retry

The /data files some how fix the IP address issue.
Did you root your phone yet? it may have to be rooted to copy to your userdata partition
When you install the ROM did you have to set it up? If you did not then you did not install on a clean system and that may cause issues.

Yes I Wiped almost everything before installing the ROM.
And yes I had to set it up at the first boot after installation.
And yes I root my phone with SuperSU 1.99r3.
So those files fix the IP address issue.
Can they be used on N8010 too?
Anyway I'll try it again later.

did you install the leaked boot.img? I had to install it to get wifi going, it would not work with the Official KK boot.img
I do not know about 8010, sorry

I failed yesterday with installing both the leaked boot.img and GT-N8013-KK-WiFi-Fix.zip.
I'll try the whole installation again When I got my N8010 later today.
Thanks for your answers.

Just installed and it works great! Now I don't have to wait!

Update OP

Please simplify post.
First, Thank you so much. In the words of the song Thrift Shop "This is freakin awsome!"
There is a lot of stuff going on in the OP. I haven't flashed in a while so I am rusty. This is what I am seeing:
Mega Link has all of the files that I need.
Install ROM using Odin (skip through settings and boot back to Download mode)
Use Odin to install Custom Recovery
Use recovery to install wifi fix, wifi only remove phone service and systemUI remove system icons
Finish.
What about the other files in zip? Do i need them? (N8013 pit), (CWM Touch), (Open Recovery)
Can I use Mobile Odin?
I just want to get it right before I flash this awesomeness.

I'm not very familiar with using odin. Which files are we putting into odin and where do I put them in? Also, is the PIT file required?

I would install one at a time say root then what ever other's, and then I would do a reboot then install wifi fix last after a reboot with root working

Cool. Now in my haste I did not click re-partition. Is that a problem? Should I reflash?

no you do not check that
if you install the pit file it will auto check

Working on my N8013
Just installed this and it's working fine for the most part

Warning
I decided to do a factory reset. BIG MISTAKE! I think I bricked my device. It is force closing in another language. When I flash the ROM again, it still does not work. It is getting late. Tomorrow I will flash stock ROM and then reflash this new one. Hope that works. Any suggestions?

Installing 4.1.2 manually via CWM fails

I'm trying manually install 4.1.2 on my rooted Nexus 7 with CMW.
I downloaded the zip, placed it on my Nexus 7, proceeded regularly to install zip
i selected the zip and it aborted, says Status 7.
Thanks to the community below are solutions to get the update to flash.
EDIT
Thanks to Logic_
You can flash this .zip instead which disables all the checks but do it at your own risk as it can brick your tablet
https://www.dropbox.com/s/isqpvb0w26....1.2edited.zip
This is the update with the checks disabled. I didn't make this, got it off another forum, I just used it because I had moved an update to chrome into my /system and there was no easy way to revert it.
I wouldn't advise using this if you made build.prop modifications, but it is useful if your update is failing over some apps like google wallet.

For those who've done some modding and can't remember what they did to pass the OTA asserts, all you need to do is dirty flash the system.img from 4.1.2 factory image in fastboot and eveything should work.

I got a similar error for build.prop file. I had changed it to enable/force auto rotation of the home screen when I was on 4.1.1. When I reverted the build.prop to its original file, it worked for me.
I see the error code is the same in your case as well. Is there a chance that you would have changed BrowserProviderProxy.apk?

It's from the side loading of the browser. I had this too. You have to restore those mentioned browser proxy file(s) to their original state. I also temporarily removed the browser apk from the system/app folder as well, although I'm not sure if this was required. The update installed fine after doing this.

I'm having the same problem. I cannot seem to flash the update with CWM. I haven't edited any of the system files or anything like that. Is it the fact that I'm using a different launcher that's causing the problem?

I'd like to know too. I get the Build.prop error too.
You've made no changes whatsoever? What about the kernel? Worst case just use mskip's toolkit to flash back to stock 4.1.1. Check the lag thread I posted what I did and it worked like butter.

Hi all.....
I'm currently using stock Nexus 7 and did all ways possible here to update and nothing worked, last thing I did was go to setting, backup and restore and hit factory data reset and buala automatically got the update to 4.1.2
Nota: this is not a recommendation but if u wanna try do a Backup and good luck.

I deleted the original browser files in the system/app folder too.
Found them on the rootwiki site here....
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/35089-can-someone-hook-me-up-with-browserproviderproxyapk/
Worked perfectly after
modded build.prob / update problems to 4.1.2
i have similar Problem
Picture
h**p://i49.tinypic.com/w979qt.jpg
i modded my build.prob to Landsape mode. I guess that i corrupt the Md5 hash
(deleting the row with the added contend didnt solve it....)
I tried a factory reste and an Temp Wipe in clockwork. I thought this should solve the problem but i l get the sam error ....
What should i do ?
Flash a facotory Image ?
How do i get back my root, if the factory image is my only option?
Thanks a lot for your help
greets Razzor
I also had the same problem then remembered that I use FullScreenToggle to get rid of the nav bar. I just had to re-enable it and it installed fine.
If you are getting the error on 'build.prop' look in the /System folder with Root Explorer or the ES explorer. If you see a build.prop.bak, that is probably your original file. Rename build.prop to something else and rename build.prop.bak to build.prop. Restart and then try taking the update again.
If you side-loaded the gnex browser so you could use flash, go to the /System/App folder and make sure you have BrowserProviderProxy.apk and BrowserProviderProxy.odex named properly. As stated earlier, rename browser.apk to browser.apk.bak. Restart and then try taking the update again. I had that problem. After getting the OTA installed, I renamed the browserproviderproxy files again, and made it browser bak file browser.apk. Now I have flash working perfectly again on the gnex stock browser.
Okay i managed to fix the browser proxy thing, turns out i had 10.apk at the end of it for some reason
and i renamed browser.apk to browser.apk.bak so that worked,
but now i got the same problem but with wallet

I remember having to jack around with Wallet to get the original update which allowed other credit/debit cards to be added. Some offered a solution where you could download a modified wallet.apk that would work instead of going through the other hoops. If you did that, the apk probably doesn't pass the verification. If you used a modified Wallet.apk did you backup the original one first?

build.prob error
Fixing steps for build.prob error :
VERY IMPORTANT: You will los all of your data, please make a backup befor you following this stepps ^^
Error Message apply_patch_check("/system/build.prob - "Numbers" , "Numbers")
My way which worked for me
1.)
The only way, if you dont have any backup of the original build prob file youl have to flash a copy of the factory IMAGE.
In my case i used the Nexus Toolkit 3.2 V - with this marvelous tool I copied the Factory Image 4.1.1 on it
2.)
After the factory Image you will lose your root. Install Clockwork or a other custom recovery image. Then its easy too get back your root with the Toolkit (follow the steps)
3.) If your not able to receve the OTA update to 4.1.2, download it and copy the ZIP to your Nexus 7
After this, go back to Fastboot and install the Updates using the up an down Volium buttons to navigate
Now the updating process should go very smooth

I have the same error when installing from CWM and the ONLY CHANGES I made to my N7 are:
- Unlock
- Root
- CWM
- Battery Icon
Any other ideas? Will installing from ADB and Android own Recovery will work?
EDIT: I tried the update on my SECOND N7, which have all the above EXCEPT the battery icon mod and it works. So looks like the battery icon mod is the issue! Anyone know how to revert back to the original battery icon?
Also, since the first update failed, when I clicked on "Check" under SYstem Update, now my N7 said the system is up to date. How do I force the update to run again?
The system checks are there for a reason and I am in no way responsible if anyone bricks their device with this but...
https://www.dropbox.com/s/isqpvb0w26kqjdx/4.1.2edited.zip
This is the update with the checks disabled. I didn't make this, got it off another forum, I just used it because I had moved an update to chrome into my /system and there was no easy way to revert it.
I wouldn't advise using this if you made build.prop modifications, but it is useful if your update is failing over some apps like google wallet.

you know how you can make the rom deodexed?
there wasnt a need for a new thread
i ll post the rooting method here again if this is main thread now
Easiest way to install the ROM achieve root and CWM recovery:
(make sure your battery is over 50%)
Download the firmware
extract the files and rename the tar.md5 files to .tar (remove the .md5 part)
Download Philz rooted kernel
Download Mobile Odin
copy all the files to your phone
Install mobile odin
open it and let it check for missing files
if u are using the free version u will need to download the flash kernel from chainfire's thread
In Mobile Odin:
go to Open file browse to the folder you copied files in and select the CODE_I9100XXLSJ file
go to Open file again and browse to CSC file do the same for the modem file
Now go to Open file and select Philz kernel
Select wipe data and dalvic cache to avoid running in any errors
this way mobile odin will flash this kernel rather than the stock non rooted kernel
Flash the firmware
your phone will reboot into mobile odin's special recovery and will flash the firmware
the phone will reboot some times just done worry leave it on table
After the phone boots pat your self on the back for doing a good job and thank Samsung for finally providing a good stock firmware since the gingerbread days

I'm still having problems with network lock. No software can unlock my phone while on JB. EFS Pro can restore unlocked version of my /efs but after a restart it all changes back (different md5sums of nv_data.bin files) - everything works fine on 4.0.4
I'm using PhilZ-cwm6-XXLSJ-OXX-3.1 kernel.
When on 4.0.4 EFSPro says that efs file type is "/EFS" but when on JB: "EXT4" and different permissions(-rwx------ on JB vs -rwxr-xr-x on 4.0.4)
adb remount doesn work.
Recovery backup of JB takes 16.5MB(boot.img and recovery.img take 8MB each), cache, data and system have .dup extension(funny thing is, I can still restore it and have fully working JB rom, wtf)
I tried to manually copy the nv_data.bin and changed its permissions and owner/group, still nothing. Any ideas what can be causing it?

About This ROM:
Hey guys, so Samsung has finally released JB 4.1.2 for the Bell Canada SGH-I757M, which is currently only available through the sammobile.com website and through Samsung KIES. The download zip contains a tar.md5 file and includes a 3e Recovery partition. That's bad news for those of you with a custom recovery. It will be overwritten and you'll have to go through flashing your custom recovery partition again.
So I bring you a Stock Flashable zip that won't replace your custom recovery. That way you can try the new stock rom without loosing root or your custom recovery.
The only credit I assume here is putting the zip package together which involved using @dsixda Kitchen (thanks dsixda). I also added root to this package so that you can have a fully rooted Stock Rom.

MODS
Extended Power Menu MOD
To apply the Extended Power Menu MOD, download the following zip to your sdcard as it needs to be flashed from CWM:
MOD_SGH-I757M_STOCK_JB_EXTENDED_POWER_MENU.zip (19.6MB)
1. First take a nandroid backup since we are modifying system files and can easily soft brick our phone by doing this.
2. Flash the MOD from CWM, and restart your phone.
Please be aware that the phone doesn't like to start up for the first time after you flash this mod, you will get stuck at the bootloader screen (not sure why). This is easily overcome by pressing and holding your power button for a hard reset (Hold it for about 10 to 15 seconds. You will feel it vibrate). It should then get past the boot screen. If that did not get you past the boot screen, restore your nandroid backup and try again. If the problem still persists. Post a message and I'll see if I can help you out
S-Voice (like apple's SIRI)
Here is a CWM flashable zip that will install the Galaxy S4's S-Voice onto your SGH-I757M. S-Voice is Samsung's SIRI clone. It seems to work fairly well so far. Just a little slow at times. Just download this zip to your sdcard, make a nandroid backup, and flash this zip. This will install S-Voice on your device. (It may force close on you a couple of times when you first open it up. Just keep opening it up until the force closes stop).
SGH-I757M-SVoice-MOD (62.4MB)
Thanks to @cabetoguerra for finding this leaked apk. Other files and libs were gathered by me and mostly found from a zip file created by xda member zoot1.
FAQ
Q. After I flash the Rom, I get FC's (force closes) like crazy, and I'm gonna pull my hair out!
A. If you did not expressly follow the instructions above, go back and read them. You must format the system, cache and data partitions manually in addition to the regular method.
If you did read and follow the instructions and are still getting FC's. Try the whole process over again and flash the Rom twice just to make sure it fully flashed and all the scripts ran successfully.
Thanks to @4runner10 for actually having to try this
Q. I'm on a Telus network and I get no data connection.
A. Check out this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1987678 for Telus APN settings as they differ from Bell APN settings.
Thanks to @rukusx7 for the tip

yeah, i always used to flash the rom twice but didn't bother this time. might want to mod the instructions! that did the trick, i also wiped the dalvik after the rom and modem were flashed. no idea if that would make a diff tho!
seems pretty smooth during setup!

I think it might have to do with the new partition and it's weird symlinks. I'll look into moving these files back into the /system/app folder. Hopefully that will help fix the fc's

[3/31] Fix for KitKat Update Failing - Without ROOTING

WARNING: IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO START FROM STEP 1 AND FOLLOW EACH STEP EXACTLY HOW I HAVE WROTE IT THEN YOU WILL FAIL. THIS METHOD WORKS IF YOU CAN FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS.
IF YOU DID NOT RESTORE YOUR PHONE AND FOLLOW EACH STEP EXACTLY HOW I LISTED BELOW THEN DO NOT SAY THIS DOESN'T WORK FOR YOU.
Step 1. Follow @evilpotatoman 's guide below to restore your phone to MJ5 FIRST
Guide:
1) Download and install Heimdall from here for windows. You'll need this and this to avoid missing .dll file errors
2) Download the following files:
MI9_fix.img.ext4
sec_csc.zip
2400258.zip
Put sec_csc.zip and 2400258.zip on your external SD card
3) Download and install the MJ5 partitions. Use Odin to flash these files (match the file names with the different upload slots)AP_N900AUCUBMJ5.zipBL_N900AUCUBMJ5.zipCP_N900AUCUBMJ5.zipHLTE_USA_ATT_32G.pit
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
4) Now is the time to use Heimdall.
Reboot into Download Mode once Odin finishes.
Install the vcredist packages downloaded from step 1.
unzip the heimdall .zip file to c:/
go to c:/Heimdall Suite/Drivers and click on zadig.exe
click the middle menu button to select "Show All Devices"
from the dropdown, select MSM8960
click the "install driver" button.
you should see a success message
5) Navigate on your computer to c:/Heimdall Suite/ and open heimdall-frontend.exe.
IMPORTANT -- Go to the Utilities tab and click the "Detect" button
Go to the Flash tab on Heimdall, click Browse and select the HLTE_USA_ATT_32G.pit file downloaded from step 3
Click the 'add' button, then next to 'partition name' select system from the dropdown.
click the Browse button underneath the dropdown, and select the MI9_fix.img.ext4 image you downloaded from step 2.
6) Click Start. ***I usually check the 'No Reboot' box to prepare for booting into recovery
7) Heimdall and your Note will report a bad flash at around 95% -- but don't worry -- your system.img got uploaded Reboot directly into recovery mode.
8) Once in recovery, select "Choose update from external" in the recovery, and select the sec_csc.zip you downloaded earlier (did you remember to put that file on your external SD card?). This will install the CSC files and run the preload checkin so you don't FC all over the place
9) IMPORTANT--After flashing the sec_csc, the Note will reboot.
Try to catch it in time to reboot BACK into recovery
Once in recovery, select "Choose update from external" in the recovery, and select the 2400258.zip you downloaded earlier.
END OF MJ5 RESTORE GUIDE - CONTINUE BELOW
Step 2. YOU ARE NOW ON MJ5 BE SURE TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THE NB4 OTA UPDATE BEFORE CONTINUING!!!
Step 3. When you're finished the restore guide to MJ5 and updated to NB4 then delete any other files used from the restore guide so you don't mix them up and download the following 2 files:
1- Miata KitKat Fix v1
2- KitKat Ota ZipStep 4. Extract the Miata_KK_Fix_1.0.zip to the root of your BOTH your phone storage and your sd card. (make sure they are not in any folders!!!)
Step 5. Once both files in the Miata_KK_Fix_1.0.zip are extracted and copied to both your phone and the sd card... then reboot the phone.
VERY IMPORTANT TO REBOOT NOW
Step 6. Pick one of the follow options...
(Option A) - Wipes phone - I recommend this method
1. Rename 2400258.zip to update.zip and copy to EXTERNAL STORAGE (aka sd card)
UNPLUG USB CABLE BEFORE CONTINUING
2. Reboot into RECOVERY MODE (volume up + home) and select "Apply Update from external storage" and select your update.zip
3. It should start the update process and finish successfully! Enjoy!
If you made it this far and it fails or gives you an error then you did something wrong. Start from step 1 restoring your phone to MJ5
(Option B) - Doesn't wipe phone
1. You are going to need an ADB Side loader and it can be found here.
2. Extract to directory C:\Mini-SDK
3. Rename 2400258.zip to update. (DO NOT NAME UPDATE.ZIP, JUST "update".)
4. Place "UPDATE" into the same folder as your ADB C:\Mini-SDK
5. Hold shift and right click in the folder to "Open command window here"
6. Reboot your phone into RECOVERY MODE (volume up + home)
7. Select "Apply update from ADB"
8. Plug phone into usb on PC
9. In your command window type "adb sideload update" without quotes and enjoy!
If you made it this far and it fails or gives you an error then you did something wrong. Start from step 1 restoring your phone to MJ5
(Option C) - Untested
1. Settings, General, About, Software Update, Check for updates...
2. Download and install update
If you made it this far and it fails or gives you an error then you did something wrong. Start from step 1 restoring your phone to MJ5
Thanks @opsmgr3774 for the donation!
Thanks @Ciberious42 and @evilpotatoman and anyone else I forgot.
Q&A
1. Is this safe?
Yes it's using the same exploit from Root De La Vega to run a script that replaces the bad file that is stopping the OTA from installing.
What the script does:
Code:
mount -o rw,remount /system
rm /system/bin/mobicore-presetup.sh
cp /sdcard/mobicore-presetup.sh /system/bin
rm /sdcard/rldv.sh
2. It doesn't work for me!!!
Try it again from the very beginning and read step by step, slowly. Make sure you didn't miss anything! Download the files again also.

Im sure people would be a little more willing to try this is there was a little more info here.
What are these files fixing when flashed, how do i know that these good/ok files to flash that will not brick my device? Because you said it should work. Not nit picking or even saying that it doesnt work. BUT more info on what this is would be beneficial to everyone.

Well you're not flashing anything that isn't safe considering they're all the same files from different threads (that are safe) except for the script file in the miata fix zip that I made.

It can't harm anything do not worry. If you followed this guide exactly it will work. Worst case scenario is that you will have to start over again. All it does is copy the missing file back onto the phone so it no longer fails at 27% it's a simple 3 line script you can open it in notepad and see what it's doing if you like.
I hope that posting this is not bad form, as I don't mean to sound skeptical of the OP....
Has anyone tried this method and had success?

Thank you. I had done everything but the nb4 update and it failed so I of course panicked, then noticed TheChefSLC said they "ran" the script and wondered if I had missed a step. It's all squared away and fully updated now. It worked. Hooray.

Now to wait for root...

[ROOT][ROM] Marshmallow GPE (wp_mod) (s2s_mod) (All variants)

Marshmallow root has been much more difficult than simply flash a zip in recovery, because it also requires a modified boot image to work.
I've done all the work for you, this root is achieved with SELinux enforced using Chainfire's method.
The original RUU/Stock rom is here.
In this post you can find the followings:
Aroma Stock Rom
Root Info
GPE Marshmallow on All Models
Disable S-ON System Write Protection

FAQ
Aroma Stock Rom (All models support with selectable root)
Simplest way to dive in GPE Marshmallow, the installer will guide you to the right direction.
If you want root, take a look at the next section for some info about root methods.
Choose your model in the installer, it also includes proper support for Sprint and Verizon device,
This will NOT convert your device into GPE!! It only flashes a rom.
Aroma Version Stock GPE
Mega Link

Important!! If you choose systemless root, please choose "Do not install SuperSU" when reboot in TWRP, because TWRP isn't updated to detect this new method. If you choose to install SuperSU within TWRP you'll get stuck in boot loop.
Root Info
In Marshmallow, Chainfire gave us with two rooting methods include:
The traditional root in system, which breaks OTA functionality.
(It's more stable now)
New "systemless" approach, which means the root stuffs are only in DATA and BOOT, the system will stay intact and it will accept OTAs.
(Note that this method is still in beta stage according to CF)
If you already downloaded the GPE Marshmallow stock rom and you want root, this is where you'd be interested with.
(Non-GSM device should now jump to next section)
Choose your preferred root method above, and follow the correspond instructions below.
Instructions:
Traditional:
Flash m8-mmgpe-su-boot.zip in attachment with TWRP
Flash SuperSU 2.52
Systemless:
Be sure you haven't used any other root method(like the traditional one above), if you've rooted with other methods, please re-flash your system back to pure stock
Flash m8-mmgpe-su-boot-systemless.zip in attachment with TWRP
Download SuperSU-v2.56-20151030013730.zip in this thread, and flash it through TWRP
Important!! Please choose "Do not install SuperSU" when reboot in TWRP, because TWRP isn't updated to detect this new method. If you choose to install SuperSU within TWRP you'll get stuck in bootloop.
GPE Marshmallow on All Models
Not an International/GSM device and still want some Marshmallow love? This is where you'd be interested with.
Simplest way is flash the pre-packed rom above, but if you already downloaded the stock rom and don't want to re-download, then look below.
GPE MM on all models is possible because it uses the Sense all-model dtb image, thanks to sun_dream for his work!!
Choose your preferred root method above, and follow the correspond instructions below.
Instructions:
Traditional:
Flash m8_AIO-mmgpe-su-boot.zip in attachment with TWRP
Flash SuperSU 2.52
Systemless:
Be sure you haven't used any other root method(like the traditional one above), if you've rooted with other methods, please re-flash your system back to pure stock
Flash m8_AIO-mmgpe-su-boot-systemless.zip in attachment with TWRP
Download SuperSU-v2.56-20151030013730.zip in this thread, and flash it through TWRP
Important!! Please choose "Do not install SuperSU" when reboot in TWRP, because TWRP isn't updated to detect this new method. If you choose to install SuperSU within TWRP you'll get stuck in bootloop.
Disable S-ON System Write Protection
After you rooted, you might find out that your system partition is locked up, this is because of HTC's system write protection on S-ON devices, and here is a handy mod for you to bypass it. Original mod by flar2, I modified it to work on MM GPE.
Instructions:
You have to use the traditional root method above to make this work!!
Flash m8-mmgpe-wp_mod.zip in attachment
Sweep to Sleep module
A handy mod to turn of the screen by swiping the bottom of the screen. Original mod by flar2, I modified it to work on MM GPE.
Instructions:
This will flash files to system, there is no point in using systemless method, it ot should be OK
Flash m8-mmgpe-s2s_mod.zip in attachment
FAQ
Q: After choosing full wipe, my contents in internal storage are all gone!!
A: No, it's not. It's a new behavior of Marshmallow. After each clean flash, it will move all previous files in /sdcard into /sdcard/0. You can just move them back to the proper locations.
Q: I cannot install Busybox in system / I cannot use adaway !!
A: Flash wp_mod.
Q: I used systemless root and wanted to keep my system partition intact, how do I install Busybox?
A: Download Busybox Pro, type /su/bin as the installation path for busybox. You cannot do it using the free version, unfortunately.
Q: **** app cannot access external SDcard!!
A: Look at this explanation:
Since Kitkat(2 years ago man), we don't have direct external storage write permission. Google consider it insecure, so they implemented this feature. The reason why you can access external SDcard easily before is because most roms on XDA already contains a hack in /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml. You should not rely on this hack forever, please take a look below.
In lollipop and after, Google provided a much secure and better way to grant external storage access to third party apps, first of all take a look at this article for details:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/1...s-automatic-mediastore-and-improves-security/
So instead of using the old platform.xml hack in the old Kitkat days, adopt yourself with this new behavior of Android!! If a certain app cannot access SDcard, ASK THE DEVELOPER to add support for this API!!
Many apps already have support for this API. I'll take Titanium Backup for example, as lots of you cannot find the way to use it on externals SD. In Menu>>Preferences>>Backup Location, you can choose Document Provider on top of the detect button.
In the provider, open the menu on the top right corner and select "Show SDcard", then you'll see External Storage in the left side. Select external SDcard in the document provider and press the button on the bottom, the app will then be granted access to the whole external storage. You can then create a new folder in TiBack and select it as your backup location.
Other apps also follows the instructions above, you just have to manually set up the folder where the app can access, in the case which most of us would love to give access to the whole SDcard, I set the location to the root of external storage. Each app has independent permission, so you have to manually grant each app you wish to access external storage.
Q: I want OTA, what should I do?
A: Look at the following info
To accept OTA updates, you need the following:
Your MID should be 0P6B17000
Your CID should be GOOGL001
You have to fully convert to GPE
You have to keep system partition untouched
You have to have GPE stock recovery
So before anything, if you want to accept OTA, you have to change MID, CID, and convert to GPE. The tricky part is the system partition and the recovery. The easiest way is when the OTA comes, flash the stock rom again without root, flash GPE stock recovery through fastboot, then apply OTA. But if you like to go the hardcore way, here comes a tutorial:
fastboot flash systemless_boot.img
fastboot boot TWRP.img(so that you can use TWRP but you didn't actually flash it)
Flash systemless SuperSU
By doing so you can accept OTA at anytime.
Q: Are there any mods around?
A: Because of the difficulty of file based flashing, modded GPE MM might take a while to appear.
You can use Xposed Framework, as it now officially support Marshmallow.

Try copy a random file to system (or remove an system app you don't like) using root explorer and reboot and see if it sticks. I haven't used v4a for years, and I'm not sure if it is something about selinux or other possible reasons.
Also I'm not sure if the su.d script is executing correctly(because stock rom lack init.d support I tried su.d), try this also:
First reboot the device, before doing any modifications to system open terminal on the phone and type:
su
insmod /system/lib/modules/wp_mod.ko
then do the system modification tests.
Thanks a lot!!

Thanks for the confirmation.
Doing thing blindly without testing is always a challenge
I am loosing htc gestures like double tap to wake after sometime
Have to disable and then re enable it to get it working
Just posting to say that the Systemless Root method worked great for me. Able to successfully modify /System files and folders (verified changes were still there after reboot), restored some apps, Messages, and Call Log using Titanium, and Android Pay is still working after rooting.
Thanks JW!
Is there any way to flash TWRP without PC if you don't have root...??
Well, whatever I try, V4A keeps asking for drivers. I have selinux permissive (selinux mode changer app) and flashed the wp_mod from here. Adaway and other changes to the system partition stick. Any ideas?
Updated post with pre-rooted with aroma installer rom.
