Problem with large data usage on CM 11 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I'm using Cyanogenmod 11 on my Nexus 4 since February. Currently I have snapshot M5 (I'm updating the soft every month via Cyanogenmod updates in Settings menu). I have 200 MB of internet data every month, which to me is enough, because I use it very occasionally, mainly to read e-mails, weather updates, send hangouts messages or occasionally check something on the internet. When I use 200 MB I still have internet, but very very slow. During the first months the data usage fluctuated around 60MB, which is similar to the data usage I had for over 3 years on my previous smartphone. I also did not have any problems with baterry drain.
Last month I noticed that I used 200MB after two weeks. I thought - ok, I used some internet so it could happen. But this month situation was the same and I rarely used internet. My internet data ended around May, 18. I checked Data Usage in Settings and it showed me that to the date of this post I used 419 mb (last month it was 276 MB) and the month is not over yet. 373 MB was used by Android OS, Firefox 12 MB, Email 8 MB and some other apps used around 1-4 MB. Yesterday I installed My Data Manager app by Mobidia to see precisely what app consumed my data. From 8 AM to 1 PM the phone used 18 MB. 73,3 % was used by something called Manager (with Android icon) and 20,5% was used by OS Services.
My Google Play apps updates only via wi-fi. My phone is always conected to my wi-fi from 6 PM to 8 AM, and almost all the time on Saturday and Sunday. I also noticed that when my phone is fully charged and connected to wi-fi, it lasts 2-3 days of normal using without charging, My record was 5 days. But when I'm disconnected from wi-fi, the phone asks for a charger after a 5-6 hours and the back of the phone is warm, sometimes hot. My signal strengh has all bars and my network type is HSDPA+.
Can anyone tell me what is causing this data used and my general problems, and how to solve it? My habits has not change, my aps has not changed, but the internet data usage and battery drain increased dramatically.
P.S. Factory Reset or changing the soft is a last restort.

Android OS is stuck at looking for something on the internet. A dirty flash of your ROM should solve the issue.

abaaaabbbb63, problem has been resolved. The problem was active Google Backup in Settings. It generates large data traffic. No re-flashing needed.

Thank you!
I'll keep this in mind from when it will happen in the future.

High data usage

Anyone else experiencing high data usage on the x10? I installed netcounter 4 days ago and it says I've used over 45mb. I consider myself to be a light user, no timescape update, no email/weather apps. Auto update switched off etc. I will browse the web and use facebook for say 20-30 minutes a day, check out the store and thats about it.
The phone seems to be accessing the internet on a regular basis, if I have the phone near my alarm speaker I can hear a lot of interference. Its like it is constantly accessing my data connection.
I'm not too worried about costs as I have 500mb per month, but it does seem unusually high. I'm sure this is draining the battery as well Any ideas?
Have you got "location services" switched on? that will use the network.
Data usage does seem to be very high when compared to other phones, last month I clocked up 650MB+ (on a 500MB bundle) even though I was mostly using WiFi. Just had to bump up my data package to unlimited as the extra 150MB cost me nearly £20.
I think you have some programs or widgets which have automatic update.
Is something with X10 or android in general.
I opened a thread like this sometime ago but nobody knows anything.
My experience:
Factory default, nothing configured (twitter, facebook, email, etc), background sync disabled, gps disabled, etc and i had like 12Mb/day day without doing anything.

Focus/WP7 is Data Hog!

I was finally able to get an update on my data use since launch day, Nov 8th. I connected to the net via AT&T 3G for the first time at 10:48am Nov 8th, AT&T's last update for me is at until 12:07am Nov 10th, I've used.... Ar you ready for this.. 614.69 MB Data in the first 37.75 hours I have owned the Focus, my first smartphone btw.

There's gotta be something wrong on their end. I've had that phone for almost exactly the same amount of time and am at 64MB for my current cycle. Fortunately I'm grandfathered in with the old unlimited plan...
Have you called tech support?
How many apps did you download? I know that really large apps for wifi/usb for download, but I had some large spikes on my 3G also.
I'm keeping an eye on it too, but it was roughly around when I started downloading a bunch of apps on the marketplace
Something is up for sure. After Id been asleep for about an hour on the 10th, my phone sent ~47.5MB of data.

My phone was plugged into the wall charger on night stand next to bed. I was out cold by 11PM on the 9th. Hmm.. I notice all data usage displayed on my account page with AT&T shows only 'sent' data, not received. Is that normal? Should it show sent and received?
Nov 8th, my original set up was at home, using Zune to ad apps, music, videos, etc. Got to work and powered down, plugged into wall to charge, phone popped back on automatically and everything was gone. So I downloaded the apps I wanted to tinker with the most over the air.
Nov 9th, I plugged my phone in when I got to work, I streamed Zune and Last.FM music for most of the day (~5-6 hours). Left phone unplugged from wall to test battery. I used the maps traffic and location service. I have all location services active. I have 4 email accounts linked. Two to send new emails as they are received, one every hour, and one manually. I have xbox live on. I surfed the web a few minutes at a time for maybe 1 hour total browsing with the other 3 hours during work. I also watched the movie "UP" via Netflix/3G (1-2 Bars, which quality was perfect after about 3 minutes). Showed the daughter how to use the maps, search. I also have my pics to auto sink to Sky Drive; but I only took about 5 pics total first two days. I also have record phone location, and find phone location faster checked.
640MB is believable with the usage you say. Lets say you are streaming 5 hrs of music at 64kbps. This will add up to 144MB in music streaming alone. This is not to mention 1.5 hrs of "UP" at a much higher bit rate.

Very frequent data upload, please help

Hello,
I got a Samsung Galaxy SII I-9100, stock rom, no modification, and no rom update since I bought it.
Since this week-end, I see very frequent data uploads (green up arrow lights up, and network mode changes from 3G to H+). It happens every few seconds/minutes and stays for several seconds or minutes.
Because of that, my phone battery lasts less than a day instead of 2 full days and nights, and it probably also eats my data plans.
I uninstalled all the applications I downloaded, restarted the phone many times, disabled background data and auto-sync, with no success.
I've installed Radioopt Traffic Monitor, I can see the data being uploaded (around 50 KB in 6 hours), but according to the app, it's not send by any application.
The only work around is to long press the power button and disable "Data network mode". But still, I would like to use data and auto-sync without killing the battery (as I was doing before).
Any idea? I heard it might be related to the network itself. I'm on Vodafone Ireland. Might it be anything I installed?
Thanks for your help.
All your apps any apps .
Apps are set to download/update 24 hours a day .
Check each app and turn off its data connection or use an app like Quick Settings to turn mobile data on/off ,
jje
In my opinion 50kb in 6 hours aint high at all..

Hey,
I've found the answer, it might help somebody else in the same case:
I'm on a prepay contract and I had no credit, so I guess the phone was trying to connect to the APN, and the connection was refused, and it was doing this in a loop. After topping up, the problem disappeared.
Cheers
Same problem with my SGS2 but my phone is not sending 50 KB in 6 hours...but rather 200 MB in 5 hours !
I'm not on a prepaid contract, though.
here is a screenshot of the process sending all those data, if anybody can help me...

[Q][SOLVED] Using Internet in background.

Some app or the android system is using my internet connection in background. Even sometimes it is turning on the WiFi itself even if I turn it off. I have a 512Kbps(It's the highest available for regular uses around here) data connection, and it's using the full bandwidth. So it gets hard to do anything on the internet during that time.
So how do I find out how or by which app the data is being used? And what can possibly turn on the WiFi automatically. I've got more than 150apps installed so it's not possible for me to check the problem by uninstalling them one by one.
Edit: It's not happening all the time. I'm facing this problem since 3-4days.
Thanks in advance.

My bet is Facebook. Just an awfully made app. Granted, this was several months ago, but my wife had it....her data plan was only 100mb. At the end of the month her bill was almost double. Put a traffic monitoring app on her phone and discovered Facebook was using 30mb or so per day, even when she barely touched it.
Now she just goes on Facebook through her browser.

Thanks.
But it was not Facebook. I don't have the app installed. I hate the app as it is too much research hungry.
I found out it was YouTube. I had Preload Watch Later ticked. It used 523MB of data in just 2days. But I had only one Video in Watch later list. I tried to play the Video when I figured what was the matter, and it was still loading. So I don't know what YouTube app means by "Preload Watch Later".
BTW thank for the help.

Insane data usage - verizon

Has anyone else had really high data usage lately? I have not changed a thing about my phone and Verizon claims I have used 6gb per month for the last two months. Usually I use under 2gb.
They say it's my usage, not their system.I am on wifi about 90% of the day. Any apps that may be causing high usage and I don't know it?

This same thing just happened to me...within the first week of my new billing cycle i got a text showing that i had used all of my data which is 5gb....i know that this was impossible because i had only had my data on a hand full of times because i always use wifi...I had even had data completely turned off in settings...wtf vzw
2 options, 1. check for rogue apps that is sending off data 2. sell the phone and go tmobile for unlimited. I opt for the second option

Looked into the second option, horrible coverage in my area.
First option - How do I check for that?
use apps like wake lock detector but even that you have to know android system real well to define which process that is sending off data. another thing to check is market, make sure its only on "update when on wifi"

Well, did you figure it out? I can't. I called Verizon and they LITERALLY told me that having WiFi meant nothing being turned on and that apps go around wifi to use mobile data. I lol'd and hung up.
Lmao.... some do... anyway, settings mobile data will be decently accurate for mobile and Wi-Fi use if you have no data monitoring apps.
