The Welcome to KitKat Guide [Q&A's] - Xperia Tablet Z General

UPDATING
Q: How should I update my Phone? (To Android 4.4.2)
A: If you're updating via Update Service or PC Companion, do a fresh install (literally, I mean. FACTORY RESET) .
Q: I just flashed my phone and now it's full of lag.
A: Step 1: Debloat Firmware, Step 2: Do a factory reset, Step 3: Force GPU Rendering in Dev. Options, Step 4: Restart your Phone.
AFTER UPDATE
Q: My battery drains by Google Play Services (GMS) what can I do?
A1: Disable Google Location Services in Settings > Locations (You can do this when you boot up your Phone for the first time after update too.)
A2: Update GMS (Latest version is: 4.4.52): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.gms
Q: I can't write to my external SD Card. F U SONY. - (This isn't by Sony, Google decided to slowly kill MicroSD support on Android :silly
A: If you're rooted use this fix: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix
Q: After updating many of my Apps are FC'ing (May happen if you didn't do a clean install)
A: Do a fresh install with a factory reset.
Q: My battery drains so quickly, 4.3 is much better.
A: Do a fresh install with a factory reset, I have been using KitKat since launch day and my battery easily lasts 2 days using the phone on a daily routine.
Q: My phone lags on the HomeScreen.
A: This may be caused by the new Xperia Live Wallpaper, if you change the wallpaper for a fixed one it should solve the problem. Plus, you can keep the LW as Lockscreen Wallpaper. Looks Good, Feels Good.

Issues after upgrade to 2.3.3 and reset to factory defaults

hi,
after upgrading to 2.3.3 (GT-I9000HKDDBT --> PDA:JVI / PHONE:JVO / CSC:JV2) via Kies and doing a data wipe i had the following issues:
1. no sync icon when email accounts a sycning
2. android market apps is at version 2.3.4 and is not updating to 2.3.6
3. unable to delete android market apps data. button is greyed out
4. unable to find samsung apps again for download (accuweather clock widget, asphalt 5, etc.)
can anyone confirm these issues or post solutions to fix them?
thanks,
mom20xx
hi,
I updated yesterday, but didnt do a factory reset.
1. never have seen that. you mean sync icon for standard email or for googlemail?
2. mine updated to 2.3.6, maybe just wait a few days, i had a similar problem in earlier releases. it'll update in the next time i think.
3. not
4. samsung apps updated and still there...
but what interests me: do you have the scrolling bug in the built-in browser?
1. standard email but it seems to work now.
2. is ok now after enabling google backup (einstellungen -datenschutz - meine daten sichern + automatisch wiederherstellen)
3. is working now with market 2.3.6
4. get the accuweather clock now. the rest I'm not using
In my eyes I have no scrolling bug in the built-in browser. it is working as expected.
how about daily briefing? did you still have it?
no do not have daily briefing. i even do not use it. maybe the download ist available via samsung apps
Hey even i couldnt find the Daily briefing... if anyone has the app pls share...
daily briefing seems to be gone umm... never used that, but dont really understand why they removed it ^^
is anybody else recognizing the scroll bug in the built-in browser AFTER factory reset (on stock rom)?
i dont really want to reset and again lose all settings, apps etc..

What's not working
- Nothing that I know of, let me know if you find one
Code:
This Rom has been tested by me several times on
my I9295 individually before release.
However I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards,
or you getting fired because the alarm app failed.
YOU choose to make these modifications to your phone.
TIPS
The aim of this ROM is to keep it as close to the stock firmware and light as possible. Because this way the ROM is the most stable you can get, and also you don't have any apps that run in the background that can have an influence on the performance and/or battery life of the ROM.
.
See Post #2 for the Aroma Add-on Package, so that you can choose which Samsung Apps / functions you want back.
You can use this Aroma add-on package at any time (multiple times) after flashing this rom (So you can first use the rom bare-bone and look for yourself which app/feature you want to have back). DO NOT install apps that you do not use to save battery and improve performance
.
The 3 Animation settings have been defaulted in the ROM to 0.5 for much faster animations (and experience). In case you would like to change them you can do so as below:
- Enable the Developer Options (Settings -> About Device -> 8x tap the Build number)
- Go to the Developer Options (Settings -> Developer options)
- Scroll down, and change, Window animation scale, Transition animation scale & Animator duration scale to your preference
.
Restrict performance is enabled by default in power saving mode. For a faster experience & allshare to work disable it by
- Go to Settings-->Power Saving-->Power saving mode -->Turn it on
- Tap on Restrict performance-->turn it off
- Go back to power saving mode-->turn it off
.
All apps available on Google Play Store are NOT included in the ROM (or Aroma add-on package), you can download those by yourself in the Play Store.
.
Do not restore apps from older android version through titanium backup, install the apps from Play Store (so the version of apps installed are compatible with the ROM version of android) and only use Titanium backup to restore the app data.
.
I am not much of a fan of the Xposed Framework plugins and prefer to have these directly in the ROM and in case you think of any features you can send your suggestions with complete details so that I can look into it.

Requirements
1. works with 4.4.2 bootloader / firmware or OB4
2. Flash the OB4 modems (You can also flash OC3 / OD3 modems from my drive along with the respective kernel all available on my drive)
3. CWM 6.0.5.1 and above (previous versions are not compatible with android 5.0.1) - I have tested with Philz recovery

Installation
Check your bootloader and modems, you may have to update to the latest one for your device (below XXXXNE5 - KitKat will have issues)
Backup your device, in case you want to revert back.
Delete all folders starting with a period ('.') along with the android folder on your internal sdcard (This is a must if upgrading from a kitkat or non TW ROM, these are files created by android system that can cause issues)
Factory reset (If using PhilZ recovery do not use 'Clean to Install a New ROM) Absolutely required as this is a S6 port
Flash the ROM
Reboot
If coming from any other ROM, select 'Setup as new device' and also unselect backup/restore app data while setting up the ROM. You can use Super Backup from playstore to backup & restore call log, contacts & SMS. Once the ROM is setup you can enable backup/restore.

Downloaded OK and flashed successfully according to CWM but only getting a blank screen on boot?? Not sure if it's because I was PacRom prior? I'll try reverting to stock TW via Odin and then reflashing to see what happens....

I have flashed this on my device at least a couple of times and have not encountered any issues.
Is you device I9295? as I am not aware of PacRom for S4 active international and have you flashed firmware for 4.4.2 on your phone before.
Edit: Just flashed once again and it booted without any issues. First boot takes about a minute and a half to two minutes
Yes its I9295. I've had various 4.4.4 firmwares running perfectly for a while. I've not flashed 4.4.2 TW Firmware before, because it wasn't available - but just found that a stock one is now available for the UK, so downloading that - I'll try flashing that through Odin first and then try this again.
Cheers

Great!!!
Yes that would be the issue, this is based on Netherlands 4.4.2 firmware that was released in April and it is working fine without any issues around the globe
Wifi problem
I don't have any problem to install this ROM but Wifi don't work. It will not turn on. Is there any fix for that?
Did you flash the ROM? Wifi is working fine here without any issues... look at the screenshots

What firmware are you on..could be an issue with the modem.. can you flash the netherlands firmware (link below) reboot, flash recovery and then try
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0ByY8uLVuRKD2NDZYYVBaamlrMkk/edit?usp=docslist_api
Edit: Alternatively if you do not want to flash entire firmware you can flash just the UCNE5 modem. You can get the link for the modem at post #693 at the below link and flashing instructions at post # 696

Hello. Installed over stocky rom. Style looks super (colours, etc), wifi also works. Will report later.
Sent from my GT-I9295 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Hmm, well I finally have it up and running!
Odd though - I flashed the UK 4.4.2 firmware and then this and got the same issue - black screen on bootup. Tried all sorts of things, but nothing worked. I flashed the downloaded NL firmware and then this and bingo - maybe something to do with the LTE modem or phone that's different between NL and UK?? Do they have the same LTE bands - not had a chance to try the download speeds yet.
WiFi seems to work fine. It was doing weird things for a while when charging - every 10 seconds or so it would react as though the cable was unplugged and then plugged back in - with the pop up about waterproof plug etc. That may be related to the non-OEM battery though so I'll wait and see on that.
I'll try it out properly tomorrow and report back.
Thanks again though! Looks promising....

Ok thanks, I will update the info in the OP
Very nice rom but I have problems with root access. (I wiped cache and data before installing the rom) SuperSU is installed right but when I install apps which need root access for example titanium backup and try to launch the app the root access pop-up wont come up and the app freezes.. Everything else works fine!

Hmm.. did you do a factory reset? Su binary is installed and does pop up on root access requests. I have installed the ROM several times and did not have this issue. Can you try with factory reset and opening file explorer and selecting root explorer in settings and see if it pops up.
Wonder if anyone else has this issue

I would recommend that you restart the phone once and check with File Explorer as well. In case the problem persists then you can download SuperSu from http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu and flash through CWM.

[GAPPS] Debloating Scripts for AOSP ROMs

AOSP Marshmallow & Nougat Deloating Flashables
Description
Debloating Scripts for AOSP Marshmallow & Nougat.
Disclaimer
I am not responsible for anything that happens to your device. By downloading and flashing or installing these zips, you automatically agree that I won't be held liable for anything that happens to your phone.
Background
I've created some flashable scripts to remove unwanted applications ('debloat') from AOSP-based Marshmallow and Nougat Nexus 5 ROMS.
These scripts, when installed, should minimize redundant versions of similar applications that arise when installing Google Applications (GApps) on custom AOSP ROMS.
THERE IS NO NEED TO RUN THESE SCRIPTS ON FACTORY ROMS! Factory ROMs from Google come pre-installed with GApps
THE REMOVAL PROCESS IS PERMANENT! When you run these scripts, the listed applications and their folders are deleted. If you inadvertently delete an app that you actually wanted to keep, you'll have to manually reinstall it from your custom ROM image, or reinstall the ROM.
Installation
PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS IF YOU HAVE THEM!
BEFORE attempting to run these scripts, download, install, and configure the replacement applications FIRST, then run the scripts.
An Example: if you remove the AOSP Keyboard (LatinIME) before installing the Google Keyboard, you won't be able to search for items in the Play Store, as you'll have no way of inputting text.
Your GApps provider may have specific instructions on installing certain applications. Please thoroughly read the documentation and notes your GApps "flavor" provides.
These debloating scripts are provided in a "flashable" ZIP archive. Copy the file to the storage/sdcard area of your phone, reboot to recovery (TWRP), "Install" the script, then reboot.
GOOD LUCK!
Marshmallow & Nougat Mayhem Debloater - DOWNLOAD - Removes AOSP apps with PlayStore-downloadable alternatives from Google & THE AOSP LAUNCHER:
----
Removes everything listed under "Maximum" below, PLUS AOSP Launcher3. From a request by @sidlogsin.
Marshmallow & Nougat Maximum Debloater - DOWNLOAD - Removes AOSP apps with PlayStore-downloadable alternatives from Google:
----
NOTE 1: On the Nexus 5, running Nougat:
Google Camera is not available from the PlayStore in some countries using this Play Store Link.
Google Camera - creates/throws green video alternating frames; photos are fine.
AOSP Camera and Footej - take good photos, but have no HDR+ support; some users report jitters on the left side of the screen in recorded videos.
OpenCamera - takes good photos, supports HDR+; some users report jitters on the left side of the screen in recorded videos.
At this time OpenCamera is highly recommended.
NOTE 2: For Nougat, per DeltaDroid in this POST, the following PlayStore GApps (AND ONLY THESE GAPPS FROM THE LIST BELOW) can still be flashed to /system:
Calculator
Calendar
Calendar Sync Adapter
Clock
Cloud Print
Gmail
Keep
News & Weather
Phone
Play Books
Play Music
Play Newsstand

Minimal GApps install on Marshmallow 6.0.0/6.0.1 on "unpatched" AOSP ROMs
I've had this tucked-away for a while on an odd thread. I'll post it here for now.
I'm a big fan of DeltaDroid's GApps. His work is highly modular; his focus is on a small, basic package with the ability to flash individual added components. Truly a fantastic thread and a great GApps developer.
NOTE: This same procedure will probably work for 7.0 Nougat; you'll have to download the Nougat package, of course!
I'll give an overview of my install procedure for Untouched AOSP on my Nexus 5, then I'll follow with the DeltaGApps install procedure.
General ROM & GApps Install Procedure:
--------
- Flashed MOB31E factory ROM via PC
- Installed TWRP via adb
- Created empty text files as per directions HERE
- Copied ROM, empty text files, and install items to phone from PC
- Booted to recovery (TWRP), rebooted from within TWRP to recovery (TWRP)
- Wiped everything but internal storage
- Installed ZIPs: ROM, TimeService, bootanimation
- Rebooted to system (Android)
- Setup APN and WiFi
- Rebooted to recovery (TWRP)
- Flashed Delta GApps MM base package using this PROCEDURE
- Rebooted to system (Android)
- Fixed Google Contacts Sunc, Google Play Services, and PlayStore permisions using this PROCEDURE
- Added google accout via Settings -> Accounts
- Rebooted to system (Android)
For a Minimal GApps install on Marshmallow 6.0.0/6.0.1 on "unpatched" AOSP ROMs:
--------
1. Download Deltadroid's Marshmallow Base Gapps package for 6.0.0 or 6.0.1 (From THIS GApps thread):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=58047099&postcount=1 (Post #1)
(There are packages for 6.0.0 and 6.0.1 - all the way down, towards the bottom, "Marshmallow Base Gapps Package:").
2. Create and install these empty text files (0-byte) on the "root" of your Internal Storage (Ex: "/sdcard/" or "/storage/emulated/0"):
(NOTE: The end of this post has a mini walk-thru for creating these empty text files using Notepad on a PC and TurboEditor on Android)
/sdcard/.removefacelock
(prevents Google Facelock from being installed and removes existing installation of Facelock)
/sdcard/.removesetupwizard
(keeps the "stock provision" Setup Wizard and does not replace it with Google's Setup Wizard)
3. Install GApps via TWRP
4. Boot to System (Yes, you'll probably get Play Services "FC" messages until you perform #5 below)
5. Immediately toggle application permissions to "ON" under:
Settings -> Apps -> ... -> System show
For:
- Google Contacts Sync
- Google Play Services
- Google Play Store
- Contacts (I had to add permission for SMS on AOSP MOB31E)
6. Reboot the phone
7. Add your Google Account via "Settings -> Accounts -> Add account -> Google"
8. Verify that Contacts are synced and Play Services is functional.
9. Enjoy!
Walk-through for creating empy "zero-byte" text files:
--------
On Windows, use Notepad or the text editor of your choice:
1. Select "New file".
2. Without typing any text, press "Save as".
3. Under "Name", type ".removefacelock" (without the quotes, with the preceding period, and without the .txt extension)
4. Press OK.
5. repeat steps 1 and 2.
6. Under "Name", type ".removesetupwizard" (without the quotes, with the preceding period, and without the .txt extension)
7. Press OK.
8. Copy both files from Windows to "/storage/emulated/0" or "/sdcard" on Android.
On Android, using Turbo Editor for illustrative purposes (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.maskyn.fileeditor&hl=en or https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=com.maskyn.fileeditorpro):
1. Download and install a text editor on Android.
2. Open the text editor.
3. Select "New file".
4. Without typing any text, press the three dots in the upper right corner.
5. Press "Save as".
6. Under "Name", type ".removefacelock" (without the quotes, with the preceding period, and without the .txt extension)
7. Verify that the destination folder is "/storage/emulated/0", or "/sdcard", or whatever your storage area is named.
8. Press OK.
9. Press the back arrow until you get to the menu.
10. repeat steps 3-5.
11. Under "Name", type ".removesetupwizard" (without the quotes, with the preceding period, and without the .txt extension)
12. Repeat steps 7 and 8.
Done.

I hope you dont mind but i posted a fix that you posted back in another thread for the Google Dialer fix, i've just edited it slightly but your fix definitely works. Here's my post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68580518&postcount=1564

This thread was definitely necessary - one post in another thread wasn't enough to get proper oversight in your work. Thanks for this! Your scripts work great for me, as well as the DeltaDroid Base GApps.

Thanks for coming up with this idea.
It would be really great if you can make a script that can delete aosp launcher as well. As in under the name "Extreme"
Just saying. @androcraze **Cheers**

I'd rather include removing the launcher in the "Maximum" version. Do most folks who install the GApps also install the Google launcher?

I think giving users an option to keep aosp launcher would be better. Otherwise maximum will have to come with a Big Warning on launcher installation imo.
Really appreciate your prompt reply.

I don't like "Extreme"....
"Maximum", "Medium", "Minimum", "M.......m".
"Mayhem".
Is there anything else that can be scrubbed (to be replaced by something else)?
Mayhem is cool.
'Magnum' ,If it is ok.

In firearms nomenclature, "Maximum" is greater than "Magnum"; the .357 Maximum is larger and packs more punch than the .357 Magnum.
I'll stick with Mayhem, and I'll need a walkthrough on installing the Google Launcher.

I am afraid to speak beyond my capabilities. But I usually flash in this order :
Rom > Debloater script > Pixel Launcher / Google Launcher package > GApps Package (Delta Droid or Open Gapps , both of them works Ok.)
I face no issues following these steps. I've tried these with Santhosh build as well as other nougat roms.
Can't say about marshmallow roms.
This is so cool, thank you so much!
Used it to remove AOSP Bloatware, from the Nougat AOSP Rom for Nexus 5, and then I had room to install G apps mini over micro. Yay!
Changes for 20161015 (All scripts):
Mayhem, Maximum, Medium, Minimum:
- Removed "BasicDreams" from the debloating scripts. It's not wallpaper bloat, and it removes functionality without offering a suitable replacement.
Medium:
- Added removal of AOSP Keyboard (LatinIME) and added suggested link to AnySoftKeyboard. LatinIME has features that are broken (swipe, for one), and AnySoft Keyboard is feature-rich in every way.
@androcraze is there a way for me to edit the Maximum debloater so that it will not remove the keyboard. Or can you tell me how do I install the google keyboard as a system app. thanks
