Dummy [HOWTO] - Blocking Amazon Firmware Updates - Fire TV General

There seems to be a ton of confusion/re-posting on the Bounty Root thread about how to block the Fire TV from pulling down new OTA firmware. As we wait patiently for the existing root exploit to be patched and released, blocking the auto-update is critical to maintaining that root.
There are two URLs reported to need blocking. The first is http://amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net. However there have been reports elsewhere that blocking this URL breaks some of the apps/services on the device as well.
A forum member suggests that this address be blocked instead; http://firs-ta-g7g.amazon.com
They report that most streaming services are still functional when blocking this address. This is the address I'm using and so far, so good.
How to;
If you are using a DD-WRT based router, life is easy. Log into your router and go to Access Restrictions > WAN Access (on v24sp2mega at least). Set it up like this, clicking save and apply after you're done;

If you are using stock Linksys/Cisco firmware, your page will look more like the one in this post (thanks to retroben for the image)
I know it's basic, but maybe this will help those with questions (and prevent the 1529th person from asking the question in the root thread )
Cheers

Sorry for the umpteenth posts of mine in the rooting thread, and you're welcome.
Feel free to use my troubles as an example of unwitty stupidity.
First, you should either make your Fire TV forget the network if you know the password to log back in,or unplug it while it is idle, this is my extra step of security when setting up OpenDNS.
For those of you out there like me who don't have any other Wi-Fi accessing device, you will not see the openDNS service as enabled.
To enable it and make presets safely after setting the router's DNS numbers appropriately, you can change your computer's DNS numbers temporarily from "internet options" so you can manage the OpenDNS settings after the "success" message without putting your Fire TV at risk for the OTA update.
I reccommend not changing the router connection type to "static ip" since I had so much trouble with the Cisco Linksys E2500 killing all internet access until switching back to auto.

For Netgear routers go to: http://www.routerlogin.net/adv_index.htm
Go to "Security" on the left hand side column.
Then "Block Sites".
Set "Keyword Blocking" to the "Always" radio button.
Add the keyword: firs-ta-g7g.amazon.com
Click Apply
It should look like this when you are done:

For ASUS routers, go to Firewall > URL Filter and enter the two URLs

For routers with tomato firmware (I'm using tomato shibby)
Go to access restriction and create a new rule as the following:

Heres how to set up Open DNS filtering on an Asus RT-N66U running Merlin FW (Must also have dns-o-matic configured under DDNS so any wan ip changes will update on open-dns's side - or if you have a static dont worry youre good to go)

Thanks all for posting the additional router configs - my sample size was limited

Having trouble blocking using a Verizon fios actiontec router. I think I have it set ok. To test I reset the fire tv and it updates. When I check the router config, te fire tv has a different device name so now the rule does not apply. How can I test?

To be safe it, set it as a global block or block it at a mac level, not at a device name level.

On the phone now with verizon/ actiontec...just got disconnected!!!!! Unable to find a way to block all. Seems like when the fire tv is reset it generates a new device name on the router. So, the old rule will not apply. Tech support sucks!

If possible get your own router that way you have more options. Pretty much all major brands have been covered in this thread now. The few Verizon routers I have looked around on are very limited on what they can do...

Looks like I will have to figure out how to use open dns or buy a new router. According to Actiontec, even if I set up a rule to block access, the router ignores all rules from 1145-1259 am. It does this so the router can update, check world time... When this happens ALL device blocks are lifted.

Thanks for the guide. I blocked the suggested URLs, but is there any way to test that I have done so correctly? I would hate an auto-update to remove my ability to root in the future.

I have an easy way that I used successfully.
Just set a computer's "internet options" dns to the OpenDNS numbers and try to visit a webpage that is blocked to see if the site gets blocked.
When the amzdigitaldownloads edgesuite site is blocked properly, you will see a page that says so instead of the "file not found" message.
If you use the services on the Fire TV,even something sideloaded like the "Polaris Go" app,you will have to block only the other mentioned link.
I could not get it to load Table Flip or any videos to show up anymore, but the website's videos work fine on a browser.
I am additionally using the DNS-O-Matic,a partner site of OpenDNS to make sure it keeps my router IP address up to date for keeping the sites blocked properly. (static ip causes network failure issues for me)
I keep the page loaded on an Opera Browser tab at all times to make sure it remains logged in.

i have to select a time period for rule to be active. actiontec model only allows in 15min increments. so... do i select 12am to 12am or 12am to 11:45pm? does the firetv keeping checking every second if there is an update?

Thanks for all the info...if thanks are not allowed please delete

Verify blocking
I have a TP-Link R860 router,
I set it to block firs-ta-g7g.amazon.com.
I also have openDNS blocking that site.
Is there way to verify that it's blocked.
Clicking 'Check for updates' still seems to work.
Thanks

If you blocked it for all devices , your pc browser should not be a able to open either site

Just received Myne in Greece through reship.... now I had all ready cut the address through ddwrt .. i will light it up when I go home. I can upgrade to latest firmware and after I stop the updates? I think jcase had stated we can update to current latest and root when it will published will work.

thats really excellent, no more ball ache changing app icons
It works! This is exactly what I needed to do with a few widgets from some apps (their icons and label) but didn't have all that much time. Simply changed some widget icons/labels inside an apk, installed the apk and it works. Well done and thank you!
I install the apk by manually pushing it to the SD card though. The built-in barcode functionality doesn't work as expected. My phone browser can't open the generated link.

Cool, tnx for trying and replying.
Whaha, that rhymes! Sweet
Happy to hear it served you when needed
For now its barcode function will only work correctly if your phone is on the same network as your computer (so with wifi enabled.)
Maybe that's the limitation you encountered?
Thinking of ways to bypass this limitation, but have to keep in mind some security related aspects.

Hmm, should work without usb.
That was one of my design goals.
Yesterday had some similar problems trying to change system apk's.
Not sure yet, but the browser didn't accept the connection either.
Some technical background:
In the background it's nothing more than a temporary striped down C# webserserver hosting the apk file until it has been downloaded. So purely http here

Since the server runs on the local host without a client service/app or permission to the client, I don't think you can do that. I could be wrong but that's like Simple File Sharing in Windows (which I have disabled). Your network subnet access and those ports would be required to be open. I think the option would work if you had a client side app/service (for the phone) but then that would be like adbWireless
The adbWireless option runs fine with your app though. I actually just pushed in some Android files using it, no problem

True, your firewall needs to accept incoming connections to the program.
Problably vendor specific, but my build-in windows firewall asked me the first time I run the app if I would like to add it to its exeption list.
Be aware: the server will choose a random port every time it runs.
The client you are talking about would be the browser on your phone, It should automatically be activated when you scan your barcode (all free barcode scanners I know of have this capability in them).
Yep, the browser does open but doesn't recognize the link (no access basically). The generated link itself is valid because I can download it if I use the computers net connection over USB.

[Q] MSCHAPv2, PEAP, eduroam issues

Hello everyone.
Following two days of googling and several hours spent doing so I am this close to selling my brand new Iconia A500 and getting an iPad - this is how desperate I am.
The problem is as follows: my school uses eduroam, a wifi using WPA-EAP PEAP MSCHAPv2 authentication protocols. I am using Acer Iconia A500 tablet sporting the original Honeycomb OS, rooted. When I try to connect to the network, it stucks on Connecting and eventually it gives up.
What I've done:
I've set the network settings to what they should be (PEAP, MSCHAPv2, my username and password, no certificates), didn't work.
I've downloaded server certificates (CESNET CA root, personal, 3), installed them and tried using those to no avail.
I've downloaded Wifi Advanced Configuration Editor and tried setting the proper setting in it, didn't help.
I've manually edited my wpa_supplicant.conf according to this post, didn't help.
I've downloaded and tried using Full Wifi (I think that's what it was called) which should allow me to set settings as well, didn't help.
I've done a factory reset.
I've checked for firmware updates.
I've contacted the IT guy that should be in charge of this network. His reply was that "His Desire Z connected simply by setting the PEAP, MSCHAPv2, name and pwd and that I should google around". Obviously, this didn't help at all.
I've read the topics offered to me by xda after typing in the title of this thread, nothing in them helped me.
I've installed terminal emulator, remounted system partition as r/w (took me several tries and programs) and copied over a new wpa_supplicant that I edited according to eduroam support site (disregard that you don't understand the language), along with the .pem certificate. Didn't work.
Right now I have no more ideas as to what should I do.
Apparently this is a problem some Android phones have, some don't. I would like to add I can connect on my laptop using Win XP without a problem and that my friend using iPad connects without the slightest hitch as well, so the network is most probably fine - I've even tested it in two different institutions (eduroam is a pan-university service, so each faculty has connection) - this to eliminate that it's a problem with the AP or somesuch.
One thing I noticed is, that when I set the Phase 2 authentication to MSCHAPv2in the wifi settings (regular Android interface) for this network (eduroam), click save and then reopen them again, the Phase 2 authentication is set to None. This was worrying, but using Wifi Advanced Configuration Editor I've checked that in THERE the eduroam network DOES have Phase 2 auth. set to MSCHAPv2. What is doesn't show is the password, but I assume this is for security reasons (doesn't even show the usual "dots" that replace the characters).
I would be extremely grateful to anyone who would help me solve this problem. Knowledge that I'll use the college wifi convinced me to buy the wifi only version of the device and not being able to use it (regardless of that I can use it on my home wifi and in caffees and such) is really a deal-breaker for me. Being a student and this the only student network spread through my whole country (several cities I visit) makes being unable to use it almost a good enough reason to sell the device - which I would hate to do, because other than this I've found no issue with it and am loving both the looks and the performance it offers.
Thank you all for reading and I'm looking forward to your wise advices.
liveangelic
I' m having the same issues with my Asus Transformer here at Stuttgart, just to share...
Have you found anything yet?
Oh, and my Desire also easily connected, like your IT guys's phone.
It must be something related to Honeycomb.
First, promise you won't laugh.
... done?
I thought the password was different and kept in typing it wrong, time after time after time.
/facepalm
Ok, not laughing... I guess... hehehehe
So, no problem witht the connection at all, just the password?
Since you have made a lot of changes and stuff before entering the correct password (so it is hard to know if any of them really helped), which one of the actions you took do you think would be a good try? I have already installed the certificates, and used the Advanced Config Editor app.
Ok, I'm laughing now, but I promisse it's about something else... heheheh...
Well, apparently, it was none of the changes I made, it was just the password. I know this, because I've factory-reset it just before trying out the correct password, without doing any other changes.
As for the changes: downloading, installing and setting up the certificates is indeed a neccessity. I don't think installing extra apps helped at all. What I think might be quite helpful is editing the wpa_supplicant.conf, so I would look into that if I were you and if you're stuck otherwise.
Either way, good luck
This used to work for me when my tablet was on 3.0.1. When I got the 3.1 update, it no longer works. Level 2 support just scratched their head and opened a bug for me. Since I use my tablet at work, I'm looking to downgrade to 3.0.1.

any results? I've lost work connection with both secure PEAP and fully open - but I can connect at home with WPA2 this is the newest patch on Acer's site dated 7/19/11 "connect WiFi unsuccessfully" patch (which doesn't work still, sigh...)
Oh, happy day!
I don`t know if any of you are still suffering with this issue, but... after months of frustration, I finally got my eduroam connection working:
With some ideas from here and here, for me it's working as the image below (taken from the second link):

The only thing different from the image above, is that I needed to select the Phase 2 Authentication as MSCHPv2 (in the image is set as "none"). Otherwise, it's working here in Stuttgart.
I hope it helps anyone!

Itzhak Avraham - A Security researcher just unveiled an app called Anti, or Android Network Toolkit at Defcon hacker conference in Las Vegas Friday and plans to make available to Android in coming days. The app is designed to bring easy hacking on the go which brings all the hacking tools available to penetration testers on PCs to smartphones, with an automated interface intended to make sniffing local networks and owning remote servers as simple as pushing a few buttons.
While Anti will be great for researcher to do mobile pen testing, it could be very dangerous and a hacker could, for instance, walk into a coffee shop or a corporate office with his phone and connect in public WiFI to start sussing out machines for data theft or malware infection. Here is what Avraham says:
“Anti is your perfect mobile companion, doing it all for you. Please remember, with great power comes great responsibility. Use it wisely.”
Anti, will be available on Android Market next week as a free app with a $10 corporate upgrade and will ask users in its terms of service to limit their hacking to “white hat” penetration testing.
Every defcon they come out with vapor ware. I'll believe it if or when they even post a beta somewhere by the end of the month. I seriously doubt it will be out by the end of next week on the market.

Being in the security business, I really look forward to see how many vectors & versions will be included...
Hope it'll be good.
Cant wait till it comes out.

What is Anti?
ZImperium "Anti" LTD is proud to annonce Android Network Toolkit - Anti.
Anti consists of 2 parts: The Anti version itself and extendable plugins. Upcoming updates will add functionality, plugins or vulnerabilities/exploits to Anti
Using Anti is very intuitive - on each run, Anti will map your network, scan for active devices and vulnerabilities, and will display the information accordingly: Green led signals an 'Active device', Yellow led signals "Available ports", and Red led signals "Vulnerability found". Also, each device will have an icon representing the type of the device. When finished scanning, Anti will produce an automatic report specifying which vulnerabilities you have or bad practices used, and how to fix each one of them.
What is AntiCredit?
AntiCredit is the app to purchase status and credits for Anti usage.
Once you buy Silver, Gold or Platinum(for corporate users and power users), your status is saved forever. You can use MITM,DOS,SPY,REPLACE IMAGES and other features like PASSWORD CRACKER, but you also get N amount of credits, these credits can be used for attacks and reports.
Once Anti has mapped your network, it is time to choose the attack method:
[+] Scan - This will scan the selected target for open ports and vulnerabilities, also allowing the user to select a specific scanning script for a more advanced/targeted scan.
[+] Spy - This will 'sniff' images transferred to/from the selected device and display them on your phone in a nice gallery layout. If you choose a network subnet/range as target, then all images transferred on that network - for all connected devices - will be shown. Another feature of the Spy plugin is to sniff URLs (web sites) and non-secured (ie, not HTTPS) username/passwords logins, shown on the bottom drawer.
[+] D.O.S - This will cause a Denial Of Service (D.O.S) for the selected target, ie. it will deny them any further access to the internet until you exit the attack.
[+] Replace images - This will replace all images transferred to/from the target with an Anti logo, thus preventing from attacked used seeing any images on their browsers while the browse the internet, except for a nice looking Anti logo...
[+] M.I.T.M - The Man In The Middle attack (M.I.T.M) is an advanced attack used mainly in combination with other attack. It allows invoking specific filters to manipulate the network data. Users can also add their own mitm filters to create more mitm attacks.
[+] Attack - This will initiate a vulnerability attack using our Cloud service against a specific target. Once executed successfully, it will allow the attack to control the device remotely from your phone.
[+] Report - This will generate a vulnerability report with findings, recommendations and tips on how to fix found vulnerabilities or bad practices used.
Anti supports & uses the followings OSS tools :
nmap
Ettercap
driftnet
THC-Hydra
Metasploit
We will be releasing patch sets for OSS shortly. This should assist developers to compile binaries used by Anti!
nice.
Could you sum up what data I should expect to see that your application is sending back to you ?
I'd like to know what you are sending home, even using this tool could violate an pentesting NDA.
The best would be if you sent absolutely nothing back - but I guess you are a bit more curious than that.
anti (android network toolkit)
it's out but you can only get the lite version because you can't pay that .
the app that you can purchase anti gold or whatever is pull of from android market of is not released .
so theire is now danger to this app !!!
where can found platinium ver. (cracked)
requesting warez is a bannable offence under xda rules of use.

Please turn off proxy once download has started, I turned off download ability to speed up my server, so you'll get error when download with proxy.
Note that if you opened the app detail or OEM section in market before use the proxy, your phone will cache it for 20 minutes, and no matter what you try, you phone will give you 8000ffff error. So restart your phone to clear the cache.
Install 'SysApp Pusher' in market before use the proxy, then you'll be able to install every OEM apps.
If you see 'not compatible' message, try 3 seconds later with lucky until success. You'll have 1/3 chance to change to target OEM everytime you retry.

One thing to note for everyone.
Since it is a proxy, there is the chance that some sensitive data may be transmitting across the wire to the proxy (I'm assuming it's a Fiddler proxy due to the default 8888 port number). I would turn off all e-mail from syncing while running this..

AdBlocker & etc. for Non-Rooted Note 4

Since we have yet to see root obtained for the Retail Note 4 I have had to improvise & look for alternative ways to have things I use Root for.
Adblocking has served one big reason people wish to obtain, so here's a solution for that.
AdGuard

Some time ago when Adguard was still on Play Market you could have purchased a subscription there to activate premium features (like ad blocking in apps).
Thanks to Google we don't need it anymore, so it is removed from app manifest in the latest beta version.

Btw we've just created a forum thread about our app here on xda-developers:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/adguard-ad-blocker-doesnt-require-root-t2958895
been running it for a day now,, seems like battery is taking a little hit on it
let me explain how ad guard works vs adblock plus.
adblock plus uses a localhost reverse proxy that filters ads based on lists through your phone. one disadvantage of this is needing to manually configure any network you connect to. another big disadvantage is android will not route https apps through a proxy, so apps will still have ads.
adguard uses a localhost vpn that reroutes all traffic to filter ads based on configurable lists in your phone. the advantage of this is all ads can be filtered this way. the main disadvantage of this method is MMS, since everything is rerouted, MMS do not use their assigned APN, resulting in failed to send or retrieve MMS. another disadvantage is tethering, since a VPN is already a tethered connection, another one cannot be created.
if you're gonna try ad Guard try this test version I'm using. it will block https ads (ads found in-app)

battery is hard to scale. data as well. go look at your data usage and ad guard will probably be taking up the hugest chunk. that's cause instead of chrome or fb getting credit for that data/process, ad guard is.
the built in battery readers make assumptions based on an overview.

How do you measure it? The problem is that different battery saver apps show different results.
Some apps show 3-7% (which is true), some (like Battery Doctor) show 15-25%.

i literally watched it fall 10% in a hour , when prior to installation i was losing around 4% per hour, no other apps running in background.

I'm able to send and receive MMS without any issues. I've had it installed for an hour or so and have not noticed any increased battery drain yet.

How actively have you been using the Internet at that point?
And some more important questions:
1. Did you use a VPN or proxy mode?
2. Was it a beta version or stable one?
And one more thing: I'm not saying that Adguard is light on the battery. There is certainly space for optimization.
Hi @soraxd! Let me add some details on how it works.

That's half true. If you have ROOT access, ABP uses iptables to reroute the traffic to their local proxy.
Adguard can work the same way. You can switch filtering mode in app advanced settings.

And that's not normal. Stable version has a bug with some MMS apps but it should be ok in latest beta.
If not - please send us a message from the app, we'll fix it.

That's true.
Quote from our FAQ:
Android does not allow tethered connections to route through the VPN. This is an Android rule that applies to all VPN apps running on non-rooted devices. This is done for security, out of concern that if a malicious individual was able to get access to your tether, they could piggy back onto the VPN connection.

Tethering is broken in VPN-mode only. If you use proxy filtering mode, everything should be ok.

Proxy is lighter on the battery. But it's rather complex if you don't have ROOT access.
So, how actively have you used the internet?
This 6% overhead is ok if you've been surfing (or playing online, or something like this) all the time.
But it's not ok if you've been doing nothing.

the app shows a total of 60mb of data transferred through it. I haven't done much beyond checking tapatalk, facebook, and a little google +
how does one set up proxy w\o root?

In this case 6% is too much indeed.
