How to flash a kernel? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I downloaded Franco kernel and I'm running smoothrom with leankernel however I want to keep what I have just replace lean with Franco. I saw on Google something about fastboot but couldn't find any instructions.
All I want to do is flash Franco kernel and reboot without having to start from scratch or build an installer, the Franco updater app didn't work for me.

And that would be located where?
Does nobody else install a custom rom and then realize the kernels packaged with the rom are NOT the kernel they wanted?
Not everyone is a code breathing developer-type rom-breathing linux-dragon.
I like custom roms because I like to unlock performance but i by no means am an expert with this stuff.

Franco kernel in development? That's what you are trying to install....correct? Same thread you downloaded it from. Probably near the top of the list.....or a quick Google search or XDA forum search will find it fast.
I'll find it and post a link......tho I bet you can find it quicker.
Do yourself a favor tho....always read the instructions and/or opening post of anything you intend to flash. Could be very important info....that will help you install it.....as well as warnings. Otherwise you will have problems I'm sure. Maybe even brick your device.
Just trying to help my friend. Not pick on you.

Never wait for answers when you can find them yourself.....do that and you'll be a pro in no time.

Team Nyx
-- DemonWav -- Nushor -- Onecosmic -- PaulForde -- RaymondDull -- Trae32566 --
This ROM is based directly on the source code straight from Google themselves, the way Android is meant to be. This ROM is produced by a collaboration of many different people, with the main development being done by Onecosmic himself. We strive to bring releases as often as possible and provide a stable AOSP ROM.
We are in the midst of many changes and will try to have our source code back up as soon as possible.
We do not support anything that is not produced by us!
Team ICSSGS is now Team Nyx!
We have made lots of changes, and part of that includes moving our base from XDA to our own website. All information, as well as downloads will be on our website, but please continue your discussions and we will continue our support here on the forums. Please check out our site at http://team-nyx.com/

The kernel wasn't changed, actually. And there is a chance, but we're focusing on the big issues now, we'll put more features in later.
is this build going to be pure ASOP first? the other thread was talking of changing the "crappy" battery icon and other stuff.
ASOP fist. right?

That's another thing, that other thread was complete bullcrap. We are focusing 100% on AOSP at the moment. I'm working on side flashes to try to improve the rom, but they are not a part of the rom or have anything to do with Onecosmic.
I don't know why you said it won't boot. I'm on a7 with captivate kernel you posted in google code. Can't get 3g working yet but it boots just fine
If I want to flash from apex 11 w/ dark kernel, what's the process I should go through?

Download the required files (ROM, Kernel, and SU fix), and make sure you have a GB Bootloader.
1. Backup your files, and do a Nandroid
2. Reboot to Recovery
3. Wipe Data, Cache, and Dalvik. No need to wipe system because it's done already on the updater script.
4. Install .zip from SD card. First of all flash the ROM, then go for the Kernel.
5. Reboot, the first boot takes longer.
6. Setup your account.
7. Boot to recovery, and install the SU.zip to grant you with Root access.
8. Reboot, and enjoy.
Notice I do not ask you to wipe and flash several times, it honestly works at the first attempt.
Good Luck.
dumb question is this still a port for the captivate ? and will flashing this mean you need specific boot loaders to start I run i9000 boot loaders and sorry for posting question here but never got an answer in the q&a will ICS support HSDPA like JVT did?
Just wanted to thanks guys. This is awesome.
@OP
Is it the same thing to go to: http://code.google.com/p/ice-cream-sandwich-sgs/downloads/list, download the A7 ROM "ICS_4.0.1_r1-alpha7.zip", and flash the Captivate Kernel? Or are you uploading a different version, with more changes?
I am asking because I honestly feel like this A7 update is a tad slower than the A6 i downloaded previously. (The A6 zip i was linked to already merged both the Kernel, and the ROM into one same updater script.)

Yes, It is working for the Captivate. So far, all you have to do is download the I900 ROM, and then flash the Captivate kernel.

It is the same, I am just packaging it up to simplify it for the noobs. I just uploaded a .zip, then I realized that I had screwed up with it, so I'm re-uploading now.
EDIT: As for it being slower, Alpha 7 has some wicked partitioning changes that should speed it up. Of course we are always trying to make it better, but HW Accel. is built into Alpha 7.

Aosp roms discussion thread. [Minor FAQ inside]

This thread is for discussing aosp roms, like Slim, Carbon, etc. except for CM though since it has its own thread. This is meant to keep the unhelping chit-chatter out of the development threads where bug reports best reside. When posting here, clarify what aosp rom you're on. Do not post bug reports here, post them in their respective development threads!
One more thing! While this thread progresses, use search and/or read the faq to see if your question has already been posted before, to avoid repetitiveness and us older lads becoming grumpy.
F.A.Q: (frequently asked questions)
I would like to dualboot, what should I do?
Flash siyah kernel
Help! I flashed siyah and now my rom doesn't boot!
It's because whatever rom you use has a newer mali driver which most kernels aren't updated for. Especially siyah which hasn't seen some dev love in ages.
What rom should I flash?
We don't know, you have to try them out yourself!
What's gapps, and is this inside xx rom?
Gapps is short for google apps, which is the Play store and some other apps you sorely need. Go too http://goo.im/gapps and download the gapps package for whatever version you have. Newer aosp roms are most certainly 4.2.2. Some roms, like Slim, have their own separate gapps packages specially made for those roms. In those cases, the standard gapps from goo.im will not work!
Help! I flashed xx rom but now it doesn't boot!
Try making a factory reset in the recovery and reflash whatever rom you were on. Also, in most cases, CWM works better for rom installations. Twrp craps out for unknown reasons.
Help! I wiped data and reflashed the rom but it still doesn't boot!
That sounds like a rom issue. Try flashing an earlier version of the rom.
Help! Something screwed up and now my phone doesn't boot anymore!
Well, reboot into recovery and see if a reflash helps. It is always recommended to regularly keep your system backed up in case something nasty happens. Perform a nandroid backup every once in a while.
What is a nandroid backup?
It's like a screenshot of your current state which you can return to if something bad happens. A nandroid backup backs up the system, boot (kernel) and data and, if specified/selectable, it also backs up cache and recovery. Maybe even efs (in twrp). However, it doesn't back up the modem!
I flashed xx kernel and I now get a black screen upon reboot!
That is because the rom you flashed has the new mali driver from the 4.2.1 leak and the kernel you flashed isn't updated with this driver. Stay on the provided kernel for now.
Thanks to:
I forgot to give thanks where due, and I'm so sorry for that. If I got an advice from you, hit me up and your name goes on this list.
C_tho; for mentioning the mali driver stuff.
Noble Sir Slaphead20; for suggesting I'd maintain an FAQ and suggesting I'd make an entry covering gapps.

Only Siyah, and Siyah only supports the older aosp roms.
Speaking of aosp, I just had an urge to flash Carbon. Think I'll do it, because I'm a bit bored of running touchwiz and I've run CM for so long I need change. I didn't like RootBox that much (too many settings, lol. I like a "leaner" setup) and there's no official aokp for our device. I also didn't like Slim, so I'll give Carbon another go.

What DSA said. We do not welcome JellyBam here anymore because the developer broke a lot of rules of XDA. Plagiarism and violating the gpl, amongst others.

I updated the op with a small faq. More to come in the following days.
In the Faqs it might be worth mentioning in the gapps bit that some Roms ie slim, have their own gapps, and others won't work
Just flashed Carbon 1.5, not regretting it thus far! This ROM gives the word buttery smooth a whole new meaning!

Not sure this goes here, but ill give it a go anyways.
In the Slimbean thread there was a lot of talk about mali drivers. Now could someone please give me some info on the matter cause seems like I missed something.
Basicly what im wondering is whats up with the mali drivers and why do I want them?
Sorry if this is off-topic or has been answered somewhere else.

The only problem with SuperNexus is it is updated very slowly. Also Faryaab has exams to do now, so it will not get updated at least until he is done with them.
If you want a super light rom I would reccomend SlimBean it's fast, and light, battery is acceptable, and it's easy to change settings like screen density and navbar settings without having to edit build.prop and decompile framework-res.apk, which you will have to do on SuperNexus.
what about the smoothness of it?
Another one there to vouch for Carbon, running it on both phone and tablet

I love AOSP Roms and thank you for starting this thread. Unfortunately I am afraid that I can't use such Roms as a daily driver because of the camera problems. Bluetooth also seems to be a problem for some users.
Guys I am facing Memory leak problem with the Slim bean 4.2.2.....is it normal? cant seems to find any solution....
you'd be better off asking in the slim thread

Battery % in top right action bar?

Is there a mod for our Nexus 4 that changes the stock battery icon in the top right to a circle, or at least shows a %?
I had this mod on my old Atrix 2 that I just upgrade from, and I miss it a lot...
Yes I searched before I made the new thread, and could only find stuff for other phones...
It's not ROMd but I do plan on rooting soon. I'd like to avoid ROMing as I am very satisfied with the stock one.

that´s a standard cyanogen feature...
give cm a try, it´s stable like stock
CM10 is the one I should use then?
I'm reading the guide right now on how to root/rom etc...
Will I need a different kernel too?
Also, this is another issue I'm having, will CM10 fix this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41861539#post41861539
If you want to avoid flashing to the latest nightly of the Rom, I recommend MiNCO as it's near stock with minimal customization and updates. You can change the battery icon like in CM.

Thats the one Id recomend; you don't need another kernel, as all Roms come with a kernel already bundled in. However you can install other kernels instead.
And yes, CyanogenMod will allow you to make those changes straight away, just go into launcher settings and system from the settings app in CM.

Those are nightlies. They fix some bugs and build every day. You can flash them and post some bugs or something.
But recently they released the first stable version. You can flash it and wait untill there is another one.
I flashed everyday the nightlies and they are as stable as stock so no worry about that. And you don't have to flash every nightly if you don't want. Just flash them when you feel to.

Hi folks,
So my mother has a I9505 galaxy s4 (italian) and I want to install a custom recovery and rom for her to hrlp the device be more functional and fast. Can you please suggest which rom I should choose and what steps I should follow to install the recovery etc..
Thanks!
You can flash twrp from Odin and then you can use twrp to flash custom ROMs.
If you want a very stable ROM, you should stock with these stock ROM or custom ROMs that are as close to stock as possible.
That simple? TWRP and then the custom ROM of choice? Which ROM do you recommend for daily usage which is fast and possibly based off Android 6 or 7?

Are you familiar with Odin? Is the s4 already rooted? (Towel root worked for me) and that is done directly from the s4. As far as ROMs go I have tried almost all of them and ultimately I really enjoyed the tipsy ROM but it runs on kit kat.. Google just recently released Google assistant for all devices running 5.0 and up. So I went to CM 12 running 5.1.1 and it runs pretty smoothly. The most important thing to remember to always always always back up your device..ALWAYS LOL.
And when I first started to dabble in rooting I had the T-Mobile Galaxy S.. The first one that came with Avatar lol.. I'll just say this.. As long as it turns on and u can enter either recovery or download mode you can pretty much recover from and mistake.. Pretty much.
XDA has a great first start section for rooting. And most of the developers are very good at explaining the step by step.
I recommend getting very familiar with your recovery since that will be your primary source of flashing.. Because u can't just flash one! Lol once u get your first successful flash Ro a new custom ROM its like sex.. Gotta see what else u can flash to the device ( for example lucky patcher) and then you will start learning that the developers have some really cool stuff out there..
And CM does nightly ROMs meaning its constantly being updated!
Just do your research first if u don't know ask( obviously lol) Google Google Google lol and ALWAYS ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR DEV.
Titanium Backup in NY opinion is the best.. Hope I didn't get to off topic and I hope I helped.. If u have any other questions I will do NY beat to help and answer them.
PAY IT FORWARD AND HELP THE NEXT GUY/GIRL..
