Sprint LG G2, home key not working, screen not locking, no notifications - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently updated to KitKat OTA a few days ago, I flashed the hotspot mod (although it didn't work) And I have TWRP installed. Aside from that I haven't touched any system files. The home button does nothing, it flashes and causes the phone to vibrate upon press but doesn't actually DO anything. I am not getting any notifications at all, my phone will vibrate but the notifications will not appear. Also, I have it set to lock with a PIN. But it doesn't lock, I'll lock it, wait, unlock it and it won't ask for the pin it'll just be right where it was when I locked it. Please could someone help me? It was working fine earlier, except the Play Store kept giving "No connection" so I restarted my phone and then all of these issues arose. Please could someone help me?
Edit: considering trying a factory reset through the settings, would this be safe considering I am rooted with TWRP installed?
Edit2: I'm trying to flash a stock Jellybean image using LG Flash tool. But the tutorial is telling me I need to go into device manager and set the COM port to 41. The problem is device manager isn't showing any com ports at all. I have the drivers installed and they worked fine before all this happened. The computer also doesn't recognize the phone's internal storage. Could I try flashing it without setting the COM port? Or could someone help me set it?

After installing the the hotspot mod it didn't work and issues started arising so my question is did you remove the mod after you knew it didn't work? Also about you flashing stock, there is no way to do it without switching the com port to 41, if you don't change it the flash fails at around 49% or so, have you tried switching usb ports?

I have not tried removing the mod, as I'm honestly unsure how. I deleted the backup I had made because no issues had arisen and it took around 2 gigs of space if that was needed to remove it. I'm going to try more when I get home soon and hope I can get the COM port to appear under device manager. I could see the hotspot mod causing issues with connection, since it affects USB connection. Is there any way I can remove it without a backup? Really shouldn't have deleted my backup..
EDIT: Got it working, guess it had to be in download mode to set the port and I just missed that part Working on the flashing now.

well for future reference a backup should be stored in the pc for the future because it's one of the ways to go to stock before you started modifying files, and yea download mode very important

Turn Off USB Storage On Phone = Frozen Phone

Hey All,
On 2.2 now and they changed the USB mass storage interface a little.
When I plug the phone in, it connects fine. I can put files on the SD card etc.
If I click the "Turn off" button to turn off USB storage on the phone, it crashes the phone (just freezes up and sits there, the progress indicator won't even spin).
I have tried unmounting the phone in windows too first of course and it won't help. Just unplugging the cable seems to work but then it thinks its still connected.
Anyone have any ideas? This definitely was fine pre-2.2
I get the same. First time I've had to do a pull the battery restart on the N1 :/
Yes pulling the battery is the only way to restore the phone i've tried it a dozen times and it seems to be a serious problem.
I think this started after applying the CM root mods... I am using the kernel .34 version and I am having the same issue. I was running without this mod for a while and didn't have this issue, so either it's related to the root mod or it's some weird issue that doesn't show itself until something else happens.

I also have the .34 kernel from CM for root.
It's definitely the CM root mod.
Yeah its been confirmed on that thread. Known issue I guess.
This thread needs a bump!
this is a well known issue with .34 kernals
just apply CM's root mod stock kernal, and it will work fine
all .34 kernals have this problem and im sure lots of people are looking into it.
Yes there is a workaround if its really bugging you, revert to an earlier 33 or stock kernel (I did).

[Q&A] Fixes and Questions

I have created this thread to clean up the forums a bit and to fix one confusion that most people in the forums which are saying which can mislead people to think that user means that when they don't mean that.
Q: What is the different between brick and soft-brick?
A: This is the issue I was talking about above.
A soft-brick is where you cannot access the kernel or/and rom and a brick is where you cannot access the bootloader so you cannot turn on your device unless you JTag it.
Q: Since I flashed a kernel I got stuck on the splash screen (Google logo bootloader screen), I attempted to reflash but it did not help.
A: Make sure the kernel is supported by the Rom's build number and Android version, to fix this you have to flash a supported kernel, remember that not all kernels are supported.
Q: Since I upgraded to Android 4.3 via OTA I noticed a large battery drain, WHAT IS GOING ON?!?!
A: On day 1 after the upgrade Google Backup will be using your battery for restoring your data so you will have to wait until it is done BUT then it will backup your settings such has brightness and app data but you can switch off "App Data" from the sync settings to stop Google Backup.
Q: A while/day later the issue is gone but Google Services is draining my battery.
A: That is actually Google Maps doing the draining, it is using the internet to locate you, to stop the battery drain go to Settings, Location settings, and disable WiFi & Mobile network location.
Q: Titanium Backup is not restoring my backups, what can I do?
A: Flash SuperSU v1.51 via recovery, this will fix the root issues and the Titanium Backup restore issues.
Q: Root is not working on Android 4.3, I'm panicking!!!!!!!!!!!!
A: Don't worry, flash SuperSU v1.51 has mentioned above to fix root since it now uses the SU Deamon due to the new security.
Q: The stock recovery says "No command.", what can I do?
A: Either keep pressing or hold volume up and power to unlock the menu.
This does not always work for certain users so I would try volume down and power so see if that does anything.
Q: How do I disable the OTA updater?
A: You will need root and an application, thanks to @joshuab227 for the information, the following is from joshuab227's post:
Here's how to disable the auto OTA download on any ROM
Install Autorun Manager from the Play store.
Then enter its recommended advanced mode.
Go into the settings and enable the following : system entries and system app disable.
Disable com.android.gsf.update.SystemUpdateService$Reciever under Google Service Framework

Q: The Play Store app and web store will not recognise my device!
A: @ColdEmbrace has got this issue and found the solution so that should explain why the start of the post starts how it starts:
After trying all of the above options my device was still not showing in the store. I went to this link.
play.google.com/settings
I clicked on one of my devices and clicked the update option this loaded my Nexus 4 onto the list it is now available on the web store.
Thanks everyone for the advice and I hope this helps people who are still having issues.

Q: My device says that I have no internet connection with a empty signal bar with or without a sim card.
A: The user @matt0401 was one of the victims with this issue and managed to fix this issue with a interesting solution:
Wow, I'm up and running! Weird fix though...
I installed the toolkit and downloaded the ROM, and was attempting to get into fast boot manually because trying to do it during the unlocking process in the toolkit wouldn't work. I thought I remembered the buttons for getting into fast boot from my old Gnex as being "hold power and volume up at same time". I tried this, and the phone went to the white "Google" logo and then vibrated, and then screen went black and the LED notifier at the bottom of the phone glowed red for about 2 seconds. The phone then rebooted, about 10x faster than before might I add, and when I was booted up I saw "No SIM detected... emergency calls only". This would infer my SIM slot was finally being detected, whereas before even with no SIM inserted I just got "No Internet Connection".
I popped my SIM in, rebooted, and the network is connected. Time to review 5 days of missed texts. Thanks for the hand!
tl;dr --> Anybody having this problem, try turning it off, and then turning it back on with the SIM inserted, holding POWER + VOL UP til it does this hard reset type fucntion. When rebooted, the problem should be resolved.

Q: I have to reenter my pin code for my sim every time, what do I do?
A: @lucker#1 you guessed it has the same issue has well but he wasn't the OP of the thread that the issue was discussed in but he did sure find a fix, the following is a quote from his post:
i've also had that issue the second day after receiving the phone. I removed the sim, put it back in but that didn't help - i looked at my sim card tray and i realized that a one side of the sim card chip was close to one metal side of the tray and i figured that could be the issue - so what i did is i took a stripe of adhesive tape and made sure they wouldn't touch - I haven't had the issue again and it's been more than 2 weeks.

Q: Since I installed Android 4.3 a few of my apps are force closing, what should I do?
A: You have to reinstall that application to fix the issue.
Q: I am getting screen flickering.
A: Flash the correct kernel which supports your Android build and version.
Q: Got a kernel panic, HALP!!!
A: That is pretty rare for the kernel to panic but you can actually easily trigger it, to fix it you must reflash the kernel (make sure it is the correct one!).
Q: Since Android 4.3 on YouTube using Slimport there is a blue graphical glitch, why is it doing that and how to fix it?
A: Since Android 4.3 there is some major bugs, improvements and fixes and the graphical glitch (I got this myself) is due to the new Software Encoder, there is no fix yet but you can go around it by using VPlayer as it apparently supports YouTube videos and it has Hardware Encoding.
If you have any questions and answers please post them here.

[Q] SGS4 WiFi/Bluetooth Death, ZERO working solutions, willing to pay.

Hi everyone, I'll try to keep this as concise and clear as possible. Thanks in advanced for reading this.
Phone: SGS4
Running: Android 4.3
Carrier: Bell Canada
Rooted: No
Rom: Stock TouchWiz.
Problem: The phone will not turn on WiFi or Bluetooth. If you attempt to switch either on, it remains a dim green for a few seconds and then turns back off shortly after.
Solutions tried:
(a) Battery pull.
- Unsuccessful. (At first, if battery pulled during Samsung logo animation after restarting from ON state, both WiFi/Bluetooth would turn on again, sometimes for minutes, sometimes hours. Eventually, this stopped working. It would only work on a restart pulling the battery during the animation, never at any other time)
(b) Update to latest firmware through Samsung Kies.
- Unsuccessful.
(c) Boot into safe mode to see if any applications were the cause.
- Unsuccessful.
(d) Wipe device clean and start fresh.
- Unsuccessful.
(e) Change WiFi power saving state to off through *#0011# menu.
- Unsuccessful.
I have not tried loading other roms or kernels.
A quick google search shows that many people have the same problem, I have yet to find a working solution. If anyone here can point me in the right direction, I'm willing to pay at this point. I cannot return it to Samsung as there is a crack on the screen which has voided the warranty. I could fix the screen and try sending it in but I'm hoping for a software solution.
I feel as if it is not a hardware issue as the battery pulls worked initially.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Once again, I'm willing to pay for a working solution, the number is up to you as long as it is reasonable.

When you say wipe device clean, how did you do that? Did you use ODIN and flash the firmware or just do a factory reset?

I did not use ODIN, I did a simple factory reset. I will try that ASAP and post an update. If there any other solutions as well, I would really appreciate them in case that does not do the trick.
Thank you for your response DeadlySin, it is greatly appreciated.

Just try that first, as doing a factory reset does not actually change the system files but rather wipes all userdata. Just use the file for whatever firmware you have in the I337m firmwares thread.
DeadlySin9,
I finally got around to using odin to reset the firmware, first to stock 4.3 from my carrier, then 4.2, both of which still failed to change the state of the problem. At this point, it seems like an obvious hardware problem but if that was true, I still can't understand why I could re-initiate WiFi/Bluetooth after a specific pattern of battery pulls (this does not work anymore but worked for awhile, stopped, then started again, now finally stopped). Any last ideas? I really appreciate your help.

I don't know why that would work. At this point I'm not sure what else you could do. I know I used to have WiFi issues after some flashes with my Inspire but i never really had a fix even then.
i had issues enabling wifi after installing a custom kernel & with certain roms (same 1/2 lit green toggle crap, sometimes it would toggle back off sometimes it would just stay 1/2 lit and make my phone burn)
my solution has been 100% working for myself so far, if you'd like to try it here's the directions
1. install es file explorer
2. set root permissions AND mount as writable, within es file explorer
3. use es file explorer to navigate to the root of your phone (system directory, i think) and open the build.prop file than select the es file editor
4. find the line that says ro.securestorage.support=true and edit it to false, save and close
5. reboot phone, and hopfully you have no more wifi issues
i was skeptical when i first did this because nothing worked to fix my wifi, but this works 100% for me on every rom
Been there, done that.
It's not a hardware problem. It is, I believe, problems with the restrictive 4.3 update not playing nicely with some system settings. In short your system drivers or configuration settings are getting messed up to to bugs in how Knox and the bootloader are interacting with the modem.
I had your exact symptoms after installing certain custom ROMs, also noted that the problem could be temporarily "fixed" if the boot process was interrupted or by specific sequences of modem changes. The situation is not helped by Bell being more restrictive than other Canadian carriers e.g. Rogers, something that also caused me problems when I was enabling AWS on a Bell firmware.
The effective solution was to install a custom recovery to facilitate a complete wipe of files, then flash a Rogers stock image. Cured. And continuing to work properly if subsequently returned to a Bell stock image. Although, frankly you'd have a more stable and flexible platform if you you kept the Rogers image in the end. If the build properties edit doesn't solve your issue, then here is a path for you to pursue.

I have the exact same problem - I'm on US AT&T, I337UCUAMF3, Android 4.2.2 and this solution looks promising. I followed the steps and have RW set up, but ro.securestorage.support does not exist in my build.prop file. Does anyone know if this property is specific to certain builds and/or if there is an equivalent property?

Adding it to the end shouldn't hurt as long as you make sure you set properties on the build.prop

Thanks for the tip, good to know it wouldn't screw anything up. I did add it to the build.prop file, rebooted and it seems to have had no effect. Seems that if the property is not present in the file, adding it does not resolve the problem.
Editing build.prop is a plausible workaround if the OP has root access. If he doesn't wish to root his phone, then he can clean up his system configuration by reinstalling as I described earlier in the thread without requiring root. Two approaches to the same result.
And yes, you can add the entry if it doesn't already exist in your configuration.

UPDATE: I didn't have any luck using the build.prop fix, nor with the wpa_supplicant.conf fix that some of you may have seen mentioned. I ended up Recovering to stock MF3, (I was already on MF3). This gave up my root access, and I didn't take any additional steps to hide busy_box or anything like that, after my MF3 recovery it looked like I was safely unrooted and I contacted AT&T support via web-chat, and they asked some questions and sent me to a nearby AT&T device center. I took it there, they didn't ask a single question about how it happened, whether I had rooted it, etc(although I was paranoid that there would be traces left behind and they would turn me away). Long story short, they replaced the phone no questions asked!
In my opinion it would seem that while this problem could in some cases be caused by rooting and tinkering, it's enough of a known issue to AT&T that they would replace it under warranty. Hopefully Bell or other carriers would do the same. My advice is to try your carrier, particularly if you are with AT&T.
Just to help people who are searching for a solution. I had flashed a T-Mobile rom and my wifi stopped being togglable on my AT&T S4. That is, I couldn't turn on wifi. The button would get stuck on. After trying to flash what I thought was the right MK2 modem and still having the same issue, I thought I was out of luck. However, I found this one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=3275 and hit paydirt. Flashing it using Safestrap and then wiping cache and delvik worked. The file is called jflteatt-MK2-modules.zip.
Only for WIFI, for me what worked was I had to open a litte bit the one side of the phone and close it again (removing a little the plastic, like if you were going to open the device) Wifi started working again, no need to flash any roms, it seemed to be something related with pressure, humidity or something inside the phone.
Regarding bluetooh I had no luck still not working, only keeps saying activating and never gets activated.
does anyone find a solution for this yet?
I have had the same issue for months. Started after warranty was up. I have AT&T on nc1. I tried everything mentioned here but nothing worked. Even left it with the phone repair guys for a week with no luck. It first started after I flashed Hyperdrive ROM. A reboot helped for a while. It actually came back for a week on Kevp's ROM, but then had an error that reboot the phone and lost it again. Phone is now on Craigslist and I am back to my S2. On a high note it's nice to not have a unlocked bootloader again.
you need to flash the exact same model/firmware's modem file atleast thrice before giving up.... i have a simalar issue the thing is my model number is 1377z and google doesnt have a working flashable modem file for it so basically i am screwed too wifi calling and video recording doesnt work....
update :: saw that you got it replaced !!

[Q] Help. Please. Rooted s4 to custom ro

Hello,
I recently rooted my sgs4 gt-i9505 to the goolge edition using a YoTube tutorial on how to do so. Everything worked fine at the start but when I tried to install the PAC man rom, it jus stayed in the loading screen.
I restarted and tried rebooting but to no avail. I went back into the recovery mode and wiped the phone (divlac, cashes and system) then I reinstalled the google rom to find my wifi was not working. I tried the same process again, wipe- reinstall. Now I can't receive calls, the wifi doesn't work, home button only works on double tap, pull down status bar works but nothing in displayed.
My question is, does anyone have any ideas on how I would return my device to normal or know a full proof recovery and rom I can use that will correct these problems.
I am in the UK if that makes any difference.
Thanks for all and any help.

You could try to go back to stock and check if everything still works there.
Did you flash the correct modem/baseband for the ROM / your carrier? There is a thread in general for all the modems. Chances are with a KitKat ROM you need to update your modem. Read that thread and give it a go. The file is about 15mb and takes a minute to flash in Odin. Failing that go back to stock.
Nothing in status bar: that's what it looks like in stock, you can use 2 fingers for the quick settins. Installl WANAM XPOSED fromwork for more tweaks and options!!
Home button double tap: that's the way it works on the google edition, that's just it. BUT wanam xposed can change this with the Gravity Box module!! You could try the Echoe 2.2 kitkat rom it has xposed pre-installed.
Keep in mind things look blanker and less functional as you no longer have samsung touchwiz which adds a LOT of stuff to the stock experience!
One more thing: ALWAYS make a nandroid backup before flashing ANYTHING at all, you never know when you will need it. Backup the nandroid to your PC also just in case, things go missing/ get deleted! T

[Q] Advice Please - Mobile Odin - Could not detect device model - USB not recognizing

Hi all, hoping to get some advice in regards to a brick wall I've hit.
So background, my Galaxy S4 (i9505 running 4.2.2) has had ongoing USB recognition issues and thus I haven't been able to upgrade to a custom rom for a while. After following a couple of very detailed and useful guides on here, without success I had decided that it was likely one of two things:
A hardware problem (I have a third party charging port installed after the OEM stopped working)
Or when I was playing around with settings I derped and uninstalled the MTP application or some related core service.
So I left it for a while but today I decided to do something about it and discovered Mobile Odin (4.20), bought it and clean flashed SlimKat 4.4.4 (http%www%slimroms%net/index.php/downloads/dlsearch/viewcategory/1182-jflte). Took a while but the rom booted, really liked the look and I tried to install 3rd party apps and set up phone as usual but noticed that Google Play Store was missing. Manually installed V4.9 but it kept opening and closing so I uninstalled and the flashed the normal gapps and the AIO gapps through Mobile Odin (with and without clear cache), both processed OK but upon reboot none of apps ever installed.
So I decided to re-flash the SlimKat, I had to re download as I performed a factory restore in amongst things and had the original rom stored on internal. When I flashed inject root was checked as were all the other default options but upon reboot Mobile Odin is giving me "Could not detect device model" which after looking around basically means I lost root .
So my questions are: Without connecting via USB (because it's still not working) what are my options for flashing another rom or regaining root? Is there a way to get to stock 4.4.4 without USB?
Really appreciate any advice, currently the phone has network service and WiFi so in the mean time, without Google Play store it is just a significant inconvenience, but still operational.
Regards,
Marc

I don't know how but my root has been restored while I was playing around clearing app cache's etc. So now I have SlimKat 4.4.4 but unfortunately still no Google services/Store etc. When I manually install it, it has this issue where it automatically opens and then closes, so still working on fixing that. Again appreciate any input.
Hello, I've been flashing ROMs for a while now and I can't think of a way to regain root from within the ROM itself. How did you get root on your device in the first place to install mobile odin?
I have never used a play store application for any type of flashing, was never sure if it would be reliable or not. That being said, have you installed a custom recovery into your phone whilst you were playing around with it? If you did then you can fix this without fixing your USB connection.
However if you still have stock recovery, you probably need a USB connection to regain root. If that is the case, what have you actually tried to fix the USB problem?

Hey @lichking21st. Mobile Odin is allegedly just odin without the need for USB. I have tried to fix the USB to no avail
Actually just about to update my original post, I don't know how but my root has been restored while I was playing around clearing app cache's etc. So now I have SlimKat but unfortunately still no Google services/Store etc. When I manually install it, it has this issue where it automatically opens and then closes, so still working on fixing that. Problems solved!
Clean flashed stock rom then clean flashed back to SlimKat. Google play and root carried over.
USB still not working have to put it down to a hardware issue now. Oh well, so happy
@MOD you can close this. Thanks again for the help LichKing

Glad to see your problem is fixed, I would still advise you to get a custom recovery so you have some options if you really get stuck without root for next time. I recommend using TWRP but CWM works too.
