Root Sprint S5....Step-by-Step - Sprint Galaxy S 5 General

Root Sprint S5 step-by-step....the following is for the Sprint SM-G900P (S5) and SM-860P (Sport S5) Updated 10/20/2014
*The SM-G900P method has been confirmed to work on the Virgin Mobile branded S5. However, do this at your own risk*
-----> If you would rather watch a video of how to root the S5 check out qbking77's here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52587088&postcount=1
Please thank the owners of the threads in the links for the work put in to post the necessary files to obtain root/hotspot
**As always, I am not responsible for anything that happens to your device. Just follow the easy steps and all will be good.**
*Before you proceed, if you have not taken the official ND2 or NE5 update from Sammy yet and want to then do that now. It is easier to do the update before obtaining root.
STEP 1 - DRIVERS
Download the Samsung S5 driver and install on your Windows PC: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SM-G900PZKASPR
--->If you are using Linux no additional driver download is required.<---
After you install the drivers, plug in your phone to the PC and make sure it detects your device and loads the drivers properly. Should be able to access your storage. If not, don't proceed because chances are Odin will not recognize the device either. If this happens, try a different usb port, re-booting PC, cable, etc.
STEP 2 - OBTAIN ROOT SM-G900P (S5)
**Disclaimer.....using CF Auto Root method will trip the Knox counter and can not be undone. This will void the warranty on your device. Towelroot method in itself does not trip the Knox counter.**
There are 2 options for root. Pick whichever you are more comfortable with (my preference is towelroot because it is a faster and safer one click method):
Option 1: **According to the latest info from towelroot thread, this will only work with Kernels dated prior to June 3rd, 2014. May work on newer but chances are not good due to Google supposedly patching the exploit.**
This can be done without the use of a PC. Go HERE, click the symbol, and download the towelroot apk.
After download, install and run. Then, go to Play Store and download/install SuperSU. Run to update binary. Done.
---->For More Adventurous Users....if you want to utilize mod strings for towelroot, install recovery without a PC using Mobile Odin, etc. see HERE Courtesy of fergie716
Option 2: Download Chainfire's S5 Autoroot (Odin included in package): http://download.chainfire.eu/408/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-kltespr-kltespr-smg900p.zip
Then go here and just follow the steps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51421067&postcount=2
STEP 2 - OBTAIN ROOT SM-G860P (Sport S5)
**Disclaimer.....using the following method to root (currently the only available) will trip the Knox counter and can not be undone. This will void the warranty on your device.**
Download Chainfire's Sport S5 Autoroot (Odin included in package): http://download.chainfire.eu/460/CF-...ts-smg860p.zip
Then go here and just follow the steps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51421067&postcount=2
STEP 3 - CUSTOM RECOVERY SM-G900P (S5)
**Disclaimer.....flashing a custom recovery will trip the Knox counter and can not be undone. This will void the warranty on your device.**
Download the latest PhilZ CWM Advanced Touch .tar.md5 file (custom recovery): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2706253
Take this .tar.md5 file and put in your Odin folder. If you don't have Odin yet then download from here: forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1168421
Then just follow the Odin directions on this page under "How to install with Odin". Just remember you are installing PhilZ and not TWRP but steps are still the same: [url]http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51450356&postcount=1[/URL]
STEP 3 - CUSTOM RECOVERY SM-G860P (Sport S5)
**Disclaimer.....flashing a custom recovery will trip the Knox counter and can not be undone. This will void the warranty on your device.**
Download the modified CWM recovery here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-galaxy-s5/development/recovery-cwm-s5-sport-sm-g680p-t2907945
STEP 4 - NANDROID BACKUP
Don't skip----> Now that you have root and a custom recovery, first thing you should do is make a backup in recovery just in case something goes wrong in the future. (hold press Vol Up + Home + Power when powered off to boot into recovery) **I strongly recommend that you backup EFS as well. Keep the backup in a safe place afterwards** Or, you can go HERE, download the tool, and backup EFS with the app. Make sure you have Busybox installed first and put the produced backup in a safe place such as PC hard drive, cloud storage, etc.
Optional:
Now that you are rooted what is a flashaholic to do?
For a comprehensive list of mods, roms, and add-ons click here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52456762&postcount=1
Done. Flash away.

I would post this over in the CF-AutoRoot thread. If there isn't one yet you can make a request. See post #3 for current model compatibility: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2696537

The new Virgin S5 appears to be the "same" as the Sprint S5:
Model: SM-G900P
Firmware: G900PVPU1AND2
That having been said... I'd rather not be the first to confirm the Sprint root method works on Virgin as-is. :cyclops:

Okay...
The Sprint root DOES indeed work on the VM phone.
No problems. Same model. Same firmware.

Download links dead

I just clicked them, they all worked fine. Maybe clear your cache on your browser

In order to root you have to have cwm, which is custom recovery. OTA upgrades flash through stock recovery only, so no, it will fail if you try to accept it. You have to be 100% stock to take ota upgrades

Emoji trouble
After rooting my s5 my emojis no longer go through. People recieve them as black squares w/ questions marks and vice versa. Anyone else experience this?

I would think not. KK is the latest thing out, and I haven't heard anything in the tea leaves about an update to the S5.
Edit: I stand corrected. Looks like there may be something on the horizon.

[Beginners Guide]How to root Samsung Galaxy Note 2

Hello XDA,
I know there are lot of guides on how to root the Galaxy Note 2,but unfortunately I have not seen a guide that is clear enough to beginners that know nothing about Android. So, after hard work I have done a guide on how to root the Samsung Galaxy note 2 and put it in your hands.
Note:I Have Also Made A Picture Full Guide So, IF This Guide Wasn't Clear For You, You Can Go HERE
Introduction:
Today, I will guide you on how you can root your Samsung Galaxy Note 2.This method is the most easiest, safest and the fastest method up to date. To start off, the method will take little time but it’s more guaranteed to work on any Galaxy Note 2.
Disclaimer:
I’m not responsible if something went wrong on your phone(Usually nothing goes wrong), you’re doing this on your own responsibility. Rooting your phone will void your warranty so don’t root your device unless you know what you are doing. To know more about rooting check What is rooting and it’s top 10 benefits.
Method: Rooting using Odin: [Recommended]
This method works for almost all Galaxy Note 2s,and it will only root and install busybox.
All credits go for Chainfire for making the CF-autoroot make a look at the Original Thread
Requirements:
1-Download these files:
1-CF-Autoroot Depending on your model number which could be found in Setting-> About Phone:
A) For N7100 Model go HERE.
B) For N7105 Model go HERE.
C) SHV-E250K Model go HERE.
D) SHV-E250L Model go HERE.
E) SHV-E250S Model go HERE.
F) SPH-L900 Model go HERE
G) SGH-I317 Model go HERE
H) SGH-I317M Model go HERE
I) SGH-T889 (T-Mobile version) Model go HERE
IF you didn't see your model number above don't try this method because it might brick your phone.
2-Odin 3.07 From HERE.
3-Samsung USB Drivers from HERE and then install them.
4-Make sure to fully backup your device.Check our post on How to Backup Every Android Mobile Phone.
5-Make sure to backup your EFS file immediately after rooting your device.
Step1:Extract the CF-Autoroot until you got a file with .tar.md5
Step2: Extract odin307.zip then run Odin3 v3.07 as administrator.
Step3:Shutdown your Note 2 completely. Then, hold down the volume down button+ the home button then press the power button for 5 seconds, after you will see a warning screen just press volume up.
Step4: Now click on “PDA” and choose the .tar.md5 file we downloaded earlier. Then connect the USB cable to your computer then to your Galaxy Note 2. Now Click on “Start”.
Step5: Once it successfully finishes you will see “Pass” in the above table of the “ID:COM”
* In Some cases Knox disabled SuperSu to work probably. So,if SuperSU wasn’t working probably for you.Download the latest version of SuperSU from the Play Store. Then on launch it will ask you to disable Knox and you should accept.Hope that solve it.
Conclusion:
That's it! Easily rooted. to unroot your device and reclaim your warranty visit How to Un-root Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

Well maybe for you but trust me a lot of people find ketan's guide is hard....am talking about the beginners that doesn't know what CWM is..!!
Am I right?
Thank you for this. I'll attempt to root my Note 2 in a couple of weeks so this is certainly appreciated.
Is this the latest method to root? All I want to do is gain root so I can use apps like titanium backup, ad away, cerburus and maybe tasker.
Can I just gain root and use all of those while sticking to the stock rom? And also can i still get the phone repaired under warranty should it develop any faults later on?
Very straight forward instructions, thanks!
One question, which method is preferred? I see Method 2 is 'Recommended' -- why is it then not Method 1?
Is there any downside to either method? From a stock rom, which would you say is the 'slickest' method?
Thanks!!

Hopefully these methods are the latest. And yes you can root and stick to the stock rom,for that I advise you to follow method 2.And when you root your galaxy note 2 your warrenty is void so you should before going to Samsung Service Center to uninstall all root apps and unroot your device.

Method 2 of course because it will only root your phone and keep it as stock as possible (CF-Autoroot)unlike method 2 that will either flash a pre-rooted sytem image or root the phone using CWM (custom recovery)which is for some people is better since they want to root and install ClockWorkMod recovery. But,I think method 2 is recommended because it has less disadvantages and keeps your phone as stock as possible.

Who NEeds Help To get to KitKat?
If you are already Rooted..... Go here to Civ.'s thread and you can flash his rom and get the Kernel while you are there.
All of the instructions are in the threads. They are as close to perfect as we can get.
**as of 6/18/2014 after flashing I would keep checking back until you see that the issues are all resolved and pay attention tothe threads and read, read read, read them and make a back up before you do anything....
Good Luck With Kit Kat!!!
If you are not currently rooted, please send me a note or make a post and we can figure out where you are and what you can do to get rooted.
Please Make Sure that you know what your firmware is BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING LISTED BELOW!! basically, you need to know what you are doing before you start.
We have KitKat OTA out there so if you use any of the Jelly Bean Stuff you can BRICK your device.. Take HEED!!!!
First and foremost I take No responsibility for anything that happens to your Tablet, Phone. Rooting will invalidate you warranty, so do so at your own Risk. If you make a brick, paper weight or anything else out of your phone, Tablet, Phablet, I take NO responsibility.
I take NO credit for anything that has been developed, I am simply putting things in one place for all of us to find easier.
Jelly Bean Stuff Only Below!!!! Make sure that you know what version Rom you are on!!!!
(Have you taken Heed?)
Take a Stock ROM and Make it Customized...!:silly:
If you are new here, This is a nice Glossary of Terms put up by droidstyle and created by Jawman27 , Big thanks to them for setting this up...
Most everything I have found is pretty east to do for even the most novice of users. There are a few things that will cause anxiety, but what I have found it that most of the dev's are really good at listing instructions on how to use the magic they have so freely given. Read, Read and Read again till you understand the instructions...!
If you don't understand ask questions in the OP's thread and I am sure that the dev or others in the thread will give you sound advice and clear up any misconceptions. If you ask your questions here I will do my best to answer, but you are always going to find the most relevant information in the Thread of the OP. This is a Thread for you to see what is available out in the world...
With that being said I am setting up this thread here in this forum because there are slim pickins around here and we have a ton of stuff available to use that most are not aware of in the Galaxy Note 8 world. Some of what I have found that works here on the Note 8 (5110) I found in Other forums for other devices. Lot's of things are Compatible, some are not. Remember to choose wisely if you did not see it here in this thread and you don't know if it works.
I can only speak to the GT-N5110 because I own this device. Once others with Other Devices post with success stories then I can say that this will work with them.
If you found something that works that didn't come from the Galaxy Note 8 Forum, Post it and give a little instruction on what you have done that might differ from the OP from which it came. If it does come from this neck of the woods then post it with a link to the op and I will incorporate it in the the OP if it makes since.
Please don't rewrite the instructions here, If you are not the developer then let them speak for themselves. Post a link to the OP
Everything I post here in the OP I have tried and have succeeded in doing... Please if you succeed then post we want to here about success and if you have a failure so we can look at what happened and make sure that I/we all understand what is going on...
And we're off! ( Please note that these lists are never complete. this is a work in progress, so if you find something add it so we all can benefit from it. )
ROOT
How to Root your new device.
This is what I used initially...
I used Chainfire's thread located here in the Galaxy Note 8 Original Android Development Section. Chainfire is the Man, many props for all of his hard work. Buy his apps if you use them and like them... I did!
We also have mskip Galaxy Note 8 Toolbox. I use this applicaiton. I paid for the premium version because it is a way to give back to these guys for their hard work. If you use it and love it pay for it... (I did.)
Take a look, read the OP, re-read the OP and when you get back let us know how you did, what you did when you did it...
**New Update 8/6 Here is a New Root Process for the GT-N5120. This was put together by Slipurson. Check out his post. This was done with a Windows 8.1 PC with out running in compatibility mode, so keep that in mind if you are using a different version. This will be for GT-N5120 the LTE version only. Big thanks to Slipurson for your work on this!
Follow Directions carefully and you will come out with a rooted device!
UNROOT
I found out a few things about the process when you UNroot. I just had to unroot my Note 8 and put it back to bone stock...
Now If you have to do this, I would suggest going to SuperSU > Settings > Uninstall for UNRoot. If you do not do this and use Odin to flash back to a completely stock Rom. you might get your self into a bootloop... Not a tasty cereal, just a frustrating issue that will cause some slight irritation...
If you find yourself in a boot loop after doing what I just suggested not to do then You will want to flash Chainfire's CF AutoRoot. If you have any questions, please hit me up first before you make a brick!
Here is the only method that I have found so far. Big thanks to janjannsen99 for getting this together. THis will take you back to the original version 4.1.2. As soon as we get the next release 4.2.2 I will post a link to it.
** Note** If you need help above and beyond what is in janjannsen99 thread, post it up and I will see what we can accomplish...
Recoveries I back up after I back up and then I back up twice! (credit 2 Sublime)
Look in the Original Android Development you have a few to choose from.
Some like TWRP some like CWM. It is wise to have access to both, some roms or other flashables may be dependent on which recovery that you use. So remember to read the OP and the thread of what you are about to flash and see if there is a mention about it. If no mention then I wouldn't worry to much about it. Just as a rule of thumb make sure you have a nandroid back up before you flash anything...
1. here is a link for TWRP. Thank you to emwno for his work on bringing this together. Please read the OP in his thread... I use this and have had no issues...
2. Go Here for CWM. Thank you to emwno for his work on bringing this together as well...
Stock ROMs~~
TW ROMs
1. JellyBeans from beanstown106 here For JB 4.2.2 N110 wifi only... CMG2..
This is a great solid stock ROM. I have found it to be very stable and it has taken well to the MODs that I have used on it. I have been follow beans on my other devices and I trust and can depend on the quality of his work. Now go grab it and read the OP so you know what you are getting...
2. JellyBeans Stock 4.1.2 ROM Here EMF1. I have not used this ROM, but if your into 4.1.2 then I would suggest giving this one a try...
CM 10.2 JB 4.3
I was able to get this installed on the GT-N5110 Using the TWRP recovery and with my 64gb card with exFat.
**Sorry about any confusion... You can try and use the CWM recovery, however if it does not work flash TWRP and try it. Have a copy of each Recovery (CWM and TWRP) on your internal storage just in case you have to flash your way out of there.
**Note, cm10.2 works good, however it is still a little buggy... so not suggested as a DD. Yet, Stay Tuned! The ROm recognized my 64gb exFat card, however it was acting wonkey with some apps so Be Advised! Just use your 32gb Fat32 sdcard and you will be jammin...
Goo.im just dropped a new version of Gapps for JB 4.3 You will need this for the CM 10.2 ROMS!!!!
1. CM 10.2 Jelly Bean 4.3... BIG Thanks to sbrissen for getting this up for us over here in Note 8 Land. This is a build for GT-N5110. Remember if you want to use any other of the apps mods or tweaks with it, Go to the OP for the MOD or thingy and make sure that it is compatible with JB 4.3
Kernels
I am on Stock for now. I am running JB 4.2.2 and I have not heard of any other than stock that do support exFat. (microSD 64gb native formatting)
MODS Don't Forget to Back Up
1. xposed framework This works well for this ROM.
** Go to the Downloads section from within the Xposed app and look through them for the Mods that are designed for TouchWiz Roms...
example, you open up app settings go to gmail, set the dpi to 160 & screen (dp): 1000x1600
I did this for System settings as well and they look nice. Play around with it and we can build on it...
** Note I have attached a disabler for the Xposed framework in case you get into a boot loop or something else that is awful... Just flash via Recovery and you should be well again...
1a. Within the xposed frame work, you can go to the download section. Look for XBlast tools and or Wanam Xposed mods. These will give you all of the freedom to tweak the UI with out having to flash any mods. I have this running on several devices and they are excellent.
2. Audio Mods
Go here for Viper Audio. this is sweet and it really pumps up the sound on your device... Read the instructions carefully and you will be fine... I installed the "XHiFi version v2.1.0.2:" version.. This is your processor option ("CortexA9/15 with NEON") when installing, I am not saying that my option is optimal, but it works well for me. Let me know if you give it a shot... update 8/4... I just added FX version as well. The 2 together are very nice... I highly suggest this if you like your music..
3.Floating Windows Note 8 Mode Switcher I love this little app. It is great, it give you Floating windows & a easy way to switch between tablet mode and phablet mode. It works very well and is super easy to install and get going. I highly recommend this application. jump on over and read the OP and get the floating multiwindows going!

3a. Multi-Window Manager so you can add all of the application you want to multi-window. If you like the application buy the Pro version. I did and I love it...
You also going to want to get a different launcher, look around the Play store and find one that you like. Most have a free version to try before you buy. I personally use Nova Pro... Go check it out, It is really smooth with the higher dpi setting you get from the Note 8 Mode switcher

You can do all kinds of stuff with this app, transfer files, rip apk's from your device, screen shots, activate camera remotely, explore it and let me know your findings. There is a paid subscription or free version.

I installed 4.2.2 (N5120XXCMG7) with the help of Mobile Odin,
But if you are on 4.1.2 and no Root this is how you get 4.2.2 and Root in just 34 easy steps
This will be for GT-N5120 the LTE version only.
READ THE WHOLE THING ONCE BEFORE YOU START!
Also thanks to Chainfire, Sammobile and Clockworkmod
All this was done with Windows 8.1, no compatibility-mode for Odin or anything like that
If you are already on a rooted 4.1.2, you could start at step 14. (or step 22 if you dont need to do a nand-backup)
00. Firstly download the firmware from Sammobile, this takes some time if you do not have an hotfileaccount so do this first
01. Download Chainfire's CF-Auto-Root-konalte-konaltexx-gtn5120.zip with included Odin (Here)
02. Download Clockworkmod's CWM Recovery (here) This will be used to make a backup of your Note 8.0
03. Download Odin 3.07 (from here)
04. Install Samsungs USB-drivers (found here)
05. Unpack the CF-Auto-Root-konalte-konaltexx-gtn5120.zip-file somewhere on your computer, so that you can find the files easily.
06. Turn off your Note 8 and start it with holding volume down and power to get to download mode.
07. Press Volume Up to get start download mode, and connect the USB-Cable to your computer, let the drivers install
08. Start Odin 1.85 from the folder where you extraced the CF-Auto-Root-konalte-konaltexx-gtn5120.zip.
09. When the Square at ID:COM say something like 0:[COM7] on a yellow background and Messagebox says ADDED!! you are good to go.
10. Click on the PDA button and browse for the file 5. CF-Auto-Root-konalte-konaltexx-gtn5120.tar.md5 (.md5 might not be visible to you)
11. Now click Start and wait for Odin to flash rooted kernel and reboot your device.
12. You now have a rooted 4.1.2-device
13. Close Odin on your computer
14. Shut down and start the Note in Download mode again (volume down and power, then volume up)
15. Unpack Odin3.07.zip to some good place on your computer
16. Start Odin 3.07 and connect your Note to the computer
17. Click the PDA button and choose the RecoveryCWM6.03.2-GT-N5120.tar-file you downloaded earlier.
18. Click Start and wait for Odin to flash recovery, then reboot your Note 8.0
19. Shut down and unplug the Note.
20. Start the Note into recoverymode by holding Volume Up and then pressing power until it boots,
21. Once in recovery, choose backup and restore and then backup to external SD-Card (if possible, else backup to internal)
22. When backup is done (might take some time), reboot the Note, go to playstore and buy Odin (there is a free version here on XDA)
23. Plug in the Note to the computer and unpack and copy the 4.2.2 firmware to SD-Card.
24. Optionally you could here install Titanium Backup or Helium to backup your apps and games since i suggest you wipe your data later. If you dont have any progress you want to save then you could skip this step.
25. Start Mobile Odin, accept root-permission and let it download the flashkernel.
26. When Mobile Odin is done downloading, select Open file..
27. Select external, browse to and select the 4.2.2 frimware (N5120XXCMG7)
28. I suggest that, if you do not live in the UK, touch the Modem-selection in Mobile Odin and choose Clear to not flash the new modem (for me LTE didnt work when i flashed the new modem)
29. Make sure Enable Everroot, Inject SuperUser and Inject Mobile odin are selected.
30. I suggest you also check Wipe Data/Cache and Wipe Dalvik also (this deletes all your data on the device)
31. Touch Flash and to make sure the downloaded file is correct, let it do the MD5-check
32. Let Mobile Odin work (will reboot twice) and you should soon be booted and get to do the setup of your new and improved Note 8.0 with 4.2.2 in all its Samsungy Glory
33. If you do not like the bloatware from samsung, just install Titanium Backup and Freeze any unwanted applications.
The backup we did earlier with CWM Recovery, needs a Working CWM for 4.2.2 incase you want to revert back to 4.1.2. I am not sure if the CWM-Recovery we downloaded earlier works with 4.2.2 as i havnt tested (i havnt done any backup even tho i tell everyone to do so).
Great idea and it will be very useful to me as I just got a new Note 8. Thanks very much.

I also just got my note 8, tried to do the framaroot root but it failed. I also noticed this morning that when I checked for an ota update the server wouldn't connect. Looks like the LTE version is getting 4.2.2 today. I want 4.2.2 an will wait for official. Then I am rooting an will post how etc here.
Oh will post if I update to 4.2.2 also.
I have mobile odin I bought with the 25 samsung gave, I will mess around with it once I get root (don't have pc) and see how it works for the note 8.0.
I use cromi on a transformer pad an would love to see it here. Can't wait to see what custom roms an mods/tweaks come out for the awesome tablet.

[Q] Need Help Updating AT&T S.Galaxy 4 V. 4.2.2 Rooted to Newest Version AT&T

Hey guys,
I ran a search but I don't understand half the things people are writing. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could please explain to me my options. In layman's terms, as I do not understand half the abbreviations and jargons here.
I rooted my phone over a year ago and really don't remember much about the process. I can't download important apps from Google Play anymore as they require newer versions than 4.2.2... So I'm stuck on this old version and need to update ASAP.
I have ONLY rooted the phone. I haven't done any mods or installed any ROMS. It's on stock AT&T Rom. (sometimes I wonder why I even bothered in the first place).
Can someone please point me in the right direction, I want a regular STOCK AT&T newest version, whether it stays rooted or not that's fine, but a newer version, KitKat preferably. What are my options? The simplest method would help me the most.
Things I really need backed up: My Text Messages, Voicemail, Call Logs, Whatsapp Messages etc. What is the best way to back that up? If I use Titanium Backup, and I don't have root after I update, Titanium Backup would be obsolete. So what would my other option?
Please help.
Much appreciated,
Are you sure you want to update from 4.2.2. You probably have the option to flash custom roms on your phone. There are many custom roms that that'll put 4.4.4 on your phone. Since you're rooted get terminal emulator from the play store. In it type
getprop ro.bootloader
If the last three characters are mdb or mdl you have a lot of options. I can help walk you through on how to get a custom rom on your phone.
You can update your firmware and bootloader to 4.4.4 too but you'll lose the option to flash most custom roms.

I'll be honest, I haven't really messed with any custom ROMS before. I just use the stock AT&T one. But I would like to upgrade to KitKat so my phone is faster and can download / upgrade the latest Apps. Lollipop isn't out for the AT&T Samsung S4 right?

No. My phone is rooted... Is it supposed to download to 4.4? And also couldn't there be issues with that?
I found this post. So I know this is ONE option: But I'll lose my Root. Which is fine if that's my only option.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2728462
As the OP says, I will lose ROOT. So my question would be, If I back up using Titanium Backup, how can I restore my backup if Titanium Backup works only on ROOT? This is very important.
@ jd1639 - He had mentioned there were several other options, so I will wait to hear them, and I can make a decision from there. Otherwise, I may have to fork out another $150 - $200 Bucks on a Samsung Galaxy S5 or S6. depending which suits my needs.
Many thanks for the replies!

You're on mf3 bootloader which doesn't really allow you to flash any roms anyway. You'd have to use safestrap.
What I'd do is flash the nb1 tar file in Odin. That'll update you to 4.4 and the device should then ota update itself from there. You will lose root, you can root it again if you want. See this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50912149

Thanks JD, do you know if this wipes my phone? In other words, does it factory reset my phone?
Yes Flash the NB1 Stock file as he said. But you are going to loose Root and any pictures etc. stored on phone memory, so copy them to your PC or SD card. I always like to take SD card out just in case when I flash just in case it may erase it. But after you flash NB1 Stock or the Stock Root it is like a phone and have to set it up. Then it should Update to 4.4.4 itself from the settings/ Software update. Good luck. Any problem let us now.
Ah cheers,
Last question: Do you recommend the First or second option?

It's possible to root even the 4.4.4. It just gets a little trickier to do it and you have to flash modules in Odin. In the general forum see "all things at&t....." by guut13

Yep I think you are correct. So if you want to root again use the Rootable to flash in Odin. Once you go from Jelly Bean to Kit Kat bootloaders are Locked for some .tar Same for Lollipop, they have not been able to root and unlock bootloader as yet. Just follow the steps and take your time and all will be good. Have done it several times on mine with Odin.
Hey guys, I just wanted to take the time and thank you both for the help. I finally updated today. After backing up all my data and making sure everything was safe to go. Bam! I did exactly as you suggested and had zero issues... I am now on 4.4.2
There were a couple hiccups along the way, but I figured them out without too much of a hassle.
Cheers again and best of luck to the both of you!

[Q]Want GPE, but can't get custom recovery - Help please! :(

Hey guys... Before I get into this, I would like to say that i'm very new to this whole rooting thing, so please forgive me for my lack of knowledge on various terms and such, and I'm a first time user here at xda.
What's written below might get a little bit complicated so i will try to make it as detailed as possible. Please bare with me here.
So I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 sgh-i337 (AT&T) running on android 4.4.4 (with touchwiz, you guys know the deal). I really wanted stock android lollipop, because I really like the look and feel to it. When I decided to root the phone, I went through many tutorials and I tried many different methods, and none of them worked. The phone still worked fine, but SuperSU was not installed and Root Checker said the phone was not rooted. After scouring the internet, I found one tutorial that had my S4 type and the same version. At that point I realized that my android version was hindering my rooting process. The tutorial used Odin to flash a kernel (NC1), root the phone using towelroot, install SuperSU, (Root Checker too to check if it worked), and then flashing the original kernel again (my original kernel was NJ4). After following this process, my phone was rooted, and everything worked fine.
As I said before, I wanted a GPE ROM, and so I needed a custom recovery. I decided to install CWM, since most GPE ROMs used this specific recovery. Again, I followed many different tutorials, and after each and every one, I would try to go into Recovery mode, and it would just launch the stock recovery. I found another tutorial on another website that involved flashing the recovery from an app in the google play store, so I decided to try it out. I now regret this as it led to more problems. I followed these instructions, and when launching into recovery mode from that point on, I get the yellow triangle with the error message "System software is not authorized by AT&T"
Sure, I could get around it by going into download mode from there, canceling, and it would reboot like normal, and the phone still worked, but I needed to get ride of that error message.
Once again doing my research, I figured out that if I flash a stock firmware specific to my phone, it will reset the phone (the only stock firmware available has android version 4.2.2, which is a really popular version, and is compatible with most custom recoveries and ROMs, so I decided to flash the firmware, as it would also change the version back, right?) When I flashed it using Odin like the directions said, it failed. i then figured out that it failed because my binary counter is not 0. I looked into resetting the binary counter for the AT&T S4, and I found Triangle Away. However, in order to reset your binary counter, you need an unlocked bootloader, and the AT&T S4 (sgh-i337) has a locked bootloader (I don't want to use Triangle Away if it's going to brick my phone, i'd rather unroot and keep touchwiz than brick). In the process of finding this out, I also figured out that the only custom recovery that you could use on a locked bootloader S4 sgh-i337 is SafeStrap. But i heard when using SafeStrap you are limited as far as ROMs go? Would I be able to get a GPE 5.0 Lollipop ROM with SafeStrap? Cause if not I might just unroot using SuperSU and software update my phone (will that fix the error when trying to get to Recovery mode?) Also, if I install Safestrap, will it fix the error message?
Again, sorry for my inexperience in all of this, and thanks for staying with me here. Any help and additional information on what I should do (or any GPE Lollipop ROMs I should use that are compatible with my phone and version and such), as well as any links to tutorials are greatly appreciated (also, keep in mind that all of the vocab I know when rooting is used in this post, I am not aware of most other terms - again, forgive me).
You wrote a lot but I'm not sure what state your device is in right now and what you want to do. But as you've found out, safestrap is the only custom recovery you can use. And touch wiz based roms are the only ones you can use. Afaik there are no 5.0 custom roms you can use at this time.

Oh, thanks for the help! The phone currently works fine, and it is rooted, but when I go into Recovery Mode it gives me the yellow triangle with the error... Will installing SafeStrap fix that? Regardless, thanks for the help, really do appreciate it!

Also, if i were to update the phone to the next version (i heard there is a way to bump the S4 up in android version) would that reset the error in Recovery Mode? And I also heard that with SafeStrap, you are limited to ROMs on the same android version as the one on your phone? I really like 5.0, but if it's not possible to get it as the moment (and I haven't found any 5.0 ROMs for the sgh-i337 yet - you were right) i might just unroot using SuperSU and just update my version, unrooted and all. I'd rather have my phone be nice and clean than to have root on it with a corrupted recovery mode, and not make use of the root at all (I've seen other ROMs and I prefer 5.0). I might just try to make the phone feel as close to stock as possible by using more google apps and such (keyboard, messages, etc.). Regardless, thanks for the help and additional input, really do appreciate it!

I would recommend you flash the nb1 tar file in Odin. That'll bring your device to like new. Then you can let it ota nj4. There are root methods for nc1 and nj4. See this

Root for SM-G530T1 (MetroPCS)? 5.1.1

Just switched to metropcs and got myself a SM-G530T1. I have searched for an hour for a working root to this rom... with no success. I also discovered there is no ODIN flashable firmware available for download.
I am aware there is a method that works by ODIN flashing the firmware of T-Mobile SM-G530T [AOF8] and then rooting with ShinySides [AOF8] kernal... but doing this removes some native functionality and adds t-mobile bloat ware.
So I am looking for either a working Temp root or Perm root for the SM-G530T1 [AOH9], Android 5.1.1, Baseband: G530T1UVU1AOH9.
And then I will be working on creating a ODIN flashable backup firmware of this version for others. Just need help with step one.. rooting.
Temp Root for Grand Prime
Use KingRoot. Worked like a charm for me....

so i bought this phone about 3 months ago (SM-G530T1) and i bricked it 3 days after i bought it by installing busybox un-rooted. still not sure how that happened but that is not the point, the point is i flashed the only stock firmware i could find (at the time) and it just so happened to be a mis-marked T-mobile firmware package. i didn't let it bother me though and continued to gain root and flashed ShinySides [AOF8]. It worked like a charm! I was just running T-mobile FW on a MetroPCS phone and it just got confusing if you have to call costomer service lol. so i made sure it worked in every way and removed all the bloatware. the only problem i had was with the hotspot feature, it had a mind of its own and that got annoying but i dont really use it that often so i could live with that. the phone was a champ! so i went to find a recovery or twrp. i was looking and found TWRP 2.8.7.0...it was not for the SM-G530T1 but it sorta worked and when i say sorta i mean it does pretty much everything you want it to do except BACK UP FILES! Lol! (at least for me anyways) so i ran that with the T-Mobile software for a few months until lastnight... see I didnt know about the failure to back up my files issue so you have to understand that i fully expected the TWRP Backup files to work and last night when i went to restore one of the BUps it informed me that i had no OS anymore !! oh man i wanted to puke! Upon further inspection i realized that it was only backing up about 20% of my system only and i should have noticed but i didn't expect that and that is how we learn the difference between knowledge and wisdom right? OK so at that point i had a bricked phone (MY DAILY DRIVER i might add) and i was not to happy to lose all my personal info either, so i went back on XDA to see what i could do. i was very pleased to see that there was now a working MetroPCS Package compliments of TSAR3000 and I went to work. I flashed it via Oden and was happy to see the familiar MetrPCS logo again, but i needed to re-root it so i used the ShinySides [AOF8] just to see if it would worked with the metro Firmware and it did! it trips KNOX but i could care less cause i dont want that crap anyways and i get rid of it right away lol. I debated if i sould put this next part in the message but i decided i would because people should be weary of programs and roots applications and remember that this is the true reason we root and unlock our phones to begin with... so Im not a paranoid person by nature but i dont trust King root or any of those one click apps companies because of some article i read a while back about how the Chinese root apps and downloads could possibly contain spyware but i never found any truth to it but from what i do know about the Chinese government i dont take the chance but its my opinion and i like the good old fashion (though a little more involved) flashing of SuperSU or whatever you like. So yes if you want to use ShinySides root procedure do it cause it works with metro just fine. Good luck.

Nice post. I tried using this method but got a fail in Odin: Received his msg on the phone: Custom binary blocked by frp lock. When i tried flashing ShinySides [AOF8]. Could you please advise how to bypass the FRP Lock.

Damn. So no real reliable root for the SM-G530T1 without using T-Mobile firmware?
I just bought it today assuming it would be as easy as all the other Samsungs I've owned in the past.
Just make sure your oem unlock is marked (YES) In developers options. This means your phone can be unlocked to flash firmware or recoveries and such... this is not to be confused with carrier unlocked though. This should help with the frp problem. as far as the "flashing of firmware through odin" the firmware that is available for the metropcs variant is designed to be odin flashable exclusively. If it isn't working than either you have an a faulty firmware package or a firmware pacage that I'm not aware of.

Reactivating an old thread, have there been any updates to the situation since the last post in 5/16? I need to root my G530T1. Is there a safe method?
I assume no replies mean there is still no safe way to root? Any other way to get rid of unwanted carrier and Google apps?

if you want to root it still just download SM-G530T1 A0H9 stock firmware ill send you the link if you need it, download stock firmware you have now for backup, download the stock firmware for the SM-G530T A0F8 and the root kernel for the SM-G530T here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/gr...l-root-root-sm-g530t-5-1-1-t3203476?nocache=1 you will also need the newest version of odin to do this. So first flash the A0H9 stock firmware and then the A0F8 firmware to change it to t-mobile and then that root kernel and you should be fine. If you run into any problems flash the stock firmware you had when you started.
Thanks for the reply. I managed to root the phone a couple of months ago but it did not do me that much good. I still can't delete the unwanted carrier and Google apps, and I can't get apps to download automatically to the SD card instead of the device. Is there any way to get rid of the bloatware?
