[Q] Former MyTouch 4G owner, SIM lock question - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm hoping there are still a few people around that can help me.
I got the MyTouch 4G shortly after it first came out. I loved that phone, but then after moving to Europe I found myself needing a phone for the service here so I sold mine on Ebay. My parents both got them as well and now that THEY've moved on to other phones, I've inherited them.
My questions...
1. I rooted these phones about 2 years ago, but I have no idea whether they're SIM unlocked. Is there a way that I can find out?
2. If they're not SIM unlocked, is there some way I can reroot them to be?
Thanks, guys.

Explain locked vs. unlocked

Hi. I'm new to these devices and have a question regarding the 2 phone options. I come from the iphone. I have a factory unlocked iphone that I use a tmobile sim in. I ordered the nexus one with the plan today. My question is are these phones like iphones where the one through tmobile is locked to tmobile. In my situation att sucks. I would never use them and do not plan on switching carriers. And these phones won't work on any other carriers until the spring. So, I like tmobile and went that route. My iphone takes any sim so I can hopefully swap the tmobile one out. If I am wrong please let me know. Anyway, are the tmobile ones locked to them so popping in a att sim won't work or is the phone not locked and they just want the contract?

If you bought the phone at $180 with the Tmobile plan then it is locked, meaning you can only use it with Tmobile. After a certain period of time though, you can call tmobile and ask to unlock your phone and they will walk you through it.
A locked phone means you can only use it on the carrier's service you bought the phone from. An unlocked phone is a phone you can use on any carrier.
Locked and unlocked phones have to do with GSM phones or phones that take SIM cards like Tmobile and ATT. Verizon and Sprint use CDMA phones, which do not have SIM cards.
When buying an unlocked phone, you need to make sure the phone will be compatible with your wireless service's 3G band or you will be stuck using their slower data offerings.
I found this out the hard way back when I bought an unlocked Nokia n95 with my Tmobile service. The Nokia n95 operates on ATT's 3G frequency and not Tmobiles...I had super slow internet on tmo's EDGE network. Fail.
If you do buy a phone from a carrier and it is locked, you can unlock it by calling the phone carrier and telling them you want to unlock your phone. Most carriers allow you to do that after you've had your phone for a certain period of time.
Thanks for the reply. Looks to be locked to tmobile which is fine for my situation. Sorry to be such a bother, but do you think it will work in my unlocked iphone then. I just want to be able to switch the sim between my N1 and iphone. Thanks again.

Yes. You WILL be able to switch between GSM phones
That makes more sense to me. Also, my question is answered now. I don't mind tmobile as they are the premiere carrier here. Att doesn't even have 3g here and tmobile does. So, I made the right choice then. I wouldn't ever use an unlocked N1 on att for that reason. Now if it will work in my iphone life will be grand. Just to put this out there. I have no favorite software or phone. I usually get what works for what I need. I have far too many apps on my iphone to give it up. Probably upwards of $500 worth. I literally run my business on it. I am just sick of the fact that this phone was $1000 and I can't even do anything to it. I am making my way the android for that reason. Once the apps I do need come available bye bye iphone. Thanks for the great forum everyone and all willing to help out with answers. Much appreciated.
BTW. Ever try getting and iphone unlocked from apple or att. It would be easier to root the droid eris. Wife has one and I'm waiting. LOL
no if you get it for 180$ its STILL UNLOCKED!

Never realized how controlling apple was until that comment melterX12. I'm getting a phone that is not locked on a plan I do want.
very true... hence the subsidized pricing and what not. the phone is unlocked which is why you have to pay more for it if you want to break your contract before the *so many days...
i'm pretty sure thats a good hint as to it coming unlocked through the t-mobile offer
All my past ppc's have been unlocked. It the best way, and it going to now (thanks to google) be the wave of the future in the States!

[Q] MT4G on the verizon network?

Ok 1st off I'm a noob, sorry if this question upsets anyone, I have looked and read a lot of threads. I have just switched carriers from Tmobile to Verizon. Before anyone gets upset I could not get service at my work on my Tmobile, and since we have a Verizon tower on site it pretty much what everyone uses. Well i'm trying to unlock me MT4G so I can use it with my verizon sim card. I have already rooted and simlock off via gfree. what my next step?

Umm... right.
Completely incompatible networks. Sorry.
There are plenty of nice Verizon Androids. If you don't like the Verizon phone you already have, trade the MT4G for a Verizon Android.
Next step: sell mt4g and get verizon compatible phone.

thanks guys that was what i thought just was hoping it wasn't the case. i picked up a new android today but was hoping to continue using my old one since it was fairly new as a back up. I have both the MT4G and 3Gslide from my old Tmobile acct.
Poor bastard. No wifi at work? Get a verizon mifi and use that with wifi calling. Ha!

[Q] Droid 2 No Plan?

I was walking my dog the day after St. Patty's and came across a Droid 2 phone. I called the last 3 people on the recent calls, left messages, and no response. So I figured I'd try to make this a testing/whateva phone.
My question is this....Can I actually use this phone with another carrier? Like Boost, or cricket? and how can I unlock it to do so. I just rooted the phone with no problem, but I would really like to unlock it.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You can get it flashed to cricket or google how to flash it yourself if you already have a cricket account.
Also DO NOT upgrade the firmware to .621 aka 2.3.4 or you will lose root forever!
/ is cricket the only possible provider? I've heard in the past sprint or att are possible options, and I've googled for months and still found nothing. Right now I'm on att with 2 infuse 4g's.. but I did buy a droid 2 and an x2 when I was with verizon...(sold the x2, to someone who got it unlocked). Any help from anyone would be huuugely appreciated..

If your Droid 2 is a Global you may get it unlocked to use AT&T. normal Droid 2 lacks a SIM card so only cricket/page one is all you can use outside of Verizon

HELP! 930P Working With Verizon SIM

Hey everyone. Sorry for the noob and the redundant question. I've combed through all of the 930P forums for an answer and my head is spinning in circles. Let's cut to it...
I have an unlocked S7 from sprint. My son has used it for about a year as a tablet using wifi. It has never been activated through sprint. I am a verizon customer and want to get a verizon SIM working with it so he can have a fully functional phone. I've read at least a dozen different threads on what to do, but don't want to brick the it. It shows 'Invalid SIM card' message when I put the verizon SIM card in it and the phone does not have any of the Samsung bloatware on it. Can anyone help or point me in a good direction, or would it be easier to sell it and find a Verizon variant? Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! I have a 7 year old who is BUGGING me about his phone.

Sounds like the phone isn't sim unlocked
I'm in the same boat. Sprint unlocked it and UICC says it's unlocked for any sim card, but the phone keeps saying it's roaming and the hands free message is constantly popping up.
Is there a firmware I can flash or a setting I can change to get this working properly on Verizon?
