LG must use thermal compound - G3 General

Guys, look at this
This is pathetic results for SD800. And the reason of so low bench results is absence of thermal pad on the SoC.
This was the case with first Nexus 4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/hardmod-nexus-4-investigating-thermal-t2144652, the same is with Nexus 5 http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...de-nexus-5s-throttling-solved-adding-t2627714 and the same goes to LGG2.
I mean, when I spend $600+ for expensive phone I want it perform better than competitors' ones, I mean Xperia Z1, Note 3, Xperia Z Ultra. I what my bang for the buck
What do you think? Would you buy G Pro 2 or LG G3 if they will lack thermal grease too?

Benchmarks mean nothing, the phone runs fine and quickly, games play fine at good frame rates, so its pointless doing this.
Transferring heat away from a components thats designed to handle it to a component that isnt is a bad idea. You may not think the screen is getting heated, but there a layers of very insulating glass between you and the LCD, you wont be aware just how warm it is. Heat affects LCDs, in time you might end up with a dark spot where the CPU is.

What exactly is the "bang for your buck" that you require? What does the G2 not do for you that the Note 3 or Z1 does that is so crucial to daily life?
Because if it is just benchmarks, then as mentioned above, they mean nothing.

the kk update killed the bench score, i think mine dropped like 10k.

Benchmarks are the worse thing to ever happen to android. You would think that the moto x with its "out of date" specs still running smoother then the s5 would prove once and for all that benchmark scores are pointless. I don't care if the note 3 or s5 put up record breaking omg wtf fml scores...it still lags and mine doesn't! Lol....

To add to this.... lets say you bought 2 cars. Both cost the same, one car says 700 hp, 0-60 in 3 seconds. The second car has 300 hp, 0-60 in 6 seconds. But once you get on the road, the 300 hp drives better, feels faster in every way and gets much better gas mileage. There's what's on paper, and there's real life.

i dont see it. my phone was snappy and fluid before the update, its the same now.
as for the benchmark comments. i agree to a degree that they dont mean a lot, but a 25-35% drop seems a bit extreme for an update.
seems like they boosted the benches to boost sales when it was new.

The fluidity and the battery are awesome. I love everything on that phone. Even if LG doesn't keep it updated it will still be one great phone that i own/ed...

I don't care bout benches, I care about what I paid for, and I use, as everyone else does, benches to prove that my item works as intended. Did you hear about lags when doing spherical panoramas? when phone overheats and process too long, longer than it must? It's the same story. Did you hear about "slow focus" in G2? Everybody did. Maybe it partly is because of early frequency drop, maybe not so.
And not only I care for benchmarks, look there http://blog.gsmarena.com/lg-g2-jelly-bean-vs-kitkat-benchmark-battle/

But you didn't pay for a device that guarantees you any particular score in artificially inflated benchmark tests though. No manufacturer will launch a device guaranteeing someone a set score all the time. So what is it that you think you should have that you haven't got now? I thin that is what we can't understand.

Man, I want it to not lag earlyer than do another smartphones. Did you hear of lags when playing Spiderman 2? I've heard that G2 is not capable of playing this recent new game smoothly, as device with SD800 should. OK I don't play Spiderman2 and did not by to play benchmarks, I only use benchmarks as examples that internally G2, Nexus 4, Nexus 5 do not constructed properly. And as I did http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2299888 when I complained of improper color temperatures of G Pro LG reacted and made G2 display perfectly calibrated and on par with HTC One and iPhone 5S. So I think that in future G3 they'll do something with SoC cooling and improve performance when gaming for long time

These things have nothing to do with benchmarks:
Did you hear about lags when doing spherical panoramas?Overheating can be many things, I have yet to find a phone that doesnt overheat sometimes. Usually a clean instal fixes this nicely. Its Android I guess and faulty install scenarios.
It's the same story. Did you hear about "slow focus" in G2? -> slow focus is the automatic focus, press on screen where you want focus and its almost instant. Google camera is pretty good. there are other settings that can tweak this.
That said, benchmarks in my opinion do nothing good for true user experience.
I do believe Android needs to step up on the user experience game as my comments above prove enough that this device, I say all android devices, need to much customization to be perfect. All these workarounds To fix these real issues that some users find anoying, not higher benchmarks are needed.

lol, and does kitkat score less in that? didnt see you post scores once with that nor found your arguments on it.Stop trolling yourself and post some proof then.
so my arguments from that standingpoint still hold.
I also couldnt find it featured on any major android website, wonder why.
the one benchmarktool I dont know, its only got 33 reviews, hardly antutu level. wonder if its representative.
This could be a benchmark that actually does measure some important stuff I am talking about. Interesting. thanks for sharing
omg the downloading is soo slow wow

ok ran the benchmark. but I am not impressed as it benchmarks with its own gui, not the actual phones gui. Also it doesnt benchmark the panorama shots or any camera shots for that matter.
I guess I wasnt wrong after all... sad was hoping big on this benchmarking tool to finally have a representative view of a gui from a user point of view.

People, so upsest with benchmarks, its not like its a gaming computer/server where you squeeze every bit of performance regardless of powerdraw etc, its a phone lol, and its smoother than before KitKat. Xperia Z is a good example of benchmarks vs sucking in real life ex horrible battery life....

Well, from the user point of view you should your Gallery scroll, Zoom scroll, list scroll results. The gallery scroll is what fubar in LG's UI. It scores around 35-37FPS, right? But on the Nexus it scores 50-55 fps or near. All other scrolls on LG are pretty near 60 fps, so as on every other smartphone and all right with them. But gallery scroll is bad. Did you use Tapatalk ever? Have you noticed when you try to swipe from right to left to open next page the tapatalk just stagger, hangs for .5sec, and then completes the move? It shouldn't, scroll must be buttery as is in HTC phones

OK, since you mentioned it I did that and got 2745 in HBOT Prime which is not too far off from the N5.
As for HTC I agree, since the One X days they have gone pretty far, they are probably best Android manufacturer at Battery/Performance optimization IMO, and Sony is the worst.
My HTC Butterfly (Int DNA) with 2000 mAh battery lasts longer than the Xperia Z (2330 mAh) per charge. Sony Exmor cameras in iPhone and Galaxy S4 perform better than the Z1. At least LG aren't like Sony.

So, well, at least it is for me to think over, is it something wrong with my unit or its just my latest ROM with knock code has bad optimization, and it will be improved in future. Or, maybe, my PVS of 3 has to do with too early heating of SoC than yours CPU. Maybe you have PVS of 0 or 1

The phone is coming out next month. Production has started already.
I don't blame the hardware though. The S4 Pro is powerful.
Most likely Sony screwed up the software.....
Also battery needed to be bigger.
Why in the love of god didn't Sony follow Samsung and use a bigger battery like the Note 2? :crying:

It's an S4 Pro with quad-core krait. Just like the Droid DNA and Nexus 4. Stop worrying about benchmarks, especially when it hasn't even been released. It will perform like every other S4 Pro phone, give or take a small margin.
The battery complaint is even more ridiculous. So many phones get updates on launch day fixing battery issues and they keep tweaking it with each update for months after release.
The biggest disappointment is the display. It looks exactly like a bigger version of the Xperia S/Ion/T with all the problems. Washed out look with poor viewing angles and contrast. Sony likes to turn up the brightness to mask the poor contrast. It's 2013. HTC doesn't even make displays and their SuperLCD IPS display is far and ahead the best. IPS displays on LG are also good as well as the one on the Lumia 920. Sony displays continue to disappoint.

The Ion has a pretty good display, dunno what you're talking about, many people agree with me. Probably one of the best out there.
I got the S which seems to have a pretty nice one as well, maybe almost the same as the Ion. The only washed out display that Sony produced this year on a high-end device is the one on the T. Over-saturated colors don't necessarily mean better displays.
The ION has the best display. Take a look at the thread in the Xperia T forums that compares the ION, T, and S in terms of display.

I never said anything about oversaturation being better. You are making assumptions that I prefer the blown out colors of AMOLED or the extra warmth of the SuperLCD. I mentioned the LG display looks better than the Sony one, and it is even LESS saturated than the Sony display. The point is Sony does not have a single IPS display on their phones. It is 100% agreed upon that IPS is the pinnacle of LCD technology and has been for years. Professional monitors from NEC, Dell, and HP use IPS panels. The colors and contrast do not shift when viewing off axis, and that is important for an even image, even when looking dead on. LG and HTC have been putting IPS displays on their phones for years now. Sony has no excuse. If you live in a bubble of Sony phones and never look at any other smartphone, I'm sure the display looks great. But there are plenty of reviews stating the obvious. The poor viewing angles are becoming increasingly unacceptable in a premium smartphone. The flaws are even more apparent on a small mobile display that you move around and use at different angles. It's not some nice monitor you prop in front of your desk and sit perfectly in front of.
Still way prettier and with far better UI than TouchWiz.

Yeah, well the Z can score higher than that -- and with XDA here, it's bound to go higher than 22.000
I don't know what Sony's game is, but why the onscreen buttons? That only takes away from the display! For some reason, only the GNex looks good with those, maybe because it doesn't have any extra buttons?
Anyways, I still think the best buttons were on the HTC Desire. You couldn't miss those.
About what I expected and not low at all for a stock device. You have to keep in mind most of the top scores on Antutu are with custom kernels and roms. As for battery I am not worried about it as it has not really been a issue with the newer Sony stuff.

Its an overkill because the screen is clearly affecting performance of the phone. It looks like the phone cant handle a screen with massive resolution. I dont know about you but I would rather have a phone with a full hd display rather than quad hd if it performs like a 2014 flagship rather than 2012 flagship. Sadly I'm thinking the 801 was a poor choice with that monster screen hopefully some patches can improve it

This is such a misguided statement. The LG G3 in no way struggles to power the QHD display nor does it struggle to power the Optimus overlay. Now, it would struggle to meet the same level of gaming performance when compared to a Snapdragon 800/1080p display.
But saying that it's struggling to push simple pixels on the screen is simply ignorant and starting to fall into circle jerk territory.
Thanks for sharing, I'm glad you feel important enough to go around the impressions thread and make your own thread on the G3 forum. go back to iphone, seems better suited for you. I experience none of what youre experiencing.
Mine runs buttery smooth all the time... The screen isnt affecting performance. I'd say any slowdowns are due to LG's software.

For a start it's using up 600mb of Ram for video much more than an HD screen, leaving only around 300-400 for apps. It's using more resources to produce the extra pixels leaving less for multitasking etc. You can see the dropped frames during animation transitions and feel the heat from it as it's working harder. I loved the phones design but I really couldn't take the lag, stutter and throttling after 2mins of use so that's why I returned it,it's really no big deal, if you like it then stick with it. I might try and get an S805 version when it's released.

LG Have Released This Phone Too Early

They have given us a phone that struggles to power the QHD screen. I played with the new Galaxy Tab yesterday and its the same, stutters and lags because of the crazy high resolution.
They have given us a phone that shutsdown I've no doubt because of component failure due to high temperatures and had the cheek to say its fixed with a reboot instead!
We get a phone with the old Xperia Z1 camera sensor rather than the new Z2 sensor.
In the UK we get a 2gb version so we get redraws all the time and apps shutting down in the background.
And what causes most of the of the problems?? A QHD screen which is barely any different to an HD screen is poorly calibrated and has a visible digitizer.
No amount of software updates will help this thing, most of the problems are hardware related.
Thanks LG,I'm now stuck with this pig phone for 2 years!
Updates and unlock bootloader will help us ...
desde un Lg g3
I somehow agree with you, good thing is, I returned my G3... ??
I only agree with the heat-issue, and thus I conclude, that it's very unprofessional of LG not to have applied any thermal-grease on the chipset. (From what I've read, there isn't any) hence this issue appears.
hate or love the qhd display now, in some months/years it will probably be standard on phones. And people will ask in that time,
"Hey which phone was the first to ship with qhd display? and did that go okay" you know looking back.
2gb vs 3gb performance is on pair.
Remember android o/s works wonder with 2 and 3 gb ram.
if you experience something sluggish on 2gb, chances are it's equally sluggish on 3gb
I experience only minor lag and it is not much just randomly.
I think the phone is great. Hey Moto X could root but wasn't permanent unless bootloader was unlocked or was able to see the write permission flag off so be happy with the root.
I feel people don't allow proper variance to smart phones.

I'd agree with most of the original post except the digitizer which I really couldnt see.

PS. The QHD display uses more RAM for video RAM 300mb HD Vs 600mb QHD so you need the extra RAM for QHD.
Lol at the G3 lagging. The Tab S lags because of Touchwiz.
Anything will have lag in it. Damn. Overheat issue... So no problems here with mine. Overall an awesome phone that does everything I want it to. Some of you guys expect holograms to pop out the phone lmao.

Use the 1080 flagships for a week or so and you'll see the difference. The G3 is a slow pig because its underpowered for a QHD.Even the new S805 G3 review says that smooths out the lag and stutter issues.
I haven't had any issues as most people complain about. Lag or excessive heat. I haven't experience any issues as of yet and i've had my phone for 2 weeks now.
D855 3/32gb
Lags: nothing annoying or particularly noticeable for me. Definitely no worse than my S4.
Shutdowns: I haven't had one. Had the phone for about 3 weeks.
Camera: Honestly, I don't use the camera much so I can't say too much. But it had been good for me.
Screen: looks good to me and no visible digitizer. Although, I must admit that I can't help but think it would be a slightly better phone with 1080p.
Overall I'm very happy with the phone. I was expecting to send it back after a trial, going from a lot of comments from here.but I've found most of the stated problems are non existent for myself. Very good phone imo

+1 on that. Had mine over a month now without a single issue.
This.
Are you sure that you people are not buying Chinese fake phones? I too have never experienced any lag, any heat (not more than any smartphone I've ever own and the s4 used to get really HOT) battery life around 6 hours SOT.
Jokes aside if you people are experiencing all these problems you should take your phone back for exchange or repair. It's definitely not normal.
To be honest it's the best android phone I've ever owned. I had the galaxy s, s3 and s4 .... I my original idea was to get the one plus one but it's impossible to get. After that one I don't think there's a better phone these days.

Same here. Always get these hate posts when new devices are released. Why don't people like the OP just return their devices? My G3 is fantastic and have had the Note 3 and M8.
It's funny watch people repeat like parrots that the 801/330 combo wasn't ready for qhd. Now the 805/440 is out and the benchmarks and performance is nearly identical to the 801/330. What now guys?

To be honest, benchmarks don't mean much. The review I posted yesterday said after a week of use the 805 as smoother and faster than the 801 although battery was the same.

I don't have any problems either on my G3 D855 32gb...
I don't experience those lags, screen problems and others...
We know it comes with QHD, we know the specs before buying it... I find it really funny that people complains about the QHD display after buying the G3, while they could have chosen to buy other phone without it.
I have many lags with my g3.

Anandtech Gives Mixed Review to Ascend Mate 7

Thoughts? I'm surprised they didn't mention having any light bleed problems on the left side by the SIM and microSD slots.
Well just one thing I will say that benchmark don't say anything how device behaves in real life !
I jst played mc5 and spiderman 2 and thor and I didnt notice a single lag and graphics were on par with my bro z2.
Only one major site has given such review so nothing much to worry about.

I think he is right on certain things, but on the other hand on his final conclusion he is not realistic.
The camera: yeah it is not as good as the high end phones of today, but it is a lot better then the phones that the mainstream buyers had.
CPU/GPU: CPU wise it performance at the same level as a snapdragon, or it comes close to it...
But that is in a benchmark, in real life and normal use you won't see the difference it all comes down to the software/launcher.
GPU is indeed a generation behind, it is clear as water.
Mainstream users or people that don't play a lot of games won't notice, and if they do play a game 80% is playing a 2D game to kill the time.
Hardcore gamers are indeed better of on a other phone if they plan to keep it for 2 years.
NAND that is a different story, I am not really familiar what that does with your performance in every day usage.
But the reviewer, and in other reviews to, stated that it not have a big impact of the normal usage.
So in the end, I think price wise it is a good deal for many people, the note 4 is in Holland a whopping 300 euro expensively than the mate 7

Wow, i just read the lengthy review of anandtech, and im quite surprised with all the neagatives the reviewer has mentioned -- CPU, GPU, NAND & battery life.
I was wondering if he was using an old and an unfinal version of the software in the mate 7. Although he answered that he was using the late october release, pretty much the latest one.
Bottom line is: as a regular user, i dont give a damn about benchmarks and measurements, as long as my actual experience with the device is awesome. And my experience with the mate 7 has been awesome!

Don't worry this phone is amazing I guarantee !!!
And this phone runs all games easily including asphalt 8, modern combat 5, spider man 2, thor and real racing 3. I'm telling you this because I had played these games smoothly on my phone which is 16Gb variant. And battery life is amazing.

The AM7 is a well built and great performing phone, all tasks are executed well. The camera is far better than this review says, so is batterylife. Daily usage is what matters, not benchmarks and other measurement. They have sold more than 1 mill of this one and the majority of buyers will never know or register the cons mentioned by Anand.
Stupid Anandtech. I am very happy with my device. The best I ever had. My battery never lasted a whole day, rather half day. Now I am enjoying it up to sleep time, still have remaining juice. I don't expect my phone camera to be DSLR camera. The camera quality is sufficient for me.
BTW which phone is perfect in this bloody review? He didn't show many phones in these benchmarks. Why? He deliberately wanted to undermine this lovely phone. Because he knows that people like it. That's it.

actually.. I find it a valid point.. But I guess it is typical chine design
No seriously without some one bringing it up you will most likely not noticed it...
But for me it is a problem when I try to connect the usb charging cable at night in dark... cause usually I try to find the middle point but the usb port is slightly to the left...not a deal breaker... it still does look better then most devices..

ူlol .... ok bro i feel you now bro
This review is shocking.
The truth is the camera is so good on stable shot but not on moving objects. The camera also blows the iPhone 6 in close up shot. In a certain close distance, the iPhone 6 just cannot get a focus but the Mate 7 manages to capture the object with great details. Not to mention the excellent pictures in day light environment, which is no worse than Samsung's 2014 S5 (best in the day light capturing league). In low light, this phone even beats the S5.
The drawback might be when it is used to capture moving objects, because it does not have OIS.
Anyway the camera on the mate 7 is among the best flagships and I am only satisfied on it!
Second is the battery life. In wifi, the phone can have 8 to 10 hours screen on time on my use (mainly on browser, social apps, occasionally light games)! I am not kidding. Please get an equivalent phone with "more efficient" hardware packed like the snapdragon in front of me to compete!
I am a previous Nexus 5 owner. The only problem or step back I feel on this upgrade is the UI speed feeling. But I cannot complain as I came from the fastest phone in the world. However even in this field the Mate 7 still performs acceptable. (fluent, but just no lighting fast like the N5 in ART)
I am very shocked they say this phone still not in the league of the best. Because there are no better options!
Note 4 - Close but a step back on battery life and TW UI
Nexus 6 - Who dare say the camera on the N6 will be better than the Mate 7? Where is the micro SD?
iPhone 6+ - Kidding me but ask me to use a pretty much same size device but with a 5.5'' screen?
So I am sorry, there are no better options so far in the market!
thing is guys when people in these reviews knows that phone comes from china it auto goes negative.. bcos they think china makes crap phones.. they are used to it that it must be all top notch.. but when it comes to iphone sht then auto is everything tolerated bcause it is not from china..
it is just life .. peoples mentality... they do what they want to do.. how they likes it..not genuine way..
like iphone has only 1gb ram they say that is fine as iphone doesnt need it.. but when it comes to android and they wud see 1gb they wud go balistic.. oo only one gb
these guys own isheephones so.. their verdict will be always negative..

Positivity For the 990

Whilst I am NOT defending Samsung and believe there is much to be improved, I do have the Mi 10 Pro with the Snapdragon 865 for a reference point. The Mi 10 Pro as you will be aware runs at 90hz and for me and my observations battery life is comparable and I'm running the ultra at 120hz.
As for performance & heat issues I decided to play an hour of PubG on the Ultra and another hour on the Mi 10 and again maybe slightly more heat on the Exynos but nothing to worry me personally. I can't say I noticed a difference in Gameplay but didn't run side by side or done a FPS count, that aspect I guess the 865 would lead, but I didn't have any issues on the Ultra in terms of playability.
I do recommend Samsung take notice and use ARM architecture on the Exynos 1000, and hope that this will resolve the complaints.
Maybe I got lucky with my chip, but honestly I can't complain as I'm not experiencing the issues that seem to plauge others.
Just showing and sharing my experience whist not defending the 990 entirely......:good:

Aswell as i.Same i didn't notice any issue.
Me too i don't deffend Samsung. But it is cruical that customer don't have any issues.
Put in side fps variation in games or better score in antutu it just isn't necessery for regular customer. He will not notice it.
I played games, record 4k 60fp 8k videos absolutley everyting also played games on charger because i wanted to know it there is any issue with thermal throtling or anything else.
And for camera with every update is better as well as battery life.I'm satisfied with my S20 Ultra Exynosm Brutal camera btw and brutal zoom
This is mine opinion after almost month with my phone.
Edit:
Also i updated myself camera app from 10.0.02.7 to 10.0.03.4 and its superfast shuter and auto focus.Overall its much much better.

Yeah I get the argument between performance of the 865 vs 990 and same price point. All I am saying is that I have seen threads saying the Cameras are Garbage, they really aren't, but yes should be better (Autofocus) which has improved for me.
The phone heats up, well I play long sessions of PubG and haven't noticed anything erratic.
I'm not debating the 990, I would also prefer the 865, but I'm most certainly not experiencing ALL of the aforementioned complaints in regards to this SOC.

I live in Saudi and currently it's the best weather we had this year, and room temperature is 24°and my phone get warm during casual tasks and heats up really bad and drop frames while gaming (all of this while I'm on Wi-Fi), when I turn LTE it is much worse and much warmer, when I turn 5G it stay up for few minutes then heat up then fall back to 4G (I have excellent 5G and 4G signal)

I'm so tired of people falsely claiming exynos is fine in gaming.
You can see a lot of video proofs on YouTube that exynos is trash for gaming and there's no way it can maintain 60fps in pubg mobile for extended playing sessions
If you can't tell the difference between stable 60fps and frequent drop to 40fps it's your problem, don't say it's fine.
At this point I really want someone show me a video proof of exynos running pubg mobile at 60fps for 1 hour. Then I can shut my fxxk up. But until now I see none.

Guys with positive feedback about exynos, where do you live? I live in Saudi and currently it's the best weather we had this year, and room temperature is 24°and my phone get warm during casual tasks and heats up really bad and drop frames while gaming (all of this while I'm on Wi-Fi), when I turn LTE it is much worse and much warmer, when I turn 5G it stay up for few minutes then heat up then fall back to 4G (I have excellent 5G and 4G signal)

I am also in Saudi Arabia, the phone is not too bad on WiFi, but when I use LTE OMG , phone become like heater , I think Samsung has to do something for this heat.

When I was in saudi, yanbu, the phone is hot as heck probably due to the constant search for better network.
Was in mobifly or mobily or something like that.
