Format sd card in custom recovery, after that push a rom to the phone to flash with adb : adb push namerom.zip /sdcard/. Try to push a rom first to see if that works/

Format external sd card, but why would you? You can just wipe what you dont`t need.
Usualy its enough to data factory reset, wipe both caches and format system before flashing a new rom. You don`t have t wipe the internal and external sd cards.

Format sdcard will do, that will wipe everything. Did you backup the EFS folder and stored it on your pc.

If you follow the steps correctly in Recovery, then you should see the whole directory listed of you SD card. If you don't see this, probably your SD card is defect. Try with another card.
Good luck.

I did nvflash for second time but some problem. this 16gb sd that i am using was an old sd from my hd2, i did a partition and extension in the recovery during the time i use the hd2. so i wonder if that affect it?
so far i didn't take any steps beside 1: redid the nvflash, i choose the internal sd and nand option.
AS USUAL
WIPE WIPE WIPE
wipe data
wipe cache
wipe dalvik
back to main screen
mounts and storage select format/system
install rom from sd card
Install gapps
Reboot enjoy
If coming from previous version just wipe cache and dalvik

Try following the below steps as per smaw51 recommendations :
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
mounts and storage/ format /data
mounts and storage/ format /system
mounts and storage/ format /cache
advanced/ wipe dalvik cache
Repeat a couple times for good measure
I have already tried those steps as I found them online and it does nothing, I always have to delete everything and then return to stock ... I just don't get it >

Oops accidentally thanked you for this post.
Anyways, I have found that wiping data from recovery doesn't clear download files and such. Download Astro File manager and see what is taking up most of your internal memory. I found personally that .zip files and a few things like that were taking up oodles of storage space. Also, when yuo do a CWM backup, do the backup to the External SD card, that way it doesn't take up app space.

like 7gb? and external is 4gb because i have a partition, but the partition in my case is irrelevant because before when I didn't know about link2sd I still had this problem, but everyone else seems to flash roms daily with no issues lol?

I believe reading this thread and taking a few tips has fixed everything!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1908711&page=2
I strongly suggest you flash a stock rom using Odin and clear everything. If you still have problems with the stock rom on your tablet return it for warranty repair. My feeling is though it is something you are doing. So once back to stock (out of the box) reinstall apps one at a time - avoid apps to sd and installing them on external memory. I don't believe that can be necessary!

Formatting internal SD

After trying out some roms I want to start fresh. I plan on odining back to MDB and was wondering if it's possible to format the internal SD as well. Is there an option in Odin to do that or is it bad to wipe the internal SD?
do u mean phone memory by interal sd ?
Not sure why you would need to format it--just back it up before you do anything
Why back to MD--just curious
As far as formatting internal, not sure
I rooted before looking into stock recovery to see if it had option. CWM did on the S3, but I have twrp and it does not have that option
there use to be codes to format internal also--don't remember them
some research needed--but still back up everything and pull ext sdcard before you do anything
I have a similar question, does formatting internal sd also wipe everything (except system) from root (/)?

It'll wipe /storage/sdcard0 and everything on it only. Not sure what you mean by root.

Kinda what I figured, so I'm curious is it possible to start completely fresh from / or maybe that happens on a ROM install anyway?
For instance under root I have the following directories:
acct,cache,config/d/data/data_1-3,dev,efs,etc,firmware,mnt,persdata,preload,proc,res,root,sbin,sdcard,sotage,sys,system,tombstones,vendor. Along with a bunch of files, many are init.something. I know how to wipe sdcard (as you mentioned above), and system but what about everything else.
Make sense?

Flashing a Rom will write over those other folders.

There's really no reason to do this before using ODIN. ODIN rewrites anything in it's way. If there's something it didn't rewrite it's probably because you need that.

....what do you mean internal SD card? I guess I'm just a little confused. I know there are many partitions (I think 7 total) but ODIN won't write to all of them. I'm assuming that if you format the internal storage completely it will mess your phone up.

The part where pics, etc are stored /storage/sdcard0. Yea, the other partitions get overwritten when you Odin. And you certainly don't want to try and format those.
Ps, there are closer to 30 different partitions that android creates.
Alright yeah I understand what you mean now. Your right ODIN won't do that part, to my knowledge the only safe way to do it through recovery on your phone.

TWRP Format Data

Hi all sorry for asking a dumb question, but would "format data" button inside TWRP's Wipe section (the button above factory reset) also delete a TWRP backup?

If your twrp backup in microsd card then it will not delete.
"Format data" will delete ( system/data/cache/dalvic cache/internal storage)
If you are planning to clean your device to install new clean rom then Make a backup of current rom and all your data in microsd card/usb drive before you do this.
So if the backup was in the internal sd it would have been deleted then right?

Go to my files and copy entire TWRP folder from internal storage to microsd card if you need your backup.

After FORMAT DATA there is nothing there to recover.
Everything has gone, sorry.
Only if you had made a TWRP backup, stored in the external sdcard, then you could restore it and get your DATA files back.
But in that case also, your personal files(pictures, music etc) are not included in this back up.
Only APPS data, meaning files that make apps working, are restored this way.
ALL your personal data, are stored in the internal storage.
If you have performed a DATA format, nothing is there anymore.

So you can recover data if it was not overwritten, even if it was deleted. You can use special software.
Which options do we need to select to backup existing ROM? And to do a recover in case of device failure.
Boot? System? System Image? Vendor? Vendor Image?
Maybe a dumb question but: If you format data, can you boot in current rom?

No, you can't lol. Format data wipes everything on the storage of the device. You better install a rom after wiping everything or you will get stuck in bootloader / bootloops.
In some a/b slot devices, if you don't have a rom installed, your custom recovery is also wiped because it usually resides on the boot.img.
