HTC M8 GPE vs Stock - One (M8) General

The purpose of this thread is to compare the gpe and sense editions of the m8 in terms of performance in all areas (battery life, gaming, performance, lag in menus, etc.)

I personally like GPE a lot better. I still get good battery life (main reason why upgraded from a Nexus 5) camera is decent, sense is arguably better. I don't notice any lag difference between the 2. I just think sense 6 is ugly and I feel I am buried in settings. Vanilla kit Kat is just so nice

Been there done that. Getting back to Sense is a nightmare and you really have to know what you are doing.
I was on the GE for a few days. Contacts>add-edit picture BUG does not work, No Gallery now you are forced to use Google +,to view photos,
ATT reception was spotty - disconnects, Camera no comparison Sense much better. Lag no difference. All the things I use daily
are on Sense like battery %, message and email counts on icon, power saving (if you want it), Max screen brightness on Auto etc....
Battery life for me was better on Sense. Just my 2 cents....
CC

What do you guys think about lag in apps like Google+ scrolling. It scrolling seems a little glitchy on sense. How about on gpe.

So with the new Google camera the sense still takes better photos? That might be a deal breaker alone.

For the past couple of weeks I have been using both as I can easily switch between the two on the fly via nandroid backup restore.
Prior to m8 I had nexus 5 as I like the clean clutter free experience of pure google android, I tend to find sense to be cumbersome and really hogs the system but I must admit to my surprise HTC have really cut out a lot of fat off the new sense 6 and therefore between the two I did not notice any lag both run very fast and fluid. Also battery life was about the same with both in my case I averaged about 18-20hrs from heavy to moderate use.
So bottom line I'm happy with both but below are the pros and cons:
GPE:
Pros:
- Very Clean Google Android experience no bloatware
- Very fast and fluid no lags
- HTC Dual camera function works
- All the tweaks from Gravity Box works via xposed framework work perfectly!
Cons:
- Camera slower than sense camera
- Google Music player not as good as HTC Music
- Contacts management not good as sense
- Backup not good as HTC Back Up
- Dot view case features limited
- No Extreme power mode
HTC Sense Stock:
Pros:
- Very fast and fluid no lags
- Camera is very fast and more features than google.
- HTC Music
- Contacts management
- Blinkfeed is actually good
- HTC Backup better than google backup
- Extreme power mode
- Full function of Dot View Case
Cons:
- Although sense 6 is the most cleanest and clutter free from HTC they still need to lose little more fat.
- Most the Gravity Box tweaks via xposed framework DONT Work!

This is the kind of stuff I was looking for when starting this horribly-named thread. Very helpful.
Basically, if you don't use the Sense launcher or specific "Sense" apps... is there anything else that Sense brings to the table under the hood? Or is it just hooks fro their launcher and apps?

Ive installed the google home launcher ....aosp message app ....the aosp desk clock ....and gallery on sense, I hate the sense launcher ....I wish they would give us the option to scroll the same way, now if only I could get the original google lock screen I would be happy at that. As for performance ....its the same ...maybe GPE is slighty better as theres less to hog resources. So ...I basically have the best of both.

How did you install the the Google now launcher? It says not compatible in the play store

Biggest differences if you don't care-for/need sense are you'll get slightly less screen on time(~6hour sot instead of 7ish), you lose zoe, no built-in power management/battery saver/extreme battery saver mode, couple less gestures and dot view features if you happen to use that case... Have to use trickster or something to limit kernel speed yourself if you want a "battery saver mode".
Everything else is pretty much the same.
GPE is a tad faster for the trade-off. You can still add the old Gallery app, tweak build prop ril settings to get your network right so data speed will be same as stock sense. Auto screen brightness works the same, you just have to recheck the box after you touch the slider.. and of course, TONS of customization through gravity box.

Hmm. Thanks for the info. I have a One XL now (just waiting for my upgrade window, coming soon) and the biggest thing that bothers me is the duplicate apps -- using Hangouts for Messaging, but stuck with the HTC Messages app always running (and freezing it via TiBu always gives me odd results, ie I stop receiving texts). Obviously when I get the new One I'll play around with Sense a bit and see how I feel.

It's the same way in GPE. I've uninstalled all apps I don't use including hangouts which was already default and there are no side effects. Also screen on time is subjective to the user and how he/she uses there phone and depending on if you use third party kernels then you'll be getting very similar results.
EDIT: when you delete an app or freeze the app in TiBu, delete its data first then proceed to uninstall. No problems for me whatsoever when I do that.

I am currently usimg Lopez, Andre hace sinse about a week from getting my G2. 8 have tried all...stock, lp, and adw...and I prefer lp.
I'm using 7 screens and customized everything...working with swipes, and custom shortcuts. I have designated my screens for specific functions...dev, media, schedules, main screen, news, twitter/facebook, app folders....this setup works very well for me, as seldom have to get to app drawer and search for the app that I want.
Stock, was a bit boring, and adw, was ok...no real distinction from lp oyher than the ability to define themes....I guess I can live without them.

I've used both and I prefer to use LauncherPro Plus because I like to customize my phone a lot. I like the fact that you can adjust the size of widgets, customize icons on the dock, and the home button (which is customizable) when on the home screen shows you different desktops (reminds me of my Macbook). The last one I'm not sure if stock does or not.

ADW.Launcher. Once LP gets a swipe gesture by which I can pull down the notification bar by swiping down anywhere on the screen, I might switch to that for its widget. Oh and I like the Galaxy S implementation of the app drawer option in ADW as well.

Apollo Music Player Now Available

CM9's New Stock Music Player made by Andrew Neal is available for all on CM9. Based off of Android's Stock Music Player with many added features has finally come, with three different versions available once it hits the Android Market.
#1 CM9 Upstream Version
#2 Android Market Version (Free) with ads that shouldn't be in the way. For those not on CM9.
#3 Android Market Paid Version without ads and extra features not currently announced by Andrew Neal.
This topic is entirely about an App, and has been brought to the general section to you by me as it is great news and well worthy of this section until your FNMs see fit to relocate it to the App Section.
Edit: This is not to be confused with the unamed public beta version released by Andrew Neal in Jan-Feb, it's come a long way since then with one of the most beneficial changes being the memory hog issue being rectified, enjoy.

I have a m3u playlist on my SD-card. I go under playlists, choose my playlist and press the corner-menu button and choose shuffle all. It starts playing. It responds to htc hands-free next-pause-play-revious buttons. So everything seems superb, but suddenly instead the next song I hear my recorded calls. This happens with the original htc Player too. I use latest Android revolution HD on my Sensation XE and the latest Bricked kernel, which supports two-sided call recording and offers a nice Call recorder app. Even if I could hide the call recordings, its still strange and very odd, that it starts playing audio files that are not included in the chosen playlist.

I suggest you do the trick people once thought to be a bug, simply add .nomedia to the folder that has your call recordings and they won't be taken into account.

Oh wow!
When I first tried this I thought "Pssh the old CM9 music is still way better!"
And in a lot of ways it is, but after playing with this for almost an hour I am impressed.
Swiping the bottom bar to the left to reveal pause/next/shuffle/repeat is awesome. Long-pressing the name of the track on the bottom bar brings up the play list it's in as an overlay. Which is awesome.
Swiping in the now playing screen to see the playlist is awesome.
The search functionality is highly improved. So awesome.
It's much faster and uses a lot less RAM.
It does lack some functionality, which I know is coming in future versions.
The now playing screen needs to be improved. Tapping on artist isn't as responsive or a visible as it should be.
I need a scrolling bar in the artist and albums tab.
And letters in the ones that do have it.
There is no landscape mode. Minor complaint.
The white theme is awful. Download the black one.
At this point it's debatable which one I like more. The old CM9 music had a lot more to offer at the price of instability. MIUI's is nice too. I wish they'd make that available to all like MIUI home.
My album are so fuzzy, but the app has a sexy UI imo, I'm glad to have built in DSP capabilities (w/o google music), though I still feel like it lags. I agree with Darkie, MIUI has the best music app, poweramp has amazing control over sound if he could somehow incorporate some things from those it'd be #1. I'd rather use a different set of music control I.e. dspmanager, there's not enough options. 4 stars for being sexy though, and white theme does suck.

Yeah, .nomedia files seem like the only way to do it at the moment, which is kind of unfortunate. I wish that you could could do the opposite and set up the media scanner to only look in certain folders for music, pictures, videos, etc. I would think that media scanning would be a lot quicker and less annoying that way.

Wow, it looks great! Do you know when is it going to be released in the market for gingerbread??

Go launcher lagging.

So I've been using cm9 for like 2 weeks along with go launcher. And I always noticed it being slow and always lagging and not smooth at all. So today I went back to thunderhawk and was amazed of how quick it was and was just amazed by it until I restored go launcher and I ended up with the same performance as I had on cm9 or even worseee. So I uninstalled it and wiped cache and dalvic and did a fresh install off the market and started to customize it and noticed that the more settings I change and the more apps I add to the homescreen the worse and worse it became.
I really don't even have all that much things. Just 3 pages, 3 widgets, 4 apps, and 4 bookmark shortcuts. And with only those it is very slow.
So I'm using tw launcher now and the whole ROM is amazing now.
Anyone notice this with go launcher? Anyone know any similar launcher that doesn't lag? What I'm looking for is the ability to custom choose icons from gallery, a scrollable dock, and some cool transition animations for homescreens + app drawer.
I know some may have these like adw launcher and launcher pro but I wanna see what you guys think is the best out of them all cuz I know there is some that I don't even know about.

Nova is "very" customizable and does support custom icons. Nova and Apex are right on the same level, and are both worth purchasing the licensed features. On Apex I randomly get lag in the app drawer, though. So I have since stuck with Nova since it's been flawless for me.

Well Apex is the same guy who made LauncherPro.
But i actually like NOVA better customization and barely any lag whatsoever.
With any lag issues that i have its because i'm using conservative for the cpu governor instead of OnDemand.
But both are very great and as well worth the money.

Holo is slightly more updated for GB devices. It works for GB, ICS, and Jellybean. Icons can be changed. Small footprint is why I switched. Holo is slightly more updated for GB devices. It works for GB, ICS, and Jellybean. Icons can be changed. Small footprint is why I switched. Go doesn't work as well for our phones as it does newer models, which it runs lag free... even tho it 'sends your data to china'... Then I hope Chow Lung doesn't call my sister...

What's funny is do you remember ADW vs LauncherPro?
Well Apex is the same guy who made LauncherPro.
But i actually like NOVA better customization and barely any lag whatsoever.
With any lag issues that i have its because i'm using conservative for the cpu governor instead of OnDemand.
But both are very great and as well worth the money.

Apex is Federico Carnales? I'm not so sure about that.

yes it is because a lot of the people who have reviewed it and know him actually said that it was him and he just changed the name of the org/app group who made the Apex one.

great we have samsung ui, sony ui...i wonder if any ported motorola and LG ui for Thunderbolt:good:
So... I've flashed and been running the Rom for a bit now. Most excellent Rom! I removed a few apps I don't use, gmail, google books, VZW backup, and city ID, and all is well. I'm curious, what is the the VZW_Remote_Tool.apk in the system folder used for? I'll see how battery life is, but so far, great work, well worth a try for anyone on the fence.

awesome panoramic photo working, landscape homescreen available, sony ui working..
non working:
-pedometer, adventure training
-there is no facebook for htc sense in friendstream
-for non vzw user will see "this sim card frm unknown location" on lockring...:crying:
-my GPS seems cant lock my position for long time..
ill stick wit this rom for w while :fingers-crossed:
Walking counter does force close, and adventure training as well, likely due to walking counter. I was unable to get a GPS lock, even after trying GPS assistance data. As I don't see the facebook for HTC sense app, the exclusion of it from friendstream isn't a bug. It's also unlikely that a Verizon user can duplicate or remedy the unknown SIM issue...

I found out what this app update VZW_Remote_Tool.apk is. It aids customer service reps to tap into your phone via remote to repair any issues. "I don't think I would like that"... I may remove it on next update but will leave that up to everyone If you like, just uninstall it with ES File Explorer.
Here is the link below that describes more about this app:

Great information, thank you. I'll cut that one out too. I had just never seen that one before, likely because I always ran custom roms, and it was removed by the devs of them. I look forward to any update(s) to this. The theming and overall fluidity of the Rom is very nice. Hopefully, you'll be able to figure GPS, I didn't look through the files for it at any great length, but was able to obtain GPS locks without issue on nandroids of two other roms, and had a solid data connection throughout.
Hmm. Any word on gps?

Download the XDA app or tapatalk and set a shortcut to the G2 main screen and you'll find it way easier to get to. Welcome to hands down the best phone around IMO.

I rooted mine the day I got it, and used Titanium Backup to uninstall pretty much anything Verizon had installed and some other apps I won't use. I found someone elses recommendation to use 2x Battery app to shut down wifi/network save for 15 minute check in's to allow app updating.
Look forward to battery life. Granted I've only had about 2 hours screen on time, but quite a lot of photo and video down and uploading, file transferring, and app installs, but I'm sitting at 62 hours 18 minutes on battery with 25% remaining right now as of typing this.
Also look forward to probably the snappiest phone you've used. I still can't believe how fast this thing is when compared to my old rooted, overclocked, and custom kernel'd Rezound. And that's still a nice phone IMO. But this thing is just amazing. I haven't had a single issue yet.
Nice. But the volume and screen lock button placement is really annoying and typing will take getting used too lol. But it is super fast. Quad core 2.3 ghz. And I forget the ram I think 2Gb

The back buttons do take getting used to, but once you do, it makes it hard to use another phone.
Is this your first phone without a physical keyboard? You can get a Bluetooth keyboard, but those are normally not very portable. Not sure if all versions include swipe (I know sprint does, not sure about others). Try out that keyboard if it's on your phone. Again, it will take a little getting used to, but you will like it better then touch typing. If your phone doesn't have it, the Android or AOSP keyboard probably has swiping built in, and it's also possible to enable it with the stock keyboard. It's better then physical keyboard once your accustomed to it.
No I have plenty of android without keyboards but something about this one is slightly different is all. Btw I just noticed something I have rooted my phone and I may not have noticed this but I don't remember seeing it before. ( phone has not been off since its update prior to rooting) but in file managers I see emulated/we card etc. I do not remember seeing emulated in the file paths. Ever in there different file managers 1 root And the others not
Sent from my VS980 4G using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Your "sdcard" is basically fake but I think the emulated is more about your account and potential encryption? Not sure. I just rooted yesterday - not that phone needs it really. But the 0 1 etc thing came up last year on CM (my phone didn't have latest OS) and is normal/Android related.

Since you're rooted, I'd recommend installing the xposed installer. It allows you to install modules to help adjust certain aspects of the UI you may not like in stock, so you don't have to install a custom Rom and potentially ruin the performance of this amazing phone! The screenshot below is of the modules I've utilized so far on my Verizon G2. These have proven to work for me without any hiccups, but be very careful installing anything else, as I myself can't vouch for them, and they could pose potential problems with your phone's functionality. Also, what's not on this list because it's a download from the play store... download G2 xposed. It needs xposed installed to run, and it's probably one of the best purchases I've ever made! It's free right off the bat, but you'll want to unlock all the features. Congrats on your purchase of arguably the best phone available today! Enjoy! And safe tinkering!

G2 Tweaksbox is another good one, as well as Greenify, to help get even more battery life out this beast - both from the play store as well as G2 xposed... Also, you're gonna love bleed immersive mode in the G2 xposed app. It's pretty fantastic! But I think you have to purchase it to be able to use that... totally worth it.
Enjoy!

Google the latest version of "xposed" not "exposed" ... download it and install it, may need reboot after install, then you can utilize G2 xposed, Greenify, and G2 tweaksbox apps from the market, and download the other modules in the screenshot from the downloads section of the actual xposed app. As for custom recovery, I always just download TWRP or CWM recovery and flash those through Rom manager or something like that. Hope this was helpful!

Yeah I know its Xposed, damn auto-correct lol. Also installing TWRP looks more user friendly to me, but since I installed SuperSU and the binaries were updating using normal option and not TWRP option will that matter?
well I was on TWRP site and didn't see the LG g2 as compatible ? is it not?
and cwm seems like a normal app on the play store, last time i rooted my phone (droid razr) from droidrazrroot.com it was an all in one and the recovery was more or less like a separate booted program
