M8 vs. Galaxy S5 for Outdoor Visibility - One (M8) General

Those of you who bounced back and forth between the M8 and the S5. If you had the chance to compare the two in direct, BRIGHT sunlight (Texas, Arizona, etc)... could you compare which one was easier to read?
I know the S5 can hit a higher NIT level than the M8, but it's only in "bursts" from what I've read. And cannot maintain that level for a long time.

By far the M8. In my opinion, HTC one m7 was better in bright daylight as the S4 was, and the same case is with the M8 and the S5. I was amazed at the fact that with the M8 it almost didn't really make a difference that it was hit by direct sunlight. Quite impressive

Outdoor visibility - screen brightness

Can anyone please comment on outdoor visibility with the M's screen? How about overall brightness. On my S3, one of the huge knocks I have on it is the outdoor visibility. It's nearly just washed out and blank in direct sunlight glare. I was at the Bucs football game on Sunday and damn could I not read much, even on full brightness it was bad and sucked my battery up. My fiancee's 4S screen however was at mid brightness and it was perfectly visible. Another Galaxy user commented on how she could actually see the screen when doing a group self-portrait =)
Anyway, I've read several S3 screen comparisons and know it's not the best..pentile and all and seeing the M has an AMOLED pentile display, I'm curious about outdoor visibility and overall brightness. Thanks!!

Not nearly as good as the Droid or D3. Its readable in direct sunlight but I have to really look closely. For example on a contact it is very hard to see the different number categories like Home, Mobile, etc. They should have used a bigger font.

[Q] Z2 owners - how's the screen's visibility when outdoors??

I'm thinking about getting this phone but one of the major concerns I have is how visible the screen is when using the phone outdoors and the sun is out. I saw a review that said the phone was unusable outdoors because it doesn't get very bright but I want to hear from actual owners.
Phone is more than bright enough for me, problem is that its quite reflective. Im coming from one x, so only can compare to it, and its better than one x.

It's clearly not perfect in direct sunlight; you have to make an effort to read the screen.
Despite this particular situation, the screen is perfectly usable outdoor.

Yup it's the worst thing about the device it can be totally unusable in the sun I have just bagged a smartwatch 2 with a metal strap for £50 so that will be used as well as the z2

I mean, no phone is usable in direct sunlight but there are varying degrees of visibility so it has to be relative to what other phones are capable of.

Check this, seems acceptable for me no deal breaker here as some may suggest

I find the screen to be ok but I can see lots of reflective white dots when in direct sunlight, very annoying.

For using in direct sunlight, Galaxy S5 is the best ever. But that one sucks battery. Z2 somewhat not deliver more brightness in direct sunlight.
I actually liked Z2's screen better than Z1's & ZL's under direct sunlight. You can check the third post at this thread

On auto brightness, it seems fine to me. Average I suppose? I can see it just as well as my moto x and I never really had a gripe with its visibility. Only thing I noticed that could have brought this up as an issue is off angle viewing it becomes far less visible...but why would you use it off angle? I live in south Florida BTW, so there's no lack of sun.
Much better than I thought. No problems even under direct sunlight.

I come from a Szajsung Galaxy S3 and I really love the Z2 screen. Under direct sunlight only the reflections are a little bit annoying.

S5 users - quick couple questions.

Hi all,
Just a couple of q's for the S5 crew.
I've bought a brand new LG G2 and the camera is gash. My trusty S3 wee-wee's all over it from a great height. Aside from that, the phone is an utter champion which makes it a tough choice..
Can anyone tell me the S5 camera sits up there with the best, and if I'd be happy with it's performance coming from the G2?
Help me XDA - you're my only hope.
To be honest I like every thing in the s5 except one thing .. the camera ... specially the front camera is **** and even **** is little word for the front camera it's a disaster the back one ether the s3 camera is better for me because my old phone was s3

I love my s5's camera, I think it's great.
Take a look in the pictures taken with s5 thread for some guidance

It depends on what you want out of a smartphone camera. The S5 takes incredible shots outside in good light. It's noticeably better than the G2 in those situations. But inside or outside in poor light, the shots are pretty lacking, and I prefer what the G2 provides overall. If you're only shooting still shots in low light and can hold the camera still for an extended period of time, the shots from the S5 can turn out decent sometimes, but all too often they look like oil paintings.
So, in my opinion, he S5 wipes the floor with the G2 in outdoor shots with good light. But in low light, the G2 provides better shots more often.

You have to decide what you want out of a camera. All smartphone cameras have weaknesses. The S5 camera has been widely praised as being superior. And it is in most circumstances. But it is weak in low light. While another phone may work very well in dim light but not be nearly as good as the S5 in daylight.
The S5 camera is very good unless low light shots are an important priority for you. And I have no idea what you meant by gash in this context. I looked in three dictionaries and none of them listed a meaning that would fit here. So it must be regional slang?

Gash = Crap :highfive:

Dude lets talk about legibility under the sun!

Ok you know how people compare screens. Resolutions and legibility. Especifically when comparing screens, they say they can hardly tell the difference. One comparison pits the G4 against the Nexus 6. Well I have both and can tell you that perhaps inside the screens are similar enough. But dude! Outside I have to shade the Nexus 6 and just about every phone or tablet (except the Notion Adam with pixel qi screen) and still cant hardly read the screen. The G4 on the other hand is almost amazing how freaking clearly you can read and see stuff. And it doesn't have to wash out the colors (much YMMV that sun!)..
What's your experiences been?
I agree. Have the N5, N6, & S6. The G4 is the best in the sun edging out the S6. The N5 would be next and in a very distant last is the N6. I love my Nexus's but the N6 outdoor legibility is abysmal.
I still prefer my G2 screen in the direct sun. barely had an issue, never knew using a phone in direct sunlight could be a problem until i used the G4... maybe I'm still nostalgic of leaving my old phone go?
why can't i just have my old G2 battery from jelly bean with a new cameras and stock android ?
I've read complaints about the G4's screen in direct sunlight. I think it's superb!
I owed both S6 and G4 and I think he S6 is far more superior in direct sunlight then the G4.
S6 gets brighter then the G4 point blank. S6 gets up to 700 nits while the G4 struggles at 460.
Anyone who says G4 is brighter than the S6 in direct sunlight its straight up lying or actually never had a S6

Same here. I even picked up another G4 the other day and went back to my S6 for the last time (got a great deal on another). The S6 screen is far better in direct sunlight and in the dark.
I have no reading issues. I'm happy.
My only comparison point is the M7, which was a complete wash for me.
I've had all the major flagship and the best in direct sunlight are the s6 edge and the g4. But the g4 struggles while the s6 doesn't

Yeah I came from the S6 and what I've seenin earlier reviews are "G4 isn't that great in direct sun...yet there's plenty of good reports on it right here. As for the S6, i think it performed superbly in direct sun when adjusted.

Ever tried a 808 ?
Just back from sunny Spain and I thought the G4 was excellent outside. Thing is though, I possibly shouldn't have been using it drunk while around the pool as it slipped onto the tiles and chipped a corner a little lol. Still worked perfectly though after it and I continued my drunken antics
I was at the beach on sunday and i had no problem with it in the sun. I do have a skinomi glass protector that is polarized on it so it may help with that some. I kept it on 90% brightness when using so it would not get to hot
Yes it very well for direct sunlight, the g4, but it's so annoying when it gets all gray and faded out colors when in direct sunlight

[Q] Sunlight visibility vs. Note 4?

Has anyone come to this phone from a Note 3 or Note 4 and been able to compare the two outside under direct sunlight?
The Note 3 and 4 when using "auto brightness" get a bit of a boost to make things easier to read in direct sunlight. The picture quality is poor, but you can read text easily. That, and the screen doesn't reflect very much.
How do they compare vs the Moto X?
I came from the Note 4 the Moto display seems a bit better all around. For direct sunlight, I can put the side by side tomorrow to see.

Thanks, hope it does well!
It's very visible. I could see super clear at like 40%. I started to have a hard time seeing at around 20%.
I'm pretty happy with mine outdoors
Coming from Oneplus One, the new Moto X is far easier to read outside. Picture doesnt wash out for some reason and I can finally see my phone direct in the sun. Still evaluating the phone before I decide to keep or not.
