How is the lag and scrolling? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How is the lag and smooth scrolling speed on the phone? Is there any lag that anyone notices? Do the menus and websites scroll really smoothly like the iPhone 5S?

I have only been using s5 in ART mode and its butter smooth everywhere. But sometimes the phone doesn't come out of sleep (the screen remains dark/off) only the capacitive buttons light up and i have to toggle the power button several times for it to work (no power off required). another issue i face is that the camera takes a solid 5 seconds or more to start up from lock screen. May be i should switch back to DALVIK.

Tw launcher lag a bit. To overcome this u should enabled developer option and set each animation by 0.5x. I'm using nova launcher and it's fly

I remember having this conversation about the GS 2 years ago. Back then it was hard to argue that the phone had lagging issues. And today coming from an s2 the only lag I'm experiencing is in my own mental processing power trying to keep up with this phone

Yes there is lag. Especially when comparing to New modern phones like the HTC One M8.
Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk

Let's be serious once and for all.
TouchWiz will ALWAYS be slower than stock Android, so please stop asking if the S5, S6, S7 lag.
Don't expect TouchWiz to be as fast! Ever! That simple.

How is the lag compared to the m8?
I've noticed lag on the s5 while sifting through the camera settings during the camera mode. I think the scrolling on the s5 seems to be a little smoother compared to the m8 based on my testing both phones at a store, but I could be wrong. I also think the iPhone is still somewhat smoother than both phones. I'm hoping for find an android that beats out the iPhone in terms of lag and smooth scrolling.

I do use Nova but generally the phone feels like it's finally shaken off some of the slow S4 shackles.

My experience so far is that it is a big improvement over the S4. Bone stock so far.

If you look on YouTube, there's a video comparison of the lag. The S5 loses every time, but it's microseconds, nothing major.

Lag through homescreens

Is anyone facing a little bit of lag when moving between homescreens on their nexus 7?
Only when coming out of a reboot but that's normal, otherwise I have no lag at all.

Some live wallpapers cause lag, their fault though. If you're lagging a quad core device you're doing something wrong.

Ya I experience lag. Usually happens when leaving an app and going back to the home screen. Can be pretty bad lag at times

With the stock launcher it seems that there is a micro stutter but that is only with stock launcher. Does rooting help lag on the homescreen? Because I haven't rooted yet.

Rooting itself will have no effect on it. Maybe a custom ROM or kernel though.
Well custom ROMS have done wonders to me.

There is a bit of stutter scrolling through the homescreens, its not totally fluid. I noticed the same with the Tegra One X as well (but thats ICS so expected).
My Galaxy Nexus on the otherhand, is perfectly slick and smooth. It's strange, it doesn't happen all of the time neither.
In the app tray too I feel like there is a slight slutter or delay if the finger stroke isn't long enough (even though it still changes screen).

So it might be tegra 3 thing after all? So only customs ROM could help this or another launcher.

Is this screen lag still apparent on the N4?

I think it's just hard to show on video at a normal frame rate. When I drag the notifications bat down on my galaxy note there is considerable touchscreen lag compared to if I was using an iPhone, the screen is always trying to play catch up and doesn't do a great job of it.
It was filmed using an s3 which i thought would be comparable to the N4. If this is solved on the nexus then great!

On idevices, the web page is like glued on fingers, especially when you zoom, on android, there is like a micro delay, but its not a problem at all.
Tapalked with a Nexus⁴
When you open and close the statut bar fastly, you can see this delay, If you enable "show touch" under developer setting, you see that the cursor isn't under you finger when you move et. But you see this delay if you move fastly and on in long surface (when opening the statut bar from the top to the bottom of the screen)

This is a good example of what I'm taking about. If you swipe down the notification bar of an iPhone and then an android device then you'll see what I'm talking about.

If that's a big deal breaker tho. Then just stick with iOS ?
Their is multiple things iOS & Android have superior to each other.
To me it's really not a big deal. Yet hardly noticeable!

I catch the drift, but still its something I can't notice during normal operation. If its that big of an issue I would stay with iOS then. Why not just use your phone instead of trying to do every operation as fast as humanly possible?

I've got a Galaxy Note and have never had an iOS device, but whenever I try one that is the one thing that I envy. The whole experience just becomes more connected. The nexus 4 might be closer in terms of the iPhones screen latency, but the Galaxy Note is a mile away.

I know what you are talking about, although I would put it under general responsiveness, and on every other android device I've owned it's been noticeable...it just isn't on the n4.
The N4 is a lot better than the S3 in the video you showed. It's still not as smooth as iOS but it's definitely not noticeable at all unless you're specifically looking for it. Oddly enough, pulling down the notification tray is actually a lot further behind the finger for me than the browser, but I usually just flick from the top to pull it down rather than a full swipe anyway.
The nexus 4 is Noticeable faster & smother than My friends Note 2.
But the nexus is the only android I haven't had issues with . like this process has stopped unexpectedly etc

Lag?

Am I the only one experiencing MASSIVE lag on this phone? The lag comes and goes intermittently, its really random. Not consistent, but I experience it often doing typical tasks, such as changing my browser window, opening text messages, changing between apps, the notification bar will stutter when pulled down randomly, etc. This is my second S4, and both seem to lag really bad.
What do you guys think?

It's a problem. Everyone has noticed it with the AT&T version. AT&T and Samsung really need to get together and get on this pretty quick to address this issue. Stutter and lag should not be part of a phone that scores so well on every benchmark.

Install Nova launcher and override the transition animations with either slide or ICS. That takes care of the stutters when opening and closing apps.

Im convinced the lag is a sure thing on ALL devices. Those of you who dont THINK you have no lag, I assume is because you have never used a lag free device like the HTC One or Nexus 4. Personally at this point I'd go as far to say my old S3 was "smoother" than this S4.....
Mine is so laggy that I don't even want to use it. I would say that its because it has so much going on.

I'm wondering if this is a 4.2 vs 4.3 thing.
I also think the one may be throttling harder, which would explain better battery life.
Could be resolution difference. It's harder to push more resolution though.
The only reason I'm worried is the reports off how smooth the phone is. I dont want a lemon phone

It's neither of those things. It's just the app not playing nice with the SoC, just wait for an update and it should be a-ok

[Q] Screen responsiveness

Has anyone else noticed lag in responsiveness on the screen while navigating through the phone, especially the browser. I even installed Dolphin Browser and it also lags.
