Huge Performance Drop on Games - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am loving this phone so far except for one major thing... when i start to play games (depends on the game) the frame rate drops so much to where games aren't even playable. Is anyone else experiencing this? If so, is there a fix?

This runs games and apps much smoother than my d2vzw (s 3)
Check and see if your s5 has anything running in the background or if your phone is auto updating or syncing anything when you go to play your games.
No problems here though.
I haven't played with the different runtime yet (ART) so I have no comment on that, however, others have said it is much smoother and programs load faster (camera/YouTube/etc)

Have you altered anything in development mode? If so switch your settings back to stock

Yeah i tried this.

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it but when I was using the Verizon messaging for my primary txting, my phone was laggy and games were the same. I switched to the stock Sammy texting and it cleared up. The Verizon texting was trying to do all kinds of background stuff

Is that issue for PC or Phone ?

[Q] How could my Nexus 4 be laggy and choppy?

So, this is a very fast phone. And it's got craploads of RAM. And I've never had it in use where over a GB of RAM was in use. Yet, when I'm close to that 1GB utilized state, the phone starts getting bogged down, and downright choppy in the launcher! How could this be????
This even happens in the widget selector screen, where my hacked GS2 with JB never, ever was choppy.
Could it be a rogue app? I just expect at this point in time (with the speed + Project Butter) to be done with choppy/laggy performance issues.
What exactly are you doing when it happens? I haven't noticed any issues like this yet. Just been using normal apps though.

I'm really just tooling around, using the device. Nothing special. I do have Tasker running in the background, but that's no CPU hog. I have Google+, Facebook, Twitter, etc. all installed and syncing, along with Gmail. But again it's not like they're all syncing constantly... just normal setup stuff.
I consistently am seeing jittery animation in the widget selection area of the launcher... no jerkiness at all on the homescreens or app drawer. Also, apps all run super fast and smooth.

Try turning wifi on and off (or toggling data if using the cell network). I had a similar sounding issue and it seemed related to background network usage. Specifically with some of the Google apps and background syncing. In my case the phone would get warm as well, so I'm sure the CPU was busy as well. Cyanogen with gapps fixed the issue, but a simple data wipe might have worked as well.
Absolutely no issue here with over 60 apps installed.
Not even the slightest lag here...Still Fast and smotth after one month!
I vote tasker is the culprit.

I noticed a slight bit of choppiness when I was using Google music, sending text messages and surfing the web but it was only temporary and have not seen any such problems since that day. Trying a master wipe or another rom would probably be best.
Use better battery stats to see if an app is running in the background constantly. If not try doing a wipe and not installing any apps at first to see if the lag is still there.

Stuttering/Not Smooth

Hi, first post here!
I was just wondering if anybody else has noticed a little bit of stuttering/lack of smoothness when doing certain things? For example, scrolling down Facebook is not smooth at all for me, Twitter is a lot better but still isn't perfectly smooth! I also notice a bit of stuttering in games such as Temple Run. Also when I go to the menu and scroll right, the first time it stutters a bit, but then will be perfectly smooth after that!
I'm unsure whether this is just the phone, or there is a problem with mine/something slowing it down? I might have just not noticed it when I first got the phone, but I am sure everything was perfectly smooth before.
I would say, yes... but you said "not smooth at all". Is this even after it has loaded pictures, posts, statuses, etc? Maybe a video of this in action or something could help out.
For now, I'm going to say yes, I have noticed stuttering. It is slight and it occurs because the phone and apps are not perfect.
...
Yet.

Ok, but please: Do not blame your phone for the badliest-programmed-app-on-the-whole-planet-ever, named Facebook.
Really mate... These are app issues and have nothing at all to so with the phone.
I titanium bu to freez the Facebook app. It uses memory and battery 24/7..I use the tabr app for fb and twitter.

Problems with badly coded apps rather than the phone itself.

Could these apps be effected the rest of the phone though? Like I said the menus can stutter sometimes, where they didn't before, and also scrolling down in everything single app has definitely lost the smoothness it had!

I sometimes face this micro stuttering too on entering app center for the first time, entering and swiping the second time after the screen turned off doesn't stutter.

Games freezing

My games play just fine for ~10 minutes, and then start freezing. They start working again after a a small amount of time, but continue freezing. It makes me think it might have something to do with overheating, but the phone itself is barely warm. Does anyone else have this issue?
It's not that big of a deal, because I don't play games frequently, I'm just thinking that when I travel, I don't want to be having this issue with only being able to play games intermittently.
I first noticed it on SlimRom, thought it might have had something to do with the smaller pixel density that rom has, so I changed the lcd density to default, and the issue continued. I installed AOKP last night, and the issue is happening with that one as well.
I didn't have the stock rom on long enough to test it, but it would be nice to know that this is a phone issue and not a rom issue.
Right now I'm trying out the rest of the roms to see if any work for games for more than 10-15 minutes, but I would really appreciate some input from anyone.
EDIT
Issue occurs with Carbon and PAC roms as well.

not sure, but it could be a memory (RAM) issue. does the freezing happen with other apps, or just certain games?
I have not seen it happen in anything except games, but it only happens when I have the game open for 10+ minutes. I don't think I have ever had a single app open that long, but it doesn't seem to be a RAM issue to me. Once the freezing starts happening, it freezes a couple times a minute, and other apps work just fine, even with the game still running in the background. If I set it down, it won't freeze again for another few minutes, which is why it seems like GPU overheating to me. Once it gets hot, it freezes really frequently, then when given the chance to cool down it doesn't freeze again unless its been running a game for longer.
I just got it to freeze, hit the task killer button(said 380MB free) and went back into the game, and it froze again within 30 seconds.
I downloaded a CPU temp app, and the CPU is ~35C, and doesn't get much higher when the game starts freezing. Are there any apps that show GPU temp? I can't seem to find anything.

get a logcat and send it to the Dev of whatever ROM you're on.
I did, I ended up sending it to the SlimRoms crew, because Slim has been my go-to rom.
In other news, I used the Utility on the Dev page to flash back to stock 4.1.2, and have been playing a game for around 20 minutes with no issues, it seems like stock works fine. Good to know I dont have a malfunctioning device.
I'm gunna try some of the 4.1.2 roms and if they don't have the issue, I may just stick with one of those.
Thanks for your help.
I had the same problem! I'm running Carbon and I had the same problems with games. I recently flashed the latest version of carbon and it seems to not have the issue any more though

Interesting.. That would definitely be worth a try.
Right now I'm back to a 4.1.2 rom and games are running flawlessly. I miss all the nice features of 4.2 though, and having Pie and Halo would be amazing.
Thanks for the tip, which Carbon build are you on? I'm looking at the list and I see one built on 7/10 so I'll give that a go.

graphics issues

Hey I just got my g2. Incredible phone, there is a learning curve however. I'm not quite used to the dimensions and button the back, but I have only been using it for a couple days so I'll give it t some time. The screen and camera are the best I've ever seen(not counting the nokia1020).
The biggest issue for me right now is performance. Switching in and out of apps and navigating apps is pretty choppy. Had this been 3 years ago the speed would be great but I'm comparing it to my galaxy s4 and iPhone 5 side by side and the scrolling on some web pages and apps is frustratingly slow. I was wondering if anyone is seeing the same kind of performance?
No, my phone is flying. No lags whatsoever. I would try a master reset and see if that helps.

Since your coming from anexus 4, which was my favorite android phone besides the camera. How are you doing with the size difference? I have larger than average size hands and I have to bounce the phone around in my hand to reach things I need to press at the top of the screen. Never had that problem with the nexus or my gs4.
I'm coming from a N4 too (I'll get the phone the G2 this week) I'll miss vanilla, but the battery life, camera, and larger screen will MORE than make up for that with the G2.
do me a favor and try youtube, asphalt 8, riptide gp, etc etc. (heavy 3d games) everything is choppy for me but the choppiness is rhythmic for some odd reason
First off, what launcher are you using? I think alot of people that get lagged that are caused by a poorly written app, and assume its the phones fault. Only good way to tell will be factory reset, and run it that way a bit. All good then add ur apps back one at a time, testing it between apps, and that will pinpoint which app is the issue...
I've been getting some random gitter/lag with the ui as well, just tested in antutu got 30,000 then a second time got 26,000. Isn't the g2 supposed to get like 35k?
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk 4
Just so I could make a statement based on fact I downloaded Riptide GP 2 to see if I got any lag or stuttering, I played 2 races with no lag or slowdown. Then I went into the graphic settings but everything was already maxed out by default, I ended up playing for 20 more minutes and its a very fun game lol. So yep it just went thru the game like butter the way you would expect it to..

Weird lag

Hi everyone,
My note 4 seems to start lagging recently after I play games on it for a while. When I close the game, the phone itself lags as well. It's very obvious too when I'm just scrolling through my drawer. Has anyone experienced this? The few times I noticed the lag was also when my battery was low, <25% and I thought it may have been power saving mode. However I checked and power saving mode was off. Also when I use the facebook app any anytime, it has a scroll lag. I noticed that too when I'm browsing on certain sites (ie; XDA).
I tried factory reset and that did not fix the issue and I have the phone too long to exchange/refund
Dont worry bro
Use nova launcher for best experience

I am having the same problem.intalled Nova turned off s voice. UGH PLEASE HELP
I never experienced any lag using stock launcher!, i want to stay my phone the way i first bought it.
if i change my launcher it feels like im not using note 4 anymore!
I'm already using nova. I tired stock browser but sites like XDA still lags when I scroll. Also when I game for a while, the game will start to lag. When I exit to home screen the phone itself lags too! I have to clear the ram for the phone to go back to normal. The weird thing is, the ram was only 2.22gb/2.72gb, it's not even close to max!
Stop clearing your ram now
Try uninstall some background app like facebook and see the effect
Hm interesting, after I last cleared my ram. I've been gaming for 2hrs straight and 0 lag... I've swapped back and forth from game to homescreen to whatsapp etc and no lag at all... Only thing different is I'm charging my phone at the same time. Think charging has something to do with it?

Just got myself an exynos note 4. Very nice phone but aside from a little touchwiz stutter, games such as real racing 3 and clash of clans stutter. My nexus 4 ran them fine. Did a quick antutu benchmark to see whats up and i got 49000 on antutu without flight mode on. What do you think? Benchmarks say my phone should handle them with ease but thats not the case. Anyone with a solution? I already disabled many samsung and google apps. Lag is evident only in games.

You're not using Power Saver, are you?
My note's benchmark seemed normal and I play Clash of Clans as well and it seems okay. The game I play most often is Summoners War and that is what's causing the lag. Come to think of it, I think I had an issue with the lag on my Nexus 5 as well but I might have chalked it up to the phone being old so when this happen on my brand new note 4, it raised a red flag. But still, I'm still confused why the game would lag my phone even thought it there's plenty of memory available.

I just tried clash of clans on my brothers s5. Turns out the stuttering is even worse. Im testing this by zooming in on the base and scrolling rapidly back and forth on a canon for example. I will test this on my nexus 4.i too thought coming to a phone as powerful as the note 4 i shouldnt see any stutters but if its happening on an s5 then i guess its not a hardware issue on my phone but rather an android thing? Tested this also on my iphone 6 with no stutters at all.

I was having the same problem, so believe it or not, the way I stopped it was going into application manager and disabling S Health. I don't know how or why, but this stopped all the lag. After installing Ktoonez kernel, I thought maybe I could turn it back on, but when I did, I started getting the same lag again. I hope this helps because I know it is frustrating

I second Keith's recommendation. My 2-day-old, rooted Note 4 was lagging and was particularly noticeable when scrolling through some web pages or content in Flipboard. But it lagged in other places as well. Also stuttered or paused when playing podcasts. I tried installing Nova Launcher, I tried removing Wanam Xposed, and some other things but it finally went away when I started to disable various Samsung bloatware. The success occurred after I disabled SHealth and some other things (I just happened to do a few all at the same time). I suspect SHealth was the culprit because it was probably running in the background all the time, trying to track my step count.
I ended up keeping Nova Launcher since I gives me some useful customizations, and I love Wanam + Xposed, partly because it lets me get rid of Samsung's Search menu item that always used to appear in my notifications shade.
It's been over a week, now, and no more lag / stutter. Absolutely loving the phone, now.
I haven't gone back to re-enable some of the bloatware in order to confirm that SHealth was the culprit because, quite frankly, I have no interest in the stuff I disabled, anyway.
I have also disabled S health but I never had a problem with Clash of Clans when even I had S health Enabled.. whereas the other game I play (Summoners War) it always start to lag after an hr+ of gaming.
I already disabled s health through the app drawer but that does not solve the problem. Coc will run fine for a few mins and then start to stutter like its not optimized. To test for hardware issues i installed dead trigger 2 and injustice gods among us and they absolutely fly. The problem seems to be with coc. I am using an exynos note 4 on stock rom stock kernel. Any thoughts?

when your phone starts to stutter after some time playing games, it might be thermal throttling. depending on the game you can notice it more or less.
