Camera Slowness - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
When I take photos on the S5 and press the shutter button, it takes an age to actually take the picture and says "Hold the device steady until it finishes taking the picture".
Is everyone else getting this? I've tried resetting all settings and tried saving to the phone and the memory card but it's still happening.
Any help appreciated..
Cheers

In low light conditions the phone will increase shutter time, which means you'd have to hold the camera still longer + it takes longer to take pictures. Flash lights up the area enough to have a fast shutter time and take quick pics.
That's the theory at least.

Ah thank you.
I guess it makes sense but it's not always practical. I definitely would've preferred it if they'd kept it the same as on the S4.

Turning the flash on only prevents this because it adds enough light to the scene to keep the camera from going into picture stabilization mode. Turning off image stabilization will give you an instant shutter even with the flash off.

Turn off stabilization. That is meant for low light situations. No need to turn on flash

samsung epic shutter speed

i used an iphone 4 to take some pictures and I have to say their shutter speed is quite quick. Any way to get the Epic to do the same without quality loss?
Hello,
Actually, the camera on the Epic is plenty capable of taking VERY rapid shots.... Go to the Menu while in camera mode and tap on CONTINUOUS SHOT. Then hold the shutter button down, and you'll see
. Try different aftermarket, specialty camera apps and you'll see as well.....like ACTION SNAP.
Thanks,
Matt!

Our phones already take action shots seamlessly. Maybe I'm thinking that's something else. Here's one I just took of my coworker leaving the office done on the Epic.
does anyone know what that dang add me thing is on the stock camera app?

iso controls light sensitivity. high iso = high noise, but required for dark pictures.

"Photoshop" your self into another picture.
0. turn on add me.
1. Take a picture of a field
2. take a picture of your self.
3. It outlines you, and merges you into the other picture
...it does this horribly I might add.

dude! Triplets?

iPhone 4S has AE/AF Lock - I wish we had too.

Even though I suggested my GF to get the iPhone 3GS and 4S, I'm not a fan of iOS or any iDevice for that matter - I just don't like the lack of flexibility without jailbreaking.
Still, Apple has been able to do it over and over again, they find some missing feature, and nail it. They just implement it perfectly.
This time it's the AE/AF Lock.
I wish SGS II had this as an option, this would prove so useful with the autofocus problems it is having. And ofc it's a great feature both for still images and video.
If anyone knows about any fixes/patches/way to get this done on android/sgsII - This is the place to share!
The exposure lock will be available to apps in ICS .. i am hoping Google implementation of ICS camera will carry it too.
Keeping my fingers crossed ... i honestly feel the camera module on SGSII deserves better camera app capabilities
Could not agree more. I was freaked when realizing that it's not possible at all on our phone. Always liked that about camera+ from the apple app store

The SGSII has AF/AE lock. What drugs are you on? To AF/AE lock both at once, just hold down the shutter button on the screen. You will hear the beep and the focus box will go green. Now the AF/AE is locked you can pan the camera around and you'll see the focus is locked and the exposure doesn't change. Now you just let go of the shutter button and the SGSII will take the photo.
If you want just AF lock, you tap on the area of the screen that you want to focus at and you'll hear the beep with the box going green. Now you can move the camera around and you'll see that the focus is locked but AE is still active and adjusting the exposure. To take a photo in this mode, you tap the shutter button. If you hold the shutter button down instead, it refocuses and goes into AF/AE lock.
I've had this feature ever since I bought my SGSII in May.

It DOES work on video mode. SGS II has had this feature since day one. Stock Video Camera app just doesn't implement it. If you're a developer, it's easy to add to your app.
Here's a video I made testing no auto-focus & no auto-exposure for the SGS II...although this is for my private video recording app, not released & probably never will be.

Hi! That's amazing. Are you sure you can't share this app? It's the only thing missing from the whole android world at the moment.
I would enjoy paying for an app capable of this. And many people like me.

S4 I9505 - Photos always out of focus and always "shaky"

does anybody have the same problem?
its very hard to make a photo that is in focus and steady.
i have compared it to my old galaxy S2, and the S2 makes much better photos.
on the S2 every single photo i take is rock steady and in focus.
on the S4 its very hard to do that. every photo looks like i am shaking like an old man. it almost impossible to take a good photo.

Check the shutter speed on your photos.
Go to gallery/select the menu hard key/scroll down to details on the photo and should state shutter speed, iso, location etc
Tell me what they say on the blurred/shakey pics and iff different on the in focus shots mate.

it varies very much. from 1/17s to 1/1000s
but all are sometimes in focus and out of focus.
what i find is that the galaxy S2 makes perfect steady pics no matter what i do or even when i shake the S2.
on the S4 i have to be very very still and hold the cam very steady for a long time, then the chance is better to make a still foto. its unusable at the moment.
Has nobody found the anti-shake feature in camera settings?
Plus, you can take a photo by saying 'cheese', leaving your hands/fingers free to hold the phone steady

Press hardware menu key on camera then settings and scroll down to see Antishake it's disabled by default. It simply increases ISO so your images will in low light look slightly more grainy/noisy but this enables a faster shutter speed: less lightly to be blurred from motion or movement
the anti shake is turned on, but does not really improve anything.
yes ISO is set to auto. what would be the best manual ISO setting?
i am not a photographer so my knowledge about ISO is also shaky
but the general question is: why was the S2 always steady without changing any settings, and the S4 seems to need hard work to get good photos? or am only i getting this?
if you just take the phone out of the pocket and take a foto quickly,
do you guys get a steady in focus foto every time?
i could do this with my old S2, but not with the S4.

The latest firmware (i9505xxuamdm) has a firmware update for the camera. If your photos look shaky and out of focus even in daylight and sunny conditions, you might have a faulty camera. I have not yet had any focus issues and photos taken with my S4 are steady, even in low light, the most beautiful pictures taken with a mobile phone. So you might have a faulty camera module.
Regarding the 1/17 exposure time, I have just taken a picture now in very low light and the exposure time is just that, with an ISO of 320 and Aperture 2.2, and it is sharp and in focus (taken from the hand). Have you tried focusing first by touching the screen where you want the focus to be rather than pressing the shutter button directly?
camera firmware update sounds good. do you have the apk file for it?
Hi there all
I have this issue too. I have taken photos inside and outdoors with anti shake on and off and no matter what settings I use the pictures always appear to have blur due to shake on them. It's as if the camera always selects a really long shutter speed.
I have also applied the latest firmware update with no benefit.
Cheers

Same Problem
I had the same problem with out of focus/shaky pictures plus that sometimes when I wanted to turn on the camera to make pictures I received a camera busy message. The last 3 pictures that I've took with SG4 I had to use the best out of 8 picture setting to get a clear picture of a product that I make... I also noticed that even that I had better signal than HTC One or Iphone 3GS the internet was way slower compared to the other 2 phones and sometimes at home I had to turn off and on the WIFI, cause it wasn't working...

Have you tried drinking less alcohol when taking these photos?
And if that doesn't work, drink more!
Yup.. so annoying. On my last phone it took mostly clear photos. On this, you have to be still as a hair... it constantly uses low shutter speeds instead of higher ISO's making it use 1/16 shutter speed in the most inconvenient times. With my last phone (HTC Rezound), id use the cam under a bright LED flashlight and take steady shots of old paper photographs so I could post them online for friends. Im trying to do the same thing with the S4 and the pics keep coming out blurry, even when im completely still. Its a very bright light so idk why its choosing slow shutter speeds. I end up giving up trying to get a clear shot... ridiculous.
On another note... it does take very clear daytime pics. ....

Camera Delay Taking Photos.

Anybody else getting this. It's about a 2 second gap. I'm thinking it's only relatively low light but it's annoying and misses photos.
All camera apps seem to have the same delay between pressing the shutter and actually taking the photo so it has to be hardware.

hmm that's weird, mine only takes 0.5 secs even when it requires focusing. If I had focused before I pressed the shutter button, it takes the photo almost instantly.
If you have hdr on it has additional processing...if you have IA intelligent autofocus it had a delay to focus when you click shoot. If you just use manual focus and no IA it will fire as expected.

Try to tap to focus on anyhting you want to focus,it will be faster.

As the others said, be sure to tap to focus first.
Also, you can hold down the shutter button to force a focus and then let go to instantly take the shot. It locks the focus.
Mine does the same in low light situations. If tap to focus it still takes the same amount of time all together as I have to wait for it to focus still when I tap. And when I pan around its really slow. In normal or bright lighting I have no issue.
I think asia cnet's camera comparison just solved this.
They think there's post processing going on under certain low light conditions.
I have'nt checked being I'm still reading the article. If the shutter speed is stripped from the EXIF info we can be almost certain that's our delay.

Camera lag?

Do I have a setting wrong or something?
Has anyone had a long camera lag only some of the time? I haven't pin pointed it down but most of the time it takes the pic instantly but others it shows a message to hold camera still till it shoots the pic. Obviously I prefer it taking it instantly so what's the deal? Is it low light situations?

Yes. The S5 has a combined Image Stabilization/Night mode. When it gives you that message, you'll notice a small icon in the corner with a moon, a star, and a hand, indicating that it has gone into stabilization/night mode due to lack of ambient light. You can force instant shutter by disabling image stabilization.
Perfect answer thank you
