[Q] Unusually cheap prices for Note 3 in Sri-Lanka - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I'm from the UK but I'm currently on vacation in Sri-Lanka and last night I came across a shop selling Note 3's for £100. I held one in my hand and at least exterior wise it seems genuine. On the shelf it was written 'Vietnam version 2'.
At the time I was thinking that it was a scam / stolen merchandise (either a phone switch or a just a shell with no internals) but there are also adverts for similarly priced phones (not just note 3) in the paper as well as online classifieds.
I'm thinking of going back in a couple of days and ask to turn it on and run some benchmarks or something.
Anyone here know what's going on?

Potentially fake, stolen or maybe they've just got lucky.. run the usual tests if they allow you to turn one on.. check download mode, recovery and sensors etc

I was thinking of running CPU-Z but have you got any recommendations on apps I could run, I don't think they will allow me to handle the phone for more than a couple of minutes so they should be pretty quick (I did ask if they would let me turn it on and the guy did say it would be ok) .
Entering download mode is just removing the battery then volume down, home and power then a battery pull to cancel right?
Recovery mode is the same as download but with volume up as the first button and from there I can just reboot?

Download hold power and vol-
Recovery hold power and vol+
No matter if phone is on or off

That is probably a fake (and not a good one after the price).
There is an entire thread for that, please read that one first:

[Q] I have a true brick (I guess) on GT-I9000 Galaxy S - now what?

Today i flashed my Tab with Gingerbread 2.3.3 for the forth time after Moding it a bit while having the Galaxy S plugged in and of course Odin flashed both...
so probably it changed the bootloader on it and now the Galaxy S wouldn't respond to anything,
button combinations dont work
plugging usb and then holding Vol-Up + Vol-Down while slipping battery back does nothing, I even tried the mythical Hair dryer and that took me nowhere
... its dead.
I read somewhere that the JIG is not for my case so i skipped it...
now what? is there anything else i should try? if not, is taking it to good ol' Sammy going to do me any good?
or should i just consider it a very expensive piece of home decoration.
***PS sorry if i posted this in the wrong section.
i had a soft brick on a vibrant last night and the only thing that worked for me was pressing the vol up and down and THEN plugging in the usb to the computer.... then the software loader screen came up allowing me to USE odin AND FLASH stock tmo os

well, good for you but as for me.. that didn't do the trick.. I am here hoping to get a magical answer but almost sure that this wont happen.. sammy should expect my visit soon
I Know
Are you under contract? and did you buy the phone from a certified retailer? if so you can say that your phone shut off and wont turn on. i bricked my phone twice (HTC EVO) and took it back to sprint and the replaced the phone because it was a "manufacturing default". hope this helps!
well that sucks, know how you feel except mine had a bit better of an outcome. sux

well not exactly, i bought it when i was traveling and i am not quite sure our dealers here don't accept international warranties...
I just hope that they would know how to fix it, without costing me the price of a new one that is
You've probably thought of this already, but... are you sure your battery has enough juice left to boot up? Happened to me once and scared the heck out of me.

Thanks for the Idea but yeah, My phone was at 95% when i Killed it with a bad flash
Sounds like you might need a jtag for it. There is a post on the home page portal maybe a page or two back on how to do it yourself or the guy over at mobile tech videos has a jtag service. It is used for bringing back the hard bricked devices.
I soft bricked my Nexus S last week, freaking scary!
It took me 6 hours to just it alive by trying over 20 method!

Bricked Tab P1010

I was trying update to GB.... and by accident nudge the usb cable off! Now its Hard bricked! It has no response at all (cant power on, no display, nilch!!)! Any ideas how to rescue it?
the future is bright, the future is Galaxy.
use the search and look for : how to recover hard bricked devices, I am pretty sure there is something you can do, and if everything fails get it to Samsung repair service and ask for help.
good luck my friend, the only advice I would give to the people who own such devices is DO NOT FLASH YOU TABLET FOR NOTHING! IT IS A USFUL TOOL TO READ AND MAKE PHONE CALLS NOT FOR BETA TESTING ALMOST ANY AVAILABLE ROM OVER THE NET.

I have tried whats on the forum, pc dont recognise the phone, no button works at all and doesn't charge!

I check this but nothing for p1010 anyone has pinouts for it?

I had the same problem, left it plugged into the charger for few hours then managed to get it into download mode, also found it went into some other kind of download mode rather than recovery when holding pwr+vol up

Nothing! as long your device is still in warranty they won't charge you for it, they can check from your serial no. or if you still have the receipt. Go on samsung site and lookup your nearest service centre.
"in the brightest day in the blackest night, no Apple shall escape Android's might"
I've used this service before. Cost was total was $50 plus 1 way shipping to them. They paid the return shipping. I got it back within a a few days of them receiving it. Make sure to get unbrickable mod applied to it. Then you will never have to worry about bricking your tab again. Unbrickable mod is a hardware modification that makes your tab into a developer version of the tab. It kinda puts your tab into a a different download mode when you plug it into a usb port that lets your flash a new bootloader over usb if you accidentally delete yours.
http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-galaxy-tab-unbrickable-mod-repair/
And Rpatton I am sorry I didn't see your PM. I haven't been actually signed into xda very often until recently. I really recommend this service if you still have a tab in good condition. I was in the same boat you are in now for almost a year until I finally got off my ass a looked into getting it fixed. Although I haven't had to actually try using this mod, I know that it does work and there are tutorials out there about how to recover once you have this mod applied.
used them they are great a little hiccup with them but they fixed it got my tab back been using it like new since . Great service i would recommend it to anyone.

AT&T S4 Magic Box Fix My Phone

Please do not laugh at me. This is real.
I just took delivery of a AT&T S4. This is what the previous owner said:
It is only 4 months old. It was working perfect but I took the battery out and when I turned it back on and it won't reboot. It just shows an android laying down and says "no command"
When I opened the box and took the phone out, the green android was on and the phone booted into recovery mode. I tried to reboot from inside the recovery and it always booted into recovery. Frustrated, it shut it off and put it back inside the box.
As soon as I put it back to the box, the phone rebooted by itself. It bypassed the little Android and into AT&T globe logo. Then it prompted me to select the language. Now the phone comes alive!
Just to verify that the box has some magic, I took out 4 other S4 phones I have, 3 AT&T and 1 US Cellular. All of them self-booted after I put them inside the phone box. I have no idea why and how this happened. They do not self-boot in their own boxes.
I tried some other phones. The S2 did not work. One S3 booted, but the other S3 did not self-boot.
I can't explain this. I have another SGH-I777 which does exactly the same thing. But that I777 does not self-boot right away, but randomly.
Have you guys seen this?
I wonder how many people are gonna go try and put their broke phone back in the box
Lol this might be taken down since there's no point of it
I know you guys do not believe this. But this is just true...

I think it should stay. it's pretty amusing
I'll try to make a video when it is quiet....
Former Radioshack employee here. I can confirm this is indeed true. The boxes do have a technical merit about them. During the activation process, I'd read the IMEI off the box, grab a SIM, grab those numbers, and once it went through the activation portal, I could hear the phone turn on through the box. Most customers thought I was playing some kind of joke or trick, but once they saw that the box was sealed, they freaked out. Many people turned and ran out the door, fearing some kind of dark magic or evil force, but it was really just your new two year contract taking your life and soul away from you. The phones in the box knew this, and as stated before, once activated would become self aware.
Here is the Youtube video. Believe or not. I think it is just coincidence somehow.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tymkj6aE7fw&feature=youtu.be
Cheers.
I read that is how they cured Hepatitis C. They put it in the box and out popped a cure.
I mean, I'm sure an NFC tag had nothing to do with the phone magically turning on.
I do not really know. But it happened to fix my S4 which was stuck in recovery forever.
But my Verizon S4 is still stuck at logo....

WOW
may have an NFC chip in the box? Very strange indeed.
I find it odd that we never see what is below the top section of the box. You also do not push any buttons to confirm the device is off.
My guess:
Phone is sleeping and there is an NFC tag that is programmed to reboot the phone.

So basically you still think this is all fake. So be. I'm not going to answer more question.
Also, do me a favor, put your phone in sleep mode. Put it in your box and see if it wakes up?
This is my first video in years and I just wanted to rush it done. I do not gain anything from all this. Now it is waste of my time answering all the questioning....

Until now, who else asked you any questions?
Being a naturally curious person I couldn't let this slide without doing my own test. BLUF: My phone rebooted when placed in the box.
Explanation:
I had to take my Incipio Slim Armor case off to fit it in the box. This is where I noticed just how tight of a fit it was (insert your own jokes). I placed my device in the box and the extended power menu popped up (thanks Sho!) and then the device rebooted.
TLDR The box is so tight it holds the power button down.

[Q] A501. Can I boot with broken power button?

Hi,
The power button is broken on my Acer A501.
For 1 year I kept it going without rebooting. Plugin it to the wall would turn it on from deep sleep.
Now just messed up unplugging a usb thumb drive and the tablet frozen and discharged completely.
I can't find a way to force it to boot anymore.
Is the a way force it to boot without using the power button?
Any help would be very appreciated.
Thanks,
Francois

Hey Francois, the answer is no unfortunately. However, several people in the past have had the same issue, and basically they take the case apart and glue the PWR button back on. Should be some old threads in the Q & A which cover what they did to repair it.
Seems these tablets are starting to fall apart this year. Mine just hard bricked for it's final time last night. None of our good tools can get it back, and I'm one of the "BrickMasters":laugh:
If you were in Moscow, I would just let you change your mainboard, into my case (PWR button works)

Thank you Moscow Desire.
I don't have the pleasure to know Moscow yet, unfortunately.
I'm aware of the the button repair with glue or soldering, which is beyond my technical abilities. I do software, not hardware... I know I could get it repaired for $50 in USA, plus shipping, but that approaches the cost of a replacement tablet as prices have lowered a lot. The A501 was a great, awesome product 3 years ago, but its age starts to show...
Before sending for repair or thrashing it, I wanted confirmation it can't be jump started... Your answer confirms it is not possible.
I'll check with some more technically inclined friends to see if the can fix it.
Thanks,
Francois

Yeah, pretty much they just aren't worth the cost of repair. Heck, I think you can buy a working one for about $50 bucks anyhow.
But the glue method is pretty easy I think, if I remember right.
Here's a link to the service manual

But hey, if you're gonna thrash it, how about sending me it's mainboad?
My bootloader memory partition got corrupted beyond repair yesterday (my little girls entertainment).
I have an A701 (nice display, but rest of tablet is junk. No more Acer for me) Think I will got Sammy for the newer 10.1 model.

Thankd for the manual. I might give it a try, with some help.
Do anyone know if it could be booted up using a docking station? http://www.acer.ae/ac/en/AE/content/model/LC.DCK0A.001. I see a Power button on the remote control. Or directly via the dock pins, maybe shorting some?
Just checking.
Thanks for any info.

Nokia 6 on Amazon USA

Amazon is selling two versions, one with ads for $179 and one without ads for $229. I'm wondering if anyone knows whether the ads version will get OS upgrades and security updates at the same time as the non-ad version? The main reason I'm looking to buy one is the promise of fast upgrades/updates. I'd like to save $50 but not if it means Amazon has to approve upgrades/updates before releasing them.
https://www.amazon.com/Nokia-Unlocked-T-Mobile-Exclusive-Lockscreen/dp/B071VZKDDP/ref=sr_tr_sr_1?
I was wondering the same thing, but to me I am going to get the non-ad version. I know myself and have a feeling the ad's will affect the performance as well as annoy me to no end
I've had an ad version Amazon phone before (Moto G4) and the ads were totally not a problem. If you have a persistent notification, such as a weather report, then the ad is just about 1/3 inch tall and the width of the screen. After awhile you even forget there are ads. They're only on the lockscreen, so no effect on performance. With the G4 the bootloader was locked on the ads version (to prevent people from removing the ads) and probably will be as well on the Nokia 6. What I don't know is whether OS upgrades and security updates will be affected on the ads version.

I saw a couple of negative reviews on amazon, they were talking about screen discoloration as well. I would contact amazon and see what they tell you.
Unfortunately it looks like they are sold out of the ad free phones
I have two Moto G5 Plus Amazon Prime with ads The updates non-existent compared to the non-Amazon retail version of the same phone. The bootloaders are not unlockable if you buy the ad version, not even of you pay the extra $50 after the fact.
If you want a decent phone with fast updates, get a used Nexus 6P on Swappa.

Ye to enter recovery mode some information say to press volume down + power while off and some say volume up + power however that did not work for me.
The only way I was able to do it was to follow these steps.
Enable USB debugging option from setting>developer option>. (To enable Developer Options, go to About phone and tap the Build Number 7 times.)
Download ADB and fastboot driver and install it on your PC.
Connect your phone to the computer with USB
Open CMD from ADB location folder (Go to ADB install location and hit alt+D then type cmd in address bar and hit enter)
Test the connectivity using the following command: adb devices
You should get the following: List of devices attached …………………… device
From here to get into recovery mode use the following command: adb reboot recovery
I will say be very careful while in adb as to what you type and make sure everything is correct before you do so.
Rather than follow this it may be easier to for you to just google "How to enter recovery mode using adb" and follow instructions there.

Keep USB cable connected either through computer or through power supply, restart your device. Hold volume down + power while device starting, you should see plenty of options, which are NOT usable at this moment.
I saw so many people are messing with this Nokia 6 device hoping that they could root it ?? Just to let you guys know, it's not possible yet to root this device. Without root you can't flash anything on it..
In my opinion, whoever is in struck during flashing/updating something using some images, bricked their device temporarily. You just need to wait until we get things done with rooting method for this.
Yeah, I had it
Got this phone today, but WiFi can't connect to our open network in the Office, it's not even showing the network, while my Sony Xperia Z4 is connected and so is my LG TABLET. Have you guys even experienced this, or it's just my unit? Thanks

I was able to flash mine. I had to as manually installing updates apparently soft bricks the phone. I was told when I bought mine it had the stock firmware on it but that was a lie.
Getting it into Emergency Download Mode in order to flash it is a bit of a pain though. I just wish I was able to get the stock firmware from Nokia to put on it like every other major phone company provides.
