I've read over the forums quite a few times and am stumped. For some reason i cannot get rooted again after SBF flashing to 2.1. I've used the one click root program and while it says the root was successful, i go into adfree, titanium backup, and wifi tether and all tell me that i am not rooted. Super permissions doesn't seem to work either.
I've flashed my phone six times and have had the same results, so i was wondering if anyone else had this problem or could help me out. I just want to root and get back to 2.2 again, but i don't see why I'm having such difficulties when I've had success before in the past. I'm trying to give all the information i can, but there isn't really much to it. I followed all the steps in the HOW TO downgrade 2.2 to 2.1 link in this very forum.
If anyone can help me or tell me whats going on, I'd be in their debt forever.

Ok the seventh time was in fact the charm. I just upgraded to 2.2 without root and then SBF flashed to 2.1 again and now when i root, it actually takes and adfree tells me im rooted and super permissions kicks in. I could just not figure out what was going on because it didn't make any sense. It still doesn't, but hey problem solved so i'm not gonna speculate. Anyways thanks for the time.

Please read that in its entirety. This is such an easy process that anyone who gets lost or messes it up, might not want to try it in the first place. I'm being as honest as possible, not trying to be insulting.
Ultimately, S=On is part of the un-root process, soooo, you're back at scratch. This means you would need to start back at the top of that post above and follow the instructions on how to root your phone/get S=Off.

i understand BUT when i run visionary it tells me already rooted.... but when i type in su it says permission denied....
We're going to need some additional details. You on 2.2.1? Have you restarted your phone since and tried again?
I'll spell it out for you - it really is dead-simple...
(***paraphrasing the OFFICIAL instructions in the thread I linked to above***)
- Enable USB Debugging
- Extract the root.rar in the original post - MAKE SURE YOU PAID ATTENTION AND NOTICED THERE IS A ROOT FOLDER WITHIN A ROOT FOLDER - a nested folder. You do NOT WANT THIS. You want just one /root folder on your sdcard, within it at the .sh scripts.
- Install VISIONary
- Attempt Temp Root
- Run Terminal emulator, type su and follow the instructions in the original post to execute the script - reboot.
- When your phone comes back up, run VISIONary again
- Attempt Temp Root
- Attempt Perm Root
There is really no way to mess this up. I have done this on 6 MT4G's, so if it's not working, you didn't follow the instructions - no doubt, no question. You don't need ADB - you can do this all from your phone with a file explorer (I use EStrongs) and a terminal emulator (I use Android Terminal Emulator).
I'm surprised this hasn't been moderated yet...

What do you mean it "tells you already rooted"? I am rooted and just running VISIONary - that is, launching VISIONary - it doesn't tell you anything. If you click Temproot now, is that when it shows that?
You know you have to first do Temproot and then do Permroot, right? From what I've seen, you can't "over root," so honestly, I highly recommend starting over again. If possible, I would literally type out each and every step you're taking. Maybe it will show us where you're messing up.
Try a different version of visionary... r11 is my preference

Good call. I thought about that as soon as I finished my last reply - i.e. check the VISIONary version.
I've been using r14 since my first MT4G and haven't had a single issue on any of the MT4G's I've used it on.
guys loook.... i am using r11 when i click root now.... it says already rooted i can access the clock work recover and everything but s is on and i dont have super user permission.... i turned the s on but now i cant turn it of. i dont have super user permission in terminal

ok finally i got it. but now it wont let me flash the stock reocovery image i tried in adb and terminal in terminal it says file not found. and in adb sending reovery<3948kb> falled< status malformed help..... i have to send this back tomorrow

i had to unroot it restart the temp root again then permroot.
done ... i flashed stock recovery....

Hi there everyone,
I want to root my Desire HD, but I don't want to install any custom roms, radios, etc. I only want to root my HD so I can install apps that require root. I see no advantage in installing any custom ROMs, so I want to leave that alone.
What's the best way to go about this? I've found this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834427. Do I need to do anything else, except what is in this guide? I'm terrified of bricking my phone!
Could I brick my device if I made a mistake with the above guide, or S-OFF?

Sorry for the question (no doubt it's been asked before), I've rooted my old HTC Hero before, found that easy, but this I'm confused!
Hi there. I'm actually quite a noob at all this since rooting is all new to me but seems you and I went after similar threads because I also read that guide to rooting the DHD at first. But after some further reading I discovered this is actually a much more difficult method of rooting (maybe because it's older?).

After I've ran that step - do I have permroot and I don't need to do anything else? I only want root, not custom ROM's.
I'm scared of doing the permroot, sounds like I'll break my phone if I even attempt it! Is there any way to ensure it will work?
Yeh you will be perma rooted if you follow the steps. About ensuring it will work, this is something I am now looking into myself. I'm getting the impression that it's possible to create a copy of the stock rom even without the perma root and using that to do a recovery in the event of a root failure. Though I would have thought perma root would have been needed to do a recovery in the first place....
I've got a thread below yours where I'm still trying to get a clear answer as to how to do all that. If I find out I'll let u know =P

By "if you follow the steps" - do you mean I only have to follow step 1 for perm root? Or more than that?

Go all way through these steps from 1.1 to 1.6. Once you've done 1.6 your phone should be rooted. Just download the terminal emulator from the market and do that last thing that is mentioned to test the perma rooting. If that works then your good.
Oh just so you know the temp root option in Visionary is apparently completely safe and won't harm nothing because it makes no changes to the system partition.
Not sure about the WWE RUU. I'm not sure it will be compatible with your current ROM (Only thing I do know is that if it's older then your current it won't work). Don't know how to flash it either tbh, that's something I ain't found out yet =P
I used the info on this page: *android.modaco.com/content/htc-desire-desire-modaco-com/310873/possible-hboot-downgrade/* it didn't downgrade the hboot, but that might be something to work on.
CHANGE STEP 3.4. "change it to 1.15.405.1" don't do that, change the "2.20.502.1" in the misc.img from your aria to 1.25.502.2
Oh and you'll need either a Temp root, or a Shell root for adb

Anyway, so why are you guys going back to 2.1? I am surprised not to see more discussion on 2.2 in this forum, but I don't frequent it much since I don't own the Aria myself.

I went back to 2.1 because the 2.2.2 version that AT&T released was extremely slow, and my touchscreen would become unresponsive.

How do you get a temp root or shell root with the new HBoot still in-place? If temp root is possible, then can't you install clockworkmod and get permaroot?

I got a shell root from super one click root (forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682)
after I downgraded to 2.1 I got z4root to get a temp root.

I've been reading up on this and the skinny is that the HBOOT image controls the S-ON and S-OFF flags of the NAND RAM in the device. Even with a temp root shell, you can't write to a partition with its S-ON flag set. This normally includes all the partitions on the phone except the data partition, so trying to root the device requires some sort of interaction with the HBOOT image to turn off the S-ON flag for the recovery and system partitions to properly root a phone.
In short, if and until someone hacks hboot_liberty_7227_1.02.0000_101104, your phone is unrootable.

Help me out, I may be thinking in the wrong direction, but I've been dealing with my nook which is why I thought of this.
Is there not a way to write an hboot to an sd-card or connect via usb at start to make the aria think that the sd-card or the usb connection is the corrected hboot, thus being able to modify?

There may be. When I first got my Aria, the rooting procedure involved an HTC signed update that you fooled the hboot into partially loading, then swapped the sdcard with the root package. It involved some complex timing issues where you had to run adb in a loop and plug/unplug the usb cable at appropriate times.
I've been searching the net for that procedure and I can't seem to find the right search terms, or I'm just not looking in the right places or something, but I know that's how I did my Aria before there was an unrevoked plug-n-root.
I have the procedure u are looking for i think...let me know if this is what u were after because i have an archive of saved documents I have copied from forums in the past...GOOD LUCK!

May I have a copy of said process? Currently the only way is to buy a very expensive hardware called XClip. I have managed to get the updated 2.2.2 Stock ROM rooted but not deodex or EXT3 FOR ap2sd trying to play with some files from another source to get hboot s off.

That process does not work with the new HBOOT. That's why unrevoked doesn't work. Having root access does not unlock NAND.
Currently, the only way known is via hardware tools.
It works. I managed a work around for 2.2.2 update
Hey everyone I am in the second phase of testing my work around with the new HTC Aria update from ATT. I managed to load the update and keep my phone rooted. I am now in the setup mode with no bootloop.
Running into a couple of issues with the new radio but I believe I know how to fix that as well. Keep you all posted and once all bugs worked out I will post my findings and HOPEFULLY MY ROOTED ROM.ZIP with instructions.
IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED.....TRY TRY TRY and TRY I did and I am 99% there.

You are right this might be the wrong thread. But I managed a work around with the new update 2.2.2 and the HBOOT 1.0X. As soon as I can confirm without a doubt that it works and will be able to repeat the process successfully with my husband's ARIA (unfortunately we love hacking things and tend to buy multiple devices) I will be more than happy to share the results.

Perhaps I misread (or we're talking past each other). You do have, in fact, HBOOT 1.02.0000 on your Aria, and managed to write to the system partition?
Yes & No. I'm stuck on couple of things. First the will temporary give me root access but then it locks up saying I don't have busybox. I'm rooted but no s-off. I also noticed when I reboot into recovery I go into CWM 2.5.0.1 but other times it boots into CWM 2.5.0.7. When that happens I loose my unknown source in settings>application. Again, if this is the wrong thread, I really am sorry.
I googled alpharev and some others who have worked on rooting. Found some cached pages from Jan when they were testing to root/s-off the Aria. Basing my work on that and couple of other devices that are similar to the Aria.

My only problem is connecting to T-Mobile's 3G network, I can only connect for 4-5 mins before it switches back to Edge, which is terribly slow. I've read that this has been an issue for some people and I tried to remove the sim card, change the APN Settings but nothing seems to help.
I read something about updating to newer radio but I'm not sure how to do that, any help would be appreciated !

Go into your settings menu>About Phone and tell us your baseband version please.
I should note that I've not really heard of this happening before and to me it sounds like you're just not in a 3G area.

You might not have 3g in your area. Other than that it sounds weird

-So, first step is rooting your phone. You can do it without oem unlock and not losing all your archives. But I did this and I just copied all files again(Yes, it's boring to wait all the time transfering archives but it's better).
- Now you have to flash Clockworkmod (It's the same topic, showing how to do it).
- Then flash through CWM (ClockWorkMod) the update. GRH78 is 2.3.1, GRH78C is 2.3.2, GRI40 is 2.3.3. Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967953

Well, I just pulled a coverage map of the strip and it seems that there are spots of worse coverage so it all depends on where you are. Nonetheless, I will help you update your radio or even update to 2.3.3 altogether as long as you're willing to root your phone and flash a rom (you can use download and use the update that Google pushes out but a lot of people have problems with it so I think its just easier to root, flash the rom, then just not root again once you have the new ROM). If you want me to help you do this, just say so and tell me if you have a mac or a PC.

The method he linked only works for builds prior to 2.3.3 which is a category you fall into. That guide is quite nice and works very well but it will not unlock your bootloader, which means your SDcard partition for your files and music and pictures etc won't be wiped. If you intend to stay rooted, I don't suggest using that guide but instead using the one I wrote here:

Now before you do either, tell me if you want to unlock your bootloader (if you plan to stay rooted after doing the updated) or want to leave it locked (if you plan to remove root after updating).

Whichever is easier to be honest and requires less steps, you tell me haha. I don't mind either option.
Or you could just wait for the official 2.3.3 OTA if you don't want to root. Might get it quicker if you do a checkin request. Simply dial *#*#checkin#*#*

lol the difference between the two is literally two command. if you unlock the bootloader you add one command (fastboot oem unlock) and you use the command "fastboot boot" for the locked method where as you use fastboot flash for the unlocked. After that the two are exactly the same so if you want to stay rooted after updating (so you can use apps like AdFree, Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, etc or want to install custom roms) you should unlock your bootloader.
To be completely frank, if you don't mind unlocking the bootloader I've had some people have trouble with the command "fastboot boot" which is why I changed my guide to use "fastboot flash". What I'm saying is I recommend using my guide, which again you can find at the link below. Remember though, before you go through any of the steps copy the contents of your SD card to your computer. Actually that is a step I should really add lol

Now I'm not 100% sure if this will update your radio but it will give you the newest update. I'm currently trying to check on that so you can get everything done at once (if it doesn't do the radio there is another file you can install right after installing the ROM that will update your radio. That way you'll be 100% up to date)
EDIT: Yes, it does contain the radio, so that will put you 100% on 2.3.3 with the updated radio.
