Xperia Z3 expected at the IFA 2014 IN August!!! - Xperia Z1 General

Just a couple of weeks old, the Xperia Z2 and Sony is already working on its newest flagship, the Sony xperia Z3.
What is expected??
Brand new design,
Newer display technology,
Faster CPU/GPU
More ram and more internal memory!
Why is Sony working so rapidly with flagships?
Director Kurozumi Yoshiro told Japanese media, that with all the technical evolutions in mobile devices, it's too hard to compete with a yearly cycle, so that they are forced to go ahead with a 6 month cycle, to make sure, Sony is still in competition!
What are your thoughts, your expectations and your wishes for the new upcoming "Z" device?
Drop your comments

If they could keep the software up to date on the "obsolete" £500 6 month old handsets with features and bug fixes then great. But they're going too fast and leaving people with expensive handsets with half finished, broken or missing software features. Hardware tends to be on the better side, imo

Could this be a possible new design sony will be revealing?
A display with no edges and no bezels?
What are we to expect when there is a complete new design being worked on?

I can guarantee you that that isn't the device that's going to be released as the Z3. Not to be rude, but no one here will have a clue what the Z3 or any future device is going to be. (or they do know, but can't say)

Read what I wrote. I did not say it's the device, I just asked if this could be a possible design!
Just to make sure there are no misunderstandings!!!
Regards!!

I can guess it's omnibalance design

Can't believe what Sony is doing right now, I understand that you plan ahead on future products but this is too soon especially seing as the Z1 came out in October and now Z2 . I remember getting a pone and using it at least 12months before feeling outdated

Not at all impressed. The biggest issue is that the flagship we bring now won't be the most important 6 months down the line, and hence we won't get updates too quick (same with Samsung as well, though they tend to update both Note and S flagships together.), which is extremely stupid and a reason why I might move away from Sony.

well... i cant afford buying a new phone that often.... and i dont plan to for the future... i have had the arc s, S, Z and now Z1... maybe i will wait until the Z4 arrives before buying my next phone hehe

At last who cares about Z3? I don't, I care about Z1 and some aspects of Z2, just to compare them both. We have to focus to develop a massive Developing Section for Z1, this is what we should do now.

All ive got to say is Sony really lol

You know who hates this more than users trying to keep up with next big thing? Stores who have inventory that's at risk of being discounted every 6 months vs every year. If I were stocking Sony I'd have a very strong contractual obligation that Sony covers the costs of big wholesale price decreases. Either that or I'd stock a very small amount of devices.
It's hard enough getting Sony phones in the States. Stuff like this is another reason retailers and carriers will not want to carry them.

galaxy s to s5 took 5 years, z to z5 in 2 years, really sony is catching up

Going by what they said about releasing a flagship every six months, im pretty sure the Z3 is coming this year
But i wonder how long can Sony keep this rhythm
By next year we'll have 5 flaships still elegible for updates, not counting the rest of the Sony lineup

Well I have other sources, where people will be surprised and probably real mad, because other companies are thinking about starting the same tactics with 6 month flagships!
Can't mention who, but those are really big known high end producers
Sony is just the first to start off!

its poor to admit such things publicly , each phone has their own advantage.
s3- fast and cutting edge features
iphone - reliable
nexus - google experience
sony - best looking phones
Off course it can't compete right now without a single handset 100% Sony.
What we have available is Sony Ericsson's devices with Sony brand.
Next year will be the year.
I really need a decent display with a lot of power under the hood.

You spelt "totally locked up and uncustomisable" wrongly.
They might not compete with iphone5 or Galaxy S3 but not all people are looking for these high-end phones. Not everybody are flashaolic nerds like me. I know a lot of people who still use their phone as a.... PHONE!!! In this category Sony is still a good choice for a phone.(Even I never owned one)
I agree Sony is by far the best looking and best screen android phone, but the miss some points like locked bootloaders and not so good cameras.
I had a xperia s and the device from specs was very nice, from specs I would prefer it as the S3 processor beast. But then with the use you miss important things like USB on the go (not workink but promised) and the 12 mp cam was a piece of SH....
If that happens, maybe Sony will take Samsung's place. Sony devices are in fact, powerful with great support (Also AOSP)
And the system is 200% cleaner than TouchWiz.

it's nonsense to rival iphone. Android doesn't rival, Android beats.
If I am not wrong (stopped stalking for latest releases after buying the S3), Sony still doesn't have a quad core flagship, so if you were indeed a Sony lover you would have already accepted the fact that right now they don't aim for specs (like Samsung does obviously) and like to provide a nice quality phone with decent price, specs and software (updates + aosp release). This is not at all a bad thing and I like where Sony are headed in the Android world.
Sony has cut back a lot, austerity for them due to a loose wallet subsidising blueray with the PS3. Imagine SGS3 costing 20% of its production costs
They hardly make anything themselves now. It's like Honda giving up and rebranding Kia's instead. Karma me thinks, for Sony Music being fascist psychopathic murdering scum

Why does everyone use iphone and reliable in the same sentence? What's not reliable with an android phone? If anything, an iphone is much more unreliable (not hardware-wise, more like software-wise. Have you ever actually owned an iDevice in real life? If you did, you'd notice there are a lot more freezes and app crashes than with android.
Also, how can it be reliable if it doesn't even have proper multitasking?
Sony's 2013 top devices will have S4 PRO,5" 1080p screens,2gb RAM,water resistance, dragontrail glass,Exmor RS 16.2 mpx and 13mpx with third generation dual LED and the sexy look that only Sony know how to do...
But we just can wait with the best device in our hands right now.
If Sony really puts some weight behind these words, and they use the ST-Ericsson NovaThor SoCs next year, they will blow everything out of the water. The STE processors will be manufactured by Samsung, so they will have arguably the best mobile manufacturing process out there for the moment, while having the ImgTech G6xx0's GPUs which seem to look pretty unchallenged in performance.
Up until now all of Sony's devices were just outdated by a good more than half a year. In the mobile space where we basically have 1 year long product cycles, that's half of a product lifetime. The Xperia T is a nice phone, but at this point in time it's basically the same internal hardware as the One XL/S and NA S3's, which are 6+ months old. Don't get me started on the previous "flagships".
Let's hope they can deliver. They have the hardware available to do it.

Funny you mention that Sony cameras are not so good when the SIII and Iphone 4s uses a Sony sensor.

Anyway, in the flagship they can´t compete, shure, but in the rest of the range, it has the best ones.
I currently have the SIII but below that Sony does better than Samnsung, in price/quality, at least in my country.

I can tell you that my xperia neo takes better photos then my s2 and my former xperia s. But not better then the s3. This was tested with the 4 phones in the same places and in same conditions. I m a sony fan. Allways had sony Ericsson phones. And tell you thay the xperia s is a great deception. I m not a great fan from samsung I had some y op devices and allqays had problems with them. But one I ensure you. S3 is by far better then any sony. Last I tell you if the xperia s had some features that it could have without problems, like otg usb, external sd, removable battery, and decent software for cam, I had prefere it has the s3.

thats another part of the story
I tried so hard analyzing but now at last I know their reasoning behind releasing Xperia S, Xperia P, Xperia U, Xperia Acro S, Xperia T, and whatever Xperia (ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ) phone they released this year. All along and all this time, those phones were meant to challenge Galaxy S2, HTC Sensation, iPhone4s and other phones from last year! What kind of mindset is that for a company? What have you become Sony? Argh!
The iPhone's implementation of panorama is a great example on why Apple are so good at creating user experiences for the lowest common denominator.
Yes, that's a nice way of saying it's made for stupid people. But making things for stupid people requires very smart ideas.

How Sony botched 2013

**This post isn't about the Xperia ZL. It's about the mistake Sony made in releasing two phones this year.
Way to screw up Sony. Hardly any public attention is being given to the ZL variant because you decided to release two phones with the same specs, but lavish all your advertising on the glassy backed one so you could market a waterproof gimmick. Sony made so little noise about the ZL version that everyone will ignore it. The developer support for the ZL is probably going to suck. And I'm going to bet you'll provide the Z faster OTA updates than the ZL too judging by how they've handled the launch. On the other hand, HTC is doing it right. One phone, one focus on marketing and support. You hear lots coming out of the Samsung advertising machine about the SG4. Anyone hearing much about the Xperia Z, let alone the ZL? Cricket....cricket.... Even XDA's mods think the ZL is safe to ignore because you can't even find the ZL forums from the main forum page, but have to go through either Devices or the sticky thread in the Z forum.
We all know that Samsung, HTC and Sony will probably stop updating the Android OS version on these phones in about 1 year (approximate). If I buy the HTC One I'm probably going to stand a much better chance of getting developer ROM's than I will on the ZL because you've allowed this phone to become forgotten and ignored right from launch. You should've taken a cue from HTC and just released the Z, and no ZL at all. Instead you've scattered your launch with 2 variants and made sure that we cannot buy both of them on every carrier. Stupid, stupid move. /facepalm. However, the SG4 and HTC One will be available on all carriers.
Nice going Sony. Whoever you have in charge of the "great idea" department who thought releasing two versions of the same phone with different feature sets and bodies but the same specs, only advertising one of them, and then deciding to only release one of them on some carriers and the other on the rest should be fired. You've just guaranteed yourself a 3rd place finish at best. Good job striving for excellence!.

I really don't care what they do and i am enjoying what i have between my hands.

I agree on 2 points:
1. No point in having 2 phones with same specs (Z and ZL) obviously the Z is far more popular and it seems like a waste of development money and resources creating the ZL when the Z is superior in design.
2. Not enough advertising and carrier support. Still no word on a North American release date and carrier support which is crazy. Sony are missing out on a huge market here by giving it to HTC and Samsung instead. Terrible move on their part.
However I just bought a Z and I think it's easily the best phone I've ever used.
I've used an S3, Note 2 and One X+ and the Z is superior in all aspects.
Sure, the new S4 and One is coming which will be better but for now the Z is the best phone on the market. It's well designed and the Sony UI is fantastic and minimal which I like.

Whether your report button gets this closed or not, we'll see how your point of view pans out when the Z sales tank behind the SG4 and One just like the "James Bond" phone did. Hopefully Sony will finally learn for their 2014 phone and not fragment their phones into irrelevancy.

Thank you, great points. I wish Sony had just scrapped the ZL. Because they're not going to make the Z available on all carriers, but are giving others the ZL instead, I can't see how this possibly could be good for Sony. If gm stopped typing nasty little temper tantrum little boy replies for a minute he'd get that I'd rather see Sony succeed than fail.

I'll take that with a grain of salt. Carriers and OEM's have a bad habit of pointing the finger at each other until you can never get to the truth.
The fact they have almost identical specs means that it'll be a case of anything working on the XZ working on the ZL unless I'm very much mistaken. /thread
ZL is crap. The design is ugly.

Ok here we go again.... What should I write this time....
The fact that YOU only hear about the HTC One and Galaxy S 4 (I don't hear anything about the Galaxy S 4 in the Netherlands) doesn't really have to do anything about which phone being better, Samsung/HTC spend more money/time advertizing their products. Heck I can't even remember ever seeing a commercial/Advertisement about a Sony phone in this case, so that's not something from 2012 or 13.
Edit: You can look at this in 2 ways:
1: Your way
2: Like someone said before, some people want to have a choice, some people don't have that much money, some people don't need waterproof.
So which one is the correct way? Answer: There is no correct way, it's all based on your perspective.

You don't have either of those phones (none of the 3 to be exact), but yet you're saying that the Z is worse? then the HTC One/SG4. Or did I get it wrong? " I'm considering HTC because Sony obviously still doesn't get it." So you're not choosing the Xperia Z/ZL only because of "poor marketing"? And there I thought that you were buying a phone and not a company, in the end who cares how companies advertise their products? If their products are good then it doesn't matter at all. Because in the end you don't buy an advertisement(At least you're not supposed to even though in this world people buy advertisements looking at how good crApple products are selling), you buy a product.
In my opinion it really doesn't matter (but I guess you noticed that already looking at what I wrote above). I'd rather be unique be the only one with an Xperia Z, instead of being a sheep and owning a phone that everyone else has. That's why I owned a Samsung Galaxy Note before the XZ instead of having a Galaxy S II for example.
Bottom line: The HTC One/ Galaxy S 4 aren't out yet (At least not here in Europe if I'm correct) the Xperia Z is, so even if you want to compare them in real life situations to see which phone is "best", YOU CAN'T!

You're missing the point. If a phone has a stronger presence in public perception and is properly marketed then as long as the design and quality are fine, they will sell more. If the phone is quietly launched and doesn't make many waves then there are side effects: Lower sales = less people using the phone. The trickle-down effect to this are things like less likelihood of many people caring about timely OTA updates, possibly lower developer support for ROM's once Sony decides to EOL the Z for OS updates, small number of accessories like docks and cases, etc.

Why do you think that I don't get the point?
The fact will always remain that we can't change anything about the situation. Of course better marketing means better sales.
If you know it better why don't you make your own company and show Sony the correct way (Not flaming you). Sony has been at the top of electronic devices for more then 3 decades so these people must know what they are doing. This is the first phone since from Sony since they were separated from Ericsson so maybe they need to do some more trial and error before things go better.

Sony becoming HTC..More phones this year..WTH!

Sony about to unleash four new Android smartphones later this year
Sony has been on quite a roll. At least as far as mobile phone launches are concerned. This year alone, five handsets in different segments have been launched by the company. These range from the high-end Xperia Z and ZL to the mid-range Xperia SP to the low-tier Xperia E and Xperia L. But it seems the company is not stopping at just these five.
According to the rumour, a certain Sony Xperia A, codenamed Dogo, will be added to the Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo’s line-up sometime in the summer months. It is said to have a 4.6-inch screen and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor. Other specs include 2GB of RAM, 32GB of native storage and a 2300 mAh battery capacity. The phone will be water and dust resistant, like the Xperia Z and Tablet Z, and will bring along support for NFC. An IR Blaster is also said to be aboard.
Also on the roadmap is the Sony Xperia UL, which we are dreading to see since it is codenamed Gaga. The phone is said to be very closely based on the Sony Xperia ZL and will also have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 under the hood. Other specs that have leaked of the Xperia UL say it will have 32GB of internal storage, 2GB of RAM and a 2300 mAh battery as well as NFC support.

So they are just gonna churn out phones after phones..Xperia Z will be forgotten even before the end of the year this way..And apart from that..why so many phones? And with same capabilities of XZ? Whats wrong with sony..Htc just learnt its lesson!
Releases of new phones won't make your Z any worse, FYI.
As long as Sony release 4.2.2 and hopefully 5.0 there's nothing wrong with them spamming the market.
Its not just about firmware..If you release so many phones in the market the brand value of a flagship like XZ decreases as your giving same features and water/dust proofing on lower end phones.. what was so unique about XZ? this was one of the key factors.
Well Sony are not going competed in the mobile market only releasing a couple of handsets pair year. If they did they may as well just go home. Think Apple are the only manufacturer that could truly do that at present. Remember Sony are struggling at the moment. So if this is there business strategy then so be it. I still love my XZ price depreciation and all.

Well company needs to capture the market, Z is already running on an old processor, flagship from HTC and Samsung are using faster processors already, they have to keep up the fight with them. That said i am sure Z will get upgraded to 5.0 and we should not care much about other phones.
XZ does not have an 'old' processor..Yes its S4 Pro but its clocked and implemented in such a way that its 2 time faster than nexus 4 with the same processor.
Everything can be run on an XZ that S4 and HTC one can do..There is nothing they can do extra. The jump from XZ to ONE is 30% and that is just benchmarks..In real life usage you will be able to use any app or game that the HTC ONE plays..Battery endurance test on gsm arena is same 48hr for both..Btw HTC ONE Gl graphics benchmark is just 30 fps..Which is lower than XZ
P.S- XZ is cheaper than HTC ONE AND S4...I got it for 644$ in my country..S4 and HTC ONE are coming for Around 773$
While I do understand you might feel bad that your Z will get outdated soon, you should also understand the situation Sony is in currently.
The Mobile business is THE most crucial business for Sony currently and their future depends on it. If they can consolidate market share further and grab the No.3 spot with a solid lead over HTC, Huawei, ZTE etc it will secure the future of Sony Group as a whole.
So new phones will definitely keep coming this year as Sony needs to survive.
I think it's a bad mistake. Dilution of the brand can never be a good idea. This is not a question about keeping up with the competition, if they wanted to do that, then they should have strived to release the Z with the 600 cpu. Releasing devices with that cpu in September or October will not make any impression because by then all eyes will have turned to the 800 cpu and whatever Qualcomm has to offer after that.
This strategy didn't turn out too well for the Xperia T, the phone that quick time forgot. Even the Xperia S is still regarded by most as Sony's flagship of 2012.
Sony should not get too involved in the spec race, well as far as cpus go anyway. The s4 pro on the Z is plenty fine and it's not it's weakness.
Sony's major problem is software development, everywhere you look the Xperia brand is being let down by software. Whether it be releasing phones with dated os and taking forever to update. The Xperia S is still waiting for JB while the galaxy s2, Samsung's phone of 2011 is about to get it if it hasn't already.
On top of that, you often get very weak software from Sony that takes ages for them to improve.
The software on my Z is its weakest link, whether it be the ui lag or the poor camera software that means you really have to take your time to get the best results from the camera.
Again and again, the hardware is being let down by the software.
Considering how lean and feature poor the Sony software is, it's really shockingly poor that it takes them so long to a) release stable builds and b) roll out updates.
Samsung's touchwiz is packed to the hilt with loads of software additions but yet, Samsung get it out quicker, up to date, and more stable than Sony can dream of right now.
For me, this is where Sony falls down really badly. They really need to bring in some excellent developers to turn things around.
Having a so called flagship waiting almost a year for a software update is just pathetic.
I said it before, I'll reserve my final judgement on the Z until I see the 4.2.2 software because I know it takes Sony linger than most to put out decent and stable software. Also the 4.1 has little or no software additions from Sony with the exception of the new launcher which I think is a bit ridiculous without an overview mode and the stamina mode and new camera app. Everything still looks the same from the gingerbread days.

Too many new phones will simply mean delayed updates.

I agree with your software complaint. The fact the camera takes 3 seconds to open is completely unacceptable, especially considering the Xperia S was so fast at booting up the camera. That said, I don't have too many problems with the software on the Z.
This is my first Sony smartphone, but I've noticed Sony almost always releases phones with outdated software AND dated computing hardware. The Xperia S was the first dual core Sony smartphone (I think) and it was months behind the Sensation, North American S2,and many others, all while having the same processor. Same goes for the Xperia T.
The fact that Sony intends to release so many phones this year probably has something to do with getting their high end devices to as many carriers/countries as possible. For instance, the Xperia Z isn't available in Canada. We're getting the ZL. In any event, coupling Sony's reputation for not releasing timely updates and the fact they're going to allegedly have 4-5 flagship devices this year, I'm not confident we're going to see many significant updates. Hopefully CM is able to keep us up to date!

It isn't a new thing from Sony anyway... I have never use smartphone other than Sony 's for my entire life and it was since somewhere around x10 to x arc period they started to release phones to different target user like flagship, middle range and budget phones In each year.
Sent from my Sony Xperia Z using xda premium
They simply replaced with smartphones their previous portfolio.
And this is natural. Every other OEM does that exept Apple.
This is good for the company to support all the market niches.
Would you rather they release phone to cater for everyone's budget OR be like apple and only sell expensive devices?
Sent via my HTC One using XDA Premium
^Seriously! Its not about them releasing multiple phones..Its about them releasing SO MANY phones..
Why not one for budget, mid-range and flagship? This is what i mean!
Simple. To make money. They know that if they release 12 phones in a year, for example, that 3 will sell REALLY well, 6/7 will sell fairly well and the remaining probably won't sell very well. But each one of those is still a sale which means more money for the company.
Sent via my HTC One using XDA Premium
The ZL is understandable as it's an experimental device to see how users react to the form factor. If it does well, I'm pretty certain Sony's flagship of 2014 will follow the same style. But if they release another flagship this year, that'll really piss me off, there is no need for a 600 cpu replacement for the Z. The Zs got all the raw power it needs. Flagship devices should stand for a year at least, the successful companies follow that principle. They can release a note style device this year but a new flagship smartphone, that demeans the Xperia brand, not to talk of the consequences for software support. They shouldn't go down that road again. Like I said before, software is their greatest weakness and I'd like to see signs that all resources are consolidated and brought to bare to offer the best possible user experience to a dedicated line of phones. If Sony don't address this software issue soon, I could conceivably go Samsung next year. HTC have proved that they don't quite no which way to go.
I also have a feeling that the gs4 will be the last cheap looking Samsung flagship we'll see. The s5 I expect will be different because it must be obvious to Samsung that that's it's weakest link too.
I also believe that Samsung is slowly beginning to accept that it's own proprietary stuff can't compete. We're likely to see them move away from super amoled to solux LCD displays and from exynos to snapdragon. We can see that happening already as 70% of s4s will use the 600 cpu. I don't think they'll have an exynos that can take on say a 2.3ghz cortex a15 snapdragon 800 cpu.

What's wrong with releasing 4-6 phones a year ? They need to address the whole market, not only high-end devices, but also low-end, mid-end and entry level. Now people seem to have a problem with too many phones being released... seriously, what the hell has gotten into you people ?

But Sony is releasing 4-5 flagship devices. From the looks of it, 3 are coming out with the Qualcomm 600 cpu, and likely another with the Qualcomm 800 at the end of the year. Good for them but I suspect it will leave those of us with Xperia Z and ZL's waiting longer for updates.

Then wouldn't the obvious demand is for sony to hire more software engineer than to demands that they stop making more phone?
Other thing from other post is that isn't The other obvious answer on why they cant just release 3 phone a year for different price range is because HTC has done it with their one series and by the looks of it, the strategy fails miserably.
And I think from the time of the arc, sony had released 2 flagship a year, so not sure why people still think they will only do just one. The thing about sony is it main market are where people buy PAYG and without subsidies. So people are really price sensitive. Releasing 2 flagship would land sony as the cheapest but most powerful phone on the block. The Z here in Malaysia can be bought at around us550. Making it slightly more expensive than the nexus 4 and S3. The hTC one and S4 are a cool us200 more. The xperia V, which are much better than the s3 is now at US300, making it even cheaper than the S2.
Interesting enough by doing what a lot of people here hates, sony climb to number 2 spot just behind Samsung, while HTC with their one series experiment that people here seems to love drop even lower. So I guess, they are on the right track.

All it looks like they're doing is throwing loads of phones out on the market and hoping one sticks and becomes successful.
The more devices they release the more delays it will cause with updates.
Bad move in my opinion but they obviously know better.
You do get the sense though with Sony that once a new mobile comes out their 'previous flagship' is dropped like a sack of *bleep* and it takes forever for anything to be updated.

To those of you with 4.4.4

I currently have a z2 which I love, but have a few issues with it. I am hoping someone that had a z2 can chime in and let me know if some things have been fixed on 4.4.4 For example, sometimes for no reason whatsoever my wifi wont connect, it wont even enable sometimes. I read that 4.4.4 fixes that. Since the z3 ships with 4.4.4 I was hoping that some of these problems have been solved. Calls on the z2 via speakphone are just plain impossible as well. The other caller hears nothing but echos, with or without noise supression on and trying all the different call settings. The earpiece is also pretty quiet, which can be frustrating in loud environments. I also find that web pages constantly have to reload with google chrome (which drives me insane!!!) and something I think should not be a problem with 3gb of ram. Also whats the deal with the auto brightness barely functioning on the z2? I wake up in the morning and am blinded by pure UV rays coming out of my phone screen, but when I go outside I cant see the screen. Auto brightness does not work well at all for me.
The last nail in the coffin for me is that I only have 16gb of storage and am already maxed out. I have a few big games that hog memory, but all of my media is on my external sd card. Does the z3 have the ability to store apps on the sd card?
I am hoping some of these issues are resolved, otherwise I will have to jump to the nexus, which I am not so sure about. I love my sony phone.
We all dont still have the update yet on our Z2 with 4.4.4 so we cannot said if something is fixed like the small issues, we can know that if we have and running on 4.4.4 !

As for 2014 being a bad one for Sony, well it's hardly surprising when a company makes idiotic choices, they pay a penalty for it. Releasing a new flashship phone every six months was bound to create the sort of confusion that would a) scare some potential customers away
b) piss the hell out of existing customers
c)devalue the brand to the point where it becomes painful purchasing their devices
Sony is an old school company struggling to fully embrace the new world order. Look what's happened to the other old schoolers Nokia, Blackberry, Sony Ericsson. They all failed as commercial entities. Sony bought out Ericsson and we hoped that would usher in a new dawn and philosophy. Things at first seemed promising but they've reverted back to type.
It won't be long at this rate when Sony ends up selling it's mobile division to the Chinese lol! It's failing and something drastic needs to happen. The z4 is looking now like a very important device. Make or break indeed! They really can't afford any screw ups there.
Don't get me wrong they've done Ok at times. The Z was very successful because of the novelty of waterproofing.
The Z2 was top notch but was delayed and by the time it became widely available, rumours of the z3 totally killed off its chances.
In between these two good releases, we had the underwhelming Z1 and the pointless Z3.
"One step forward and two steps backwards " should be written on the tomb stone of Sony mobile if it doesn't survive.
Sent from my D6503 using XDA Free mobile app
Sony clearly stated that they are not suffering because of their flagship range. They devalued their low-mid range portfolio by writing off goodwill. It has ZERO relation to the Z series.
It seems the 6 months cycle does work. They've been doing it since 2011 and never had to devalue their flagship range.
a) First time I heard that 6 months cycle "scares" customers. Maybe you solely?
b) As above
c) I don't know whether you're basing this on your perspective or overall customer's. Normal human don't feel pain when buying phones with a 6 months cycle:
-It's a just a phone
-No one changes phone half-yearly
And I don't find Sony selling its mobile division to Chinese companies funny.
Again it's based on your personal perception that the Z1 was underwhelming and Z3 was pointless.
Z2 was targeted at Z users and the Z3 was for Z.
If you do not like Sony, instead of waiting the board space of your rants, go get the Galaxy smartphone. I'm sure the fingerprint sensor is revolutionary and excites you!

And all those brand new 2.2 roms without camera... fully working 1080p fotos xD
But i agree with the 6Month cycle problem.
If i ask around a lot of people have a Iphone6 or a Galaxy S5 because it is something. Everyone knows its good... its a status symbol.
If you have a 6 Months cycle your phone is old! Even if you just bought it. Even if the technical details arent much different.
Btw, hasnt sony mobile written red numbers for a few years now?

They actually posted a small profit last year but that was because of the original Z's sales riding high on the waterproof wave! Remember the 5 million units sold in 60 days.
Unfortunately it was a momentum they squandered soon after with the z1. The z2 had a chance of matching and even beating that but delays scuppered its progress.
I'm hopefully they'll have something worthwhile with the z4. Let's just hope they release it early like they did with the Z and not cripple it with rumours following shortly after of another flagship in September.
Sony's running out of time to keep making idiotic mistakes. It's a philosophical thing. There are just some people there at Sony convinced that they can break through doing what they're doing now. I'm sure there'll also be some voices calling for a change in direction. Let's hope those voices get heard. No company can sustain losses indefinitely.
I'm already at the end of my tether and unless I see official word from Sony confirming that the 6 month cycle is no more, I'll be going with the s6 next year. No htc for me, they're just another idiotic company that think metal is the answer to all the world's ills lol.
Having said that, the new oppo with its very slim profile looks delicious but I think I'll pass on that.

Don't care who you trust. The original Z was the last successful flashship from Sony. They're just trying to blame their failings on the mid range segment to avoid damaging the rep of their flashships.

If Sony pulls this through, it would be really a shame.
But the marketing for Xperia devices was a disaster, or should I say really non-existant, at least in Europe. So many people are not aware of the Z3 series. For most of the people it's either Apple, Samsung or (maybe) HTC. When people think about Sony phones, they still think about Sony-Ericsson phones of the 2000's...
The Z3 and Z3c got excellent reviews on nearly every tech website but it's nothing without marketing, unfortunately.
I think the Z3c has enough performance to last until 2017. I hope until then that other manufacturers realize that not everyone wants half a tablet in their pockets.
How would the support for those who have or think about for a Xperia (I'm wanting a Z3c)?
if this is true, i lose faith in humanity.

If I were to guess (and thats really all it is) lolipop will probably be the last major android update for the Z3 by Sony along with maybe a few bug fixes here and there.
Hardware support will probably remain the same for the next couple years at least.
I'm happy with Z3c size and battery life. Lollipop is on the way and we'll probably get 5.1, so this phone will be usable for another couple years. Might even pickup a spare for the future.
Sony mobile could turn a profit if they did their marketing homework, in the US they are hardly known, but it seems they prefer to lay down and die.
A friend asked me the other day what kind of phone I had. I told him a Sony Z3 Compact. His reply... "I didn't know Sony made phones."
Marketing FAIL...
Oh i see bad times coming. Chinese phones everywhere. *shivering*
Sony is the only company right now, which produces phones who actually attract me, except HTC maybe.
Would be really sad when they close their mobile section.
On the other side here in Germany Sony phones are quite widespread and have a high reputation and i don't know any person who doesn't know that Sony produces smartphones.
Sony has indeed failed miserably with its marketing in the US. It's almost weird to see how little the Xperia Z3 phones have been promoted after getting a ton of amazing reviews in the press last fall. Reviews like that, coupled with phenomenal battery life and waterproofing (two huge advantages over competing phones) should have been a license to print money with the Z3 models, but I've barely seen an Xperia ad anywhere and clearly there were minimal contracts with carriers. A first-year marketing student could have done a better job of promoting them than Sony.
But that seems to be Sony's overall problem. Great products, appalling marketing. When they do have a bestseller it's almost by accident. Sort of the opposite of Microsoft, which pours money into marketing crummy products (and poured money into buying Nokia only to do pretty much nothing so far).
Sad that the Xperia line might come to an end. I hope Sony can find a partner to continue... maybe just a marketing partner would help. Having lived with the Z3c for 2-3 months now I cannot imagine going back to a phone with less than 3-days battery life (for my usage) or one that's any bigger than this (perfect for one-handed operation). Those two attributes alone were the reason I gave up on Nexus/Motorola phones. Yes, the Z3c has it's flaws, as does every phone, but in this case the flaws are easily outweighed by the advantages.

A first-year marketing student could have done a better job of promoting them than Sony.

reminds me of Sony's handling of MiniDisc in North America. so many dumb choices and missteps along the way, like failing to capitalize on MD Data and Hi-MD, or remedying the clunkiness of proprietary NetMD before getting swept under the wave of MP3; and keeping the technology prohibitively expensive for the average consumer. and let's take a moment and remember these other Sony fails:
Betamax
DAT
MemoryStick
UMD
Satio (a touchscreen Symbian phone with a 12MP camera -- high-spec for 2009 -- with Xenon flash. phone never saw the light of day in North America, even when Symbian was the most popular mobile OS in the world, though don't get me started on Symbian's fail.)
lest we forget, at one point, pre-Xperia Sony (in partnership with Ericsson) had a super-popular Walkman phone (w810, if i'm remembering correctly), which came out about two years or so before the iPhone was released in 2007. Sony failed to innovate or anticipate the future, and were still releasing pointless multiple versions of dumb phones for a few years after.
oh, and one more: Sony was the first to come out with a music ID service on their devices -- "TrackID" via Gracenote, which is included on our phones still -- but Sony let Shazam drink all the milkshake. still remember former co-workers talking about how revolutionary the Shazam app was, years after the service was already stock on Sony phones.
so yes, there's a history of Sony failures. but i hope the Z3(c) isn't added to the list. i really dig this phone! for the record, i was also really into MD. had a Sony deck, still have two players and a couple dozen MDs (which haven't been used in a long time).
Yikes. And I just purchased a 2 year extended warranty coverage for the Z3. So if my phone dies in the next 3 year, Sony will not be able to replace it?

Oh i see bad times coming. Chinese phones everywhere. *shivering*
Sony is the only company right now, which produces phones who actually attract me, except HTC maybe.
Would be really sad when they close their mobile section.
On the other side here in Germany Sony phones are quite widespread and have a high reputation and i don't know any person who doesn't know that Sony produces smartphones.
