[Q] I'm stuck in CWM recovery mode - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Yesterday an update came up on my screen, I clicked "Install Now"
The phone restarted into CWM.
I am rooted ofcourse, and I'm really scared for my phone,
Is there anything to be done?

Which phone do you have?
Your phone is rooted, do you have a stock or custom ROM?
You should provide a little more information so people can help you.

You should try to reverse back to stock.

I've found that on the forums for LG G2's.

The only thing you probably have to worry about is the data on your device since it is possible you have to wipe it. No worries on bricked device.

No. But it looks like you flashed a borked file. Maybe the CM you installed has a wrong MD5, or you might have flashed a CM that's for a different G2. Either way, you can either push a new ROM zip into your phone to flash, or KDZ back to stock like the guy above me said. Good luck!
And don't worry, your phone is completely fine. But this should be a lesson to always perform a backup before ANY ROM flashing.

What I'd like to know is how did you get CWM in the first place? I've tried for a couple of hours with ROM Manager and the D802 is not supported even though it claims it is. All I get is the red triangle on top of the green android bot and what looks like 2.x CWM. Not sure since I'm new. But it only has about 5 options. No MOUNT, NO ADVANCED, Looks unsuitable for flashing a ROM. I saw this version the very first time I flashed a phone and I soft bricked the phone. It was a Nexus 4. I recovered but I'm not taking any chances and messing with that again. The only way I recovered was using Wugfresh. I need something like Wugfresh for my D802 where I can take those risk. I'm angry because I can't flash anything now. I've got 327 apps to get installed. No one wants to do that manually. It is really inconceivable that this phone which is still arguably the best in the world after 6 months is not supported the way it should be with recovery. Any help in getting CWM working would be greatly appreciated.

That won't work because you can't even get to the menus to install the zip. That the whole problem. You can't really do anything because it basically hangs up with the red triangle. With the number of people having this problem and how great a phone this is you'd figure this problem would not even exist. Here's a screen shot of the problem everybody is having.

since 2 days trying to get out of it but i cant lol

same thing happened to me but i managed to install twrp now my problem is im stocked at lg logo. I have no back up nor any rom downloaded. i have kdz file saved on my g2 but i cant copy it to the computer since it cant be detected or if it has a way please please let me know. I'm new so don't know much. My understanding is you can't flash anything without being in recovery, right? Look at busted25's post. I'm not risking anything that is not concrete. Much as I like to tinker around I accomplish nothing if I end up with a brick. On my Nexus I could risk everything and because I had Wugfresh. No such thing. I'm going to look at he LG software suite and see if can backup the phone enough to restore it should i soft brick or something

What?! Are you sure about that? If true that is really foul. What, do they think we are Apple fans or something? If we didn't want recovery we would have bought Apple. I hope that is not true. Why would they do such think knowing you can't flash if you they do that. I'm addicted to custom roms...LOL! I need my fix now!!

Well the exploit we were using to install recovery/Loki was patched in kk so currently if you want recovery it's the same procedure for all devices downgrade to 4.2(first firmware available) root install recovery and depending on your device I can link you a modified kk that uses the aboot from 4.2 plus modified kk kernel to boot to kk while retaining root/recovery

I don't know if I have the skills to pull that off. I could wind up like busted25 and all the others who bricked. I think my best option might be to sell it very cheap quickly and order a new one and never upgrade. I'll take the hit. Phone is less than a week old. One thing I'm not understanding though is I'm seeing only kitkat custom roms for this phone out there. That's why I thought it was ok to upgrade. I didn't see any 4.2.2. Everybody who flashed the custom roms must have been fairly or very skilled. One thing that made me upset is ROM Manager advertised recovery for this phone that was bogus. I even paid for the touch version and got nothing and no email reply

You can root. But do not delete the bloat. Only freeze with Titanium Backup

Depends on which apps your freezing/considering bloat. Its probably safer to unfreeze first before you reset in the event you accidentally freeze something that is required for the phone to function properly. Heres a list, BUT I didnt see which firmware they were using.

If you root on MF3 then your stock recovery will be corrupted. Factory reset through the phone will not work and make your phone in bootloop. There is no ODIN/factory reset at this time. So please be careful
Your best bet if you want to root is to carefully know what you're doing.
As for your other question if it's possible. Yes, it is possible to root but read above as I have warned you. Since you can root on MF3, you will also be able to install titanium backup to freeze the bloats. Do not remove/uninstall ANY of the bloats in case something goes wrong.
If you choose to unroot later: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45340743#post45340743
Good luck
Phewww..i followed the link and got the phone unrooted. So i guess i can factory restore now ? correct ? haha thanks
I unrooted my S4 before sending it back for a warranty exchange. I factory reset it and it worked fine.

I have been using CM as my OS since around the first stable release. I am now on 10.2 JB 4.2.2 Yet when I go in and look at my About Phone it says MF3. I have installed root for about a week and all was well and working with CWM (corrected) recovery. I even upgrade to a later version (corrected). Then some app (I can't remember which unfortunately) put on a different recovery with tiny letters - the purpose of which so it can script a full install so I didn't have to do it every step myself. When it installed it, I encountered the horrific blue letters of "Booting Recovery..." and it will not get past that.
I can't load any other recovery no matter what method tried, and I have tried many, and many different recoveries. I think I found out after installing the apk from the verizon section SAFESTRAP program some things. First there appears to no way to delete the cache partition. Both the cache and the recovery partitions can be empty. The recovery partition is not always empty but usually that is the case.
I have the sinking feeling I am the victim of what you said at first "If you root on MF3 then your stock recovery will be corrupted." But I dont see how this is possible considering I had CM 10.2 4.2.2 (corrected) when root was installed. But my symptoms fit what you have said above. Can you explain a lot more about what this is about and and details inside the phone as to what is known so far? I have a MS in CS so I have a good background, even though I am very limited on what I can do on computers today. Details!
I am willing to do most anything to get back to a starting point.

[Q] LG G2 Rom Questions

I am going to be getting a LG G2 Verizon - VS980 and I am fimliar with rooting but not with custom roms. I have a Nexus 10 so I never felt the need to fiddle with ROMs. I wanna install CyanogenMod Release candidate. I heard freegee and root are needed to install something that is needed for custom roms but I just don't quite have a full grasp on it. I am new at ROMs but not at rooting. Could someone point me in the right direction? Also I have a few questions.
Is the VS980 correct LG G2 for Verizon to get downloads from the CyanogenMod site?
Do you recommend any other roms besides CM? I like the Nexus line because it is simply stock android but I do like the feature over overclocking that CM offers I think with its 2Ghz it would be uneeded.
If your already on Verizon this about the best android device you can get right now I personally prefer the nexus 5 but I'm on Verizon so no nexus devices for us except the galaxy nexus which i maymake my my backup device oh and if you plan on getting the lg g2 you might wanna get one soon before you get an lg g2 with firmware that patches Loki

You don't need root to flash custom roms you just need to unlock your bootloader
you can find that guide here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2224020
Personally I'd just root it since your new rom will be rooted anyway, it just makes life easier, and there are easier methods of unlocking the bootloader using root apps.
To answer your other questions I don't believe the cyanogenmod installer works on your device but it wouldn't hurt to give a shot. If your looking for a stock android feel cyanogen's the way to go I'd highly recommend it over any stock rom but try things for yourself and see what you like best.

It shouldn't be to late were not expecting an ota till sometime in march you might be cutting it close depends when but as soon as you root install custom recovery or disable ota because lg will push updates to your device even if you say no and when your rooted it creates a mighty soft brick

You'll be good to go, probably not going to see an ota until the kk release which could be months away (Yay Verizon ). I just got mine today (Verizon) rooted using this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48709232&postcount=869
And recovery using freegee. Effortless, and easy. Make sure you backup your efs in the freegee app and there is a better efs backup in the general section that you should do to.
And to reference another poster here, our bootloader is 100% locked. Root is required in order to apply the loki patch to flash a custom recovery. Loki allows a custom recovery to operate on the stock locked bootloader... You really won't know the difference from it being locked or unlocked.
-VZW LG G2 VS980
I just looked closer this unlock method is for the optimus 4g different hardware everything is different lg went the more locked down root with the g2

Do you mind going into a little more detail about the Loki patch? My buddy is pretty into this stuff (I'm not, but I have a Nexus 7 and prefer the stock version instead of LGs), and said he'd be able to help me...well, he has a GS4, and it took him a while to figure out something was wrong with the boot loader (communicating long distance)...now were kinda stuck, and don't know what to do. I'm in almost the exact same situation as OP...VZW G2 that I'd like to put CM on.
Also...I think I may have messed up big time and rooted my phone before making any recovery files...the poster above talking about the upcoming OTA bricking phones....am I just sitting on a ticking time bomb?
Garsh that xda forums noob video is making me feel awfully stupid right now

Also...I think I may have messed up big time and rooted my phone before making any recovery files...the poster above talking about the upcoming OTA bricking phones....am I just sitting on a ticking time bomb?
Garsh that xda forums noob video is making me feel awfully stupid right now

I do have a recovery...have tried with Clockwork Mod and TWRP, but basically what happens is if I try to do a manual boot in to recovery mode using the keys on the back, it just actually goes through with the factory reset of the phone. If I try to do it through an app like CWM or TWRP, I get the LG splash screen, and then the android logo with its chest open and the red exclamation point over it. If I let it sit and do nothing on that graphic, eventually the phone just resets. There is nothing else on that screen but that graphic.

Even using Flashify, which claims to bypass this whole Lokis patch (still dont really understand what it is) didnt work...

Try to do through an app? You mean rom manager or twrp manager? If so it sounds like you still have the stock recovery, which would render those apps useless. Use the freegee app instead of flashify, it automatically downloads the correct recovery/loki patch and applies it.
Loki is simply a patch that tells the bootloader upon initial boot that it's OK to continue...Your bootloader is still locked, but the phone doesn't recognize that. If loki wasn't there, you'd just brick just like all the poor Verizon samsung users since the last update...

THANK YOU!!!
I know it may be common knowledge to some, but to a complete newbie, this was the one bit of information I was missing that made a very frustrating process very simple. Many thanks to you my friend, if I could hit more than just a button to express it I would :highfive:

Noob guide.

Just wondering if there is anything special to know about rooting etc on the G2. Or is it as simple as others? I have had MANY android phones from Xperias to Galaxy's, htcs and most recently the Nexus 4.
Is there a noob guide on here I can't find much but admittedly I'm on Tapatalk at the minute.
How do I unlock boot loader or even can I?
Can I just fastboot flash a custom recovery?
What is this root checking that voids warranty is it like Samsung yellow triangle?
Sorry if any of this is stupid but I've never had an LG.

first things first what model of g2 do you have/ are planning on getting(to recommend proper rooting method), anyways I recommend ioroot for rooting your device(easiest way and lots of support), second to unlock bootloader and flash roms/kernels without issues you need to loki your device or get a twrp/cwm with loki built in to it. As for flashing recovery the easiest is to use freegee from the play store and choose which recovery you would like to use, once rooted the root check is in download mode it will say if it's rooted or not but using lg flash tool and going to stock removes this and there aren't any stupid questions if I do say so myself. Hope this helps any thing else let us know

That does help thanks I've learnt to ignore the unhelpful and ignorant.
It is just the international version it should arrive tomorrow. So from what I understand I can follow any root and boot loader unlock guide that matches my version. And can fully return to stock with no traces or issues?

yea pretty much as long as you don't flash the wrong file everything will be smooth anyways this is the international thread(http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g2/development-d802) so you can sart planning what you want to do once it arrives and trust you gonna love it
also:
root- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48709232&postcount=869 (latest ioroot and drivers)
rooting instructions- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448887
recovery twrp- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2449670 (I prefer twrp)
recovery cwm- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2468858 (just in case your not a fan of twrp)
(both recoveries include loki already)
As a last note if by any chance you want to try stock kitkat (you can try official without root by flashing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2664933 through lg flash tool) or if you root first you can try(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2665985) although you will lose custom recovery and need to use the flash tool to jump down to stock jb and start again have fun :fingers-crossed:
Similar Situation but with Sprint
Hello, I'm kinda in the same situation. except the G2 is with Sprint.
First, i'd just like to say that i can root, twrp, custom with quite a few HTC and Samsung phones but have yet to tackle an LG. It's actually my girlfriends. I told her not to accept any updates when she recieved the phone today from the local Sprint Store. So as it stands she's completely stock to my knowledge. I've included pictures.
Since she's on Sprint and NOT International, i can only assume the guides that you posted to help our other friend will not help me(or at least to an extent). I'm definitely not opposed to reading and learning, just really unsure where to start as the G2 is only split on the carrier level at Development. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

the rooting works with the g2 as long as it's stock 4.2.2 and the recovery guide for twrp plus 2.6.3.3 from here(http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/g2spr) should work but I did see somewhere that an update to the sprint model added some spark thing(I don't know what it is exactly) that does not play too well with custom kernels
on another note the reason for it splitting on a carrier level is so that no one flashes something that isn't for them which would cause lots of unwanted problems but of course if you want a rom for your model you head over to the sprint thread look for the one you want and flash away, and always remember to have a backup it can save your phones life someday
---------- Post added at 11:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:04 PM ----------
also forgot to mention there are other methods of flashing recoveries from play store like freegee, goo manager, rom manager, etc but I did not include because I am not sure wether they include loki or not which is important if you wanna flash certain roms and mainly different kernels
Wow that's some great help and info there mate thanks for all the help! Seems like everything I need all in one place. Its out for delivery today so will hopefully be playing with it by this evening.
From what I can tell from a little reading there isn't a UK KitKat officially yet at the minute? Is there any I can manually flash with minimal to zero bloat? Just standard LG software?

Well like I mentioned before if you root first you can flash this(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2665985) if done correctly you keep root but will lose recovery because as of yet there isn't one and since its international bloat is minimal unlike when it's from an American carrier
Once you root, using freegee to install recovery is trivial and yes it includes Loki.
I used ioroot to root my G2 and I have no complaints, everything went through smoothly

Thanks a bunch! It seems as though this is going to be unexpectedly simple!
I highly doubt I'm going to be flashing anything other than a modified stock Rom for her. Stability, battery life, with no bugs is all I'm looking for as it's not my phone. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
Also, I get why they're split at the development level, it's just that running through the QA and General sections is a little tougher. I do so appreciate all the help and advice!

Replacing factory firmware!!!
Hello,
i Am newbie here, recently i brought a LG G2 D802 supposedly from a EU store and i am in Finland, but to my surprise the software firmware is Asia made, Hong Kong to be particular. it goes like this, D80210b-HKG-XX build JDQ39B kernel 3.4.0. With this original Stock software, the 4G option is not shown( i know it can be done by hidden menu but i want to get a permanent fix); the MMS setting althought i did it manually by inserting the values provided by the Network service provider.Still i am unable to get that fix.
I am in turn to contacting my seller for the correct working OPEN stock rom installed G2 but if the case does not go like that then i wish to root it to the OPEN international ROM . From what i have read, if you update then it goes back to the HKG rom, if there any way i can remove the factory rom with the OPEN Rom and receive the update OTA and it will not revert back. I have been doing my research on this but i am not able to get the answers... Hope some one will shine some light on this.
Thanks in Advance !!!

[Q] KitKat Rom on T Mobile Lg G2

I've tried this two times and both I had the same result. I downgraded back to 4.2.2 with the D80110g_00.kdz for the tmobile g2. Then I rerooted it and added philz touch recovery. I flashed with the kitkat baseband in the cloudystock 1.1 fourm, then the rom with the patched 801 kernel after. Everything boot's up ok, and the phone works. But when I turn off the screen and back on its all grayed out with yellow lines. I have the reboot the phone for the screen to show up again. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?
Do the same process except do not use 80110g. Find the 80110c kdz.
Sent from my LG-D801 using xda app-developers app
Thank you, that fixed the problem. Another question I have is that when I flash the baseband, do I have to keep reflashing it when I move to another kitkat rom?

Doesn't seem like you are flashing in wrong order. If you boot up and everything runs...it's probably just due to the fact this isn't an official release and there may be bugs

same issue here. Cannot run any stock KK roms at all. I've flashed so many times and have had to return to stock. I wish this problem could be identified.
Did anyone out there figure this out?
I'm having the same problem on my device, tried several stock ROMs but nothing works even when using different basebands.
I have this problem as well and no, you're not doing anything wrong. Devs have absolutely no idea why this is happening. It seems that this is only happening with users that bought the phone and have the G build pre-installed. People that bought the phone earlier with the C build don't have this problem.
I gave up and just flashed the official KK TMO ROM with root installed. I lost my recovery but hopefully devs can get recovery on stock KK. If anything, I can always KDZ back to 4.2.2 and re-install the recovery if I want to go back to AOSP ROM's.
FWIW, I bought the G2 a week ago. When did you get yours?
I think you hit the nail on the head with G build comment. I got my phone about a month ago from TMO and it came pre-installed. I wonder if something in the actual hardware is ever so slightly different with the latest G2s...
I flashed with the C build and it didn't fix it also, guess I'll stay on 4.2.2 till there is a official kitkat root.
Anyone around in this thread with the line problem willing to test a kernel?

How do you find if you have G or C build? I thought all tmobile g2's are c build. I am getting mine tomorrow, hope it is shipped with JB rom - if so, i think it will be better to stay. After reading a bit, i heard many say tot method is working fine as explained here.
Which rom (xd thread?) are you using? Does wifi calling work?

If you go to software you can see the build, it either ends with C or D. Most likely D since you'll just be getting it. And it will be JB not KK. There's a new AutoRec file that gives KK users recovery, but since you'll be getting the D version, you'll most likely have the white line glitch issue. There's a way around it, just PM me for further questions and I'll help ya out.

It does seem confusing, but I promise you that it's a bit more painless than you think. I'm assuming your phone did indeed ship with TMO KitKat? Then in that case, once you're done rooting, all you have to do is install the AutoRec apk and that's it! Let me know if you need a link for AutoRec.

Another upgrade

Guys, my phone just told me there's another upgrade for the lg g2 D803 variant....Anybody seen this yet?
I'm wondering what the upgrade is, seeing it's 1.5 gb.
It's gonna take me to D803B20G. Not sure if the current rooting and autorec recovery method will work on this new firmware, sceptical about installing it......

1. wrong place to post this.
2. general rule of thumb - if you like having root and recovery, NEVER take an OTA from the manufacturer EVER, until it's confirmed that it doens't block root / recovery /bootloader exploits (like the 4.4 ot'as blocked loki)

Q&A if you're asking a question about it, General if you wanted to let people know about it..
yes probably in q&a or general maybe, like stated above please dont install on your phone if youre rooted with a non stock recovery otherwise you will mess up your phone big time! really not sure if its possible but if you can, switch off firmware updates as they are not compatible with the custom recoveries and whichever rom you are using will update soon enough anyway if your on stock rom the same applies if you have a custom recovery

I have stock Rom rooted and twrp recovery that's all.
Avoid the update.
However it has the knock knock code addon. Or, as far as I've heard, that's the only new update LG had planned for the LG G2.
Do not install it. If you REALLY want to try it, make a backup, store it on your PC, OTA. If you lose root, you can revert to stock, get a recovery, put your backup back on your phone and restore.....but that's honestly a lot of work just to possibly get the knock knock code. (I know turning on is knock on, but for the "code" you knock more than once minimum, so I call it knock knock).
You can also force supersu to keep root, but last time I tried that for an OTA I got stuck in a bootloop.
TL;DR: Might be knock on/knock knock code. Not sure what else. You can backup and try to OTA, but no one can be certain what will happen. Expect to lose root. You can force SuperSu to keep root, but you may bootloop.
I'd just wait for more info.

twrp recovery is a custom recovery, so never update.
I'm pretty sure there is an app in /system that you can freeze to stop push updates. Sadly, that is the only info I have. It may have been carrier specific and I haven't been on stock since the first week I had the phone. Haha.
Guys I already know all what you just said......I've done this loads of times. Just wondering if I can uninstall custom recovery without re-installing stock firmware?
I know I can take my chance and try the OTA but not without recovery gone first.
It's a lot of work to just flash stock firmware, install update and if there's no big change, flash stock again.....
Thats why i was wondering if the only option is flash stock to get rid of recovery

Twrp is not a Rom it's a recovery. Hence the "recovery"

Lol, yeah I didn't want to say anything. He should read up before doing anything with his phone.

I think its possible, (but it should be really hard to do so) but the easiest way is to flash a .kdz file And you should not take the chance to update when you have recovery, it just isn't worth it. Anyways I would just have sticked with a custom rom which gets updated regulary..or flashed a kdz and get back to stock.
Btw can the good judger @Judge Joseph Dredd move the thread to q and a section? I think that it is even more help to get there
OP Moved out of the Development Threads, since this does not belong there....Please read the Forum Rules on posting.
