fingerprint scanner - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone else agree the fingerprint scanner is a huge disappointment? Can't even be used with one hand!

+1. Tried it yesterday and it was garbage. It can't even compare to the iPhones.

I am sure if it was used in a way a similar way that the iPhone's fingerprint sensor is used, they'd have another patent on their hands.

Definitely a shame

Yep... Patents were a huge benefit for Apple being first.

The only disappointment is that other manufacturers still think they need to copy Apple. I blame those darn American consumers. I wouldn't have been in the slightest bit disappointed if the S5 didn't have a fingerprint scanner.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk

The problem is that Apple bought AuthenTec, the company which makes the type of fingerprint scanners which the iPhone uses.
And you know Apple is ready to sue if someone else brings a similar fingerprint scanner!

Yeah same. Just a costly gimmick. And Samsung, if you're gonna implement a feature that heavily advertised, At least make it work -_-

Fingerprint readers on any phone are garbage, including the one on the iPhone. I've used the iPhone one many times and had it fail miserably many times over. Same thing with a buddies iPhone. That technology still has a long time to go before it's perfected.
Anyways, I've seen enough videos for the S5 to prove to me that the fingerprint reader works just fine, so I'm content with that.

It was iffy on 7.0, but on iOS 7.1 it hasn't failed on me once. I always keep my hands clean, so that could make a difference. You've got to set it up properly and once you do that it's good. I bet your friends either hadn't set it up properly or weren't on 7.1.

I'm not questioning the accuracy. It is clear though that the only functional use for it is ad hoc events such as PayPal. it is useless to unlock your phone unless you want to use two hands

I was hoping to get a chance to try it aswell but it was blocked on every demo S5 I encountered. Where did you get a chance to try it?

I don't see why is it so hard to make a biometric scanner on a phone. My laptop from 2010 has one on it that works like a charm every time.
I'm hoping the problem with the one on the S5 is that you just need to get used to using it. If not -- no problem, I just won't use it.

You make it sound like it doesn't work lol. Friends iphone scanner doesn't always work first try either. So it's not as if the apple one is flawless. Either way, as a whole the GS5 definitely offers a lot of what consumers want and with all these great mini reviews coming in, I personally can't wait for what they got in store for the next note.

I wonder how the fingerprint scanner works when there's a screen protector on top.

Well the only fingerprint tat worked flawlessly was on motorola atrix I used tat phone for a year and ter wasnt a single complaint from the fingerprint scanner...u cud easily use it with 1 hand without any problems watsoever even if ur hands r wet or dirty it recognised it

Anyone not happy with text render time after zooming?

In my opinion, there is too much of a delay rendering the text (focusing/unblurring it) after a zoom or scroll is made.
I say this comparing to a Tegra 2 phone, so there is no way this is slower. Even at 1.6ghz it is still awkwardly slow.
Considering this tablet is pretty much made for reading text/ web browsing that seems like a poor effort.

Cool, I see where you're coming from, but on the other hand I paid money for a device I expect to function in a proper manner.
I'm not being unreasonable, I have a Tegra 2 phone, as I said. There is no way that a Tegra 3 tablet should be any slower (significantly).
I also have no idea if other people are experiencing it or not, or maybe there's a fix I don't know about? Your trolling isn't helping anyone.
If I was given the tablet for free, of course I wouldn't be complaining, as it stands now though, a product I paid money for is not working as I would expect it to.

Moonreader renders fast for PDF files etc, and I see no problems using dolphin browser. Try switching apps or power settings.
A lot of apps need to be updated to work well with the new OS release as well don't forget, or this tablet specifically.
It is probably the app your using and whether the text is local or online like a website.

Yeah I feel you on that, seems to render it a little slow. On my iPhone it seems as if everything renders at once and when I zoom in its already there, wonder if the nexus does/tries to do something similar. Books read fine, its the chrome zoom that messes up on me too.

My want is fading

Is it true that i went be able to download files to my phone from the browser?
And apps will be limited in options in dramatic ways? Any truth to these?
Well i be able to install programs not in the market? Like different camerasoftware or custom made clock app? I can install modifications through a custom recovery and feel i will miss this badly. But i have wanted a Windows phone for a while
I love and use all my email options including labels galore. My want for the 8x had went from around 90% to about 5% just reading forums the past few days.

As a huge Windows Phone fan, I can't understand why ANYONE would want the 8x over the Lumia 920. But I digress...
To install apps not in the market, you have to register your device as a dev device (all 3 of my Windows Phone devices are registered and I'm able to install non-market apps).
I have several Android devices and personally, I believe Windows Phone buries it. If you were closer, I'd loan you one of mine to use for a while to see if you like it. I have converted a few to Windows Phone from iPhone 4's as well as Android devices. Only ONE person so far has switched back to the iPhone and it had a lot to do with the fact that she worked with other women who had iPhones and she felt like an outcast. Seriously.
-Mc
For his perspective how does WP8 "buries it" when it does none of what he wants?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The 920 isn't an option. Verizon. I'm going to play with one in store for a while and see how it plays out. I have an sgs3 as i type and the phone i go to will HAVE to feel like an upgrade in every way. No step backward

Well, his biggest concern is that he can sideload apps. Since WP8 CAN, the correct sentence should have been that it does SOME of what he wants.
The Gmail tags are nice but between subfolders and a web client, those needs are basically met as well.

Personally, I'd have to give serious consideration to the Nokia Lumia 822 as well.
Nokia's Windows Phone support and Nokia apps are great.
Given that those are your only options though, the 8X is a great phone. The 16GB and lack of MicroSD card was the only disappointment for me with it.
I have an OLD HTC Surround (the first Windows Phone device AT&T carried) and I still prefer it to anything Android or iPhone related. Windows Phone is a VERY fast and fluid OS. The tight integration between services is pretty awesome and nobody can touch their Email/Calendar/Office apps.
I hope you can get enough time in the store to give it a thorough going through. I'd hate for you to buy it because I said it was awesome and after 3 weeks you hate it. While many people I've "helped" convert to Windows Phone are now true converts, one of their wifes is still missing her iPhone. So not everybody that jumped in feet first was happy about it.
Still ignoring his very first question?
Yes it does SOME if you're only talking about sideloading apps by paying to register a device at the moment.

Buddy of mine just ordered an 8x so I'll get some hands on in a week or so. He is coming from htc rezound (android) so I'll get his impressions plus maybe enough of my own to make a decision. If nothing else I'll have the option to switch back and forth(micro Sims) until i decide permanently. Thanks again everyone. I know people get heated about these things but was not my intention. I've used Palm os. Ios..android and even Windows back in the day.(touch pro and tp2 and omnia 2) win 8 seems fresh but android has been very satisfactory for me since original droid 1. yes and no, depends on the app, if it is coded to allow backgrounding, etc. there are good reads on this.
Well i be able to install programs not in the market?
yes, pay to dev unlock, then sideload. there aren't many though

if you can find one, yes
I can install modifications through a custom recovery and feel i will miss this badly.
absolutely no. no full phone backups to sdcard. no restoring of the phone to yesterdays recovery from sdcard. a computer must be present to restore from any and all backups.

sorry, I can't do nifty things like italics and bold to clean up my responses in your quote from tapatalk (on my android device, while eating a plum, from california, on a Sunday)

[Q] Anyone besides me, just give it back??

After the aggravation of no flash support, multiple screen freezes, and the sometime slow buggy screen response. The screen is great for viewing though! I decided to just send it back. To be completely truthful I would not have bought it, when not supporting flash!! Reminds too much of Apple!! I hate when companies force me into, or in this case out of something I want just because they feel like it!! If they think it's a security risk, make it a user option! When you buy a router, do they force you to use encryption? No!! It's my tablet & I should be able to watch flash videos if I want!!
And before anyone starts saying, you can get around it by using firefox or dolphin browsers, you can't! At least not completely, they are buggy!
Just want to see if any others, traded it in so to speak!!

Same boat as you, i had it for a while then gave it back. I ended up sticking with my infinity.
Mmm... Flash is no longer supported mate all across the tablet/mobile world. Besides if your not willing to side load the flash apk then I suggest you go buy a laptop. Flash is buggy anyways but for me flash is nice on my N10. I Can watch my Hulu through the browser. If you want flash you got to do a little work to get it working. Just like any android tablet nowadays. The issues you stated can you be a bit more specific? I haven't had any problems on performance on this thing. Browsing is very quick. Just opening apps and loading my gmail is very fast compared to the Infinity I had. Even using ttorrent, I can actually download a 3gig HD movie without sacrificing performance. No laggyness at all compared to other previous tablets I've owned.

Flash works fine on the Nexus 10 and it is Adobe who dropped Flash, not so much Google. Adobe said they were dropping all mobile flash support.
Guess I was one of the lucky ones because my Nexus 10 is perfect. Better than the Xoom I had, the Transformer tf101 I bought my wife and the Galaxy Tab 10.1's I got my parents.

I really don't understand how Flash Player is so important enough to justify a device purchase decision, especially since it's becoming obsolete... Might just be my browsing habits, but there are 2 sites total that I use that would be "somewhat" pointless without flash player. Just 2. And those 2 sites I could care less about on a tablet (one of the sites is YouTube; which has a standalone app on Android lol)
So in a few months when either all Android tablets are updated and no longer support flash, or your tablet that does, is completely outdated, you are just going to NOT own a tablet ..
At least that is what I get from your "reasons".
Honestly you don't have to justify returning the tablet, if you can't take change I suggest you move to the north pole or something where pretty much nothing changes.
These posts about "Why I don't like the N10" or "Why I am too lazy to sideload flash" or " X tablet is Better than Y tablet" are REALLY REALLY getting old ..
I am in these forums because I own said device, not because I want to talk about how I returned it, or how much I hate it ..
Should be a rule if you don't own the device and are not a developer, leave said forum.
@OP
It looks as though you don't have any clue what you are talking about. The nexus 10 definitely supports flash. You don't need anything but the flash.apk to use it on any browser. It is the users choice to use it or not. And please do a little research next time before you try and slander or put down a company (Google) for something that they have nothing to do with. It's Adobe that doesn't support flash on the mobile platform. Not Google. All you would've needed to do is take 11 seconds to sideload one app and you have flash. Either way. If you don't have this tablet, what does your opinion of it matter here in the Nexus 10 forums? It doesn't. Move along to the next device, complain about that one, and waste more space in another forum with your opinions.

I'm using Ocean browser and this apk worked fine for me.
Just use puffin browser whenever you need flash. It loads the content on remote servers then sends it back to you. It can even emulate a touch pad or a game controller for flash gaming.
It works on iOS too if you care about that.

I had an Infinity for two months before I got the N10. Each person's experience is different but my Infinity experience was laggy and frustrating. I found myself rebooting frequently trying to make it speedy. I disabled most of the Asus stuff, it just didn't "feel" like a great experience. I will say Asus is on top of updates and the bloatware is minimal by comparison to other non-Nexus tablets, of course.
The N10, for me, is just smooth. Living with the N10 is just better for me.
No one had an answer last time I asked, does anyone know now if there is a fix for flash/browser yet, so when I hit full screen it doesn't crash the browser? I tried all of them, they all do it

Developer huh?? Like I said flash is buggy on the nexus 10! I did side load the apk flash pack & it only works partially!! Go to any site that uses flowplayer to show flash, hit the full screen button & the 10's screen goes black & does a partial lock up!! The only way you can move off that screen now is hit the home button!! And its not the flowplayer program, because it works fine on my PC!! It will do the same thing on your 10 too, most likely!! Take your personal assumption & attack where it belongs, off a cliff!! My point was I don't like Google, Android, Adobe, or developers taking things away just because they feel like it!! Remember the software companies work for the public, not the other way around!!
If I knew flash would not work properly, as i stated before. I would not have bought it to begin with!! I believed the developers that there is a workaround, there's not!! At least not one that works 100%.

Stay calm lol your the one that came here, posted a new topic, and assumed that things are what they are from your brief experience trying to get flash to work. Task650 knows what he is saying and we are all just trying to help you and correct you because what you think is not true. Yes there is a way to get flash working 100%
Here is a link to get flash working 100% you will need to unlock and root your device if you want it to work 100% Yes I'm sure that site you spend time on should work as well. It worked for me and I was able to watch Hulu. I would test it out for you but I just unrooted to exchange my N10.

But I guess you don't need it now since you've returned your N10. Its unfortunate because its a great tablet.

I believe I will be charged the 15% restocking fee, credit not issued yet. Apple customer service is way better in that regard. I think in the future, I will wait to see the device in a retail store first, save time & trouble on both ends!

So then... what mobile platform are you going to buy in a year or two? Plus, it's the mobile Flash player that's causing the problems. That's purely Adobe's fault for dropping it.
I can tell that your "multiple screen freezes, and the sometime slow buggy screen response" are from fullscreening Flowplayer and being unable to get out. You make it sound like a generalization throughout the whole device.
Anyway, were you talking about this?

Yes sideloading will not give you 100% especially if your running stock and not rooted.
Here is a link to get flash working 100% you will need to unlock and root your device if you want it to work 100% Yes I'm sure that site you spend time on should work as well. It worked for me and I was able to watch Hulu. I would test it out for you but I just unrooted to exchange my N10.

Thanks for the helpful response, unlike some other members that tell me I can't believe my own eyes!! Mine is heading back already but this may help others with the same problem!! Personally, I like flash & wish it would stick around. I take offense when others tell me what I can & can't have, especially when I'm paying them & they're not paying me!!

Vea Buddy

Just wondering if anyone else preordered one of these.

Yes it is, I was just wondering if anyone else was one of the original contributors. The first 200 were able to get it for a contribution of $99 and the next 2,000 were able to pick one up for a contribution of$149. I should be getting mine delivered in August as I got a chance to be one of the 2,000 contributors.

Well not sure on the watch, when you go through their slides on the home page they said tree colors instead of three colors. So what does that say about the product?

Its a French company and obviously the sites moderator/creator has a language barrier. They actually have a previous product that has been successful but it was geared towards being used as a workout companion paired with a smartphone.

Just a quick note to all, the Vea team slightly changed their design by using an LG screen which has several people pissed, although I personally still like it.
With that said, if any of you are interested, be on the lookout for some folks selling theirs since they do not want to keep the watch once it has been shipped.

Nice, didn't know they hit ebay already. Got mine in April and I can't complain too much about it, only problem I'm having is that my google account has authentication enabled so the gmail notifications don't work unless I remove the authentication, but otherwise it's pretty nice.
I've been in touch with the founder/owner and asked her if she feels the hardware is capable of carrying the Android 4.4w

Giving up on Google

6 devices and 6 returns
GPS, bad pixels, multitouch... They all came from different factories and they were all crap
I've had enough... Sticking with my OG Nexus and when ipad mini retina comes out, if it has GPS I am switching.
Anyone else with me? What will you be waiting for / going to in the meantime? ¢
I have the GPS issue which is likely software. Other than that my new n7 is perfect. I'll wait for the GPS fix and until then use my One for GPS.

If GPS was a software issue, wouldn't everyone be suffering from it? Using GPS test, I am currently connected to 15/23 satellites, and it's got my current location accurate to 3 meters. I haven't had any GPS issues whatsoever, not that I use my tablet for GPS ever, but I tested it extensively after reading so many problems.
I never do this. IRL I'm a really nice guy, but for frack's sake, can we keep all these "Google/Asus/Android sucks" posts on one thread? That way all the whining can stay in one place. Maybe even make it a sticky (like people actually read those). I know I can avoid reading them, but there is a point when enough is enough. They are cluttering up the freaking forum.
I know you are frustrated and may have a legitimate complaint, but man....
P.S. Feel free to post on the other similar threads, and you may find helpful suggestions on what other users will be switching to. Unless the main reason for this thread was to have your name on the OP. Then I can't help you. That's an "i" generation problem.

When I restart my 7 I get great GPS for a few minutes and then no SATs... Sounds like software to me... Google has acknowledged and I'll wait for a determination.... If it's a hardware fault, I feel for Asus because Google will force their hand.

I don't think the issue is connecting but the connection sporadically dropping when connected for an extended period of time.

If the device performed it's most basic functions adequately, the forum wouldn't be full of complaints.

Liar? do you need to see the receipts? I have nothing to prove to you... I exchanged 6 devices from Staples, and Walmart and all had issues. Liars? I guess the loads of people posting threads here and google product forums, android central, those people are all liars too?

I don't like Apple either... I have been the number one fan of Google and Android... I have converted my family and friends not only to the Android platform, but to the whole Google "OS".
I think my problem is really more than just this Nexus 7 FHD... I have issues with Google as a whole.
first was destroying Google Reader
then destroying gmail with horrible UI
destroying talk app, replacing with dumbed down "hangouts"
destroying google maps, can't find alternate routes, dumbed down features again..
dismantle latitude to force us to use the horrible Google+ facebook knockoff platform when I have NO interest in social media
I really hate the direction the company is going. It seems I have no choice, no alternative though. iOS is just a device, not a platform... there is no compelling argument to invest myself into their whole mantra... Microsoft makes cool stuff but it is far from a platform.
I really just miss the old Google... and hate this new one. Google used to innovate, not copy others and deliberately dismantle things that work beautifully already.
Sorry if I seem like I'm just complaining to complain.... but I really am fed up and not sure how to move forwards in the absence of the old Google.

Yep... I'm with you as well, I went through two of them.
Every ASUS device I have gotten has been complete S&%# (Transformer Prime, TF700, that "budget" windows 8 one).
I am boycotting ASUS and am waiting to see an HTC tab or the iPad Mini like you (I don't count Samsung, I HATE Touchwiz ) So... yeah.
Only GPS problems here..... Otherwise it perfect.....

Well from what I've heard from a friend who works for Apple in the mall, there most likely not be a ipad mini with retina display.

Android is becoming what Windows is now. Completely fragmented and the hardware is obsolete within 6-9 months. Full of exploitable holes. And hardware makers that charge a premium for mediocre devices. Cheap devices that are complete junk.
Unless Google reigns in the manufacturers more fragmentation will keep happening.

I just bought a previously opened Nexus 7 2013 from Staples and the thing is still perfect. I love this thing, it's the best $229 I've ever spent (price matched from Google Play). As to GPS problems, I'm getting a fix in GPS Status and Tools from my basement.

All 8 (yeah, I bought 2 more today and they both were bad as well, looks like 1 was previously returned too) of the devices I bought worked great standing still. It's when you try to navigate anywhere they become bricks.
